Growth factor-functionalized titanium implants for enhanced bone regeneration: A review

Titanium and titanium alloys are widely favored materials for orthopedic implants due to their exceptional mechanical properties and biological inertness. The additional benefit of sustained local release of bioactive substances further promotes bone tissue formation, thereby augmenting the osseointegration capacity of titanium implants and attracting increasing attention in bone tissue engineering. Among these bioactive substances, growth factors have shown remarkable osteogenic and angiogenic induction capabilities. Consequently, researchers have developed various physical, chemical, and biological loading techniques to incorporate growth factors into titanium implants, ensuring controlled release kinetics. In contrast to conventional treatment modalities, the localized release of growth factors from functionalized titanium implants not only enhances osseointegration but also reduces the risk of complications. This review provides a comprehensive examination of the types and mechanisms of growth factors, along with a detailed exploration of the methodologies used to load growth factors onto the surface of titanium implants. Moreover, it highlights recent advancements in the application of growth factors to the surface of titanium implants (Scheme 1). Finally, the review discusses current limitations and future prospects for growth factor-functionalized titanium implants. In summary, this paper presents cutting-edge design strategies aimed at enhancing the bone regenerative capacity of growth factor-functionalized titanium implants-a significant advancement in the field of enhanced bone regeneration.

Cell-permeable bone morphogenetic protein 2 facilitates bone regeneration by promoting osteogenesis

The use of the FDA-approved osteoinductive growth factor BMP2 is widespread for bone regeneration. However, its clinical application has been hindered by limitations in cell permeability and a short half-life in circulation. To address this issue, we have developed a modified version of BMP2, referred to as Cell Permeable (CP)-BMP2, which possesses improved cell permeability. CP-BMP2 incorporates an advanced macromolecular transduction domain (aMTD) to facilitate transfer across the plasma membrane, a solubilization domain, and recombinant human BMP2. Compared to traditional rhBMP2, CP-BMP2 exhibits enhanced cell permeability, solubility, and bioavailability, and activates Smad phosphorylation through binding to BMP receptor 2. The effectiveness of CP-BMP2 was evaluated in three animal studies focusing on bone regeneration. In the initial study, mice and rabbits with critical-size calvarial defects received subcutaneous (SC) injections of CP-BMP2 and rhBMP2 (7.5 mg/kg, 3 injections per week for 8 weeks).Following 8 weeks of administration, CP-BMP2 demonstrated a remarkable 65 % increase in bone formation in mice when compared to both the vehicle and rhBMP2. Moreover, rabbits exhibited faster bone formation, characterized by a filling pattern originating from the center. In a subsequent study involving injured horses, hind limb bones treated with CP-BMP2 exhibited an 85 % higher bone regeneration rate, as evidenced by Micro-CT results, in contrast to horses treated with the vehicle or rhBMP2 (administered at 150 μg/defect, subcutaneously, once a week for 8 weeks, without a scaffold). These results underscore the potential of CP-BMP2 to facilitate rapid and effective healing. No noticeable adverse effects, such as ectopic bone formation, were observed in any of the studies. Overall, our findings demonstrate that CP-BMP2 holds therapeutic potential as a novel and effective osteogenic agent.

Antibacterial catechol-based hyaluronic acid, chitosan and poly (N-vinyl pyrrolidone) coatings onto Ti6Al4V surfaces for application as biomedical implant

Bacterial contamination in implanted biomedical devices is a critical daily concern. The most used material for permanent implant in biomedical field is Ti6Al4V alloy due to its beneficial mechanical properties and high biocompatibility. Accordingly, in this work different polymeric antibacterial coatings poly(N-vinyl pyrrolidone) (PVP), hyaluronic acid (HA) and chitosan (CHI) were developed and comparatively analysed for Ti6Al4V surface covering. The adhesion of these coatings to Ti6Al4V substrates were carried out after the conjugation of these polymers with the so well-known bioadhesive properties of catechol (CA) anchor group. These surface modifications were characterized by X-ray photoelectronic spectroscopy, contact angle measurements and atomic force microscopy. In addition, the stability of CA-conjugated polymeric coatings was compared with the coatings formed with unconjugated polymers. Finally, the cytocompatibility and antibacterial properties against gram-positive and gram-negative strains on coated Ti6Al4V substrates were assessed confirming the effectiveness of these polymeric coatings against bacterial infections for future applications in protecting biomedical implants.

Sprayable hydrogel dressing accelerates wound healing with combined reactive oxygen species-scavenging and antibacterial abilities

Wound management poses a considerable economic burden on the global healthcare system, considering the impacts of wound infection, delayed healing and scar formation. To this end, multifunctional dressings based on hydrogels have been developed to stimulate skin healing. Herein, we describe the design, fabrication, and characterization of a sprayable hydrogel-based wound dressing loaded with cerium oxide nanoparticles (CeONs) and an antimicrobial peptide (AMP), for combined reactive oxygen species (ROS)-scavenging and antibacterial properties. We adopted a mussel-inspired strategy to chemically conjugate gelatin with dopamine motifs and prepared a hydrogel dressing with improved binding affinity to wet skin surfaces. Additionally, the release of AMP from the hydrogel demonstrated rapid release ablation and contact ablation against four representative bacterial strains, confirming the desired antimicrobial activities. Moreover, the CeONs-loaded hydrogel dressing exhibited favorable ROS-scavenging abilities. The biocompatibility of the multifunctional hydrogel dressing was further proven in vitro by culturing with HaCaT cells. Overall, the benefits of the developed hydrogel wound dressing, including sprayability, adhesiveness, antimicrobial activity, as well as ROS-scavenging and skin-remodeling ability, highlight its promissing translational potentials in wound management. STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE: Various hydrogel-based wound-dressing materials have been developed to stimulate wound healing. However, from the clinical perspective, few of the current wound dressings meet all the intended multifunctional requirements of preventing infection, promoting rapid wound closure, and minimizing scar formation, while simultaneously offering the convenience of application. In the current study, we adopted a mussel-inspired strategy to functionalize the GelMA hydrogels with DOPA to fabricate GelMA-DOPA hydrogel which exhibited an enhanced binding affinity for wound surfaces, AMP HHC-36 and CeONs are further encapsulated into the GelMA-DOPA hydrogel to confer the hydrogel wound dressing with antimicrobial and ROS-scavenging abilities. The GelMA-DOPA-AMP-CeONs dressing offered the benefits of sprayability, adhesiveness, antimicrobial activity, as well as ROS-scavenging and skin-remodeling ability, which might address the therapeutic and economic burdens associated with chronic wound treatment and management.

Mussel bioinspired morphosynthesis of substrate anchored core-shell silver self-assemblies with multifunctionality for bioapplications

Core-shell nanoparticles (CSNs) have numerous intriguing properties for advanced device applications, while it remains challenging to directly grow them from a solid substrate. Here, we report a simple mussel-bioinspired solid chemistry strategy for in-situ synthesis of CSNs that are substrate anchored and morphologically tunable for wide-ranging biotechnological applications. Briefly, silver titanate was hydrothermally grown on template titanium and subjected to reaction with mussel-derived dopamine. The synergistic reactivity between silver titanate and dopamine prompted nanosilver/polydopamine (nAg/PD) CSNs to spontaneously assemble and grow on substrate. These CSNs possessed reaction time-dependent dimensions and morphologies, which were related to differing physiochemical properties and biological behaviors. Specifically, the CSNs-modified substrates demonstrated enhanced protein affinity and durable radical scavenging properties. In addition, they manifested remarkable yet robust release-killing and anti-biofilm activities against pathogenic Staphylococcus aureus bacteria. More delightedly, the surface-engineered substrates guaranteed the victory of the anti-infective battle of osteoblastic cells during cell/bacteria coculture, promising applications in implantable medical devices. The adaptability of this strategy was demonstrated by modifying complicated 3D-printed macroporous tissue engineering scaffolds. Intriguingly, the CSNs-modified scaffolds exhibited photothermal performances that bode well for phototherapy. To sum, our strategy combines the simplicity of synthesis modality, the controllability of core-shell silver structures, and the versatility of material functions. The resulting assemblies can enrich the library of nAg-based core-shell engineered nanomaterials.

Dental materials implant alloys: a X-ray fluorescence analysis on FDS76®

BACKGROUND

Currently in dentistry, scientific research has been conducted in the study of dental implants. Being able to optimize dental implants, in all its mechanical and biological components, is the main objective of the research. The purpose of this article was to evaluate the structure and the molecular features of dental implant titanium alloy.

METHODS

Two different internal hexagonal connection systems belonging to FDS76^® have been used as sample. Beyond the literature search, fixture and abutment surface through an X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF) method have been analyzed.

RESULTS

The surfaces have achieved an excellent level of quality and low impurity, according to commercial pure titanium alloy.

CONCLUSIONS

This information will surely bring useful information to evaluate the quality of this type of alloy and possibly improve its features.

Polydopamine Linking Substrate for AMPs: Characterisation and Stability on Ti6Al4V

Infections are common complications in joint replacement surgeries. Eradicated infections can lead to implant failure. In this paper, analogues of the peptide KR-12 derived from the human cathelicidin LL-37 were designed, synthesised, and characterised. The designed antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) were attached to the surface of a titanium alloy, Ti6Al4V, by conjugation to a polydopamine linking substrate. The topography of the polydopamine coating was evaluated by electron microscopy and coating thickness measurements were performed with ellipsometry and Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM). The subsequently attached peptide stability was investigated with release profile studies in simulated body fluid, using both fluorescence imaging and High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC). Finally, the hydrophobicity of the coating was characterised by water contact angle measurements. The designed AMPs were shown to provide long-term bonding to the polydopamine-coated Ti6Al4V surfaces.

Simple and facile preparation of recombinant human bone morphogenetic protein-2 immobilized titanium implant via initiated chemical vapor deposition technique to promote osteogenesis for bone tissue engineering application

Over the past few decades, titanium (Ti) implants have been widely used to repair fractured bones. To promote osteogenesis, immobilization of osteoinductive agents, such as recombinant human bone morphogenic protein-2 (rhBMP2), onto the Ti surface is required. In this study, we prepared rhBMP2 immobilized on glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) deposited Ti surface through initiated chemical vapor deposition (iCVD) technique. After preparation, the bio-functionalized Ti surface was characterized by physicochemical analysis. For in vitro analysis, the developed Ti was evaluated by cell proliferation, alkaline phosphatase activity, calcium deposition, and real-time polymerase chain reaction to verify their osteogenic activity against human adipose-derived stem cells (hASCs). The GMA deposited Ti surface was found to effectively immobilize a large dose of rhBMP2 as compared to untreated Ti. Additionally, rhBMP2 immobilized on Ti showed significantly enhanced osteogenic differentiation and increased calcium deposition with nontoxic cell viability. These results clearly confirm that our strategy may provide a simple, solvent-free strategy to prepare an osteoinductive Ti surface for bone tissue engineering applications.

Core-shell cylinder (CSC) nanotemplates comprising mussel-inspired catechol-containing triblock copolymers for silver nanoparticle arrays and ion conductive channels

Catechol moieties, which are found in mussel-adhesive proteins, allow the interaction of various kinds of materials that results in substantial adhesion to a wide variety of materials and in the reduction of metal ions to solid metals. Various types of catechol-containing polymers mimicking adhesion and reduction properties have been reported, however, due to its reactivity to a wide variety of functional groups, only a few reports about the formation of block and sequence controlled copolymers containing catechol groups. This is the first report about the synthesis of triblock copolymers containing catechol groups by reversible-addition fragmentation transfer (RAFT) polymerization. The synthesized triblock copolymer forms a core-shell cylinder (CSC) phase-separated structure, in which PVCa domains located the surface of cylinders, and it works as a template for silver nanoparticle arrays and a proton conductive channel. Since triblock copolymer has broader latitude to form phase-separated structures, the triblock copolymer containing catechol groups can be suitable for templates of inorganic nanoparticle arrays.

Antimicrobial and Osseointegration Properties of Nanostructured Titanium Orthopaedic Implants

The surface design of titanium implants influences not only the local biological reactions but also affects at least the clinical result in orthopaedic application. During the last decades, strong efforts have been made to improve osteointegration and prevent bacterial adhesion to these surfaces. Following the rule of “smaller, faster, cheaper”, nanotechnology has encountered clinical application. It is evident that the hierarchical implant surface micro- and nanotopography orchestrate the biological cascades of early peri-implant endosseous healing or implant loosening. This review of the literature gives a brief overview of nanostructured titanium-base biomaterials designed to improve osteointegration and prevent from bacterial infection.

GSK-3β inhibition suppresses instability-induced osteolysis by a dual action on osteoblast and osteoclast differentiation

Currently, there are no medications available to treat aseptic loosening of orthopedic implants. Using osteoprotegerin fusion protein (OPG-Fc), we previously blocked instability-induced osteoclast differentiation and peri-prosthetic osteolysis. Wnt/β-catenin signaling, which regulates OPG secretion from osteoblasts, also modulates the bone tissue response to mechanical loading. We hypothesized that activating Wnt/β-catenin signaling by inhibiting glycogen synthase kinase-3β (GSK-3β) would reduce instability-induced bone loss through regulation of both osteoblast and osteoclast differentiation. We examined effects of GSK-3β inhibition on regulation of RANKL and OPG in a rat model of mechanical instability-induced peri-implant osteolysis. The rats were treated daily with a GSK-3β inhibitor, AR28 (20 mg/kg bw), for up to 5 days. Bone tissue and blood serum were assessed by qRT-PCR, immunohistochemistry, and ELISA on days 3 and 5, and by micro-CT on day 5. After 3 days of treatment with AR28, mRNA levels of β-catenin, Runx2, Osterix, Col1α1, and ALP were increased leading to higher osteoblast numbers compared to vehicle-treated animals. BMP-2 and Wnt16 mRNA levels were downregulated by mechanical instability and this was rescued by GSK-3β inhibition. Osteoclast numbers were decreased significantly after 3 days of GSK-3β inhibition, which correlated with enhanced OPG mRNA expression. This was accompanied by decreased serum levels of TRAP5b on days 3 and 5. Treatment with AR28 upregulated osteoblast differentiation, while osteoclastogenesis was blunted, leading to increased bone mass by day 5. These data suggest that GSK-3β inactivation suppresses osteolysis through regulating both osteoblast and osteoclast differentiation in a rat model of instability-induced osteolysis.

Mussel-Inspired Multifunctional Hydrogel Coating for Prevention of Infections and Enhanced Osteogenesis

Prevention of postsurgery infection and promotion of biointegration are the key factors to achieve long-term success in orthopedic implants. Localized delivery of antibiotics and bioactive molecules by the implant surface serves as a promising approach toward these goals. However, previously reported methods for surface functionalization of the titanium alloy implants to load bioactive ingredients suffer from time-consuming complex processes and lack of long-term stability. Here, we present the design and characterization of an adhesive, osteoconductive, and antimicrobial hydrogel coating for Ti implants. To form this multifunctional hydrogel, a photo-cross-linkable gelatin-based hydrogel was modified with catechol motifs to enhance adhesion to Ti surfaces and thus promote coating stability. To induce antimicrobial and osteoconductive properties, a short cationic antimicrobial peptide (AMP) and synthetic silicate nanoparticles (SNs) were introduced into the hydrogel formulation. The controlled release of AMP loaded in the hydrogel demonstrated excellent antimicrobial activity to prevent biofilm formation. Moreover, the addition of SNs to the hydrogel formulation enhanced osteogenesis when cultured with human mesenchymal stem cells, suggesting the potential to promote new bone formation in the surrounding tissues. Considering the unique features of our implant hydrogel coating, including high adhesion, antimicrobial capability, and the ability to induce osteogenesis, it is believed that our design provides a useful alternative method for bone implant surface modification and functionalization.

Strategies for delivering bone morphogenetic protein for bone healing

Bone morphogenetic proteins (BMPs) are the most significant growth factors that belong to the Transforming Growth Factor Beta (TGF-β) super-family. Though more than twenty members of this family have been identified so far in humans, Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved two growth factors: BMP-2 and BMP-7 for treatments of spinal fusion and long-bone fractures with collagen carriers. Currently BMPs are clinically used in spinal fusion, oral and maxillofacial surgery and also in the repair of long bone defects. The efficiency of BMPs depends a lot on the selection of suitable carriers. At present, different types of carrier materials are used: natural and synthetic polymers, calcium phosphate and ceramic-polymer composite materials. Number of research articles has been published on the minute intricacies of the loading process and release kinetics of BMPs. Despite the significant evidence of its potential for bone healing demonstrated in animal models, future clinical investigations are needed to define dose, scaffold and route of administration. The efficacy and application of BMPs in various levels with a proper carrier and dose is yet to be established. The present article collates various aspects of success and limitation and identifies the prospects and challenges associated with the use of BMPs in orthopaedic surgery.

Bio-functionalization of biomedical metals

Bio-functionalization means to endow biomaterials with bio-functions so as to make the materials or devices more suitable for biomedical applications. Traditionally, because of the excellent mechanical properties, the biomedical metals have been widely used in clinic. However, the utilized functions are basically supporting or fixation especially for the implantable devices. Nowadays, some new functions, including bioactivity, anti-tumor, anti-microbial, and so on, are introduced to biomedical metals. To realize those bio-functions on the metallic biomedical materials, surface modification is the most commonly used method. Surface modification, including physical and chemical methods, is an effective way to alter the surface morphology and composition of biomaterials. It can endow the biomedical metals with new surface properties while still retain the good mechanical properties of the bulk material. Having analyzed the ways of realizing the bio-functionalization, this article briefly summarized the bio-functionalization concepts of six hot spots in this field. They are bioactivity, bony tissue inducing, anti-microbial, anti-tumor, anticoagulation, and drug loading functions.

Self-assembled Biodegradable Nanoparticles and Polysaccharides as Biomimetic ECM Nanostructures for the Synergistic effect of RGD and BMP-2 on Bone Formation

Producing biomimetic extracellular matrix (ECM) is an effective approach to improve biocompatibility of medical devices. In this study, biomimetic ECM nanostructures are constructed through layer-by-layer self-assembling positively charged chitosan (Chi), negatively charged oxidized sodium alginate (OAlg), and positively charged bovine serum albumin (BSA)-based nanoparticles. The BSA-based nanoparticles in the self-assembled films not only result in porous nanostructures similar to natural ECM, but also preserve the activity and realize the sustained release of Bone morphogenetic protein-2 (BMP-2). The results of bone marrow stem cells (BMSCs) culture demonstrate that the penta-peptide glycine-arginine-glycine-aspartate-serine (GRGDS) grafted Chi/OAlg films favor cell adhesion and proliferation. GRGDS and BMP-2 in biomimetic ECM nanostructures synergistically promote BMSC functions and new bone formation. The RGD and BMP incorporated biomimetic ECM coatings could be applied on a variety of biomedical devices to improve the bioactivity and biocompatibility.

Silk fibroin nanoparticles support in vitro sustained antibiotic release and osteogenesis on titanium surface

Increasing amounts of metal-based implants are used for orthopedic or dental surgeries throughout the world. Still several implant-related problems such as inflammation, loosening and bacterial infection are prevalent. These problems stem from the immediate microbial contamination and failure of initial osteoblast adhesion. Additionally, bacterial infections can cause serious and life-threatening conditions such as osteomyelitis. Here, antibiotic (gentamicin)-loaded silk protein fibroin (non-mulberry silkworm, Antheraea mylitta) nanoparticles are fabricated and deposited over the titanium surface to achieve sustained drug release in vitro and to alter the surface nano-roughness. Based on the altered surface topography, chemistry and antibacterial activity, we conclude that the nanoparticle-deposited surfaces are superior for osteoblast adhesion, proliferation and differentiation in comparison to bare Ti. This method can be utilized as a cost-effective approach in implant modification.

Titanium-based implants are commonly used in the field of orthopedics or dentistry. Surface modification of an implant is vital to ensure osseointegration. In this article, the author investigated the use of silk protein fibroins for metal surface modification and also for drug delivery against bacteria. The encouraging data should provide a new method in terms of nanotechnology in the respective clinical fields.

Mussel-Inspired Protein Nanoparticles Containing Iron(III)-DOPA Complexes for pH-Responsive Drug Delivery

A novel bioinspired strategy for protein nanoparticle (NP) synthesis to achieve pH-responsive drug release exploits the pH-dependent changes in the coordination stoichiometry of iron(III)-3,4-dihydroxyphenylalanine (DOPA) complexes, which play a major cross-linking role in mussel byssal threads. Doxorubicin-loaded polymeric NPs that are based on Fe(III)-DOPA complexation were thus synthesized with a DOPA-modified recombinant mussel adhesive protein through a co-electrospraying process. The release of doxorubicin was found to be predominantly governed by a change in the structure of the Fe(III)-DOPA complexes induced by an acidic pH value. It was also demonstrated that the fabricated NPs exhibited effective cytotoxicity towards cancer cells through efficient cellular uptake and cytosolic release. Therefore, it is anticipated that Fe(III)-DOPA complexation can be successfully utilized as a new design principle for pH-responsive NPs for diverse controlled drug-delivery applications.

Post-synthetic Ti exchanged UiO-66 metal-organic frameworks that deliver exceptional gas permeability in mixed matrix membranes

Gas separation membranes are one of the lowest energy technologies available for the separation of carbon dioxide from flue gas. Key to handling the immense scale of this separation is maximised membrane permeability at sufficient selectivity for CO2 over N2. For the first time it is revealed that metals can be post-synthetically exchanged in MOFs to drastically enhance gas transport performance in membranes. Ti-exchanged UiO-66 MOFs have been found to triple the gas permeability without a loss in selectivity due to several effects that include increased affinity for CO2 and stronger interactions between the polymer matrix and the Ti-MOFs. As a result, it is also shown that MOFs optimized in previous works for batch-wise adsorption applications can be applied to membranes, which have lower demands on material quantities. These membranes exhibit exceptional CO2 permeability enhancement of as much as 153% when compared to the non-exchanged UiO-66 mixed-matrix controls, which places them well above the Robeson upper bound at just a 5 wt.% loading. The fact that maximum permeability enhancement occurs at such low loadings, significantly less than the optimum for other MMMs, is a major advantage in large-scale application due to the more attainable quantities of MOF needed.

Multifunctional mesoporous bioactive glasses for effective delivery of therapeutic ions and drug/growth factors

Regeneration of large-size bone defects represents a significant challenge clinically, which requires the use of scaffolds with multifunction, such as anti-bacterial activity, and stimulation of osteogenesis and angiogenesis. It is known that functional ions or drug/growth factors play an important role to stimulate tissue regeneration. Mesoporous bioactive glasses (MBG) possess excellent bioactivity and drug-delivery ability as well as effective ionic release in the body fluids microenvironment due to its specific mesoporous structure and large surface area. For these reasons, functional ions (e.g. lithium (Li), strontium (Sr), Copper (Cu) and Boron (B)) and drug/growth factors (e.g. dexamethasone, vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and bone morphogenetic protein (BMP)) have been incorporated into MBG, which shows high loading efficiency and effective release. The release of therapeutic ions and drug/growth factors from MBG offers it multifunctional properties, such as improved osteogenesis, angiogenesis, anti-bacterial/cancer activity. However, there is no a systematic review about delivery of therapeutic ions and drugs/growth factors from MBG for the functional effect on the tissue regeneration despite that significant progress has been achieved in the past five years. Therefore, in this review, we mainly focused on the new advances for the functional effect of delivering therapeutic ions and drugs/growth factors on the ostegeogenesis, angiogenesis and antibacterial activity. It is expected that the review will offer new concept to develop multifunctional biomaterials for bone regeneration by the synergistic effect of therapeutic ions and drug/growth factors.

Immobilizing hydroxycholesterol with apatite on titanium surfaces to induce ossification

BACKGROUND

Immobilizing bioactive molecules and osteoconductive apatite on titanium implants have investigated direct ossification. In this study, hydroxycholesterol (HC) was immobilized with apatite on titanium through simply adsorption or sandwich-like coating. Three kinds of hydroxycholesterol were chosen to induce ossification: 20α-hydroxycholesterol (20α- HC), 22(S)-hydroxycholesterol (22(S)-HC) and 25-hydroxycholesterol (25-HC).The effects of HC/apatite coating on ossification abilities were evaluated in vitro and in vivo.

RESULTS

At 6 d, adsorbed apatite/25-HC and apatite/22(S)-HC coating exhibited some cytotoxicity, while the cell viability of apatite/20α-HC coating was similar as apatite coating. Immobilizing HC with apatite significantly enhanced the ALP activities compared with apatite coating. There was no significant difference in ALP value between adsorbed apatite/HC coating and sandwich-like apatite/HC/apatite coating. When compared with apatite coating, the mineral deposition improved by adsorbed HC with apatite at higher concentration in vivo.

CONCLUSIONS

When compared with apatite coating, immobilizing HC with apatite coating induced the ossification in vitro and in vivo.
