Sorption properties and behaviour at laboratory scale of selected pharmaceuticals using batch experiments

Size and polarity fractions of mobile organic matter from manure affect the sorption of sulfadiazine, caffeine and atenolol in soil

Waste-derived organics introduced to soils along with pharmaceutical active compounds (PhAC) are a crude mixture of compounds occurring in various size and polarity fractions. They affect the sorption of PhACs to soil; however, the relevant knowledge is still insufficient. The effects of different size and polarity fractions of manure-derived mobile organic matter (<63 µm) on the sorption of sulfadiazine, caffeine and atenolol to five topsoils were investigated. Mobilization of the PhACs was strongest in the presence of dissolved organic matter (mDOM, <0.45 µm), with a reduction of Kd of sulfadiazine, caffeine and atenolol by mean factors of 0.66, 0.57 and 0.41, respectively. The mobilizing effects of colloidal organic matter (0.45-10 µm) were slightly smaller. Fine particulate organic matter (10-63 µm) reduced the sorption of the PhACs in slightly acidic soils (pH 6.0), but increased it in strongly acidic soil (pH 4.3). Furthermore, hydrophobic (HO-mDOM) and hydrophilic (HI-mDOM) fractions of mDOM reduced the sorption capacity but increased the sorption nonlinearity of PhACs in soils. Effects of HO-mDOM and HI-mDOM were PhAC specific. It is suggested to consider the varying impacts of mobile fractions in animal manure and/or treated wastewater in evaluating the fate and environmental relevance of associated PhACs.

Long-term impact of wastewater effluent discharge on groundwater: Identification of contaminant plume by geochemical, isotopic, and organic tracers' approach

Infiltration of effluents from wastewater treatment plants (WWTP) into groundwater can be a source of Contaminants of Emerging Concern (CECs), such as pharmaceutical compounds, that are not fully removed during the treatment processes. A multi-tracer approach, based on hydrogeochemical, isotopic, and organic tracers, is applied in the Vistrenque Aquifer (Gard, France) to assess the dispersion of such unintentional plumes and its potential implication on groundwater quality for CECs in a small catchment area. In this area, a point source of WWTP effluent causes contaminant infiltration and unintentional transfer to the aquifer. This strong impact of an urban effluent was revealed from the Br/Cl ratio, boron concentrations and δ11B isotopic signature of the groundwater in the direct vicinity of the infiltration point. With increasing distance from that point, dilution with groundwater rapidly attenuates the urban signal from these hydrogeochemical and isotopic tracers. Nevertheless, a gadolinium anomaly, resulting from discharges of urban wastewater containing the contrast agents used for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), highlights the presence of a wastewater plume further along the flow line, that comes with a series of organic molecules, including pharmaceutical residues. Monitoring persistent or reactive molecules along the plume provides a more detailed understanding of the transfer of CECs into groundwater bodies. This highlights the relevance of pharmaceutical compounds as co-tracers for WWTP plume delineation. The present multi-tracer approach for groundwater resource vulnerability towards CECs allows a more in-depth understanding of contaminant transfer and their fate in groundwater.

Fate of nutrients and trace contaminants in a large shallow soda lake. Spatial gradients and underlying processes from the tributary river to the reed belt

Shallow lakes provide a multitude of ecosystem functions, but they are particularly vulnerable to natural and anthropogenic disturbances. Understanding the driving factors determining the fate and spatial distribution of nutrients and pollutants in such systems is fundamental to assess the impact of ongoing or future external pressures endangering their ecological integrity. This study investigates the fate of trace contaminants transported into the large shallow Lake Neusiedl, including contaminants representative of different patterns of sources and emission pathways and of environmental behavior, namely metals, pharmaceuticals, an artificial sweetener and perfluoroalkyl substances. Further, it examines the horizontal spatial distribution of nutrients, ions and physico-chemical parameters with an unprecedented detailed focus on the internal variability within the large reed belt. As described in the past e.g. for chloride, evaporation was identified as the process leading to a substantial concentration enrichment of the industrial chemical PFOA and the sweetener acesulfame K from the tributary river into the open lake. This is particularly relevant in view of the predicted future increase of evapotranspiration due to climate change. In contrast, the observed loss of diclofenac, but also of PFOS and carbamazepine suggests that the well-mixed, humic-rich and alkaline Lake Neusiedl offers favorable conditions for the photodegradation of otherwise very persistent chemicals. Another important finding, in the context of possible modifications in lake water levels due to climate change, is the fundamental role played by the connectivity between open lake and reed belt but also by the presence and characteristics of inner water areas within the reed belt region in determining the hydrochemistry of the lake system. By revealing systematic spatial patterns and by focusing on the underlying factors and processes, the understanding offered by this study is of high value for the conservation of shallow lakes.

Simultaneous detection of pesticides and pharmaceuticals in three types of bio-based fertilizers by an improved QuEChERS method coupled with UHPLC-q-ToF-MS/MS

Bio-based fertilizers (BBFs) have the potential to contain both pesticides and pharmaceutical residues, which may pose a threat to soils, crops, and human health. However, no analytical screening method is available currently to simultaneously analyze a wide range of contaminants in the complex origin-dependent matrices of BBFs. To fill this gap, our study tested and improved an original QuEChERS method (OQM) for simultaneously analyzing 78 pesticides and 18 pharmaceuticals in BBFs of animal, plant, and ashed sewage sludge origin. In spiked recovery experiments, 34-58 pharmaceuticals and pesticides were well recovered (recovery of 70-120%) via OQM at spiking concentrations levels of 10 ng/g and 50 ng/g in these three different types of BBFs. To improve the extraction efficiency further, ultrasonication and end-over-end rotation were added based on OQM, resulting in the improved QuEChERS method (IQM) that could recover 57-79 pesticides and pharmaceuticals, in the range of 70-120%. The detection limits of this method were of 0.16-4.32/0.48-12.97 ng/g, 0.03-11.02/0.10-33.06 ng/g, and 0.06-5.18/0.18-15.54 ng/g for animal, plant, and ash-based BBF, respectively. Finally, the IQM was employed to screen 15 BBF samples of various origins. 15 BBFs contained at least one pesticide or pharmaceutical with ibuprofen being frequently detected in at concentration levels of 4.1-181 ng/g. No compounds were detected in ash-based BBFs.

Occurrence, environmental impact and fate of pharmaceuticals in groundwater and surface water: a critical review

In many nations and locations, groundwater serves as the population's primary drinking water supply. However, pharmaceuticals found in groundwater and surface waters may affect aquatic ecosystems and public health. As a result, their existence in natural raw waters are now more widely acknowledged as a concern. This review summarises the evidence of research on pharmaceuticals' occurrence, impact and fate, considering results from different water bodies. Also, various analytical techniques were reviewed to compare different pharmaceuticals' detection frequencies in water bodies. These include liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS), high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), ultra-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS/MS), and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). However, owing to LC-MS's high sensitivity and specification, it is the most reported instrument used for analysis. The PRISMA reviewing methodology was adopted based on relevant literature in order to focus on aim of the review. Among other pharmaceuticals reviewed, sulfamethoxazole was found to be the most frequently detected drug in wastewater (up to 100% detection frequency). The most reported pharmaceutical group in this review is antibiotics, with sulfamethoxazole having the highest concentration among the analysed pharmaceuticals in groundwater and freshwater (up to 5600 ng/L). Despite extensive study and analysis on the occurrence and fate of pharmaceuticals in the environment, appropriate wastewater management and disposal of pharmaceuticals in the water environment are not still monitored regularly. Therefore, there is a need for mainstream studies tailored to the surveillance of pharmaceuticals in water bodies to limit environmental risks to human and aquatic habitats in both mid and low-income nations.

Influence of Manure as a Complex Mixture on Soil Sorption of Pharmaceuticals-Studies with Selected Chemical Components of Manure

Pharmaceutically active compounds (PhACs) enter soil with organic waste materials such as manure. Such complex substrates differently affect PhACs' soil sorption. For the first time, batch experiments were conducted using five selected chemicals as model constituents to elucidate the effects. Urea, phosphate (KH₂PO₄), acetic acid, phenol and nonadecanoic acid (C:19) altered the sorption strength and/or nonlinearity of sulfadiazine, caffeine, and atenolol in an arable Cambisol topsoil. The nonlinear Freundlich model best described sorption. Overall, the PhACs' Freundlich coefficients (sorption strength) increased in the sequence urea < phosphate < phenol < C:19 < acetic acid, while the Freundlich exponents largely decreased, indicating increasing sorption specificity. The effects on sulfadiazine and caffeine were rather similar, but in many cases different from atenolol. Phosphate mobilized sulfadiazine and caffeine and urea mobilized sulfadiazine, which was explained by sorption competition resulting from specific preference of similar sorption sites. Soil sorbed phenol strongly increased the sorption of all three PhACs; phenolic functional groups are preferred sorption sites of PhACs in soil. The large increase in sorption of all PhACs by acetic acid was attributed to a loosening of the soil organic matter and thus the creation of additional sorption sites. The effect of C:19 fatty acid, however, was inconsistent. These results help to better understand the sorption of PhACs in soil-manure mixtures.

Translating wastewater reuse for irrigation from OECD Guidelines: Tramadol sorption and desorption in soil-water matrices

Treated and untreated wastewater is often used for agricultural irrigation and, despite the many benefits of this practice, it poses the risk of biologically active chemical pollutants (such as pharmaceuticals, like tramadol) entering the environment. The partitioning of tramadol between soil/water at environmentally relevant concentrations is important to understand its environmental toxicity. Kinetics and isotherm sorption studies based on the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) 106 Guideline were undertaken, ensuring comparability to previous studies. Studies were undertaken in three soils of different characteristics using aqueous concentrations of tramadol from 500 ng L^-1 (environmentally relevant) to 100 μg L^-1 (comparable to previous studies). Two of the soils presented a significantly (p < 0.05) higher sorption at a lower initial tramadol concentration (5000 ng L^-1), compared to 20,000 ng L^-1. Hysteresis was observed in all studied soils, indicating the accumulation of tramadol. Higher sorption to soils correlated with higher clay content, with soil/water partitioning coefficients (K_d) of 5.5 ± 13.3, 2.5 ± 3.8 and 0.9 ± 3.0 L kg¹ for soils with clay contents of 41.9%, 24.5% and 7.4%, respectively. Cation exchange was proposed as the main sorption mechanism for tramadol to soils when the pH was below tramadol's pK_a values (9.41 and 13.08). A comparative kinetics study between tramadol in soil/calcium chloride buffer and soil/wastewater effluent demonstrated significantly higher (p < 0.05) tramadol sorption to soil from wastewater effluent. This has the environmental implication that clay soils will be able to retain tramadol from irrigation water, despite the organic content of the irrigation water. Therefore, our studies show that tramadol soil sorption is likely to be higher in agricultural environments reusing wastewater than that predicted from experiments using the OECD 106 Guideline calcium chloride buffer.

Meta-analysis and machine learning to explore soil-water partitioning of common pharmaceuticals

The first meta-analysis and modelling from batch-sorption literature studies of the soil/water partitioning of pharmaceuticals is presented. Analysis of the experimental conditions reported in the literature demonstrated that though batch-sorption studies have value, they are limited in evaluating partitioning under environmentally-relevant conditions. Recommendations are made to utilise environmental relevant pharmaceutical concentrations, perform batch-sorption studies at temperatures other than 4, 20 and 25 °C to better reflect climate diversity, and utilise the Guideline 106 methodology as a benchmark to enable comparison between future studies (and support modelling and prediction). The meta-dataset comprised 82 data points, which were modelled using multivariate analysis; where K_d (soil/water partitioning coefficient) was the independent variable. The dependent variables fit into three categories: 1) pharmaceutical studied (including physical-chemical properties), 2) soil characteristics and 3) experimental conditions. The pharmaceutical solubility, the soil/liquid equilibration time (prior to adding the pharmaceutical), the soil organic carbon, the soil sterilisation method and the liquid phase were found to be significantly important variables for predicting K_d.

Transfer of trace organic compounds in an operational soil-aquifer treatment system assessed through an intrinsic tracer test and transport modelling

Soil Aquifer Treatment (SAT) can provide supplementary treatment of trace organic compounds (TrOCs) such as pharmaceutical and industrial compounds present in Secondary Treated Wastewater (STWW). Concern on presence of unregulated TrOCs in natural systems has raised recently as well as the interest in SAT systems for remediation. The present study quantifies, at the field scale over35 m of lateral groundwater flow, the effectiveness of the Agon-Coutainville SAT system (Manche, Normandy, France) for TrOCs removal by sorption and biodegradation through monitoring of seven TrOCs (oxazepam, carbamazepine, benzotriazole, tolyltriazole, caffein, paracetamol, ibuprofen) and major inorganic compounds as intrinsic tracers in STWW and groundwater during a 34-day STWW infiltration experiment during operational use of the SAT. Cationic exchanges and mixing between groundwater and STWW during the experiment were highlighted by major ions and geochemical simulations. Due to the low thickness of the unsaturated zone, a 1D analytical solution of the advection-dispersion equation (ADE) was applied on chloride data. Chloride was used as conservative intrinsic tracer to calibrate the horizontal flow and transport parameters such as the aquifer dispersion coefficient (D) and the average pore water velocity (ν) allowing estimation of the groundwater residence time. Transport and attenuation of the TrOCs were simulated assuming first-order degradation constant (μ) and linear retardation coefficient (R), calibrated to simulate the observed temporal changes in the breakthrough of TrOCs. Sorption was found to play a role in the transport of TrOCs, notably for oxazepam with a higher linear retardation coefficient value of 2.2, whereas no significant differences of retardation were observed for carbamazepine, tolyltriazole, benzotriazole (1.37, 1.35, 1.36 respectively). Estimated first order degradation rate constants, between 0.03d^-1 for carbamazepine and 0.09d^-1 for tolyltriazole, were generally high compared to the literature, possibly due to favourable redox conditions and important microbial activities within the system. This study provides evidence of the efficiency of the Agon-Coutainville SAT system for the removal of TrOCs.

Highly Effective Removal of Ofloxacin from Water with Copper-Doped ZIF-8

Residual antibiotics in wastewater have gained widespread attention because of their toxicity to humans and the environment. In this work, Cu-doped ZIF-8s (Cu-ZIF-8s) were successfully synthesized by the impregnation of Cu²⁺ in ZIF-8 and applied in the removal of ofloxacin (OFX) from water. Remarkably, excellent adsorption performance was obtained in Cu-ZIF-8s, especially for Cu-ZIF-8-1, in which the adsorption capacity (599.96 mg·g⁻¹) was 4.2 times higher than that of ZIF-8 and superior to various adsorbents reported previously. The adsorption kinetics and adsorption isotherm follow the pseudo-second-order model and the Langmuir model, respectively. Furthermore, the removal efficiencies of OFX in Cu-ZIF-8-1 reached over 90% at low concentrations. It was revealed that electrostatic interaction and complexation play important roles in the adsorption process. In addition, the material can be regenerated by simple methods. Therefore, the obtained Cu-doped MOFs may have a promising application in the treatment of antibiotic-containing wastewater.

Intra aquifer variations in pesticide sorption during a field injection experiment

A field injection experiment was performed in an anoxic sandy aquifer over 6 days to assess sorption characteristics of 7 commonly applied pesticides in agriculture and 2 frequently detected metabolites. Pesticide use changed considerably in the last decades, and there is insufficient knowledge of the fate of currently used pesticides in aquifers. Injected water arrival was monitored at 6 depth intervals of 1 m ranging from 11.4 to 32.2 m-below surface level with varying organic carbon contents (0.057-0.91%d.w.) to examine intra-aquifer variations in sorption. Observed pesticide concentrations were fit using a non-linear least squares routine to an advection-dispersion equation, from which retardation factors (R) were obtained. Pesticide degradation did not significantly influence the simulated R during the experiment. We observed that bentazon and cycloxydim were most mobile with R < 1.1 at all depths. Desphenyl chloridazon, methyl desphenyl chloridazon, and imidacloprid were, on average, less mobile, with maximum R of 1.5. Boscalid, chloridazon, fluopyram, and flutolanil showed a larger range of R, and R > 2.0 were observed in the shallowest part of the aquifer. Largest R were observed at the top of the aquifer and decreased with depth. K_oc values varied similarly, which indicates that sorption is not only influenced by sedimentary organic matter (SOM) content but also by its sorption reactivity. Obtained sorption parameters were substantially lower than reported in a widely used pesticide sorption database, which suggests that sorption parameters are influenced by methodological differences and variations in the sorption reactivity of SOM. The large intra-aquifer variations in pesticide sorption highlights that aquifer heterogeneity should be considered in groundwater risk assessments.

Interaction of pig manure-derived dissolved organic matter with soil affects sorption of sulfadiazine, caffeine and atenolol pharmaceuticals

Pharmaceutically active compounds (PhACs) released into the environment have an adverse impact on the soil and water ecosystem as well as human health. Sorption of PhACs by soils and its potential modification through introduced DOM in the applied animal manure or treated wastewater (TWW) determines the mobility and environmental relevance of PhACs. Sulfadiazine, caffeine and atenolol were selected as target PhACs to investigate their sorption behaviors by five selected arable soils in the absence and presence of pig manure DOM. Sulfadiazine was least sorbed, followed by caffeine and atenolol according to the Freundlich sorption isotherm fit (soil average K_f [μg^(1-n) mLⁿ g^-1] 4.07, 9.06, 18.92, respectively). The addition of manure DOM (31.34 mg C L^-1) decreased the sorption of sulfadiazine and especially of caffeine and atenolol (average K_f 3.04, 6.17, 5.79, respectively). Freundlich sorption isotherms of the PhACs became more nonlinear in the presence of manure DOM (Freundlich exponent n changed from 0.74-1.40 to 0.62-1.12), implying more heterogeneous sorption of PhACs in soil-DOM binary systems. Sorption competition of DOM molecules with sulfadiazine and caffeine mostly contributed to their decreased soil sorption when DOM was present. In contrast, the formation of DOM-atenolol associates in the solution phase caused the largely decreased soil sorption of atenolol in the presence of DOM. It is suggested that DOM concentration (e.g., ≥ 60 mg C L^-1) and its interaction with PhACs should be taken into consideration when assessing the environmental impact of land application of animal manure or irrigation with TWW.

A Review of Caffeine Adsorption Studies onto Various Types of Adsorbents

A systematic literature review of publications from 2000 to 2020 was carried out to identify research trends on adsorbent materials for the removal of caffeine from aqueous solutions. Publications were retrieved from three databases (Scopus, Web of Science, and Google Scholar). Words "adsorption AND caffeine" were examined into titles, abstracts, and keywords. A brief bibliometric analysis was performed with emphasis on the type of publication and of most cited articles. Materials for the removal of caffeine were classified according to the type of material into three main groups: organic, inorganic, and composites, each of them subdivided into different subgroups consistent with their origin or production. Tables resume for each subgroup of adsorbents the key information: specific surface area, dose, pH, maximum adsorption capacity, and isotherm models for the removal of caffeine. The highest adsorption capacities were achieved by organic adsorbents, specifically those with granular activated carbon (1961.3 mg/g) and grape stalk activated carbon (916.7 mg/g). Phenyl-phosphate-based porous organic polymer (301 mg/g), natural sandy loam sediment (221.2 mg/g), composites of MCM-48 encapsulated graphene oxide (153.8 mg/g), and organically modified clay (143.7 mg/g) showed adsorption capacities lower than those of activated carbons. In some activated carbons, a relation between the specific surface area (SSA) and the maximum adsorption capacity (Q max) was found.

Occurrence, sources and fate of pharmaceuticals and personal care products and artificial sweeteners in groundwater

Groundwater is considered as the main source for supplying the public drinking water in many countries and regions; however, pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) and artificial sweeteners (ASs) found in groundwater can exert harmful effects on human health and aquatic ecosystems, and therefore, they are of persistent concern. The recent data on the occurrence of a series of PPCPs (including antibiotics, excitants and lipid regulators) and ASs often detected in groundwater are reviewed, in which the PPCPs and ASs occur in groundwater at the concentration from several nanograms to several micrograms per litre. In addition, the spatio-temporal distribution characteristics of PPCPs and ASs are discussed and the main sources and possibly pollution pathways of PPCPs and ASs in groundwater are summarised and analysed. Additionally, the adsorption, migration and degradation of PPCPs and ASs in underground environments are evaluated. Due to the long residence time in groundwater, pollutants are likely to threaten the freshwater body for decades under certain conditions. Therefore, according to the current level of pollution, it is necessary to improve and enhance the supervision on PPCP and AS pollutants and prevent and control groundwater pollution.

Emerging organic compounds in European groundwater

In Europe, emerging organic compounds (EOCs) in groundwater is a growing research area. Prioritisation for monitoring EOCs in Europe was formalised in 2019 through the development of the first voluntary groundwater watch list (GWWL). Despite this, groundwater occurrence data in the peer reviewed literature for Europe has not been reviewed to date. Questions surrounding the effect, toxicity, movement in the subsurface and unsaturated zone make the process of regulating EOC use difficult. The aim in Europe is to develop a unified strategy for the classification, and prioritisation of EOCs to be monitored in groundwater. This paper compiles evidence from the recent published studies from across Europe, since 2012, when the last major literature global review of EOCs in groundwater took place. A total of 39 studies were identified for review based on specific selection criteria (geography, publication date, sample size>10, inclusion of EOCs data). Data on specific compounds, and associated meta-data, are compiled and reviewed. The two most frequently detected EOCs, carbamazepine and caffeine, occurred in groundwater at concentrations of up to 2.3 and 14.8 μg/L, respectively. The most frequently reported category of compounds were 'Pharmaceuticals'; a highly studied group with 135 compounds identified within 31 of the 39 studies. In Europe, the majority of reviewed studies (23) were at a regional scale, looking specifically at EOCs in a specific city or aquifer. The use of analytical methods is not uniform across Europe, and this inevitably influences the current assessment of EOCs in groundwater. A correlation between the number of compounds analysed for, and the number detected in groundwater highlights the need for further studies, especially larger-scale studies throughout Europe. For the development of EU and national regulation, further work is required to understand the occurrence and impacts of EOCs in groundwater throughout Europe and elsewhere.

Sorption and biodegradation parameters of selected pharmaceuticals in laboratory column experiments

Pharmaceutically active compounds have increasingly been detected in groundwater worldwide. Despite constituting a risk for human health and ecosystems, their fate in the environment has still not been exhaustively investigated. This study characterizes the transport behavior of five selected pharmaceutically active compounds (antipyrine, atenolol, caffeine, carbamazepine and sulfamethoxazole) in two sediments (coarse quartz sand and sandy loam) using column experiments with long-term injection of spiked groundwater. Transport parameters were estimated using an analytical reactive transport model. When five selected compounds were injected simultaneously, transport behavior of antipyrine, carbamazepine and the antibiotic sulfamethoxazole were similar to the conservative tracer in both sediments and under varying redox conditions. Atenolol and caffeine were retarded significantly stronger in the sandy loam sediment than in the coarse quartz sand. Biodegradation of caffeine was observed in both sediments after an adaption period and depended on dissolved oxygen. The identification of biodegradation processes was supported by monitoring of intracellular adenosine triphosphate (ATP_itc) as a measure for microbial activity. ATP_itc was present in varying concentrations in all sediments and was highest when biodegradation of pharmaceuticals, especially caffeine, was observed. When only caffeine and sulfamethoxazole were injected simultaneously, sulfamethoxazole was degraded while caffeine degradation was reduced. The latter seemed to be influenced by low concentrations in dissolved oxygen rather than the presence of the antibiotic sulfamethoxazole. Results of these experiments emphasize the impact on pharmaceutical sorption and (bio)degradation of sediment type and redox conditions, as well as available time for microbial adaption and the combination of pharmaceuticals that are released together into groundwater.

Approach to the Dynamic of Carbamazepine and its Main Metabolites in Soil Contamination through the Reuse of Wastewater and Sewage Sludge

The release of pharmaceutically active compounds to the soils through the application of sewage sludge and the irrigation with wastewater, or even with surface water, is constant. The adsorption of these compounds onto the soil is one of the key factors affecting their fate in the environment and their potential environmental risks. In this work, the adsorption of carbamazepine (CBZ) and its metabolites, 3-hydroxy-carbamazepine (3OH-CBZ), carbamazepine-10,11-dihydro-10,11-epoxide (EP-CBZ), and 10,11-dihydro-10-hydroxycarbamazepine (10OH-CBZ), in three Mediterranean soils was evaluated using single-solute and four-solute experiments. The highest adsorptions were measured for 3OH-CBZ, followed by CBZ, EP-CBZ, and 10OH-CBZ, in that order. A high influence of the physicochemical characteristics of the compounds, pH, and soil characteristics in the adsorption of the studied compounds was observed and corroborated by the statistical analysis of the results. Moreover, a good fit was observed in the three isotherm models evaluated (linear, Freundlich, and Langmuir) in single-solute experiments (R² > 0.90). However, a decrease of the measured adsorptions and a worse fit to the isotherm models were observed in the case of multiple-solute experiments. This could be mainly due to the competition established between the studied compounds for the active sites of the soils.

Adsorption, Bioavailability and Microbial Toxicity of Diclofenac in Agricultural Soil

Persistence and environmental implication of pharmaceuticals in agricultural soil is determined depending on adsorption, bioavailability and toxicity. This study aims to assess adsorption/partitioning behaviour of diclofenac (DCF) and its impact on microbial activity in four agricultural soils, differing in pH, organic carbon content, and cation exchange capacity. Results from batch studies suggests that soil/water partition coefficients of DCF are essentially nonlinear, i.e. depends on drug amount (p = 0.001), and positively correlated with soil organic carbon (p = 0.008). The adsorption data can effectively be modelled using Freundlich isotherm (regression coefficients between 0.84 and 0.90). In soil incubation studies, DCF could not be detected after 6 days of spiking (20 µg/g) in all soil types, including abiotic control. This suggests an interplay of combined biotic/abiotic process in DCF removal. Though microbial activity (based on tetrazolium reduction) declined with incubation time, but was not correlated with DCF exposure, particularly in soils rich in organic carbon.

Effects of clay colloids on ciprofloxacin transport in saturated quartz sand porous media under different solution chemistry conditions

Antibiotics, a highly prevalent class of environmental organic pollutants, are becoming a matter of global concern. Clay minerals that are ubiquitous in subsurface environments may play an important role in the fate and transport of antibiotics. Taking ciprofloxacin (CIP) as a model antibiotic, this work explored the role of clay colloids (kaolinite and montmorillonite) on the adsorption and transport of CIP under different chemical solution conditions. The adsorption isotherms showed that montmorillonite colloids had a larger CIP sorption capacity than kaolinite colloids. The results of transport experiments indicated that montmorillonite colloids could promote CIP transport in saturated sand columns, but the addition of kaolinite colloids affected CIP mobility to a much smaller extent. The much stronger transport-enhancement effect of montmorillonite colloids was due to CIP adsorbed strongly to the colloids and desorption hysteresis of colloid-adsorbed CIP, likely stemming from the intercalation of this antibiotic in the interlayer of montmorillonite. Interestingly, transport of clay colloids increased with the increasing pH from 5.0 to 9.0; however, CIP transport decreased with the increasing pH in the presence of clay colloids. The observations were likely attributable to pH-dependent ciprofloxacin adsorption/desorption to clay minerals. Increasing the concentrations of NaCl and CaCl₂ generally decreased the contaminant-mobilizing ability of montmorillonite colloids, mainly by increasing the aggregation of colloids and thus, decreasing the transport of colloid-adsorbed CIP. Moreover, under the test conditions (1 mM NaCl and pH 7.0), the presence of CIP inhibited the transport of clay colloids due to the increase in aggregate size of clay colloids with the addition of CIP. Overall, these findings suggest that clay colloids with high adsorption abilities for antibiotics in the subsurface environment may act as a carrier for certain antibiotic compounds.

Estimating the transport parameters of propyphenazone, caffeine and carbamazepine by means of a tracer experiment in a coarse-gravel unsaturated zone

Among the emerging contaminants today, pharmaceuticals are some of the most demanding chemical compounds when it comes to understanding their transport within aquifers. The transport of pharmaceuticals in an unsaturated zone is influenced by many factors, including compound sorption and degradation, which is essential in assessing contaminant migration in soil and groundwater. Coarse-gravel aquifers are particularly important for drinking water sources and industrial water supply. Globally, little data on the transport characteristics of coarse-gravel unsaturated zones is available. However, such data is crucial to understanding the transport of pollutants and to implementing the appropriate management strategies to protect the aquifers. In this article, we present tracer experiments employed to determine pharmaceutical transport parameters in the coarse-gravel unsaturated zone. The tracer experiment was performed as a multi-tracer exercise, where deuterated water was infiltrated as a conservative tracer to define the characteristics of the unsaturated zone, together with pharmaceuticals (propyphenazone, caffeine and carbamazepine) as reactive tracers. Based on the breakthrough curves measured at various depths, inverse modelling in combination with analytical and numerical methods (HYDRUS-1D) was performed. Hydraulic parameters for the unsaturated zone were estimated. Linear sorption coefficients (Kd) and degradation half-lives (t_1/2) were evaluated for each pharmaceutical. In the unsaturated zone of the coarse-gravel aquifer caffeine has the lowest sorption capacity (mean Kd = 0.027 Lkg^-1), while the sorption coefficient of propyphenazone is higher (Kd = 0.07 Lkg^-1). Results for the degradation constant of the first order and t_1/2 indicate that caffeine has the fastest decay rate (highest t_1/2 = 69.3 days), followed by propyphenazone (highest t_1/2 = 92.4 days). The parameters for carbamazepine could not be determined using an advection dispersion equation.

Insights on adsorption of carbamazepine onto iron oxide modified diatomaceous earth: Kinetics, isotherms, thermodynamics, and mechanisms

To ameliorate adsorbent recovery by an external magnetic field, naturally occurring diatomaceous earth (DE) was modified with iron-oxide, characterized and applied for adsorption of carbamazepine (CBZ) from synthetic wastewater using batch equilibration method. The fabricated adsorbent was characterized using XRF, XRD, SEM-EDX, FT-IR, BET surface area analysis, VSM and pH of point of zero charge (pH_pzc) determination. The adsorption rate was described by the pseudo-first-order (PFO) model suggesting a physisorption controlled rate-determining step. Equilibrium adsorption data were fitted to linear and nonlinear isotherm models, viz Langmuir and Freundlich models, and were best described by Freundlich nonlinear equations implying heterogeneous multilayer adsorption. The best-fitting kinetic and isotherm model was determined using four mathematical error functions. The thermodynamic parameters, namely enthalpy (ΔH = -26.4 kJ mol^-1), Gibbs free energy (ΔG = -2.22 kJ mol^-1 at 298 K), entropy (ΔS = -34.0 kJ mol^-1), indicated that the adsorption was a spontaneous, exothermic, and physical process. The adsorption mechanism is postulated to involve cation-π interactions. Modified diatomaceous earth is a potentially excellent, low-cost, and novel sorbent for CBZ adsorption with 88% removal in 180 min and provides a possible alternative adsorbent for wastewater treatment.

Column Experiments on Sorption Coefficients and Biodegradation Rates of Selected Pharmaceuticals in Three Aquifer Sediments

The presence of pharmaceuticals in the environment, and in groundwater, has been recognized as a great environmental concern. Biodegradation and sorption are the main processes leading to the removal of contamination from the water phase. The aim of this study was to determine the transport processes of selected pharmaceuticals (antipyrine, atenolol, carbamazepine, caffeine, diclofenac, ketoprofen, sulfamethoxazole) in selected sediments (coarse sand, medium sand, sandy loam) in laboratory experiments. Moreover, the impact of flow velocities on the sorption and degradation rates of the selected compounds was studied. Column experiments were performed at three flow velocities, under abiotic and biotic conditions, applying conservative (bromide) and reactive tracers (pharmaceuticals). From the breakthrough curves, retardation factors and degradation rates were determined and the influence of variable flow conditions on transport parameters was evaluated. Low observed concentrations and recoveries of atenolol indicated a strong influence of sorption on its transport. Diclofenac, caffeine, and carbamazepine were also affected by sorption but to a lesser extent. Sulfamethoxazole, ketoprofen, and antipyrine were recovered nearly completely, indicating an almost conservative transport behavior. Biodegradation was small for all the compounds, as the results from biotic and abiotic column experiments were similar. Transport of the tested pharmaceuticals was not influenced by different flow velocities, as similar modelled degradation rates and retardation factors were found for all tested flow velocities.

Current progress in the adsorption, transport and biodegradation of antibiotics in soil

Antibiotic residues in soil may cause potential risks to human health and soil ecosystems. To avoid these potential risks, comprehensive study of the adsorption, transport and biodegradation of antibiotics in soil is very imperative. This review provided current views about the most recent studies, which have been conducted toward the adsorption, transport and biodegradation of antibiotics in soil. The influencing factors affecting the adsorption behaviors of antibiotics in soil, including the antibiotics properties (e.g., molecular structure, hydrophobicity, polarity, polarizability, and spatial configuration) and the soil characteristics (e.g., soil type, soil pH, coexisting ions, and soil organic matter), were discussed. The effects of fertilizer colloids, porous media, and pH of soil on the transport behaviors of antibiotics were analyzed. The biodegradation of antibiotics in soil were also highlighted by investigating the effects of soil microbiome, soil pH, soil temperature, and interactions between antibiotics. Prospects of antibiotics adsorption, transport and biodegradation were also proposed.

Assessing the Influence of Environmental Factors on Groundwater Antibiotic Occurrence by Means of Variation Partitioning

The spatial distribution of antibiotics in alluvial aquifers presents a large variability caused by the joint action of several factors including hydrology, land use, and groundwater properties. In this study, the influences of these factors on the spatial variability of antibiotics is evaluated based on an extensive database of 47 wells located in the Baix Fluvià alluvial aquifer (NE Catalonia). Statistical methods such as redundancy and variation partitioning (VP) analyses, which are not commonly used in hydrogeological studies, are herein tested and used to estimate the effects of environmental factors on the observed antibiotic occurrence. Using VP, the total explained variation of the antibiotic distribution only reaches 18% of the total variability, meaning that the whole set of explanatory parameters is insufficient or inadequate to describe the occurrence of antibiotics and their concentration. The results point out that groundwater properties are the most representative parameters, while those related to antibiotic sources and aquifer susceptibility have lower influences. Omitting solute transport parameters that actually govern antibiotic fate (i.e., sorption coefficients and degradation rates) from the statistical analysis limited the success of the VP results. VP thus highlights the importance of researching antibiotic transport in groundwater by determining the reactive properties of these pollutants above other hydrogeochemical variables. We conclude that the present capacity to predict antibiotic existence at a specific location—for instance, a supply well—based on field data is still poor and unrepresentative, being an impediment for groundwater pollution management.
