Abstract
Endocrine disruptive compounds are natural or anthropogenic environmental micropollutants that alter the function of the endocrine system ultimately damaging the metabolism. Bisphenol A (BPA) is the most common of these pollutants and it is often used in epoxy coatings and polycarbonates as a plasticizer. Therefore, monitoring BPA levels in different environments is very important and challenging. In recent years, an increasing number of BPA detection methods have been proposed. This article presents a critical review of aptamer-based electrochemical, fluorescence-based, colorimetric, and several other BPA detection platforms published in the last decade. Furthermore, a statistical evaluation has been made using principle component analysis showing analytical performance parameters do not create very different clusters. Comparisons to other BPA detection methods are also presented so that the reader has an overall literature overview.

Abstract
Endocrine-disrupting compounds (EDCs) are widely distributed in the environment. Here, we present a CRISPR/Cas12a (CAS) biosensor based on DNA aptamers for point-of-care detection of EDCs. Two typical EDCs, 17β-estradiol (E2) and bisphenol A (BPA), were selected to be detected by the CAS biosensors via the plug-and-play of their DNA aptamers. The results indicated that the performance of the CAS biosensors can be well regulated by controlling the trans-cleavage activity of Cas12a on a single-stranded DNA reporter and optimizing the sequence and ratio of DNA aptamer and activator DNA. Ultimately, two reliable and specific biosensors were developed, with the linear range and limit of detection of 0.2-25 nM and 0.08 nM for E2 and of 0.1-250 nM and 0.06 nM for BPA, respectively. Compared to the existing detection methods, the CAS biosensors showed higher reliability and sensitivity with simple operation, short detection time, and no costly equipment.

Abstract
Bisphenol A (BPA) is widely used in the manufacture of polycarbonate and epoxy-resin-based products, and BPA contamination often happens in a variety of types of environment and food stuffs. BPA can cause many harmful effects to health due to its high toxicity. The rapid detection of BPA is of great significance in environmental monitoring and food safety. Nucleic acid aptamers show advantages in biosensors due to good chemical stability, the ease of labeling functional groups, and target binding that induces conformation change. Here, we performed a thorough characterization of the binding performance of one 60-nt anti-BPA DNA aptamer with isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC). We found the crucial region of the aptamer sequence for affinity binding with BPA, and the aptamer was able to be truncated to 29-nt DNA without losing affinity. We then developed a simple reagent-less electrochemical aptamer-based sensor for rapid BPA detection with this engineered aptamer. The truncated aptamer with a redox tag methylene blue (MB) was immobilized on a gold electrode. BPA-binding induced the conformation change of the MB-labeled aptamer, moving the MB close to the electrode surface and causing a significant current increase in MB in square wave voltammetry (SWV). Under optimized conditions, we achieved the quantitative detection of BPA with a detection limit of BPA at 0.1 μM. This sensor showed quick response to BPA and could be regenerated by washing with deionized water. This sensor was selective, and it allowed detecting BPA in complex samples, showing its potential in practice. This study will help in further applications of the aptamers of BPA.

Aptamer-Based Biosensors for the Analytical Determination of Bisphenol A in Foodstuffs. APPLIED SCIENCES-BASEL 2022. Abstract
Bisphenol A (BPA) is a synthetic compound utilized to manufacture plastics for Food Contact Materials (FCMs) or resins for the inside of food containers. Since it was recognized as an Endocrine-Disrupting Chemical (EDC), its implications in pathologies, such as cancer, obesity, diabetes, immune system alterations, and developmental and mental disorders, have been widely documented. Diet is considered the main source of exposure for humans to BPA. Consequently, continuous monitoring of the levels of BPA in foods is necessary to assess the risk associated with its consumption in one’s diet. So far, many reviews have been published on biosensors and aptamer-based biosensors, but none of them focus on their applications in their analyses of bisphenols in food matrices. With this review, the authors aim to fill this gap and to take a snapshot of the current state-of-the-art research on aptasensors designed to detect BPA in food matrices. Given that a new TDI value has recently been proposed by the EFSA (0.04 ng/kg), the search for new sensitive tools for the quantitative analysis of BPA is more topical and urgent than ever. From this perspective, aptasensors prove to be a good alternative to traditional analytical techniques for determining BPA levels in food.

Abstract
The gold electrode was functionalized with anti-bisphenol A (BPA) aptamer and captured the BPA as analyte. By dropping the aptamer-modified magnetic Fe3O4/Au nanoparticles solution onto the electrode, a BPA molecule attaches to many aptamers that are in contact with a large number of Fe3O4/Au nanoparticles. The modified electrode were transferred to a solution containing Ag+ ions. Fe3O4/Au nanoparticles reduce the Ag+ ions to Ag0. A potential scan was applied for the oxidation of the Ag0-loaded magnetic nanoparticles to the AgCl. The magnitude of the stripping anodic signal of the Ag0 was related to the concentration of the BPA. The assay shows a detection limit of 0.6 fmol L-1 and linear range of 1 fmol L-1-150 pmol L-1 and. The applicability of the aptasensor is measured by its successful use in the sensing BPA in water, milk and juice samples and measuring BPA migration from different commercial plastic products.

Abstract
In the present study, an original electrode fabrication approach was devised to create a label free sensitive electrochemical aptasensor for the detection of Homocysteine (Hcy) (Homocysteine signal was used for detection). To bind certain targets, synthetic oligonucleotides used as aptamers (APs) were specifically selected. Aptamers are substitutes for antibodies for analytical devices because of their sensitivity and high affinity. In this study, Hcy-Binding-Aptamer (HBA) was grafted onto the surface of Au nanoparticles/Glassy Carbon Electrode (Au/GCE) in order to create an aptasensor. The effects of buffer concentration, buffer type, interaction time, and aptamer concentration were investigated and optimized. In addition, Differential Pulse Voltammetry (DPV) was implemented to identify homocysteine. Favorable performance was achieved at a detection limit of 0.01 μM (S/N = 3) and linear range 0.05-20.0 μM. Furthermore, the fabricated aptasensor displayed desirable stability and reproducibility. The developed electrochemical aptasensor was found to have reasonable selectivity for the detection of homocysteine in the presence of cysteine and methionine. Analysis of real samples showed good ability of the proposed homocysteine biosensor to provide sensitive, quick, easy, and cost effective measurement of homocysteine in human blood serum and urine samples.

Abstract
An aptasensor is described for the electrochemical determination of bisphenol A (BPA). Gold-coated multiwalled carbon nanotubes (Au/MWCNTs) and a single-stranded DNA-dye complex are used as a double signal-amplification system. The BPA-binding aptamer was assembled on a disposable electrode modified with Au/MWCNTs. Methylene blue (MB) was then intercalated into the immobilized aptamer with an approximately molecular ratio of 4 to form a complex. Upon interaction with BPA, the immobilized aptamer underwent a conformational change. This causes the intercalated MB to be released from the complex into solution. As a result, the electrochemical signal of the intercalated MB, typically measured using square wave voltammetry at a potential of -0.20 V (vs. Ag/AgCl (saturated KCl)) decreases. The fabrication of the aptasensor was characterized by the scanning electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, and electrochemical techniques. Under optimal experimental conditions, the current drops linearly with the logarithm of BPA concentrations over the range from 10 fM to 1 nM, and the limit of detection is 8 fM. The assay was applied to the determination of BPA in plastic drinking bottles, tap water, and milk. Abstract
Nanozymes have gained increasing attention in the field of biosensing. Rationally designed nanozymes with excellent catalytic activity are accessible to substitute natural enzymes. Herein, a novel self-powered photoelectrochemical (PEC) aptasensor was constructed for ultrasensitive detection of chloramphenicol (CAP) based on ultrathin PtNi nanowires (NWs) as nanozyme and benzene-ring doped g-C3N4 (BR-CN) as the photoactive material. The prepared 1-nm-thick PtNi nanozyme acted as a peroxidase, possessing higher catalytic activity than natural horseradish peroxidase (HRP) and other Pt-based mimic enzymes. Through the biotin-streptavidin specific interaction, streptavidin modified PtNi nanozyme was introduced into the dual-stranded DNA (dsDNA) formed by complementary DNA and biotinylated CAP aptamer. The PtNi nanozyme catalyzed 4-chloro-1-naphthol (4-CN) oxidation to generate insoluble precipitation on the electrode surface, resulting in an obvious photocurrent reduction. In the presence of CAP, the CAP aptamer was released from the electrode due to strong affinity with CAP, causing the decrease of catalytic precipitation and consequently the generation of a high photocurrent signal. On the basis of PtNi nanozyme signal amplification, the developed self-powered PEC aptasensor showed a wide linear range of 0.1 pM-100 nM with an ultralow detection limit of 26 fM for the determination of CAP. This work provides a feasible strategy for the design of high-activity nanozyme and self-powered PEC biosensor to achieve the ultrasensitive detection of target analyte.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Diethylstilbestrol (DES) residues are harmful to human health because of their potential carcinogenic properties. Therefore, it is important to develop a fast and efficient pretreatment method to prevent their harmful effects on human health and the environment. RESULTS In this paper, two types of magnetic molecularly imprinted polymers (MMIPs) of DES were prepared by bulk polymerization and the sol-gel method, respectively. The synthetic materials were characterized using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy and thermogravimetric analysis. Adsorption capacities of the bulk and sol-gel MMIPs were investigated. A rapid detection method was developed using the two types of MMIPs as sorbents, coupled to high-performance liquid chromatography, for the determination of DES residues in milk samples. Under optimized conditions, the limit of detection (S/N = 3) of both methods for DES was 2.0 μg L-1 ; and the linear response range to DES was 0.1-500 mg L-1 . The milk samples were analyzed according to this method with good recoveries of 88.3-97.6 and 90.5-103.5% for the two types of MMIPs, respectively. CONCLUSIONS The method described had high sensitivity and high selectivity, and could prove to be a new method for the rapid determination of DES residues in milk samples. © 2019 Society of Chemical Industry.

In the study, a novel sensing strategy based on dual-probe mode, which involved two groups of 2'-fluoro ribonucleic acid (2'-F RNA) modified probes, was designed for the detection of synthetic target double-strand DNA (dsDNA) of PML/RARα fusion genes in APL. And each pair of probes contained a thiolated capture probe (C1 or C2) immobilized on one of electrode surfaces in the dual-channel electrochemical biosensor and a biotinylated reporter probe (R1 or R2). The two groups of 2'-F RNA modified probes were separately complementary with the corresponding strand (Sa or Sb) from target dsDNA in order to prevent renaturation of target dsDNA. Through flanking target dsDNA, two "sandwitch" complexes (C1/Sa/R1 and C2/Sb/R2) were separately shaped by capture probes (C1 and C2) and free reporter probes (R1 and R2) in hybridization solution on the surfaces of different electrodes after the thermal denaturation. The biotin-modified enzyme which produced the measurable electrochemical current signal was localized to the surface by affinity binding between biotin with streptavidin. Under the optimal condition, the biosensor was able to detect 84 fM target dsDNA and showed a good specificity in PBS hybridization solution. Otherwise, the investigations of the specificity and sensitivity of the biosensor were carried out further in the mixed hybridization solution containing different kinds of mismatch sequences as interference background. It can be seen that under a certain interference background, the method still exhibited excellent selectivity and specificity for the discrimination between the fully-complementary and the mismatch sequences. The results of our research laid a good basis of further detection research in practical samples.

Abstract
Bisphenol A (BPA), a typical endocrine disruptor, is widely used as a key monomer in the packaging industry. Residual monomer can transfer from the package material to the food and thereby pose a risk to the health of the consumer, so determination of BPA migration is highly important for food safety control. In this study, a simple but sensitive electrochemiluminescence (ECL) biosensor, which combines the characteristics of high selectivity of an aptamer and high sensitivity of ECL, has been developed to detect BPA from package materials. The aptamer was immobilized on a gold electrode surface through Au-S interaction. The aptamer was then hybridized with complementary DNA (CDNA) to form double-stranded DNA (dsDNA). Ru(phen)32+ can intercalate into the grooves of dsDNA and acts as an ECL indicator; high ECL intensity can therefore be detected from the electrode surface. In the presence of BPA, which can competitively bind with the aptamer owing to their high affinity, Ru(phen)32+ is released from the electrode surface and the ECL of the system is decreased. The decreasing ECL signal has a linear relationship with BPA in the range of 0.1-100 pM with a detection limit of 0.076 pM. The developed biosensor has been applied to detect migration of BPA from different categories of canned drink with satisfactory results.
