Abstract
OBJECTIVE Previous studies focused on the benefits of adequate prosthodontic treatment, while few studies have investigated the prosthodontic-related risks to health. As a modifiable oral health indicator, the association of ill-fitting prosthesis (IFP) with hypertension has not been fully explored. METHODS This cross-sectional study involved 158,659 adults in Beijing (2009-2017) receiving intra-oral examinations and blood pressure measurements. Logistic regression models were applied to assess the association of IFP with the prevalence of hypertension, systolic blood pressure (SBP) ≧ 140 mmHg and diastolic blood pressure (DBP) ≧ 90 mmHg, as well as subgroup analyses by different fixed IFP subgroups (according to involved teeth number) and removable IFP subgroup. We further investigated effect modifications among stratified populations. RESULTS 158,659 individuals were included for analysis, 346 (26.86%) in IFP group and 27,380 (17.40%) in non-IFP group (p < 0.001) were hypertensive. After adjustment of sex, age, obesity, dyslipidaemia, diabetes, hsCRP, family history of CVD, self-reported smoking, self-reported drinking and WC, ORs of hypertension, SBP ≧ 140 mmHg and DBP ≧ 90 mmHg were 1.330 (95% CI: 1.162-1.522), 1.277 (95% CI: 1.098-1.486) and 1.376 (95% CI: 1.186-1.596), respectively (p < 0.05). Furthermore, after full adjustment, the number of involved teeth showed a significant incremental trend with hypertension risk in the population with and without IFP (p for trend <0.001). The IFP-blood pressure associations were more pronounced in females, 18-60 years, non-obese and diabetic participants. CONCLUSION As a modifiable oral indicator, IFP was significantly associated with a higher risk of hypertension.

Abstract
Masticatory function is associated with a variety of health outcomes. The aim of this systematic review is to clarify the predictive value of masticatory function for adverse health outcomes, such as frailty, sarcopenia and malnutrition, in older adults. An online literature search covered articles published in English or Dutch in three databases (PubMed, Embase and CINAHL, last searched November 4th 2022). Inclusion criteria were: an observational study design, focus on adults aged ≥65 years and evaluation of the association between masticatory function and health outcomes. Reviews and articles published before the year 2000 were excluded. Methodological quality and risk of bias were assessed using the Quality Assessment Tool for Observational Cohort and Cross-Sectional Studies of the U.S. National Institutes of Health. Study population demographics, methods for assessing masticatory function, and the association between masticatory function and adverse health outcomes were extracted. From the 34 included studies, 5 studies had a prospective design, 2 had a retrospective design, and the other 27 studies had cross-sectional design. The majority of the studies were conducted in Japan (74%, n = 26). Twenty studies (59%) used one indicator for masticatory function, the other 41% used two (n = 9) or more (n = 5) indicators. Masticatory function was most frequently assessed with the maximum occlusal force (MOF) (79%, n = 27). The identified health outcomes were clustered into 6 categories: physical parameters and sarcopenia, history of falling, nutritional status, frailty, cognitive function and mortality. Despite the complex and multidimensional character of both masticatory function and most identified adverse health outcomes, some significant associations were reported. Prospective studies showed that reduced masticatory function in older adults is associated with incidence of frailty and frailty progression, cognitive decline and all-cause mortality. Regarding the other identified adverse health outcomes, i.e., physical measures and sarcopenia, history of falling and nutritional status, only cross-sectional studies were available and results were less concordant. As all prospective studies showed that reduced masticatory function in older adults is associated with adverse health outcomes, prevention of decline of masticatory function by adequate oral care may contribute to healthy ageing.

Abstract
Background/purpose Oral health is related to general health and a person's overall well-being. The aim of the present study was to explore the association between oral health status and bite force among young adults. Materials and methods Maximum bite force (MBF) was measured using Dental Prescale II in conjunction with a pressure-sensitive film and bite force analyzer in 40 young adults aged 20 to 40. Supragingival dental plaque was collected and cultured. Plaque weight, pH, and colony counts were assessed. The decayed, missing, and filled teeth index (DMFT) and body mass index (BMI) were recorded. Results Bite force was negatively correlated with the number of missing teeth and the sum of missing and filled teeth. When the filled-to-remaining-teeth ratio (F/R ratio) was less than 8%, the bite force was significantly higher compared to an F/R ratio of 8-25%. Additionally, the amount of total bacteria was positively correlated with total bite force, and the quantity of Streptococcus mutans (S. mutans) along with total bacteria was positively correlated with bite force in the molar region (∗P < 0.05). The molar region predominantly contributed to bite force. Conclusion Elevated levels of cariogenic bacteria may increase the risk of tooth loss, subsequently leading to reduced bite force. This reduction in bite force can further impact the efficiency of chewing function and, consequently, the quality of life. An F/R ratio above 8% could be easily calculated clinically and could serve as a guide to identify patients, particularly young adults, at risk of reduced bite force.

Abstract
STATEMENT OF PROBLEM The consequences of edentulism depend on its complexity and are far-reaching, but limited evidence regarding its association with neurologic health is available. PURPOSE The purpose of this systematic review was to establish the relationship between oral prosthetic rehabilitation and the regional increase in brain activity. MATERIAL AND METHODS This systematic review was registered in the International Prospective Register of Systematic Reviews (CRD42021262247), and the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyses (PRISMA) guideline was followed. Randomized clinical trials, prospective studies comparing the brain activity of patients rehabilitated with and without the use of dental prostheses, and studies that analyzed the human brain by using noninvasive techniques were used as inclusion criteria. The risk of bias in each study was assessed by using the Risk Of Bias In Non-randomized Studies-of Interventions (ROBINS-I). RESULTS The search was carried out in the PubMed/MEDLINE, Embase, Cochrane Library, and https://clinicaltrials.gov databases up to June 2021. After a search conducted by 2 reviewers, 8 articles were included in the review. A regional increase in blood flow and regional cerebral activity during dental prosthesis use was identified in the studies. CONCLUSIONS A positive association was found between the different types of prosthetic rehabilitation and brain function. Prostheses may preserve and restore neurological health.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The relationship between social isolation, loneliness, and tooth loss and cognition in older people is poorly understood. We examine how social isolation and cognitive performance are associated prospectively among older adults, as well as how tooth loss and loneliness are related to this association. METHODS Using data from 26,168 participants aged ≥50 from the Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe (SHARE), we explored the association between social isolation, loneliness, tooth loss and cognition. We used bootstrapping with resampling strategies for testing a moderated mediating model. RESULTS Higher social isolation was associated with poorer cognitive performance (B = -0.20, 95% CI = -0.03, -0.01; R2 =0.60), an association mediated by the respondent's number of missing teeth (B = -0.001, 95% CI = -0.002, -0.001). Higher levels of social isolation were associated with a greater number of missing teeth, and a higher number of missing teeth was linked with poorer cognition. We also found that loneliness moderated the relationship between social isolation and both the number of missing teeth (B = -0.11, p = 0.047) and cognitive performance. CONCLUSION In later life, social isolation and loneliness are associated with shoddy oral health and poor cognitive status. Clinicians and policymakers should be aware of both the association between social isolation and feelings of loneliness on dentition and oral health and their relationship to the cognitive status of older adults.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the occurrence of mild cognitive impairment in edentulous patients up to 3 years after they received single-implant overdentures (1-IODs). METHODS This was a follow-up study for a crossover randomized controlled trial comparing 1-IODs and conventional complete dentures, with patient satisfaction as the primary outcome. In the present study, the cognitive function of the patients, measured with the Japanese version of the Montreal cognitive assessment (MoCA-J), was evaluated as the secondary outcome at baseline and 2 months, 1 year, 2 years, and 3 years after 1-IOD placement. The total and domain (memory, executive function, visuospatial skills, language, attention, and orientation) MoCA-J scores of the patients at each timepoint were analyzed and compared. RESULTS Twenty-two patients with edentulous mandibles received 1-IODs. Within-group comparisons revealed that the total MoCA-J scores at 1 year and 3 years after 1-IOD placement were significantly increased compared with baseline scores. Additionally, the memory domain scores at all timepoint were significantly increased compared with the baseline scores, and the executive function domain scores at the 2-month, 2-year and 3-year timepoint were significantly increased compared with the baseline scores. CONCLUSION Patients with edentulous mandibles who underwent 1-IOD placement showed significantly improved total scores of MoCA-J after 1 year and 3 years of wearing 1-IODs. In addition, they showed significantly improved memory domain scores at 2 months, 1 year, 2 years, and 3 years after 1-IOD placement and executive function domain scores at 2 months, 2 years, and 3 years after 1-IOD placement. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE The results of this study suggest that 1-IOD treatment for older adults, especially those with edentulous mandibles, may prevent cognitive decline regardless of the condition of the maxilla.

Abstract
AIM The aim is to evaluate the impact of denture prostheses on cognitive functioning in completely edentulous patients using a novel cognitive assessment tool. METHODS Thirty (n=30) completely edentulous patients of age groups above 60 years were taken in the present study group. Pre- and post-cognitive assessments were done on the patients using a novel cognitive assessment tool, Dental Cognitive Functioning Assessment Tool (DCFAT). These assessments were done in the pre-treatment stage and after two weeks and three months of prostheses function. RESULTS The mean DCFAT score of 30 patients shows 10.13 recorded prior to denture fabrication and 11.5 and 14 after two weeks and three months of prosthesis function, respectively. A mean difference in the DCFAT score of 1.37 was seen between the pre-denture fabrication stage and two weeks of prosthesis function. The mean difference in DCFAT score of 3.87 was seen between the pre-denture fabrication stage and three months of prosthesis function and the mean difference score of DCFAT score 2.5 was observed after two weeks and three months of prosthesis function. One-way ANOVA was used to investigate the statistical difference between bivariate samples followed by the post hoc Tukey test. The results were statistically significant p < 0.00001. CONCLUSION The inference obtained suggest that the replacement of missing teeth by denture prostheses enhances the cognitive functioning in the elderly population which can eventually reduce the occurrence of dementia.

Abstract
Mild cognitive impairment (MCI), including memory loss, has been attracting attention in Japan. This study assessed the effect of new complete dentures provision alone and with dietary intervention on cognitive functions assessed using the Japanese version of the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA-J). A randomized controlled trial was conducted with 70 older adults who required new complete dentures. The participants had new complete dentures fabricated and were randomly classified into the intervention or control group. The intervention group received simple dietary advice, and the control group only received denture care advice. Cognitive function was assessed using the MoCA-J before and at 3 and 6 months after treatment. The between-group comparison and within-group comparison were analyzed. No significant differences were reported for comparisons between the intervention and control groups. A significant increase was revealed in the within-group comparisons for the total scores between the 3- and 6-month assessments (p = 0.002) and between the baseline and 6-month assessments (p = 0.012) in the intervention group. In the control group, a significant increase in the total scores was not revealed between any of evaluation period. Complete denture replacement combined with simple dietary intervention may help improve MoCA-J scores in edentulous older adults.

Abstract
STATEMENT OF PROBLEM Different criteria have been developed and used for the clinician evaluation of removable complete denture (CD) quality. However, the optimal criteria under a specific clinical or research purpose are unclear. PURPOSE The purpose of this systematic review was to identify the development and clinical parameters of criteria for the clinician evaluation of CD quality and to evaluate the measurement properties of each criterion. MATERIAL AND METHODS An electronic search was conducted through PubMed, Scopus, and Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews from database inception to April 2022. A hand search was conducted based on the references in the included studies. The measurement properties of the included CD quality criteria were assessed based on the consensus-based standards for the selection of health measurement instruments (COSMIN) checklist and a previous study. The articles that supported the measurement properties of the original CD quality criteria were also included. RESULTS Of the 282 abstracts reviewed, 22 clinical studies were included; 17 original articles that developed a new CD quality criterion and 5 articles that additionally supported measurement properties of the original criterion. There were 18 CD quality criteria with 2 to 11 clinical parameters in each criterion, predominantly denture retention and stability, followed by denture occlusion and articulation, and vertical dimension. Sixteen criteria possessed criterion validity shown by its associations with patient performance or patient-reported outcomes. Responsiveness was reported when a CD quality change was detected after delivery of a new CD, denture adhesive use, or during postinsertion follow-up. CONCLUSIONS Eighteen criteria have been developed for clinician evaluation of CD quality with various clinical parameters, predominantly retention and stability. None of the included criteria met all measurement properties in the 6 assessed domains, but more than half of them had relatively high-quality assessment scores.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This study set out to examine both the longitudinal association between tooth status and cognitive performance among older adults in Europe, and the mediating effects of loneliness and quality of life on this association. METHODS We conducted a prospective analysis using data from 38,614 participants aged 50 or older, taken from the Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe (SHARE) of 2013 (baseline) and 2015 (follow up). Bootstrapping with resampling strategies was used for testing a multiple mediator model. RESULTS The average age of participants was 66.9 (SD = 9.4). About 23% of the participants had full sets of their own teeth and 38.2% had missing teeth fully replaced by dental implants or dentures. Participants who had partially replaced teeth (B = 0.038, p < 0.001), and with fully replaced teeth (B = 0.041, p < 0.001), or had all their teeth in place (B = 0.055, p < 0.001), had better cognitive performance compared to those who did not replace their missing teeth. It was also found that quality of life and loneliness partially mediated these relationships - Having all teeth in place or replacing all or partially missing teeth was found to affect cognitive performance also via improved quality of life and through lower loneliness. CONCLUSION In later life, poor tooth status can be directly associated with cognitive decline and indirectly linked to cognitive performance, in light of decreasing quality of life and increasing loneliness. Clinicians should be aware of both the impact of poor tooth status on cognitive status and the implications for the wellbeing of older adults.

Abstract
PURPOSE This study aims to evaluate the effect of rehabilitation with complete dentures versus implant-retained overdenture on activity in various parts of the brain cognition in a geriatric edentulous population via Functional MRI (fMRI) studies and the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE). METHODS Ten completely edentulous patients were rehabilitated with both complete dentures and two-implant retained overdentures for three months each. fMRI studies were performed for each modality during chewing and recall tasks at three time periods: T0: Completely Edentulous(CE) T1: after three months of wearing Conventional Complete Dentures(CD) and T2: after three months of wearing Implant-retained Overdentures (IOD). The Z scores obtained from the fMRI at these phases of examination were tabulated and correlated with MMSE scores obtained at the corresponding time periods. RESULTS Z scores obtained during the memory recall tasks at T2 were the greatest (Prefrontal Cortex (p=0.059) and Hippocampus (p=0.036). The MMSE scores obtained were significantly higher for the IODs when compared to the CDs and Baseline values (p < 0.05)Conclusion: IODs may potentially result in superior sensory feedback in edentulous patients and lead to improved cognitive performance when compared to conventional complete dentures.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To quantify the dose-response associations between tooth loss and risk of cognitive impairment and dementia. DESIGN Longitudinal studies that examined the association between tooth loss and cognitive function were systematically searched on 6 databases through March 1, 2020. The study adhered to Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) reporting guidelines. Risk estimates were pooled using random-effects models. The dose-response associations were assessed using generalized least squares spline models. SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS Adults from community, institution, outpatient or in-hospital were included in the meta-analysis. MEASURES Cognitive impairment and dementia were defined by neuropsychological tests, diagnostic criteria, or medical records. Tooth loss was self-reported or assessed by clinical examinations. RESULTS Fourteen studies were entered into the meta-analysis, including 34,074 participants and 4689 cases with diminished cognitive function. Participants with more tooth loss had a 1.48 times higher risk of developing cognitive impairment [95% confidence interval (CI) 1.18-1.87] and 1.28 times higher risk of being diagnosed with dementia (95% CI 1.09-1.49); however, the association was nonsignificant for participants using dentures (relative risk = 1.10, 95% CI 0.90-1.11). Eight studies were included in the dose-response analysis, and data supported the use of linear models. Each additional tooth loss was associated with a 0.014 increased relative risk of cognitive impairment and 0.011 elevated relative risks of dementia. Edentulous participants faced a 1.54 times higher risk of cognitive impairment and a 1.40 times higher risk of being diagnosed with dementia. CONCLUSIONS AND IMPLICATIONS Moderate-quality evidence suggested tooth loss was independently associated with cognitive impairment and dementia; risk of diminished cognitive function increased with incremental numbers of teeth lost. Furthermore, timely prosthodontic treatment with dentures may reduce the progression of cognitive decline related to tooth loss.

Abstract
Aim The aim of the systematic review was to assess the influence of dental prostheses on cognitive functioning in elderly population. Materials and Methods This systematic review was conducted according to the PRISMA guidelines. The initial electronic search was conducted using the following search databases: MEDLINE (PubMed), Cochrane Library, Google Scholar, and EMBASE. The search was limited to English language using the search items/keywords: "dental prostheses and cognitive functioning," "dental prostheses and brain function," "Tooth loss and cognitive loss," "mastication and prefrontal activity," and "prostheses on mental state." The search strategy was followed using the PICOS framework. Results A total of 19 studies were selected according to the selection criteria. Out of 19 studies, 15 studies were included and 4 studies were excluded from the review. Conclusion With the available evidence in the literature, it can be concluded that dental prostheses have a very significant role in preventing the cognitive impairment and act as a protective factor in enhancing the cognitive function in patients with dementia-related diseases and neurodegenerative diseases.

Abstract
Aim: The aim of the study was to evaluate the effect of dentist's communication skills and patient's psychological factors in predicting denture satisfaction and quality of life. Settings and Design: Cohort study. Materials and Methods: Patient-related variables were obtained using questionnaires in both pre- and post-intervention phases. In addition to this, in preintervention phase, lacunae in doctor–patient communication were obtained. Based on this, the postgraduates were trained in relevant communication skills required during complete denture treatment. In postintervention phase, the postgraduates were again followed up for continuation or decay of skills. Statistical Analysis: Mixed-mode approach - quantitative and qualitative analysis. Results: Both groups were similar in psychological parameters, personality domains, denture quality and quality of life at baseline. However, there was significant difference in denture satisfaction (P < 0.001) in both the groups. In the experimental group, denture satisfaction was more (80.4%) and quality of life had improved from baseline to 3 months (P = 0.000). Denture satisfaction was associated with self-efficacy (P = 0.002) and the communication skills of the dentist (P = 0.000). Quality of life was associated with the conscientiousness domain of personality (P = 0.049) and the communication skills of the dentist (P < 0.05). Conclusion: Satisfaction and quality of life with dentures were associated with self-efficacy, conscientiousness domain and the communication skills of the dentist. Denture satisfaction can be predicted by dentist communication skills. Therefore, training in communication skills for complete denture patient management and assessment of the psychological profile of the patient could contribute to the effective patient-centered practice to avoid patient dissatisfaction.

Abstract
The oral cavity (mouth) has various microbial habitats, including, teeth, gingival sulcus, gingiva, tongue, inner cheek, hard palate, and soft palate. The human oral cavity houses the second most diverse microbiome in the body harboring over 700 bacterial species. The fine-tuned equilibrium of the oral microbiome ecosystem maintains oral health. Oral dysbiosis caused by food habits and poor oral hygiene leads to various oral diseases such as periodontitis, caries, gingivitis, and oral cancer. Recent advances in technology have revealed the correlation between the oral microbiome and systemic diseases such as pulmonary diseases, cardiovascular diseases, rheumatoid arthritis, Alzheimer's disease, and other metabolic diseases. Since the oral cavity directly connects with the upper respiratory tract, the oral microbiome has easier access to the respiratory system compared to other organ systems. Direct aspiration of oral microflora in the respiratory system and oral dysbiosis-induced host immune reaction and inflammation are mainly responsible for various pulmonary complications. Numbers of literature have reported the correlation between oral diseases and pulmonary diseases, suggesting the possible role of the oral microbiome in respiratory diseases such as chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases, pneumonia, lung cancer, etc. This paper reviews the current evidence in establishing a link between the oral microbiome and pulmonary diseases. We also discuss future research directions focusing on the oral microbiome to unravel novel therapeutic approaches that could prevent or treat the various pulmonary complications.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Evidence regarding the associations of tooth loss and denture use with incident cognitive impairment are inconclusive in older adults, and few prospective studies have examined the potential interaction between tooth loss and denture use in these specific populations. METHODS Data were assessed from 17,079 cognitively normal older adults aged ≥ 65 years, participating in the Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey (CLHLS). The outcome of interest was cognitive impairment (assessed by the Chinese version of Mini-Mental State Examination [MMSE]). The number of natural teeth and status of denture use were collected by a structural questionnaire. RESULTS A total of 6,456 cases of cognitive impairment were recorded during 88,627 person-years of follow-up. We found that compared with participants with 20+ teeth, those with 10-19, 1-9 and 0 teeth had increased risks of incident cognitive impairment (P-trend < 0.001). Participants without dentures also had a higher risk of incident cognitive impairment, compared with those who wore dentures. Effect modification by denture use was observed (P-interaction = 0.010). Specifically, among those without dentures, the adjusted HR (95% CI) for participants with 10-19, 1-9 and 0 teeth were 1.19 (1.08,1.30), 1.28 (1.17,1.39) and 1.28 (1.16,1.41), respectively, as compared to those with 20+ teeth. In contrary, among denture users, detrimental effect was only observed among those with 0 teeth (HR 1.14, 95% CI: 1.16,1.41). CONCLUSIONS In Chinese older adults, maintaining 20+ teeth is important for cognitive health; denture use would attenuate the detrimental effects of tooth loss, especially for partial tooth loss, on cognitive impairment.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Oral frailty is associated with the loss of oral function and increased care needs. We have previously developed an Oral Frailty Index (OFI-8) to identify older adults at risk of oral frailty. Herein, we aimed to examine whether OFI-8 scores are indicative of oral frailty or functional disability risk in community-dwelling older adults. METHODS A total of 2,011 individuals (51% women; mean age, 73.0 ± 5.5 years) participated in the 2012 baseline survey (last follow-up wave 2018). Oral frailty was assessed at each time point, based on tooth status, oral function, and other subjective measures. Functional disability was defined as long-term care certification granted during 2012-2019. The OFI-8 items were assessed at baseline. RESULTS The prevalence and incidence rates of oral frailty at baseline and 6 years were 16% and 24%, respectively. The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve of OFI-8 was 0.88 with 95% confidence interval of 0.86-0.90 for oral frailty. The OFI-8 score of ≥4 points maximized the sum of sensitivity and specificity values. The corresponding positive rate, sensitivity, specificity, positive, and negative predictive values were 30%, 80%, 80%, 43%, and 95%, respectively, for baseline oral frailty. A 1-point increase in the OFI-8 score corresponded to a 1.3-fold increase in the risk of new-onset oral frailty and 1.1-fold increase in the risk of disability. CONCLUSIONS OFI-8 may help identify individuals at risk of oral frailty and functional disability. It may also increase the awareness of oral care and facilitate its uptake.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Ageing leads to physiological cognitive decline that it is worsened in people with neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's disease. Despite the ongoing search for a solution to this cognitive decline, no effective remedies have been established. It has been determined that modifiable external factors, such as oral health and occlusal function, prevent cognitive decline. OBJECTIVE To analyse the primary interactions between occlusal function and cognitive functions. MAIN FINDINGS Masticatory function is related to cognitive functions. In particular, current evidence, from both animal and human studies, suggests that the activation of masticatory muscles and proper mastication, with natural teeth or dental prosthesis, induces the release of several mediators and the activation of specific brain areas. Together, they result in higher neuronal activity, neurotrophic support, blood flow and the prevention of amyloid-beta plaque formation. Thus, all the components of the masticatory system must work together in order to preserve cognitive function. CONCLUSIONS Available evidence suggests that oral and cognitive health are more interconnected than previously thought. Therefore, maintenance and adequate restoration of the whole masticatory system are important for the prevention of cognitive decline. In summary, oral and chewing health lead to healthy cognitive ageing.

Abstract
Background The cognitive effects of wearing a denture are not well understood. This study was conducted to clarify the effects of denture use on prefrontal and chewing muscle activities, occlusal state, and subjective chewing ability in partially edentulous elderly individuals. Methods A total of 16 partially edentulous patients were enrolled. Chewing-related prefrontal cortex and jaw muscle activities were simultaneously examined using a functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) device and electromyography, under the conditions of unwearing, and wearing a denture. Occlusal state and masticatory score were also determined under both conditions. Using multiple linear regression analysis, associations between prefrontal and chewing activities with wearing were examined using change rates. Results Chewing rhythmicity was maintained under both conditions. As compared with unwearing, the wearing condition was associated with improved prefrontal cortex and chewing muscle activities, occlusal state in regard to force and area, and masticatory score. Also, prefrontal activities were positively associated with burst duration and peak amplitude in masseter (Mm) and temporal muscle activities, as well as masticatory scores. In contrast, prefrontal activities were negatively associated with occlusal force. Conclusion Wearing a denture induced a positive association between burst duration and peak amplitude in Mm and temporal muscle activities and prefrontal activity, which may indicate a parallel consolidation of prefrontal cortex and rhythmical chewing activities, as well as masticatory scores. On the other hand, denture use induced a negative association of occlusal force with prefrontal activities, which might suggest that prefrontal compensative associations for the physiocognitive acquisition depended on biomechanical efficacy gained by wearing a denture.

Abstract
Resumo A detecção e o monitoramento do déficit cognitivo em idosos são necessários já que podem causar impacto em sua funcionalidade. O objetivo dessa revisão integrativa é analisar a produção científica sobre uso de instrumentos de avaliação cognitiva em idosos brasileiros por meio de artigos publicados nos últimos cinco anos, indexados nas bases de dados Web of Science, PubMed, Scopus e Bireme. Os critérios de inclusão foram: artigos originais publicados em inglês e português, de 2012 a 2016, com critério de idade definido para ser considerado idoso, e escore maior que 6 no CASP adaptado. O critério de exclusão foi: ser resumo de congresso. A amostra final foi composta por 100 artigos. Foram apresentados os 61 instrumentos de avaliação cognitiva utilizados nos estudos, com destaque para o Mini Exame do Estado Mental. Essa revisão apresenta o uso de instrumentos cognitivos na pesquisa brasileira, suas diferentes versões e quais domínios são avaliados. O número de instrumentos presentes na literatura foi amplo. Os mais utilizados foram o MEEM (versão de Brucki e colaboradores), o Teste de Fluência Verbal (categoria animais) e o Teste Span de dígitos (ordem direta e inversa). Os achados apresentados nessa revisão são relevantes não apenas para área da pesquisa observacional e experimental, mas também para a prática clínica.

Abstract
Background Beneficial effects of mastication on cognitive abilities in the elderly have been shown in human studies. However, little is currently known about the effect of masticatory stimulation on cognitive and perceptual ability in younger populations. The purpose of the present study is to investigate the influences of masticatory stimulation on perceptual ability in adolescent boys. Methods The present study examined the relationship between occlusal force (i.e., masticatory stimulation) and visual perception ability in adolescent boys. Visual perception ability was quantified by measuring global motion coherence threshold using psychophysical method. As an index of masticatory stimulation, occlusal force was measured by pressure sensitive film. We also measured participants’ athletic ability, e.g. aerobic capacity and grip strength, as potential confounding factor. Results The multiple regression analysis revealed a significant negative correlation between global motion coherence threshold and occlusal force, which persisted after controlling for confounding factors such as age and aerobic capacity. Conclusions This finding indicates that masticatory stimulation enhances visual perception in adolescent boys, indicating the possibility that beneficial effects of masticatory stimulation are observed not only in the elderly but in developing population consistently with the findings of the previous animal studies.

Abstract
The human brain sustains a slow but progressive decline in function as it ages and these changes are particularly profound in cognitive processing. A potential contributor to this deterioration is the gradual decline in the functioning of multiple sensory systems and the effects they have on areas of the brain that mediate cognitive function. In older adults, diminished capacity is typically observed in the visual, auditory, masticatory, olfactory, and motor systems, and these age-related declines are associated with both a decline in cognitive proficiency, and a loss of neurons in regions of the brain. We will review how the loss of hearing, vision, mastication skills, olfactory impairment, and motoric decline accompany cognitive loss, and how improved functioning of these systems may aid in the restoration of the cognitive abilities in older adults. The human brain appears to require a great deal of stimulation to maintain its cognitive efficacy as people age and environmental enrichment may aid in its maintenance and recovery.

Abstract
There is a growing body of literature which suggests that oral health and mastication can influence cognitive and systemic health during aging. However, it is currently unclear whether oral health, masticatory efficiency, cognitive health and systemic health merely deteriorate independently with age, or whether mechanisms exist linking mastication to cognitive and systemic health directly. The aim of this paper is to review the extent to which reduced mastication influences cognitive and systemic health during aging because this knowledge may underpin future interventions that improve quality of life. Current evidence suggests that a deterioration in mastication and oral health during aging can have: 1) direct effects on systemic health through mechanisms such as the migration of the oral microbiota into the systemic environment, and 2) indirect effects on systemic health through changes nutrient intake. A loss of teeth and reduction in masticatory efficiency during aging can have: 1) direct effects on cognitive performance and potentially impact cognitive health through mechanisms such as enhanced adult hippocampal neurogenesis, and 2) indirect effects on cognitive health through changes in nutrient intake. It is concluded that oral health and masticatory efficiency are modifiable factors which influence the risk poor cognitive and systemic health during aging, although it is currently premature to propose chewing-based interventions to slow the rate of cognitive decline and improve cognitive health during aging. Future research should include large-scale longitudinal studies which control for the types of confounding factors which concurrently influence the association between mastication and cognitive and systemic health.
