Bismuth sulfide/zinc-doped graphitic carbon nitride nanocomposite for electrochemical detection of hazardous nitric oxide

Carbon nanotube-interconnected ruthenium phthalocyanine nanoparticles used for real-time monitoring of nitric oxide released from vascular endothelial barrier model

Real-time monitoring of nitric oxide (NO) is of great importance in diagnosing the physiological functions of neurotransmission, cardiovascular, and immune systems. This study reports the carbon nanotube-interconnected ruthenium phthalocyanine nanoparticle nanocomposite and its applicability in construction of an electrochemical platform, which could real-time detect NO released from the vascular endothelial barrier (VEB) model in cell culture medium. The nanocomposite exhibits regular morphology, uniform particle size, and excellent electro-catalytic activity to electrochemical oxidation of NO. Under optimal conditions, the electrochemical device has high sensitivity (0.871 μA μM-1) and can selectively detect NO down to the concentration of 6 × 10-10 M. The human brain microvascular endothelial cells were cultured onto the Transwell support to construct the VEB model. Upon stimulated by L-arginine, NO produced by the VEB diffuses into the bottom chamber of the Transwell, and is real-time monitored by the electrochemical device. Moreover, evaluation of the NO inhibition by drug is realized using the electrochemical device-Transwell platform. This simple and sensitive platform would be of great interesting for evaluating the endothelial function or its pathological states, and screening the related drugs or chemicals.

Sensitive electrochemical measurement of nitric oxide released from living cells based on dealloyed PtBi alloy nanoparticles

Nitric oxide (NO), as a vital signaling molecule related to different physiological and pathological processes in living systems, is closely associated with cancer and cardiovascular disease. However, the detection of NO in real-time remains a difficulty. Here, PtBi alloy nanoparticles (NPs) were synthesized, dealloyed, and then fabricated to NP-based electrodes for the electrochemical detection of NO. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM), small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), and nitrogen physical adsorption/desorption show that dealloyed PtBi alloy nanoparticles (dPtBi NPs) have a porous nanostructure. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and cyclic voltammetry results exhibit that the dPtBi NP electrode possesses unique electrocatalytic features such as low charge transfer resistance and large electrochemically active surface area, which lead to its excellent NO electrochemical sensing performance. Owing to the higher density of catalytical active sites formed PtBi bimetallic interface, the dPtBi NP electrode displays superior electrocatalytic activity toward the oxidation of NO with a peak potential at 0.74 V vs. SCE. The dPtBi NP electrode shows a wide dynamic range (0.09-31.5 μM) and a low detection limit of 1 nM (3σ/k) as well as high sensitivity (130 and 36.5 μA μM^-1 cm^-2). Moreover, the developed dPtBi NP-based electrochemical sensor also exhibited good reproducibility (RSD 5.7%) and repeatability (RSD 3.4%). The electrochemical sensor was successfully used for the sensitive detection of NO produced by live cells. This study indicates a highly effective approach for regulating the composition and nanostructures of metal alloy nanomaterials, which might provide new technical insights for developing high-performance NO-sensitive systems, and have important implications in enabling real-time detection of NO produced by live cells.

Review of the Design of Ruthenium-Based Nanomaterials and Their Sensing Applications in Electrochemistry

In this review, ruthenium nanoparticles (Ru NPs)-based functional nanomaterials have attractive electrocatalytic characteristics and they offer considerable potential in a number of fields. Ru-based binary or multimetallic NPs are widely utilized for electrode modification because of their unique electrocatalytic properties, enhanced surface-area-to-volume ratio, and synergistic effect between two metals provides as an effective improved electrode sensor. This perspective review suggests the current research and development of Ru-based nanomaterials as a platform for electrochemical (EC) sensing of harmful substances, biomolecules, insecticides, pharmaceuticals, and environmental pollutants. The advantages and limitations of mono-, bi-, and multimetallic Ru-based nanocomposites for EC sensors are discussed. Besides, the relevant EC properties and analyte sensing approaches are also presented. On the basis of these insights, we highlighted recent results for synthesizing techniques and EC environmental pollutant sensors from the perspectives of diverse supports, including graphene, carbon nanotubes, silica, semiconductors, metal sulfides, and polymers. Finally, this work overviews the modern improvements in the utilization of Ru-based nanocomposites on the basis for electroanalytical sensors as well as suggestions for the field's future development.
