Examining the dynamic nature of epiphytic microalgae in the Florida Keys: What factors influence community composition?

Seasonal variation in the metabolome expression of Jania rubens (Rhodophyta) reveals eicosapentaenoic acid as a potential anticancer metabolite

Seaweeds of the intertidal zone are subjected to diverse stresses due to environmental changes in radiation, salinity, water quality, herbivore communities, etc. Thus, marine seaweeds developed various unique compounds to deal with environmental fluctuations. Therefore, they are a good source of unique novel compounds. Here, we explored the seasonal metabolomic changes in Jania rubens and found notable changes between extracts of different seasons in the metabolomic profile and in their anticancer activity. The most bioactive extract was from samples collected during the Fall season, which demonstrated an LC50 of 178.39 (± 10.02 SD) µg/ml toward Non Small Cell Lung Cancer (NSCLC) followed by the Winter season extract. The Fall and Winter extracts also displayed more resemblance in their metabolic profile relative to Spring and Summer extracts. The Fall extract was fractionated and tested for cytotoxic activity toward an array of cancer cell lines. Eventually, using a bio-guided assay and multiple fractionation steps, we isolated and identified the essential fatty acid, eicosapentaenoic acid, as the active anticancer agent, showing an LC50 of 5.23 (± 0.07 SD) µg/ml toward NSCLC. Our results emphasize the potential use of J. rubens as a source of beneficial fatty acids and stress the importance of environmental effects on metabolic constitutes.

Novel field observations of coral reef fishes feeding on epiphytic and epizoic organisms associated with the allelopathic seaweed Galaxaura divaricata

In degraded coral reef ecosystems, allelopathic macroalgae have received increasing attention from marine ecologists because their secondary metabolites (also known as allelochemicals) kill corals that grow adjacent to them and weaken the recovery of degraded reefs. One well-known coral-killing macroalga is the calcareous red seaweed Galaxaura. However, our knowledge of how coral reef fishes interact with allelopathic algae like Galaxaura is very limited. Here, we documented novel observations of feeding interactions of 17 species of coral reef fishes (herbivorous and carnivorous) with the filamentous Galaxaura divaricata on degraded lagoon patch reefs in Dongsha Atoll (South China Sea). Video analyses showed that territorial farming damselfishes (i.e., Dischistodus perspicillatus, D. prosopotaenia, Hemiglyphidodon plagiometopon, Pomacentrus grammorhynchus, P. adelus, and Neoglyphidodon nigroris) and juvenile parrotfishes (Scarus schlegeli, S. ghobban, S. rivulatus, and Chlorurus spilurus) likely used G. divaricata as a feeding substratum. Further, microscopic analyses revealed that the filamentous surface of G. divaricata harbored a wealth of epiphytic microalgae, such as filamentous cyanobacteria (i.e., Leptolyngbya, Lyngbya, Rivularia, Oscillatoria, and Stigonema), diatoms (i.e., Synedra, Nitzschia, Mastogloia, and Pleurosigma), and filamentous red algae (i.e., Heterosiphonia), suggesting that these fishes targeted the nutrient-rich microscopic epiphytes rather than the nutrient-poor host. Juvenile benthic carnivores (i.e., Labridae, Parupeneus multifasciatus, and Meiacanthus grammistes) form feeding assemblages with roving parrotfishes to feed on small invertebrates (i.e., amphipods, copepods, isopods, gastropods, and polychaetes) associated with G. divaricata. Given that coral reef fishes appear to target the epiphytes associated with Galaxaura rather than the alga itself, these observations thus substantiate the threat posed by the overgrowth of G. divaricata to coral recovery in degraded reef systems due to the lack of natural grazers.

Epiphytic phytoplankton in response to divergent air pollutants from urban and commercial zones of Chennai District, Tamil Nadu, India: A case study towards phytoplankton based Air Quality Index

Microalgae are an effective source of bioindicators to screen any changes of the natural ecosystem in the environment. With the increase in air pollution due to different potential sources, pollution monitoring stations are deployed across the nation with sophisticated analytical methodologies. However, phytoplankton can also serve as an indicator of air pollution as they possess the ability to absorb particulate contaminants. With previous studies on indicator species based on aquatic habitats, this study was carried out to comprehend the interaction between gaseous oxides of sulphur and nitrogen, particulate matter with diameter less than 10 and 2.5 μm (PM10, PM 2.5), with the population density, abundance and frequency of terrestrial epiphytic microalgae from residential and commercial areas of Chennai District, Tamil Nadu. There was a significant correlation between the members of Chlorophyceae, Bacillariophyceae and Cyanophyceae with the abovementioned air pollutants. Cluster analysis, CCA and NMDS analysis were done to find the interaction pattern. The results suggested few indicator species from genera Chlorella, Phormidium, Nitzschia, Navicula, Spirogyra and Oscillatoria. Species of Desmodesmus, Gleocapsa, Gleocyctis and Lyngbya can be considered as an addition to Palmer's list of tolerant species. During this study, the occurrence of filamentous Cladophora crispata is reported for the first time from Tamil Nadu, India. This study unveiled the list of microalgal species resistant to air pollutants from one of the highly polluted cities of India.
