Abstract
A new dual responsive colorimetric and fluorescent turn-off sensor for Fe3+ and Cu2+ was designed and synthesized based on quinoxaline derivative by a simple procedure reaction. 2,3-bis(6-bromopyridin-2-yl)-6-methoxyquinoxaline (BMQ) was fabricated and characterized using ATR-IR, 13C and 1H NMR, and Mass spectroscopy. The interaction of BMQ with Fe3+ caused a significant color change from colorless to yellow. The sensing complex BMQ-Fe3+ with high selectivity was described to be 1:1 by the molar ratio plot. In this experiment, iron was detected by naked-eye using a recently synthesized ligand (BMQ). This color change was unexpectedly observed in iron-overloaded plasma, which had previously been admitted by AAS (Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy). Normal plasma, however, did not exhibit this color change. Interestingly, Cu2+ ions cause a quench at the local emission around 565 nm. On the other hand, receptor-binding selectivity for Cu2+ over a wide linear concentration range was observed through changes in the emission spectra. BMQ-Cu2+ was characterized to be 1:1 by the Job's plot. The emission intensity of BMQ-Cu2+ complex was balanced within only 1 min. various mineral water samples were analyzed for detecting Cu2+. The results show the great potential of the developed probe BMQ for the sensing of Cu2+ ions in mineral and drinking water samples.

Abstract
The electrochemical behavior of the immobilized tyrosinase (Tyrase) on a modified glassy carbon electrode with carboxymethyl starch-graft-polyaniline/multi-walled carbon nanotubes nanocomposite (CMS-g-PANI@MWCNTs) was investigated. The molecular properties of CMS-g-PANI@MWCNTs nanocomposite and its morphological characterization were examined by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM). A simple drop-casting method was employed to immobilize Tyrase on the CMS-g-PANI@MWCNTs nanocomposite. In the cyclic voltammogram (CV), a pair of redox peaks were observed at the potentials of +0.25 to -0.1 V and E°' was equal to 0.1 V and the apparent rate constant of electron transfer (Ks) was calculated at 0.4 s-1. Using differential pulse voltammetry (DPV), the sensitivity and selectivity of the biosensor were investigated. The biosensor exhibits linearity towards catechol and L-dopa in the concentration range of 5-100 and 10-300 μM with a sensitivity of 2.4 and 1.11 μA μΜ-1 cm-2 and limit of detection (LOD) 25 and 30 μM, respectively. The Michaelis-Menten constant (Km) was calculated at 42 μΜ for catechol and 86 μΜ for L-dopa. After 28 working days, the biosensor provided good repeatability and selectivity, and maintained 67% of its stability. The existence of -COO- and -OH groups in carboxymethyl starch, -NH2 groups in polyaniline, and high surface-to-volume ratio and electrical conductivity of multi-walled carbon nanotubes in the CMS-g-PANI@MWCNTs nanocomposite cause good Tyrase immobilization on the surface of the electrode.

Abstract
Five mini proteins mimicking uricase comprising 20, 40, 60, 80, and 100 amino acids were designed based on the conserved active site residues within the same dimer, using the crystal structure of tetrameric uricase from Arthrobacter globiformis (PDB ID: 2yzb) as a template. Based on molecular docking analysis, the smallest mini protein, mp20, shared similar residues to that of native uricase that formed hydrogen bonds with uric acid and was chosen for further studies. Although purified recombinant mp20 did not exhibit uricase activity, it showed specific binding towards uric acid and evinced excellent thermotolerance and structural stability at temperatures ranging from 10°C to 100°C, emulating its natural origin. To explore the potential of mp20 as a bioreceptor in uric acid sensing, mp20 was encapsulated within zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (mp20@ZIF-8) followed by the modification on rGO-screen printed electrode (rGO/SPCE) to maintain the structural stability. An irreversible anodic peak and increased semicircular arcs of the Nyquist plot with an increase of the analyte concentrations were observed by utilizing cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), suggesting the detection of uric acid occurred, which is based on substrate-mp20 interaction.

Abstract
The surface tailored metal oxide nanostructures for the development of non-enzymatic sensors are highly demanded, but it is a big task due to the wide range of complexities during the growth process. The presented study focused on the surface modification of the heterogeneous morphology of cobalt oxide (Co3O4) prepared by the hydrothermal method. Further surface modification was conducted with the use of sodium citrate as a reducing and surface modifying agent for the Co3O4 nanostructures through the high density of oxygenated terminal groups from the citrate ions. The citrate ions enabled a significant surface modification of the Co3O4 nanostructures, which further improved the electrochemical properties of the Co3O4 material toward the design of the non-enzymatic ascorbic acid sensor in a phosphate buffer solution of pH 7.4. The morphology and crystal arrays of the Co3O4 nanostructures were studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) techniques. These physical characterizations showed the highly tailored surface features of Co3O4 nanostructures and a significant impact on the crystal properties. The electrochemical activity of Co3O4 was studied by chronoamperometry, linear sweep voltammetry, and cyclic voltammetry (CV) for the detection of ascorbic acid. The linear range of the proposed sensor was measured from 0.5 mM to 6.5 mM and a low limit of detection of 0.001 mM was also estimated. The presented Co3O4 nanostructures exhibited significant surface roughness and surface area, consequently playing a vital role toward the selective, sensitive, and stable detection of ascorbic acid. The use of a low cost surface modifying agent such as sodium citrate could be of great interest for the surface roughness and high surface area of nanostructured materials for the improved electrochemical properties for the biomedical, energy storage, and conversion systems.

Abstract
In this article, we review recent progress concerning the development of sensorial platforms based on graphene derivatives and conducting polymers (CPs), alternatively deposited or co-deposited on the working electrode (usually a glassy carbon electrode; GCE) using a simple potentiostatic method (often cyclic voltammetry; CV), possibly followed by the deposition of metallic nanoparticles (NPs) on the electrode surface (ES). These materials have been successfully used to detect an extended range of biomolecules of clinical interest, such as uric acid (UA), dopamine (DA), ascorbic acid (AA), adenine, guanine, and others. The most common method is electrochemical synthesis. In the composites, which are often combined with metallic NPs, the interaction between the graphene derivatives-including graphene oxide (GO), reduced graphene oxide (RGO), or graphene quantum dots (GQDs)-and the CPs is usually governed by non-covalent functionalization through π-π interactions, hydrogen bonds, and van der Waals (VW) forces. The functionalization of GO, RGO, or GQDs with CPs has been shown to speed up electron transfer during the oxidation process, thus improving the electrochemical response of the resulting sensor. The oxidation mechanism behind the electrochemical response of the sensor seems to involve a partial charge transfer (CT) from the analytes to graphene derivatives, due to the overlapping of π orbitals.

Abstract
This work presents the use of encapsulated mini protein 20 mimicking uricase (mp20)-zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) as a bioreceptor for the development of a nanozyme-based electrochemical biosensor for uric acid detection. The electrochemical performance of the biofunctionalized mp20@ZIF-8 on the reduced graphene oxide/screen-printed carbon electrode (rGO/SPCE) was investigated by optimizing operating parameters such as pH, deposition potential, and deposition time using a central composite design-response surface methodology (CCD-RSM). The quadratic regression model was developed to correlate the combination of each variable to the oxidation current density as a response. A significant effect on current response was observed under optimized conditions of pH of 7.4 at −0.35 V deposition potential and 56.56 s deposition time, with p < 0.05 for each interacted factor. The obtained coefficient of determination (R2) value of 0.9992 indicated good agreement with the experimental finding. The developed nanozyme biosensor (mp20@ZIF-8/rGO/SPCE) exhibited high selectivity in the presence of the same fold concentration of interfering species with a detection limit of 0.27 μM, over a concentration range of 1 to 34 μM. The practicality of the tailored biosensor in monitoring uric acid in human serum and urine samples was validated with high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and a commercial uric acid meter. Hence, nanozyme-based is a promising platform that offers a rapid, sensitive, selective, and low-cost biosensor for the non-enzymatic detection of uric acid in biological samples.

Abstract
Electrode interfaces with both antibiofouling properties and electrocatalytic activity can promote the practical application of nonenzymatic electrochemical sensors in biological fluids. Compared with graphene, graphene oxide (GO) possesses unique properties such as superior solubility (hydrophilicity) in water, negative charge, and abundant oxygenated groups (oxo functionalities) in the plane and edge sites, which play an essential role in electrocatalysis and functionalization. In this work, a micro electrochemical sensor consisting of GO-modified screen-printed electrode and PDMS micro-cell was designed to achieve multi-analyte detection with excellent selectivity and anti-biofouling properties by electrochemically tuning the oxygen-containing functional species, hydrophilicity/hydrophobicity, and electrical conductivity. In particular, the presented electrodes demonstrated the potential in the analysis of biological samples in which electrodes often suffer from serious biofouling. The interaction of proteins with electrodes as well as uric acid was investigated and discussed.

Abstract
Dopamine (DA) is an important neurotransmitter used for diagnosing various diseases from its abnormal concentrations in human fluids. Herein, an electrochemical sensor based on a composite of re-doped poly(N-methylaniline) (rePNMA) and modified multi-walled carbon nanotubes (fMWCNTs), termed fMWCNT-rePNMA, was developed to measure DA concentration. The successful modification of the fMWCNT surface was confirmed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Raman spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Cyclic voltammetry (CV) displayed an excellent electrocatalytic activity of the fMWCNTs-rePNMA composite towards the oxidation of DA. The developed fMWCNTs-rePNMA composite demonstrated a broad linear range from 5 to 90 μmol L-1 with a low limit of detection (LOD) value of 2.23 μmol L-1, and a fast response with a high sensitivity of 251.5 nA μmol-1 L as determined from the calibration curve of the DA determination. In addition, the fMWCNTs-rePNMA composite selectively identified and quantified DA in the presence of ascorbic acid (AA) and uric acid (UA). Therefore, the fMWCNTs-rePNMA composite sensor shows potential to determine the level of DA in human urine.

Abstract
Many diseases are closely related to abnormal concentrations of ascorbic acid (AA), dopamine (DA), and uric acid (UA). Therefore, the detection of these small molecules is significant for monitoring life metabolism and healthy states. Electrochemical detection has been widely used to detect small molecules due to its good selectivity, high sensitivity, and good economics. Fabrication and application are two sides of the coin, and we cannot give up one for the other. Graphene (GN) is a very suitable material for electrochemical sensing due to its excellent catalytic performance and large specific surface area. It possesses many excellent properties but cannot hold itself alone due to its nanoscale thickness. Herein, we have fabricated three-dimensional (3D) GN nanosheets (GNSs) on flexible carbon cloth (CC) by thermal chemical vapor deposition (CVD). The GNSs/CC can successfully detect AA, DA, and UA simultaneously. We find that these GNSs/CC sensors show good performance with 7 h CVD modification. The linear ranges of AA, DA, and UA are 0.02-0.1, 0.0005-0.02, and 0.0005-0.02 mM, respectively. The detection sensitivity rates of AA, DA, and UA are 5,470, 60,500, and 64,000 μA mM-1 cm-2, respectively. Our GNSs/CC flexible sensors can be successfully applied in the human serum for UA detection. The result matches with commercial sensors very well.

Abstract
The paper describes the development of a carbon veil-based electrode (CVE) for determining uric acid (UA) in saliva. The electrode was manufactured by lamination technology, electrochemically activated and used as a highly sensitive voltammetric sensor (CVEact). Potentiostatic polarization of the electrode at 2.0 V in H2SO4 solution resulted in a higher number of oxygen and nitrogen-containing groups on the electrode surface; lower charge transfer resistance; a 1.5 times increase in the effective surface area and a decrease in the UA oxidation potential by over 0.4 V, compared with the non-activated CVE, which was confirmed by energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, chronoamperometry and linear sweep voltammetry. The developed sensor is characterized by a low detection limit of 0.05 µM and a wide linear range (0.09-700 µM). The results suggest that the sensor has perspective applications for quick determination of UA in artificial and human saliva. RSD does not exceed 3.9%, and recovery is 96-105%. UA makes a significant contribution to the antioxidant activity (AOA) of saliva (≈60%). In addition to its high analytical characteristics, the important advantages of the proposed CVEact are the simple, scalable, and cost-effective manufacturing technology and the absence of additional complex and time-consuming modification operations.

Abstract
Electrochemical sensors appear as low-cost, rapid, easy to use, and in situ devices for determination of diverse analytes in a liquid solution. In that context, conducting polymers are much-explored sensor building materials because of their semiconductivity, structural versatility, multiple synthetic pathways, and stability in environmental conditions. In this state-of-the-art review, synthetic processes, morphological characterization, and nanostructure formation are analyzed for relevant literature about electrochemical sensors based on conducting polymers for the determination of molecules that (i) have a fundamental role in the human body function regulation, and (ii) are considered as water emergent pollutants. Special focus is put on the different types of micro- and nanostructures generated for the polymer itself or the combination with different materials in a composite, and how the rough morphology of the conducting polymers based electrochemical sensors affect their limit of detection. Polypyrroles, polyanilines, and polythiophenes appear as the most recurrent conducting polymers for the construction of electrochemical sensors. These conducting polymers are usually built starting from bifunctional precursor monomers resulting in linear and branched polymer structures; however, opportunities for sensitivity enhancement in electrochemical sensors have been recently reported by using conjugated microporous polymers synthesized from multifunctional monomers.

Abstract
A fresh strategy based on two-step electrochemical reduction for the fabrication of palladium nanoparticles/reduced oxide nanocomposite-modified glass carbon electrode (PdNPs/rGO/GCE) was established in this study. Field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) images showed that spherical PdNPs were evenly distributed on the surface of rGO-modified electrode (rGO/GCE), and the introduction of PdNPs has no effect on the morphology of rGO. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) studies revealed that the conductivity of PdNPs/rGO/GCE was higher than that of rGO/GCE and bare GCE. The electrochemical performances of PdNPs/rGO/GCE sensor were investigated by cyclic voltammetry (CV), differential pulse voltammetry (DPV), and chronoamperometry using ascorbic acid (AA), dopamine (DA), and uric acid (UA) as analytes. At the optimized conditions, wide linear ranges of 0.5–3.5 mM (R2 = 0.99), 3–15 μM (R2 = 0.99) and 15–42 μM (R2 = 0.99), and 0.3–1.4 mM (R2 = 0.99) towards AA, DA, and UA in ternary mixture were observed, respectively. In addition to superior anti-interference capability, fast response (≤5 s), excellent reproducibility, and good long-term stability were also given by this sensor. These results suggested that PdNPs/rGO/GCE is promising for the simultaneous detection of AA, DA, and UA in practical application.

Abstract
A method with high sensitivity, good accuracy and fast response is of ever increasing importance for the simultaneous detection of AA, DA and UA. In this paper, a simple and sensitive electrochemical sensor, which based on the polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP)-graphene composite film modified glassy carbon electrode (PVP-GR/GCE), was presented for detecting ascorbic acid (AA), dopamine (DA) and uric acid (UA) simultaneously. The PVP-GR/GCE has excellent electrocatalytic activity for the oxidation of AA, DA and UA. The second-order derivative linear sweep voltammetry was used for the electrochemical measurements. The peak potential differences of DA-AA, DA-UA, and UA-AA (measured on the PVP-GR/GCE) were 212, 130 and 342 mV respectively. Besides, the over potential of AA, DA and UA reduced obviously, so did the peak current increase. Under the optimum conditions, the linear ranges of AA, DA and UA were 4.0 μM–1.0 mM, 0.02–100 μM, and 0.04–100 μM, respectively. The detection limits were 0.8 μM, 0.002 μM and 0.02 μM for AA, DA, and UA. The electrochemical sensor presented the advantages of high sensitivity and selectivity, excellent reproducibility and long-term stability. Furthermore, the sensor was successfully applied to the analysis of real samples.![]()

Electrodeposited poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) doped with graphene oxide for the simultaneous voltammetric determination of ascorbic acid, dopamine and uric acid. Mikrochim Acta 2020; 187:94. Abstract
Poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) films were electrodeposited by cyclic voltammetry on a glassy carbon electrode (GCE) in aqueous solution. Three kinds of supporting electrolytes were used, viz. graphene oxide (GO), phosphate buffered saline (PBS), and GO in PBS, respectively. The surface morphology of the modified electrodes was characterized by scanning electron microscopy. The electrochemical performance of the modified electrodes was investigated by cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy by using the hexacyanoferrate redox system. The results demonstrate that the PEDOT-GO/GCE, which was electropolymerized in aqueous solutions containing EDOT and GO, shows the best electrochemical activities compared with other modified electrodes. The electrochemical behaviors of ascorbic acid (AA), dopamine (DA) and uric acid (UA) were investigated by cyclic voltammetry. The PEDOT-GO/GCE exhibits enhanced electrocatalytic activities towards these important biomolecules. Under physiological pH conditions and in the mixed system of AA, DA and UA, the modified GCE exhibits the following figures of merit: (a) a linear voltammetric response in the concentration ranges of 100-1000 μM for AA, 6.0-200 μM for DA, and 40-240 μM for UA; (b) well separated oxidation peaks near 31, 213 and 342 mV (vs. saturated Ag/AgCl) for AA, DA and UA, respectively; and (c) detection of limits (at S/N = 3) of 20, 2.0 and 10 μM. The results demonstrate that GO, based on its relatively large number of anionic sites, can be used as the sole weak electrolyte and charge balance dopant for the preparation of functionally doped conducting polymers by electrodeposition. Abstract
A novel electrochemical immunosensor was developed for label-free detection of carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) as a cancer biomarker. The designed immunosensor was based on CEA antibody (anti-CEA) anchored with core shell Fe3O4@Au nanoparticles which were immobilized on a screen-printed carbon electrode modified with manganese dioxide decorating on graphene nanoplatelets (SPCE/GNP-MnO2/Fe3O4@Au-antiCEA). The SPCE was placed onto a home-made electrode holder for easy handling. The approach was based on direct binding of CEA to a fixed amount of anti-CEA on the modified electrode for the specific detection using linear sweep voltammetry (LSV) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) monitored in a solution containing 5 mM [Fe(CN)63-/4-] prepared in 0.1 M phosphate buffer at pH 7.4. The difference in signal response owing to the redox reaction of [Fe(CN)6]3-/4- before and after interaction with CEA was regarded as the immunosensor response corresponding directly to the CEA concentration. Under optimized conditions, the linear range of 0.001-100 ng/mL, and the detection limits of 0.10 pg/mL (LSV) and 0.30 pg/mL (EIS) were evaluated. The applicability of the immunosensor was verified by well-corresponding determination of CEA in diluted human serum samples by electrochemiluminescence (ECL) immunoassay. Therefore, the proposed immunosensor could be suitable enough for a real sample analysis of CEA.

Abstract
Inherently conducting polymers (ICPs) are a specific category of synthetic polymers with distinctive electro-optic properties, which involve conjugated chains with alternating single and double bonds. Polyaniline (PANI), as one of the most well-known ICPs, has outstanding potential applications in biomedicine because of its high electrical conductivity and biocompatibility caused by its hydrophilic nature, low-toxicity, good environmental stability, and nanostructured morphology. Some of the limitations in the use of PANI, such as its low processability and degradability, can be overcome by the preparation of its blends and nanocomposites with various (bio)polymers and nanomaterials, respectively. This review describes the state-of-the-art of biological activities and applications of conductive PANI-based nanocomposites in the biomedical fields, such as antimicrobial therapy, drug delivery, biosensors, nerve regeneration, and tissue engineering. The latest progresses in the biomedical applications of PANI-based nanocomposites are reviewed to provide a background for future research.

In this study, platinum nanochains (PtNCs), multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and graphene nanoparticles (GNPs) were assembled together to form a novel nanocomposite by a facile ultrasonic-assisted blending process. The PtNCs-MWCNTs-GNPs nanocomposite was characterized by high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The nanocomposite was used for the modification of glass carbon electrode (GCE) and simultaneous determination of dopamine (DA) and ascorbic acid (AA) by differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) and cycle voltammetry (CV). Under the optimum conditions, the calibration curves obtained are linear for the currents versus DA and AA concentrations over the range 2.00-50.0 μM and 100-1200 μM, respectively. And the detection limits for DA and AA are 0.500 μM and 10.0 μM, respectively. The detection and quantitative analysis of DA and AA in human serum and vitamin C tablets on PtNCs-MWCNTs-GNPs/GCE gave the recoveries of 104-110% and 101-108% with relative standard deviations (RSD) of 4.36-7.48% and 0.620-2.90%, respectively. The proposed PtNCs-MWCNTs-GNPs composite could provide a new platform for the routine analysis of DA and AA in terms of its good anti-interference ability, excellent reproducibility and repeatability, and feasibility of use.
