Abstract
Previous studies disclosed that a high thyroid stimulating hormone level is an independent risk factor for diabetes peripheral neuropathy (DPN) in subclinical hypothyroidism (SCH) patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). However, whether thyroid metabolism has an effect on DPN in euthyroid T2DM patients remains unknown. The aim of this study was to identify the association between thyroid function and DPN in euthyroid T2DM patients. A set of 580 euthyroid T2DM patients was enrolled in the current study and stratified into DPN and Non-DPN groups. Mann-Whitney U test was performed to analyze the continuous variables of biochemical and thyroid metabolism indicators, and the Chi-square test was used to compare the categorical variables. Spearman correlation analysis was performed to analyze the relationship between clinical indicators and free thyroxine (FT4). By using the logistic regression analysis, the prevalence of DPN in different thyroid function indicators were evaluated. T2DM patients with DPN had obviously lower levels of aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alpha-hydroxybutyric dehydrogenase (α-HBDH), superoxide dismutase (SOD), calcium (Ca), creatinine (Cr), uric acid (UA), retinol binding protein (RBP), total protein (TP), albumin (ALB), alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and FT4 than the T2DM patients without DPN (P < 0.05). FT4 was associated with TP, prealbumin (PA), ALB, SOD, anion gap (AG), Ca, chlorine (Cl), UA, RBP, apoprotein A (Apo A), apoprotein B (Apo B), apoprotein E (Apo E), and total cholesterol (TC). According to the FT4 quartile, participants were sequentially divided into four groups to compare the prevalence of DPN between each group. The data suggested that the prevalence of DPN in these four groups was 53.79%, 53.28%, 54.97%, 38.10%, respectively. Moreover, compared with quartile 4, patients in quartile 1, 2, 3 all had a significantly higher risk of DPN (P = 0.007, P = 0.011, P = 0.004). The level of FT4 was negatively correlated with the prevalence of DPN in euthyroid T2DM patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND To evaluate the endocrine hormone and metabolic indices in postmenopausal women with euthyroid and mild subclinical hypothyroidism after menopause hormone therapy (MHT). METHODS A retrospective study of 587 postmenopausal women receiving MHT was conducted. Median (25-75th percentile) age was 52 (49-54) years. According to thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) levels at initial diagnosis, the patients were divided into three groups: I (euthyroid with low normal TSH range, n = 460), II (euthyroid with upper normal TSH range, n = 106) and III (mild subclinical hypothyroidism, n = 21). After a continuous oral MHT regimen using the same estradiol potency for 6-18 month cycles, serum endocrine hormone and metabolic indices were reassessed. RESULTS Compared with baseline, serum TSH levels in groups I and II significantly changed but all values were within the normal range. No significant difference was observed in serum TSH levels in group III. After treatment, all serum free tri-iodothyronine and free thyroxine levels were within the normal range. Serum total cholesterol, triglyceride, fasting plasma glucose, fasting insulin levels and homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance index had significantly decreased in group I. There were no significant differences in all observed lipid and glucose parameters in group III, before and after treatment. CONCLUSION MHT did not affect thyroid function in postmenopausal women with euthyroid and mild subclinical hypothyroidism. MHT led to an improvement in lipid and glucose indicators in euthyroid women with low normal TSH range.

Abstract
This study aimed to investigate the effects of a marine exercise retreat program on thyroid-related hormone levels. A total of 62 middle-aged euthyroid women participated in a 6-day marine exercise retreat program. Using thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) and free thyroxine (fT4) hormone levels, the participants were divided into high and low-hormone-level groups. Despite decreased TSH and fT4 levels after the program, the factors influencing changes in each group were different. TSH levels were influenced by changes in the normalized low frequency (nLF) of heart rate variability and carbon monoxide (CO) from all the participants, and changes in body fat percentage, nLF, and nitrogen dioxide (NO2) exposure level in the high TSH group. fT4 levels were influenced by changes in body mass index (BMI), NO2 exposure, and particulate matter diameter of 10 µm or less (PM10) exposure in all participants. Changes in BMI and CO exposure influenced the low fT4 group. Lastly, changes in the exercise stress test affected the high fT4 group. Thus, the marine exercise retreat program affected euthyroid thyroid-related hormone levels, and influencing factors differ depending on the initial value of the hormone.

Economic and Cardiometabolic Risk Factors Are Predictors of Lower Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH) Levels in Hispanic/Latinx Adults with Euthyroidism-A Community-Based Study. Abstract
Thyroid hormone abnormalities are among the most common endocrine disorders comorbidly suffered alongside metabolic syndrome and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), and within the euthyroid range they may also impact other outcomes, such as mood disorders. This study aimed to observationally examine the relationship between TSH and social determinants of health and clinical measures in a euthyroid Hispanic/Latinx patient sample with a diagnosis of anxiety and/or depression disorders from a community health clinic. A needs assessment was completed using a random sample of 100 de-identified medical records of individuals who received free medical care, including mental health, at a community-based clinic. Those with low normal TSH (<2 mIU/L) compared with high normal TSH (≥2 mIU/L) had a greater odds of food insecurity (p = 0.016) and being at 100% of the federal poverty level (p = 0.015). The low normal TSH group had significantly higher fasting glucose (p = 0.046), hemoglobin A1c (p = 0.018), and total cholesterol (p = 0.034) compared with the high normal TSH group. In those with T2DM, individuals with low normal TSH had six-times greater odds of having high fasting glucose (p = 0.022) and high hemoglobin A1c (p = 0.029). These relationships warrant further study, to inform future public health policies and follow-up care for underserved and vulnerable communities.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) is common in clinical setting, the relationship between thyroid hormone levels and glucose and lipid metabolism in patients with T1DM remains unclear. We attempted to analyze the correlation of thyroid hormone levels and blood glucose and lipid metabolism in children with normal thyroid function. METHODS Children with T1DM were selected, and 85 healthy children who underwent physical examinations in our hospital as control group. The characteristics and laboratory testing results were compared, the correlation of thyroid hormone levels with blood glucose and blood lipids was analyzed by Pearson correlation analysis. RESULTS A total of 167 participants were included. the low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (LDL-C), triglyceride (TG), fasting blood glucose (FBG), and glycated hemoglobin (HbAlc) in T1DM patients were higher than those in healthy controls, while the high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (HDL-C), thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) and free triiodothyronine (FT3) in T1DM patients were lower than that of healthy children (all P<0.05). TSH was positively correlated with LDL-C (r=0.169, P=0.032), TC (r=0.182, P=0.017) and TG (r=0.197, P=0.008), negatively correlated with FBG (r=-0.196, P=0.023) and HbAlc (r=-0.328, P=0.002). FT3 was negatively correlated with TG (r=-0.182, P=0.011), FBG (r=-0.184, P=0.009) and HbAlc (r=-0.223, P=0.005). TG in the high TSH group and the middle TSH group is higher than that of low TSH group. However, FBG and HbAlc were lower than those in the low TSH group (all P<0.05). Compared with the low FT3 group, the TG, FBG and HbAlc decreased in the high and middle FT3 group (all P<0.05). CONCLUSIONS The serum TSH are closely associated with FT3 and glycolipid metabolism in children with T1DM, which may be the useful indicators to assess the severity of T1DM in clinical settings to provide insights into the management of T1DM.

Abstract
Metabolic syndrome (MetS) and thyroid dysfunction are common in clinical practice. The objectives of this review are to discuss some proposed mechanisms by which thyroid dysfunctions may lead to MetS, to describe the bidirectional relationship between thyroid hormones (THs) and adiposity and finally, to resume a list of recent studies in humans that evaluated possible associations between thyroid hormone status and MetS or its clinical components. Not solely THs, but also its metabolites regulate metabolic rate, influencing adiposity. The mechanisms enrolled are related to its direct effect on adenosine triphosphate (ATP) utilization, uncoupling synthesis of ATP, mitochondrial biogenesis, and its inotropic and chronotropic effects. THs also act controlling core body temperature, appetite, and sympathetic activity. In a bidirectional way, thyroid function is affected by adiposity. Leptin is one of the hallmarks, but the pro-inflammatory cytokines and also insulin resistance impact thyroid function and perhaps its structure. MetS development and weight gain have been positively associated with thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) in several studies. Adverse glucose metabolism may be related to hyperthyroidism, but also to reduction of thyroid function or higher serum TSH, as do abnormal serum triglyceride levels. Hypo- and hyperthyroidism have been related to higher blood pressure (BP), that may be consequence of genomic or nongenomic action of THs on the vasculature and in the heart. In summary, the interaction between THs and components of MetS is complex and not fully understood. More longitudinal studies controlling each of all confounding variables that interact with endpoints or exposure factors are still necessary.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Subclinical hypothyroidism is associated with increased blood lipid levels. However, the exact role of thyrotropin (TSH) alone is not clear. In order to clarify this point, we analysed the acute effect of recombinant human TSH (rhTSH) administration on lipid levels. METHODS Sera of 27 premenopausal women with well-differentiated thyroid cancer were analysed. Patients that underwent a total thyroidectomy, ablation with 131I (Iodine 131) and rhTSH administration as a part of routine follow-up American Thyroid Association guidelines were included. The protocol consists of 2 intramuscular injections of 0.9 mg of rhTSH, performed on day 1 day and day 2, with blood collection on day 1 (before rhTSH administration), and day 5. TSH, free thyroxine, total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDLc), high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDLc), and triglycerides were assessed in all the samples, before and four days after the first administration of rhTSH. RESULTS Total cholesterol and triglycerides significantly increased after stimulation of rhTSH (respectively, 192 ± 33 vs. 207 ± 26, p = 0.036 and 72 ± 23 vs. 85 ± 23, p = 0.016). LDLc and HDLc showed comparable concentrations before and after the test (respectively, 115 ± 27 vs. 126 ± 22, p = 0.066, and 62 ± 15 vs. 64 ± 15, p = 0.339), while non-HDLc increased after stimulation (130 ± 30 vs. 143 ± 25, p = 0.045). CONCLUSION TSH has a direct effect on total cholesterol, triglycerides, and nonHDLc. Explanation of these phenomena will require additional studies.

Abstract
The association between normal thyroid function and diabetic kidney disease (DKD) has gained increasing attention. The present study evaluated the relationship between normal thyroid hormone levels and DKD in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) patients. A total of 862 type 2 diabetes patients were enrolled in this cross-sectional study in Xi’an, Shaanxi Province, China. The subjects were evaluated for anthropometric measurements, thyroid function and DKD. Of 862 patients, 246 (28.5%) suffered from DKD, and the prevalence of DKD did not differ between men and women. The prevalence of DKD showed a significantly decreasing trend across the quartiles based on free triiodothyronine (FT3) levels (41.1%, 30.6%, 23.8%, and 18.9%, P < 0.001). In comparison with all participants categorized in the first FT3 quartile group (FT3-Q1) (<4.380), the adjusted odds ratio of DKD in the second FT3 quartile group (FT3-Q2), the third FT3 quartile group (FT3-Q3), and the fourth FT3 quartile group (FT3-Q4) were 0.655(95%CI: 0.406–1.057), 0.493(95%CI: 0.299–0.813), 0.406(0.237–0.697) (P < 0.05). Also, similar results were observed in men. Conversely, none of the FT3 groups was associated with DKD in women. The present study showed that FT3 within normal range was negatively correlated with DKD in T2DM patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The relationship between thyroid function and lipid profile has been documented in T2DM and healthy subjects. The aim of the current study was to assess the association between thyroid hormone parameters and dyslipidemia in T2DM and non-diabetic study participants. METHOD AND MATERIALS In this comparative cross-sectional study, 214 type 2 diabetic and 214 non-diabetic study participants were enrolled. Clinical and anthropometric data were collected from all study participants. After overnight fasting, 10ml of whole blood samples were drawn for the measurement of serum TSH, free thyroxine (fT4), free triiodothyronine (fT3), serum reactive C-protein levels, as well as for lipid profile test and glucose. RESULT The burden of hypothyroidism and subclinical hypothyroidism among T2DM study participants were 73 (17.05%) and 13 (3.04%) respectively. Comparatively, T2DM study participants had significantly higher serum lipid level than non-diabetics. Stratified by TSH, hypothyroid T2DM study participants had increased lipid level than euthyroid subjects. T2DM serum TSH have shown a positive significant correlation with all lipid profile parameters except HDL-C. In the final model (multivariate linear regression), diabetics serum TSH significantly and positively associated with TG and BMI. Diabetic serum fT3 and fT4 negatively associated with body mass index. In addition, diabetics serum fT3 negatively and serum fT4 positively associated with TC and HDL-C respectively. CONCLUSION T2DM study subjects had significantly higher lipid level than nondiabetic and We identified that TSH was positively associated with serum TG and BMI among T2DM study participants.

Abstract
Background. Studies have suggested that hypothyroidism is more frequent in the elderly with diabetes mellitus. However, an adaptation of TSH levels to age should be considered in this assessment. Some antidiabetes drugs reportedly interfere with TSH levels. The objectives of this study were to evaluate the prevalence of undiagnosed hypothyroidism in patients with diabetes and the influence of antidiabetes drugs. Material and Methods. 1160 subjects, 60 years and older (751 with diabetes), were studied; results were compared according to diabetes treatment and with persons without diabetes. TSH, FT4, antithyroperoxidase, fasting glucose, and HbA1c were measured. Results and Discussion. 6.4% of patients with diabetes had hypothyroidism, a higher prevalence compared with persons without diabetes (5.1%), but lower than observed in many studies. The use of age-specific TSH reference interval (RI) could explain this difference. Patients taking metformin (MTF) had TSH (showed in medians) slightly lower (2.8 mU/L) than those not on MTF (3.3 mU/L), p < 0.05. MTF doses influenced TSH levels. Conclusions. The use of specific TSH RI could avoid the misdiagnosis of hypothyroidism in elderly with diabetes. Patients in use of MTF as single drug had lower TSH than those using other medications and persons without diabetes.
