Abstract
Catalysts play a pivotal role in advanced oxidation processes for the remediation of organic wastewater. In this study, a 3D carbon fiber@Fe3O4-CuO catalyst was fabricated, and its efficacy for persulfate activation to remove sulfamethoxazole (SMX) was investigated at extremely low current density. The results of characterization revealed that the catalyst was uniformly distributed on the carbon fiber, and the loaded catalyst was Fe3O4-CuO nanoparticles with a diameter range of 20-50 nm. The SMX removal rate was significantly enhanced at extremely low current density by the metallic oxide catalyst loaded on carbon fiber. Approximately 90 % of SMX was degraded within 90 min when the electric current density was set at 0.1 mA cm-2. This modification process not only improved the persulfate activation efficiency but also enhanced the generation of hydrogen peroxide. Both radical and non-radical pathways were involved in the degradation of SMX. The degradation pathway mainly included hydroxylation, carboxylation, aniline cleavage, and desulfonation reactions. The quantitative structure-activity relationship model indicated that the potential risk of intermediate products to fish, daphnia, and green algae significantly decreased during the electrocatalytic oxidation process. This study provides a novel strategy for persulfate activation, which can significantly enhance the degradation efficiency, toxicity abatement, and energy usage effectiveness of electrocatalytic technology.

Abstract
Lincomycin (LC) is an extensively applied broad-spectrum antibiotic, and its considerable residues in wastewater have caused a series of environmental problems, which makes degradation of LC wastewater extremely urgent. In this work, we have constructed a novel boron nitride (BN) and samarium (Sm) co-modified Ti/PbO2 as anode for high-performance degradation of LC wastewater. Compared with Ti/PbO2, Ti/PbO2-Sm, and Ti/PbO2-BN electrodes, Ti/PbO2-BN-Sm electrode with smaller pyramidal particles possesses higher oxygen evolution potential (2.32 V), excellent accelerated service life (103 h), and outstanding electrocatalytic activity. The single-factor experiments demonstrate that under optimized conditions (current density of 20 mA.cm-2, 6.0 g L-1 Na2SO4, pH 9, and temperature of 30°C), removal rate and COD degradation rate of LC at 3 h have reached 92.85% and 89.11%, respectively. At the same time, degradation of LC is in accordance with the primary kinetic model. Based on the analysis of high-performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS), four possible degradation pathways are hypothesized. Therefore, efficient electrochemical degradation of LC by using an extremely long-life Ti/PbO2 electrode with high catalytic activity may be a promising method.

Abstract
The traditional interlayer of PbO2 electrode possessed many problems, such as short service lifetime and limited specific surface area. Herein, a novel and efficient Ti/polyaniline-Co/PbO2-Co electrode was conctructed employing cyclic voltammetry to introduce a Co-doped polyaniline interlayer and anodic electrodeposition to synthetize a β-PbO2-Co active layer. Compared with pristine PbO2 electrode, Ti/polyaniline-Co/PbO2-Co exhibited more compact crystalline shape and higher active sites amounts. Pratically, the electrochemical degradation of 5 mg L-1 cephalexin in real secondary effluents was effectively achieved by the novel anode with 87.42% cephalexin removal and 71.8% COD mineralization after 120 min of 15 mA cm-2 electrolysis. The hydroxyl radical production and electrochemical stability were increased by 3.16 and 3.27 times respectively. The cephalexin degradation pathway was investigated by combining a density functional theory-based theoretical approach and LC-QTrap-MS/MS. The most likely cleavage point of the β-lactam ring was the O=C-N bond, whose attack would produce small molecular compounds containing the thiazole and 4, 6-thiazine rings. Further oxidation produced inorganic ions; quantitative investigations indicated the amino groups to undergo decomposition to form aqueous NH4+, which was further oxidized to NO3-. The accumulation of NO3- and SO42-, combined with a decrease in toxicity toward Escherichia coli, demonstrated the efficient mineralization of cephalexin on the Ti/polyaniline-Co/PbO2-Co electrode.

Abstract
A novel three-dimensional network nickel foam/PbO2 combination electrode (PbO2-NF) with high electrochemical degradation efficiency to norfloxacin was successfully fabricated through the electrodeposition of PbO2 on the substrate of nickel foam. The characterization of an PbO2-NF electrode, including surface morphology, elemental components, electrochemical performance, and stability was performed. In electrochemical oxidation tests, the removal efficiency of norfloxacin (initial concentration for 50 mg/L) on PbO2-NF reached 88.64% within 60 min of electrolysis, whereas that of pure nickel foam was only 30%. In the presence of PbO2-NF, the optimum current density, solution pH, electrode spacing for norfloxacin degradation were 30 mA/cm2, 11, and 3 cm, respectively. The electric energy consumption for 80% norfloxacin was approximately 5 Wh/L. Therefore, these results provide a new anode to improve the removal of norfloxacin in the wastewater with high efficiency and low energy consumption.

Abstract
Anodic oxidation has emerged as a promising treatment technology for the removal of a broad range of organic pollutants from wastewaters. Hydroxyl radicals are the primary species generated in anodic oxidation systems to oxidize organics. In this review, the methods of identifying hydroxyl radicals and the existing debates and misunderstandings regarding the validity of experimental results are discussed. Consideration is given to the methods of quantification of hydroxyl radicals in anodic oxidation systems with particular attention to approaches used to compare the electrochemical performance of different anodes. In addition, we describe recent progress in understanding the mechanisms of hydroxyl radical generation at the surface of most commonly used anodes and the utilization of hydroxyl radical in typical electrochemical reactors. This review shows that the key challenges facing anodic oxidation technology are related to i) the elimination of mistakes in identifying hydroxyl radicals, ii) the establishment of an effective hydroxyl radical quantification method, iii) the development of cost effective anode materials with high corrosion resistance and high electrochemical activity and iv) the optimization of electrochemical reactor design to maximise the utilization efficiency of hydroxyl radicals.

Abstract
A polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) doped PbO2 anode with a highly hydrophobicity was fabricated by electrodeposition method. In this process, vertically aligned TiO2 nanotubes (TiO2NTs) are formed by the anodic oxidation of Ti plates as an intermediate layer for PbO2 electrodeposition. The characterization of the electrodes indicated that PTFE was successfully introduced to the electrode surface, the TiO2NTs were completely covered with β-PbO2 particles and gave it a large surface area, which also limited the growth of its crystal particles. Compared with the conventional Ti/PbO2 and Ti/TiO2NTs/PbO2 electrode, the Ti/TiO2NTs/PbO2-PTFE electrode has enhanced surface hydrophobicity, higher oxygen evolution potential, lower electrochemical impedance, with more active sites, and generate more hydroxyl radicals (·OH), which were enhanced by the addition of PTFE nanoparticles. The electrocatalytic performance of the three electrodes were investigated using dibutyl phthalate (DBP) as the model pollutant. The efficiency of the DBP removal of the three electrodes was in the order: Ti/TiO2NTs/PbO2-PTFE > Ti/TiO2NTs/PbO2 > Ti/PbO2. The degradation process followed the pseudo-first-order kinetic model well, with rate constants of 0.1326, 0.1266, and 0.1041 h-1 for the three electrodes, respectively. The lowest energy consumption (6.1 kWh g-1) was obtained after 8 h of DBP treatment using Ti/TiO2NTs/PbO2-PTFE compared to Ti/TiO2NTs/PbO2 (6.7 kWh g-1) and Ti/PbO2 (7.4 kWh g-1) electrodes. Moreover, the effects of current density, initial pH and electrolyte concentration were investigated. Finally, the products of the DBP degradation process were verified based on gas chromatography-mass spectrometry analysis, and possible degradation pathways were described.

Abstract
Coal tar wastewater is hard to degrade by traditional methods because of its toxic pollutant constituents and high concentration of aromatic hydrocarbons, especially phenolic substances. A new type of hydrophobic benzacetone modified PbO2 anode (BA-PbO2 electrodes) was used for the electrocatalytic treatment of coal tar wastewater in a continuous cycle reactor. The surface morphology, structure, valences of elements, hydrophobicity, hydroxyl radical (·OH) produced capacity, electrochemical properties and stability of BA-PbO2 electrodes were characterized by SEM (scanning electron microscopy), XRD (X-ray diffraction), XPS (X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy), contact angle, a fluorescence probe test, an electrochemical workstation and accelerated life test, respectively. The BA-PbO2 electrodes exhibited a compact structure and finely dispersed crystallize size of 4.6 nm. The optimum degradation conditions of coal tar wastewater were as follows: current density of 90 mA cm-2, electrode gap of 1 cm and temperature at 25 °C with flow velocity of 80 L h-1. The chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal efficiency reached 92.39% after 240 min of degradation under the optimized conditions and the after-treatment COD value was 379.51 mg L-1 which was lower than the centralized emission standard (less than 400 mg L-1). These findings demonstrated the feasibility and efficiency of electrocatalytically degrading coal tar wastewater by BA-PbO2 electrodes. The possible mechanism and pathway for phenol a specific pollutant in coal tar wastewater were investigated by quantum chemistry calculations (Multiwfn) and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The toxicity of each intermediate was predicted by the ECOSAR program.

Abstract
A three-dimensional biofilm electrode magnetism reactor (3DBEMR) was constructed to removal naproxen (NPX). This study evaluated 3DBEMR performance in removal of refractory NPX, while also discussing the effect of the electro-magnetic superposition on microbial community by high throughput sequencing. Results indicated that 3DBEMR's average removal rate for NPX stood at 88.36%, representing an increase by 75.24%, 65.03% and 12.36%, respectively, compared to 3DBR (Three-Dimensional Biofilm Reactor), 3DBMR (Three-Dimensional Biofilm Magnetism Reactor) and 3DBER (Three-Dimensional Biofilm Electrode Reactor). This was attributed to the influence of electro-magnetic adsorption, electro-oxidaton/catalysis, and electro-magnetic biodegradation. Another major contributing factor to NPX removal was the presence in 3DBEMR of high-abundance genera such as Rhodobacter, Porphyrobacter, Methyloversatilis, Sphingopyxis,Bosea, Singulisphaera, Sphingomonas. Therefore, the 3DBEMR was successfully demonstrated to be a flexible and effective technique in NPX degradation, which would help to better understand the effect of superposition of electric and magnetic fields on microbial community.

Abstract
Various pharmaceuticals have been detected in natural water and wastewater bodies, causing threats to water ecosystem and human health. Although electrochemical anodic-oxidation (EAO) has been shown to be efficient for pharmaceuticals degradation from aqueous solution, it still has a distinct need to apply EAO technology for pharmaceuticals removal rationally. This review provides the most recent progress on the mechanisms, influencing factors, and new technique of EAO for pharmaceuticals degradation. The mechanism and superiority of EAO were analyzed. Major influencing factors (e.g., electrode materials, electrochemical reactor, applied current density, anode-cathode distance, electrolyte type and concentration, initial solution pH value, and initial pharmaceuticals concentration) were discussed on the removal of pharmaceuticals. The latest development of reactive electrochemical membranes (REM) was regarded as an emerging EAO technique, and it was also highlighted. This work revealed that the EAO of pharmaceuticals has extraordinary application prospects in the field of water and wastewater treatment.

Abstract
A three-dimensional electrochemical reactor with Ti/SnO2-Sb/β-PbO2 anode and granular activated carbon (3DER-GAC) particle electrodes were used for degradation of 2,4-dichlorophenol (2,4-DCP). Process modeling and optimization were performed using an orthogonal central composite design (OCCD) and genetic algorithm (GA), respectively. Ti/SnO2-Sb/β-PbO2 anode was prepared by electrochemical deposition method and then its properties were studied by FESEM, EDX, XRD, Linear sweep voltammetry and accelerated lifetime test techniques. The results showed that lead oxide was precipitated as highly compact pyramidal clusters in the form of β-PbO2 on the electrode surface. In addition, the prepared anode had high stability (170 h) and oxygen evolution potential (2.32 V). A robust quadratic model (p-value < 0.0001 and R2 > 0.99) was developed to predict the 2,4-DCP removal efficiency in the 3DER-GAC system. Under optimal conditions (pH = 4.98, Na2SO4 concentration = 0.07 M, current density = 35 mA cm-2, GAC amount = 25 g and reaction time = 50 min), the removal efficiency of 2,4-DCP in the 3DER-GAC system and the separate electrochemical degradation process (without GAC particle electrode) were 99.8 and 71%, respectively. At a reaction time of 80 min, the TOC removal efficiencies in the 3DER-GAC and the separate electrochemical degradation system were 100 and 57.5%, respectively. Accordingly, the energy consumed in these two systems was calculated to be 0.81 and 1.57 kWh g-1 TOC, respectively. Based on the results of LC-MS analysis, possible degradation pathways of 2,4-DCP were proposed. Trimerization and ring opening reactions were the two dominant mechanisms in 2,4-DCP degradation.

Abstract
Ciprofloxacin (CIP) is ubiquitous in the environment which poses a certain threat to human and ecology. In this investigation, the physical and electrochemical properties of graphite felt (GF) anodes which affected the anodic oxidation (AO) performance, and the CIP removal effect of GF were evaluated. The GFs were used as anodes for detection of ·OH with coumarin (COU) as molecule probe and removal of CIP in a 150 mL electrolytic cell with Pt cathode (AO-GF/Pt system). The results showed that hydrophilic GF (B-GF) owned higher sp3/sp2 and more oxygen-containing and nitrogen-containing functional groups than the hydrophobic GF (A-GF). Moreover, B-GF possessed higher oxygen evolution potential (1.12 V), more active sites and stronger ·OH generation capacity. Above mentioned caused that B-GF exhibited more superior properties for CIP removal. The best efficiencies (96.95%, 99.83%) were obtained in the AO-B-GF/Pt system at 6.25 mAcm-2 after 10 min (k1, 0.356 min-1) and 60 min (k2, 0.224 min-1), respectively. Furthermore, nine degradation pathways of CIP in AO-B-GF/Pt system were summarized as the cleavage of the piperazine ring, cyclopropyl group, quinolone ring and F atom by ·OH. It provides new insights into the removal and degradation pathways of CIP with GF in AO system.
