Electrochemical generation of phenothiazin-5-ium. A sustainable strategy for the synthesis of new bis(phenylsulfonyl)-10H-phenothiazine derivatives

In this work, the electrochemical generation of phenothiazin-5-ium (PTZox) from the direct oxidation of phenothiazine (PTZ) in a water/acetonitrile mixture using a commercial carbon anode and conventional stainless steel cathode is reported. PTZox is a reactive intermediate with high potential synthetic applications, which is used in this paper for the synthesis of new phenothiazine derivatives. In this work a novel and simple electrochemical methodology for the synthesis of some bis(phenylsulfonyl)-10H-phenothiazine derivatives was established. In this paper, a mechanism for PTZ oxidation in the presence of arylsulfinic acids has been proposed based on the results obtained from voltammetric and coulometric experiments as well as spectroscopic data of the products. These syntheses are performed in a simple cell by applying constant current under mild conditions and at room temperature with high atom economy.

Boosted electrocatalytic oxidation of organophosphorus pesticides by a novel high-efficiency CeO2-Doped PbO2 anode: An electrochemical study, parameter optimization and degradation mechanisms

This article presents a novel and highly efficient electrocatalytic degradation method for two significant organophosphorus pesticides, fenitrothion (FEN), and methyl parathion (MPN), using a Ti/β-PbO2-CeO2 modified anode (indirect oxidation). A comprehensive electrochemical investigation was also carried out to gain new insight into the redox behavior and destruction pathway of these pesticides (direct oxidation). The study also explores the effects of various operating parameters, such as initial solution pH, applied current density, and initial pesticides concentration, on the conversion-paired electrocatalytic removal process. To further enhance the degradation efficiency, a new configuration of the electrochemical cell was designed, employing two types of electrodes and two independent power supply devices. The conversion paired electrocatalytic degradation process of these pesticides involves first the direct reduction of FEN (or MPN) on a graphite cathode and then the indirect oxidation of reduced FEN (or MPN) by hydroxyl radicals electro generated on the Ti/β-PbO2-CeO2 anode. The synergism of these two processes together will effectively lead to FEN (or MPN) degradation. The degradation percentages of 98% for FEN and 95% for MPN at the optimal conditions for the electrochemical degradation of these pesticides were achieved at pH = 7, initial concentration 50 mg L-1, with a current density of 90 mA cm-2 for direct reduction and 11 mA cm-2 for indirect oxidation. Overall, this study presents a promising and efficient approach for the remediation of organophosphorus pesticide-contaminated environments, offering valuable insights into the electrochemical degradation process and highlighting the potential for practical application in wastewater treatment and environmental protection.

A new type of convergent paired electrochemical synthesis of sulfonamides under green and catalyst-free conditions

Our main goal in this work is to synthesize valuable sulfonamide compounds according to the principles of green chemistry and also to present a unique convergent paired mechanism for their synthesis. In this study, we introduced a new type of convergent paired electro-organic synthesis of sulfonamide derivatives via a catalyst, oxidant, halogen and amine-free method. In this research, instead of using toxic amine compounds, an innovative mechanism based on the reduction of nitro compounds and in-situ production of amine compounds was used. The mechanism of electrophile generation is the cathodic reduction of the nitro compound to the hydroxylamine compound and then the anodic oxidation of the hydroxylamine to the nitroso compound. On the other hand, the nucleophile generation mechanism involves the two-electron oxidation of sulfonyl hydrazide to related sulfinic acid at the anode surface. The reaction leading to the synthesis of sulfonamides involves a one-pot reaction of the generated nitroso compound with the produced sulfinic compound.

Dimedone nanoparticle as a promising approach against toxoplasmosis: In vitro and in vivo evaluation

Toxoplasma gondii, an intracellular parasite, has shown drug resistance and therapeutic failure in recent years. Dimedone (DIM) has been introduced as a new chemical compound with anti-bacterial and anti-cancer properties. The aim of this study was to investigate the potential protective role of DIM nanoparticles in an animal model of toxoplasmosis. Cytotoxicity of DIM on Vero cell line assessed using MTT, and the effect of DIM on Toxoplasma gondii was evaluated by counting the number of parasites compared to the control group in vitro. The rate of pathogenesis and virulence of the parasite was checked on the liver cells of the animal model using hematoxylin-eosin staining. Furthermore, various parameters indicating oxidative stress were compared in mouse liver tissue in different groups. The release of the nanoparticle form was significantly longer than the free drugs. The IC50 of Nano-DIM was 60 µM and the reduction of intracellular parasite proliferation in the group Nano-DIM and Nano-PYR (Nano-primethamine) was significantly lower than the free drugs in vitro. Histopathology examination in the groups treated with dimedone nanomedicine showed that the degree of disintegration of the epithelium of the central vein of the liver and infiltration and vacuolization of liver cells were lower compared to the toxoplasmosis group. Additionally, the level of some oxidative stress indicators was observed to be lower in the nano-treated groups compared to other groups. The results of this study showed DIM can be used as a promising compound for anti-T. gondii activity and can prevent the proliferation of it in cells.

Application of MIL-53(Al)-NH2 as a Dispersive Microsolid-Phase Extraction Material for Determination of Cyclophosphamide in Urine by High-Performance Liquid Chromatography

In this paper, an aluminum-based metal-organic framework (MIL-53(Al)-NH₂) was synthesized and employed as a well-known and efficient dispersive microsolid-phase extraction (Dμ-SPE) sorbent for reliable determination of cyclophosphamide in urine samples by the high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) technique. The synthesized MIL-53(Al)-NH₂ was characterized by FT-IR, PXRD, FE-SEM, and EDS for more details. Then, the effective parameters of the preconcentration and extraction of urinary cyclophosphamide including the amount of the solid sorbent, the pH of the sample, sample volume, extraction and desorption time, and the type and volume of elution solvent were thoroughly investigated and optimized. According to the results, a linear dynamic range of 0.14-120 μg mL^-1 with a good correlation coefficient (R ² = 0.998) and a limit of detection (LOD) of 0.05 μg mL^-1 were obtained with intra- and interday relative standard deviations (n = 9) of 3.13 and 3.99% in optimized conditions, respectively. Furthermore, the absolute recovery of urinary cyclophosphamide at three concentrations (0.5, 50.0, and 100.0 μg mL^-1) was 94.0%. Finally, the optimal condition of the developed method was successfully applied to the extraction and analysis of cyclophosphamide from the real urine samples with satisfactory recovery (94.0-97.0%) and acceptable precision (<4.1%). The findings proved that MIL-53(Al)-NH₂ can be utilized as a suitable adsorbent for highly reliable extraction of cyclophosphamide in biological matrices.

Development of a Needle Trap Device Packed with HKUST-1 Sorbent for Sampling and Analysis of BTEX in Air

In this study, we developed a needle trap device packed with HKUST-1 (Cu-based metal-organic framework) for the sampling and analysis of benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylene (BTEX) in ambient air for the first time. The HKUST-1 was synthesized via the electrochemical process. Afterwards, the adsorbent was packed into 22 gauge needles. To provide the different concentrations of BTEX, the syringe pump was connected to the glass chamber to inject a specific rate of the BTEX compounds. Design-expert software (version 7) was used to optimize the analytical parameters including breakthrough volume, desorption conditions and sampling conditions. The best desorption conditions were achieved at 548 K for 6 min, and the best sampling conditions were determined at 309 K of sampling temperature and 20 % of relative humidity. According to the results, the limit of quantification (LOQ) and limit of detection (LOD) of the developed needle trap device (NTD) were in the range of 0.52–1.41 and 0.16–0.5 mg/m3, respectively. In addition, the repeatability and reproducibility of the method were calculated to be in the range of 5.5–13.2 and 5.3–12.3 %, respectively. The analysis of needles stored in the refrigerator (>277 K) and room temperature (298 K) showed that the NTD can store the BTEX analytes for at least 10 and 6 days, respectively. Our findings indicated that the NTD packed with HKUST-1 sorbent can be used as a trustworthy and useful technique for the determination of BTEX in air.

Effect of different concentrations of substrate in microbial fuel cells toward bioenergy recovery and simultaneous wastewater treatment

Microbial fuel cells (MFC_S) is a promising and expanding technology able to eliminate various pollutants of wastewater while converting its chemical energy into power energy using biocatalysts. The potential application of double-chamber microbial fuel cell (DC-MFC) for chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal and generated power from wastewater in the different conditions is investigated. DC-MFC is operated with anaerobic sludge as an active biocatalyst in an anode section, an aerobic cathode section and a Nafion117 membrane as a separator. The performance of the bioreactor is determined with different concentrations of chemical oxygen demand (COD) loadings in the MFC process, in terms of COD removal, power generation and columbic efficiencies. The results illustrated that COD removal efficiency increased at the high concentrations of organic matter. So that at COD concentration of 2000.0 mg/L the highest COD removal efficiency (84%) was obtained. But with increasing substrate initial concentration to 10000.0 mg/L the efficiency decreased to 79%. The important outputs of the system like the highest voltage, maximum generated power, current density, and energy efficiency with the 100,000 mg/L COD are 447 mV, 50.7 mW/m², 570.0 mA/m², and 18.6%, respectively. The optical density levels increased due to bacterial growth while pH severely decreased in the anode chamber when using high-concentration substrates in the MFC.

Anodic electrosynthesis of MIL-53(Al)-N(CH2PO3H2)2 as a mesoporous catalyst for synthesis of novel (N-methyl-pyrrol)-pyrazolo[3,4-b]pyridines via a cooperative vinylogous anomeric based oxidation

In this paper, the MIL-53(Al)-NH2 metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) was prepared based on the anodic electrosynthesis under green conditions. The anodic electrosynthesis as an environmentally friendly procedure was performed in the aqueous solution, room temperature, atmospheric pressure, and in the short reaction time (30 min). Also, the employed procedure was accomplished without the need for the ex-situ salt and base/probase additives as cation source and ligand activating agent at the constant current mode (10.0 mA cm-2). The electrosynthesized MOFs was functionalized with phosphorus acid tags as a novel mesoporous catalyst. This mesoporous catalyst was successfully employed for synthesis of new series (N-methyl-pyrrol)-pyrazolo[3,4-b]pyridines by one-pot condensation reaction of 3-methyl-1-phenyl-1H-pyrazol-5-amine, 3-(1-methyl-1H-pyrrol-2-yl)-3-oxopropanenitrile and various aromatic aldehydes (mono, bis and tripodal). This catalyst proceeded the organic synthetic reaction via a cooperative vinylogous anomeric based oxidation mechanism with a marginal decreasing its catalytic activity after recycling and reusability.

Application of a fluidized three-dimensional electrochemical reactor with Ti/SnO2-Sb/β-PbO2 anode and granular activated carbon particles for degradation and mineralization of 2,4-dichlorophenol: Process optimization and degradation pathway

A three-dimensional electrochemical reactor with Ti/SnO₂-Sb/β-PbO₂ anode and granular activated carbon (3DER-GAC) particle electrodes were used for degradation of 2,4-dichlorophenol (2,4-DCP). Process modeling and optimization were performed using an orthogonal central composite design (OCCD) and genetic algorithm (GA), respectively. Ti/SnO₂-Sb/β-PbO₂ anode was prepared by electrochemical deposition method and then its properties were studied by FESEM, EDX, XRD, Linear sweep voltammetry and accelerated lifetime test techniques. The results showed that lead oxide was precipitated as highly compact pyramidal clusters in the form of β-PbO₂ on the electrode surface. In addition, the prepared anode had high stability (170 h) and oxygen evolution potential (2.32 V). A robust quadratic model (p-value < 0.0001 and R² > 0.99) was developed to predict the 2,4-DCP removal efficiency in the 3DER-GAC system. Under optimal conditions (pH = 4.98, Na₂SO₄ concentration = 0.07 M, current density = 35 mA cm^-2, GAC amount = 25 g and reaction time = 50 min), the removal efficiency of 2,4-DCP in the 3DER-GAC system and the separate electrochemical degradation process (without GAC particle electrode) were 99.8 and 71%, respectively. At a reaction time of 80 min, the TOC removal efficiencies in the 3DER-GAC and the separate electrochemical degradation system were 100 and 57.5%, respectively. Accordingly, the energy consumed in these two systems was calculated to be 0.81 and 1.57 kWh g^-1 TOC, respectively. Based on the results of LC-MS analysis, possible degradation pathways of 2,4-DCP were proposed. Trimerization and ring opening reactions were the two dominant mechanisms in 2,4-DCP degradation.

Synthesis and application of [Zr-UiO-66-PDC-SO3H]Cl MOFs to the preparation of dicyanomethylene pyridines via chemical and electrochemical methods

A metal-organic framework (MOF) with sulfonic acid tags as a novel mesoporous catalyst was synthesized. The precursor of Zr-UiO-66-PDC was synthesized both via chemical and electrochemical methods. Then, zirconium-based mesoporous metal-organic framework [Zr-UiO-66-PDC-SO3H]Cl was prepared by reaction of Zr-UiO-66-PDC and SO3HCl. The structure of [Zr-UiO-66-PDC-SO3H]Cl was confirmed by FT-IR, PXRD, FE-SEM, TEM, BET, EDX, and Mapping analysis. This mesoporous [Zr-UiO-66-PDC-SO3H]Cl was successfully applied for the synthesis of dicyanomethylene pyridine derivatives via condensation of various aldehyde, 2-aminoprop-1-ene-1,1,3-tricarbonitrile and malononitrile. At the electrochemical section, a green electrochemical method has successfully employed for rapid synthesis of the zirconium-based mesoporous metal-organic framework UiO-66-PDC at room temperature and atmospheric pressure. The synthesized UiO-66-PDC has a uniform cauliflower-like structure with a 13.5 nm mean pore diameter and 1081.6 m2 g-1 surface area. The described catalyst [Zr-UiO-66-PDC-SO3H]Cl was also employed for the convergent paired electrochemical synthesis of dihydropyridine derivatives as an environmentally friendly technique under constant current at 1.0 mA cm-2 in an undivided cell. The proposed method proceeds with moderate to good yields for the model via a cooperative vinylogous anomeric based oxidation.

Convergent Paired Electrochemical Synthesis of Azoxy and Azo Compounds: An Insight into the Reaction Mechanism

A convergent paired electrochemical method was developed for the synthesis of azoxy and azo compounds starting from the corresponding nitroarenes. We propose a unique mechanism for electrosynthesis of azoxy and azo compounds. We find that both anodic and cathodic reactions are responsible for the synthesis of these compounds. The synthesis of azoxy and azo derivatives have been successfully performed in an undivided cell, using carbon rod electrodes, by constant current electrolysis at room temperature.

Electrocatalytic degradation of diuron herbicide using three-dimensional carbon felt/β-PbO2 anode as a highly porous electrode: Influencing factors and degradation mechanisms

Traditional planar PbO₂ anodes have been used extensively for the electrocatalytic degradation process. However, by using porous PbO₂ anodes that have a three-dimensional architecture, the efficiency of the process can be significantly upgraded. In the current study, carbon felt (CF) with a highly porous structure and a conventional planar graphite sheet (G) were used as electrode substrate for PbO₂ anodes. Both CF/β-PbO₂ and G/β-PbO₂ anodes were prepared by the anodic deposition method. The main properties of the electrodes were characterized by XRD, EDX-mapping, FESEM, and BET-BJH techniques. The electrocatalytic degradation of diuron using three-dimensional porous CF/β-PbO₂ anode was modeled and optimized by a rotatable central composite design. After optimizing the process, the ability of porous CF/β-PbO₂ and planar G/β-PbO₂ anodes to degrade and mineralize diuron was compared. The electrocatalytic degradation of the diuron was well described by a quadratic model (R² > 0.99). Under optimal conditions, the kinetics of diuron removal using CF/β-PbO₂ anode was 3 times faster than the G/β-PbO₂ anode. The energy consumed for the complete mineralization of diuron using CF/β-PbO₂ anode was 2077 kWh kg^-1 TOC. However, the G/β-PbO₂ anode removed only 65% of the TOC by consuming 54% more energy. The CF/β-PbO₂ had more stability (115 vs. 91 h), larger surface area (1.6287 vs. 0.8565 m² g^-1), and higher oxygen evolution potential (1.89 vs. 1.84 V) compared to the G/β-PbO₂. In the proposed pathways for diuron degradation, the aromatic ring and groups of carbonyl, dimethyl urea, and amide were the main targets for HO^• radical attacks.

New insight into the electrochemical reduction of different aryldiazonium salts in aqueous solutions

Electrochemical reduction of different aryldiazonium salts in aqueous solution was studied in this work and it is shown that the aryldiazonium salts are converted to the corresponding aryl radical and aryl anion. The results of this research indicate that the reduction of aryldiazonium salts takes place in two single-electron steps. Our data show that when the substituted group on the phenyl ring is H, Cl, OH, NO₂, OCH₃ or SO₃⁻, the corresponding diazonium salt shows poor adsorption characteristics, but when the substituted group is methyl, the corresponding diazonium salt shows strong adsorption characteristics. In the latter case, the voltammogram exhibits three cathodic peaks. In addition, the effect of various substitutions on the aryldiazonium reduction was studied by Hammett's method. The data are show that with increasing electron withdrawing capacity of the substituent, the reduction of corresponding diazonium salt becomes easier.

Determination of halogenated hydrocarbons in urine samples using a needle trap device packed with Ni/Zn-BTC bi-MMOF via the dynamic headspace method

In this study, a nickel/zinc-BTC bi-metallic metal-organic framework (bi-MMOF) was employed as a new and efficient adsorbent in a needle trap device (NTD) for headspace (HS) sampling, extraction and analysis of halogenated hydrocarbons (trichloroethylene, tetrachloroethylene, chloroform, and tetrachloroethylene) from spiked and real urine samples. Characterization of the prepared adsorbent was accomplished by FT-IR, PXRD, EDX, elemental mapping, and FE-SEM techniques. According to experimental results, the optimal temperature and extraction time, salt content, temperature and desorption time of the response surface methodology (RSM) and Box-Behnken design (BBD) were determined to be 56 °C and 30 min, 5.5%, 350 °C and 8 min for the studied halogenated hydrocarbons, respectively. The calculated values of detection limit and quantitation limit parameters were in the range of 1.02-1.10 and 2.01-2.4.0 ng L-1, respectively. Moreover, intermediate precision and repeatability of the method were in the range of 4.90-8.20% and 1.50-4.80%, respectively. The recovery percentages of analytes were obtained to be in the range of 95.0-97.0% 10 days after the sampling and storage at 4 °C. This study showed that the proposed HS-NTD:Ni/Zn-BTC method coupled with a GC-FID can be employed as a simple, fast, and sensitive procedure for non-metabolized halogenated hydrocarbons from urine samples in biological monitoring.

Moving-bed biofilm reactor combined with three-dimensional electrochemical pretreatment (MBBR-3DE) for 2,4-D herbicide treatment: application for real wastewater, improvement of biodegradability

2,4-Dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) is a herbicide that is considered as a carcinogenic and highly toxic contaminant, and due to its biological and chemical stability, its degradation is very difficult. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate a hybrid system's efficiency of three-dimensional electrochemical (3DE) process and a moving bed biofilm reactor (MBBR) in removing 2,4-D herbicides from aqueous solutions. In this experimental study, the electrochemical degradation of 2,4-D herbicide in a 3DE process with a G/β-PbO2 anode was first investigated as a pretreatment process. Then, in the post-treatment stage, MBBR with continuous flow was used. The amount of aeration in the MBBR reactor was 4 L min-1, and the amount of dissolved oxygen (DO) was in the range of 3-5 mg L-1. The effect of various parameters such as hydraulic retention time (HRT) and filling ratio were investigated. The amount of sewage injection was set between 0.001-0.004 L min-1. Routine microbiological biochemical tests were used to detect bacteria. BOD5/COD, COD/TOC, AOS, and COS ratio parameters were used to determine the biodegradability of 2.4-D due to the effluent of the 3DE process. The results showed that with increasing current density, decreasing pH, decreasing herbicide concentration and increasing electrolysis time, the herbicide degradation efficiency increased by 3DE pretreatment process. Based on the results of MBBR post-treatment process efficiency, with increasing HRT and filling ratio, the herbicide removal efficiency increased. According to the results, the highest removal efficiencies of 2,4-D and COD herbicides were obtained during HRT of 24 h, and the filling ratio of 70% were 97.33% and 88.95%, respectively. The consortium of 2,4-D degrading bacteria identified in this study included E. coli, Enterobacter spp., Bacillus spp., Alcaligenes spp., Proteus spp., Acinetobacter spp., Pseudomonas spp., Arthrobacter, and Brevundimonas vesicularis. In the MBBR biological process, the reaction kinetics followed the Grau second-order model (R 2 = 0.98). In general, the results showed that the combined process of 3DE with G/β-PbO2 anode and MBBR biological process has relatively high efficiency in 2,4-D herbicide degradation and can be used as a suitable complementary treatment method in wastewater containing non-degradable compounds such as phenoxy herbicides, e.g., 2,4-D should be used.

Diuron degradation using three-dimensional electro-peroxone (3D/E-peroxone) process in the presence of TiO2/GAC: Application for real wastewater and optimization using RSM-CCD and ANN-GA approaches

The present study investigates the efficiency of a three-dimensional electro-peroxone (3D/E-peroxone) reactor filled with TiO₂-GAC in removing diuron from aqueous solution and in the remediation of real pesticide wastewater. The behavior of the system in terms of the effect of independent variables on diuron was investigated and optimized by RSM-CCD and ANN-GA methods. Both approaches proved to have a very good performance in the modeling of the process and determined the optimum condition of the independent variables as follows: initial pH = 10, applied current = 500 mA, supporting electrolyte = 0.07 M, ozone concentration = 10 mg L^-1, and reaction time = 10 min. The 3D/E-peroxone process achieved a synergistic effect in diuron abatement and reduced significantly energy consumption, as compared to its individual components. H₂O₂ concentration generated in the electrolysis system was notably increased in the presence of TiO₂-GAC microparticles. The BOD₅/COD ratio of the real pesticide wastewater increased from 0.049 to 0.571 within 90 min treatment. Giving to the considerable enhancement of the biodegradability of the wastewater, this study strongly suggests that the 3D/E-peroxone process can be considered as a promising pretreatment step before a biological treatment process to produce intermediates which are more easily degradable by microorganisms.

Electrodisinfection of bacteria-laden in surface water using modified Ti electrode by antimony-and nickel-doped tin oxide composite

Providing clean and safe drinking water by point of use (POU) disinfection methods has become a critical issue, especially in crises and epidemics. In this study, antimony-and nickel-doped tin oxide electrode (Ni-Sb-SnO₂) was employed as an electrode for electro-catalytic disinfection of surface water. The synthetized electrodes were characterized using scanning electron microscope, linear sweep voltammetry and X-Ray diffraction techniques. The results revealed that the highest electrochemical disinfection efficiency was achieved by the Ni-Sb-SnO₂ electrode under weak acidic conditions and its performance decreased with increasing pH towards alkaline environment. Based on the results, total coliform (TC) and fecal coliform (FC) were completely removed at current density of 0.67 mA cm^-2. Moreover, the electrochemical disinfection of microorganisms showed that the process efficiency was directly proportional to increasing time and at 0.6 C cm^-2 of charge passed, 3-log removal of the both indicators occurred after 15 min. The highest removal efficiency of TC and FC was also achieved at 8 mmol of NaCl concentration at <10 min of detention time. The results of this study depicted that the Ti/Ni-Sb-SnO₂ electrode provides higher disinfection efficiency for the removal of TC and FC compared with Ti and SS/PbO₂ electrodes. Moreover, the proposed system was able to completely eliminate heterotrophic, Streptococcus faecalis and Pseudomonas aerogenes indicators under optimal conditions. Therefore, it can be concluded that the proposed electrochemical system can be efficiency applied as a POU disinfection system for disinfection of water contaminated with microbial indicators, especially for crises and epidemics.

Nano-hydroxyapatite/polyaniline composite as an efficient sorbent for sensitive determination of the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in air by a needle trap device

Hydroxyapatite is a readily available, inexpensive, environmentally friendly adsorbent with high adsorption capacity. In this study, a polyaniline-doped nano-hydroxyapatite (PANI@HA) adsorbent was synthesized and employed in a needle trap device for the extraction of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons such as naphthalene, fluoranthene, benzo[a]anthracene, phenanthrene, and benzo[a]pyrene for the first time. The synthesized adsorbent was characterized by X-ray diffraction, field emission scanning electron microscopy, and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy analysis. Initially, effective variables such as the carryover effect, storage time, accuracy, and precision of the method were examined in the laboratory. The desorption conditions were optimized using the response surface methodology and central composite design methods. From the standpoint of quantitative parameters, the limit of detection and limit of quantitation were determined to be between 0.001 and 0.003 and 0.021 and 0.051 ng mL-1, respectively, which indicates the high sensitivity of the proposed method. Additionally, no significant changes were detected after storage of analytes inside the needle at 4 °C after 60 days. The results of this study also provide a high correlation between the results of sampling with needles containing PANI@HA and with XAD-2 adsorbent tubes (standard NIOSH 5115 method) (R 2 = 0.98). Finally, the proposed method was successfully employed in the extraction and determination of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in field (real) samples. In general, it can be concluded that a needle packed with PANI@HA is a reliable and high-performance method for sampling polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons compared to the NIOSH method.

A new electrochemical strategy for the synthesis of a new type of sulfonamide derivatives

This study is the first report of electrochemical generation of hydroxyimino-cyclohexa-dien-ylidene haloniums and their application in the synthesis of new halo-N-hydroxysulfonamide derivatives. These compounds were obtained in a one-pot process based on the reaction of halonium acceptors with arylsulfinic acids. The method is easy to carry out, as it is performed using the carbon electrodes in a simple undivided cell. The protocol has a broad substrate scope with a tolerance for a variety of functional groups. The proposed mechanism is a ping-pong type reaction mechanism, which in its first stage the halonitroarene is reduced at the cathode to related hydroxylamine and in the second stage the cathodically generated hydroxylamine by oxidation at the anode and participating in disproportionation reaction is converted to the halonium acceptor.

Electrochemical study of 4-chloroaniline in a water/acetonitrile mixture. A new method for the synthesis of 4-chloro-2-(phenylsulfonyl)aniline and N-(4-chlorophenyl)benzenesulfonamide

The electrochemical oxidation of 4-chloroaniline as a model compound in a water/acetonitrile mixture was investigated by cyclic voltammetry and differential pulse voltammetry. It was established that one-electron oxidation of 4-chloroaniline followed by disproportionation reaction affords unstable (4-iminocyclohexa-2,5-dien-1-ylidene)chloronium. In water/acetonitrile mixtures and in the absence of nucleophiles, the most likely reaction on produced chloronium is hydrolysis and p-quinoneimine formation. The electrochemical oxidation of 4-chloroaniline in the presence of arylsulfinic acids was also investigated in a water/acetonitrile mixture at a glassy carbon electrode. It was established that under these conditions, the anodically generated chloronium reacts with benzenesulfinic acid to produce the corresponding diaryl sulfone and N-phenylbenzenesulfonamide derivatives. In addition, Gaussian 09W was applied for prediction of the possible product by the calculation of natural charge, LUMO orbital energies and thermodynamic stability of intermediates and products.

Two-Phase Electrochemical Generation of Aryldiazonium Salts: Application in Electrogenerated Copper-Catalyzed Sandmeyer Reactions

The electrochemical generation of aryldiazonium salts from nitroarenes in a two-phase system (ethyl acetate/water) was reported for the first time. Some compounds including azo, azosulfone, and arylazides were prepared in good yields with good purity. Cathodically generated aryldiazoniums and anodically produced copper(Ι) ions were used to perform Sandmeyer reactions. To improve the method, an H-type self-driving cell equipped with a Zn rod as an anode was introduced and used for two-phase aryldiazonium production.

Efficient extraction of aromatic amines in the air by the needle trap device packed with the zirconium based metal-organic framework sorbent

In this study, development of a needle trap device (NTD) packed with UiO-66 adsorbent was used for the sampling of the aromatic amine compounds (including aniline, N,N-dimethylaniline and o-toluidine) followed by gas chromatography (GC) with flame-ionization detector (FID) analysis. The UiO-66 sorbent was synthesized and then packed inside a spinal needle (Gauge 22). The synthesized sorbent was characterized with the XRD, FE-SEM, EDS and FT-IR techniques. This study was conducted both in the laboratory and in the real samples. In the laboratory, the sampling parameters (such as temperature and humidity) and desorption parameters (including desorption temperature and desorption time) were optimized using Response Surface Methodology (RSM) by Central Composite Design (CCD). The results indicated that the performance of the sampling device decreased with increasing the sampling humidity and temperature. Moreover, the highest peak area responses of the studied analytes were observed at a desorption time of 3 minutes and desorption temperature of 270 °C. The values of the limit of detection (LOD) and limit of quantitation (LOQ) were in the range 0.01-0.02 and 0.03-0.05 ng mL-1, respectively. Our findings demonstrated that NTD packed with synthesized UiO-66 has good repeatability (RSD = 1.3-6.8%) and acceptable reproducibility (with three NTDs) (RSD = 1.3-9.7%). Comparison of the results between NTD-UiO-66 and NIOSH2002 showed a sufficient correlation (0.98-0.99) between two methods. Therefore, the results indicated that the NTD packed with the UiO-66 adsorbent can be used as a powerful technique for occupational and environmental monitoring.

Development of a needle trap device packed with titanium-based metal-organic framework sorbent for extraction of phenolic derivatives in air

We developed a novel method of needle trap device packed with titanium-based metal-organic framework for the extraction of phenolic derivatives in air followed by gas chromatography-flame ionization detector analysis. The synthetized adsorbent was packed inside a 22-gauge spinal needle. This method was first tested at laboratory scale, and then was used for field sampling of phenolic derivatives in air. A glass chamber placed on a heater at 60°C was used to provide different concentrations of phenolic derivatives. The desorption conditions and breakthrough volume were optimized using response surface methodology. The limit of detection and limit of quantitation of the proposed method were estimated to be in the range of 0.001-0.12 and 0.003-0.62 ng/mL, respectively, indicating a high sensitivity for the suggested sampler. Storing the packed needle trap device in a refrigerator at 4˚C for 60 days did not dramatically affect the storage stability. Our findings indicated that there was a high correlation coefficient (R²  = 0.99) between the measurement results of this method and the NIOSH recommended method (XAD-7 sorbent tube). Therefore, it can be concluded that the needle trap device packed with titanium-based metal-organic framework can be used as a efficient method for extraction of phenolic derivatives in air.

Convergent and Divergent Paired Electrodeposition of Metal-Organic Framework Thin Films

Employing the environmentally friendly methods for synthesis of the metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) is an urgent need and sustainable development in the synthesis of these compounds is essential. In this way, ignoring the counter electrode reaction is a potentially negative point from green chemistry standpoint which increases some issues like energy consumption and reaction time. We wish to introduce the "paired electrodeposition" (PED) technique as a new method for the simultaneous synthesis and deposition of the MOF thin films (MOFTFs). This protocol implements the uniform pattern of two MOFTF modified substrates by "convergent (CPED: Zn_a/Zn_c-MOFTFs) and divergent (DPED: Cu_a/Zn_c-MOFTFs) paired electrodeposition" via a one-step synthesis. With the rule of thumb, enhanced energy efficiency and atom economy, increasing electrochemical yield, time-saving along with a variety of products are advantages of this technique. Besides, the "Electrode Modification Efficiency" has introduced for the evaluation of functionality and modification efficiency of electrochemical heterogeneous systems, especially MOFTFs. To investigate this concept, we synthesized Zn₃(BTC)₂ and Cu₃(BTC)₂ as MOF models under constant current electrolysis in water and at room temperature. This work can make a breakthrough in the green synthesis of metal-organic frameworks.

Green electrochemical synthesis of silver sulfadiazine microcrystals

Electrochemical synthesis of silver sulfadiazine (AgSD) microcrystals was carried out galvanostatically in a special two-electrode cell equipped with a sacrificial silver rod anode and a stainless steel plate cathode. The cell used in this work consists of a small cylindrical chamber containing aqueous sulfadiazine/sodium nitrate as the anode compartment inside a larger cylindrical chamber containing nitric acid solution as the cathode compartment. The ionic connection of two chambers is carried out through a solvent surface layer. In this study, the effect of the experimental parameters such as applied current density and sodium nitrate concentration as well as nitric acid concentration on the yield and energy consumption of AgSD is discussed. The proposed method is fast and green and has unique features including synthesis in a single step, and no need for a metal salt.

A tunable pair electrochemical strategy for the synthesis of new benzenesulfonamide derivatives

A green, facile and tunable pair electrochemical process was developed for the synthesis of new benzenesulfonamide derivatives by using reductive controlled potential electrolysis of dinitrobenzene (DNB) in the presence of arylsulfinic acids (ASAs). In addition to the usual features associated with paired electrochemical methods, eg high energy efficient, this method has a tunable characteristic, so that, by adjusting the potential, different products can be synthesized. By applying the potential of −0.4 V vs. Ag/AgCl, N-hydroxy-N-(4-nitrophenyl)benzenesulfonamide derivatives are selectively formed, while, by applying the potential of −1.1 V vs. Ag/AgCl, the final products are N-(4-amino-3-(phenylsulfonyl)phenyl) benzenesulfonamide derivatives. This work beautifully shows the potential applications of the electrochemistry as a powerful tool for the synthesis of organic compounds.

Parameter optimization and degradation mechanism for electrocatalytic degradation of 2,4-diclorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) herbicide by lead dioxide electrodes

2,4-Dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) is one of the most commonly used herbicides in the world. In this work, the electro-catalytic degradation of 2,4-D herbicide from aqueous solutions was evaluated using three anode electrodes, i.e., lead dioxide coated on stainless steel 316 (SS316/β-PbO₂), lead dioxide coated on a lead bed (Pb/β-PbO₂), and lead dioxide coated on graphite (G/β-PbO₂). The structure and morphology of the prepared electrodes were studied by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX). The process of herbicide degradation was monitored during constant current electrolysis using cyclic voltammetry (CV). In this study, the experiments were designed based on the central composite design (CCD) and were analyzed and modeled by response surface methodology (RSM) to demonstrate the operational variables and the interactive effect of three independent variables on 3 responses. The effects of parameters including pH (3–11), current density (j = 1–5 mA cm⁻²) and electrolysis time (20–80 min) were studied. The results showed that, at j = 5 mA cm⁻², by increasing the reaction time from 20 to 80 min and decreasing the pH from 11 to 3, the 2,4-D herbicide degradation efficiency using SS316/β-PbO₂, Pb/β-PbO₂ and G/β-PbO₂ anode electrodes was observed to be 60.4, 75.9 and 89.8%, respectively. Moreover, the results showed that the highest COD and TOC removal efficiencies using the G/β-PbO₂ electrode were 83.7 and 78.5%, under the conditions pH = 3, electrolysis time = 80 min and j = 5 mA cm⁻², respectively. It was also found that G/β-PbO₂ has lower energy consumption (EC) (5.67 kW h m⁻³) compared to the two other studied electrodes (SS316/β-PbO₂ and Pb/β-PbO₂). The results showed a good correlation between the experimental values and the predicted values of the quadratic model (P < 0.05). Results revealed that the electrochemical process using the G/β-PbO₂ anode electrode has an acceptable efficiency in the degradation of 2,4-D herbicide and can be used as a proper pretreatment technique to treat wastewater containing resistant pollutants, e.g., phenoxy group herbicides (2,4-D).

Pd/Pt metallacyclopropa[60]fullerene complexes bearing versatile phosphorous ylide ligands; a comprehensive multi-spectroscopic, electrochemistry, theoretical and catalytic studies

The synthesis of new Pd/Pt metallacyclopropa[60]fullerene complexes containing unsymmetrical phosphorus ylides [Ph₂P(CH₂)_nPPh₂ = C(H)C(O)C₆H₄-p-OMe] (n = 1, (Y¹); n = 2, (Y²)) has been reported. The synthesized complexes exhibit different structures, including two P,C- chelated [(η²-C₆₀)Pd(κ²-Y¹)] (1) and [(η²-C₆₀)Pt(κ²-Y¹)] (2) complexes and two P-coordinated [(η²-C₆₀)Pd(Y²)₂] (3) and [(η²-C₆₀)Pt(Y²)₂] (4) complexes with chain structures. Characterization of all compounds was performed by multi-neclear NMR spectroscopies (¹H, ¹³C and ³¹P NMR) and other conventional techniques such as IR, UV-Vis, SEM and cyclic voltammetry (CV) analyses. In this regard, the presence of all characteristic chemical shifts in the IR and NMR spectra proposed the formation of desired products. Also, theoretical studies were used to investigate the nature of metal-ligands in all complexes. In addition, a comparison between the catalytic activity of Pd complexes 1 and 3 was evaluated in the Suzuki-Miyaura reaction of various aryl chlorides with phenylboronic acid, which revealed a meaningful difference between the catalytic activity of complexes 1 and 3.

A comprehensive study on the electrocatalytic degradation, electrochemical behavior and degradation mechanism of malachite green using electrodeposited nanostructured β-PbO2 electrodes

This work has investigated the electrocatalytic degradation of malachite green (MG) in aqueous solution with G/β-PbO₂, SS316/β-PbO₂, Ti/β-PbO₂ and Pb/β-PbO₂ electrodes. These electrodes show high oxygen evolution over-potential and excellent electrochemical degradation efficiency for organic pollutants. The optimum conditions for the degradation of MG were obtained by studying the effects of different parameters, such as initial current densities and initial MG concentration. The remaining organic compounds concentrations (color) and chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal efficiency were investigated and compared. The results indicate that the efficiency of G/β-PbO₂ electrode for both color and COD removals is more than those of other electrodes. At the optimum conditions, the color and COD removal efficiencies of MG reached up to 100% and 94%, respectively. The observed degradation rate of MG was found to vary in the order G/β-PbO₂> SS316/β-PbO₂> Ti/β-PbO₂> Pb/β-PbO₂. Moreover, in this paper, the electrochemical behavior and adsorption characteristic of MG in aqueous solutions with different pH values were studied in details at glassy carbon electrode using both constant-current coulometry and cyclic voltammetry techniques. This study has led to the proposed mechanism for the oxidation pathway of MG and determine the absorption properties of MG in acidic, neutral and basic solutions. We also proposed the mineralization pathway of MG at β-PbO₂ electrode.
