Temporal and spatial variability of organotins in an intermittent Mediterranean river

On inorganic tracers of wastewater treatment plant discharges along the Marque River (Northern France)

Increase of water quality in aquatic systems has become a hot button issue in recent decades. However, with the aim to implement an effective remediation strategy, the first step is to identify the sources of diffuse and point-source pollution using several tracers. In urban areas, B isotopes, Gd enrichment, Cl^- or carbamazepine concentrations can be used as wastewater treatment plant tracers. In this study, a focus was made on the quantification of a wide variety of inorganic compounds (elements, ions, isotopic ratios) all along the Marque River, a small stream located in Northern France receiving effluents coming from seven wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). The objectives were (i) to determine the importance of the WWTPs discharge during low water events, (ii) to assess the efficiency of conventional tracers in quantifying the contribution of the WWTPs and (iii) to investigate new potential tracers less commonly used. The results have shown, through statistical analyses ANOVA (Analysis Of Variance) tests, PCA (Principal Component Analysis) and contribution calculations, that the WWTPs discharges strongly impact the water composition of all the watercourse and particularly during the first 6 km. However, due to high discharges of wastewaters not always well treated, some classical indicators (e.g. B, Rb/Sr) have shown limitations when used alone. The use of a set of relevant tracers including alkali metals could therefore be one solution for overcoming such a problem. Finally, other indicators like Rb/B or Gd/Pt ratios may also be a way to tackle this issue; they are indeed promising to discriminate the source of wastewaters.

Tributyltin in Wastewater: Influence on the Performance of Suspended Growth Biological Processes

The aim of this study was to evaluate the potential effect of tributyltin (TBT) on the performance of suspended-growth biological processes. The influence of TBT was evaluated for (i) the endogenous and exogenous respirations of heterotrophic micro-organisms in laboratory-scale batch reactors, taken from a municipal wastewater treatment plant and (ii) chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal, sludge production and oxygen consumption of a pilot-sale membrane bioreactor (MBR) system inoculated with heterotrophic micro-organisms taken from a MBR system. The batch experiments showed that the presence of TBT was likely to modify the activity of bacterial populations in endogenous conditions. The increase in endogenous oxygen needs suggested an increase in the maintenance requirements, essentially to manage the chemical stress induced by the presence of TBT. If the addition of TBT did not perturb COD removal in an MBR system, it limited sludge production and increased oxygen requirements; it is assumed that these modifications were linked with the necessity for the biomass to adapt in this stressful environment, as reflected by an increase in the maintenance requirements. These results emphasised that the respiratory activity of the bacterial cultures was modified by the presence of TBT, in the sense that an excess of oxygen was required to adapt to this chemical stress.

Occurrence of organotins in the aquatic environment during an operating cycle of the Three Gorges Reservoir, China

Organotins (OTs) pollution in the aquatic environment of the Three Gorges Reservoir (TGR) was assessed during the reservoir's operating cycle. Butyltins (BTs) and phenyltins (PhTs) in the water phase and suspended particulate matter (SPM) at different water levels were analysed. It was found that the distribution of OTs in the surface and bottom water phases were similar, with the dominant OTs being BTs at the low water level and PhTs at the high water level. The detection rates and concentrations of OTs in the water phase at the high water level were both higher than those at the low water level, with most OTs being monobutyltin (MBT) at the low water level and monophenyltin (MPhT) at the high water level. The concentrations of OTs in SPM at the low water level were higher than those at the high water level, and BTs, especially dibutyltin (DBT) and tributyltin (TBT), were the predominant OTs whether surface or bottom layer at each water level. The BTs and SPM concentrations had a significant positive relationship in all samples, indicating that the SPM concentration would determine the distribution of BTs in the aquatic environment of the TGR region (TGRR). The difference in the distribution of OTs at the different water levels indicated that the hydrological and hydraulic behaviour of the TGR influences OTs transport in the aquatic environment of the TGRR.

Organotins' fate in lagoon sewage system: dealkylation and sludge sorption/desorption

Organotin compounds (OTs) have been widely used for their biocidal properties and as stabilizers in various industrial applications. Due to their high toxicity, organotins are subject to many studies regarding their behavior in wastewater treatment plant and aquatic environment. However, few studies are available regarding their behavior in lagoon sewage system, although such treatment is commonly used for sewage treatment in low-population areas. The present study aimed at studying the fate of organotins (monobutyltin (MBT), dibutyltin (DBT), and tributyltin (TBT)) in lagoon sewage system. Short-term experiments, carried out at lab scale, consisted in sampling sludge from aerobic stabilization ponds, and then quantifying sorption and desorption of the different organotin species, as well as their respective transformation, under defined operating conditions (e.g., tributyltin spike and dilution) simulating possible change in the surrounding environment of sludge in the lagoon. Results established that a very important percentage of the OTs was localized in the solid phase of the sludge (more than 98 %), whatever the operating conditions may be; however, transformation and locations of the three OT species differed according to the different conditions of sludge dilution, TBT spiking, and test duration. After dilution of lagoon sludge, TBT desorption from sludge was observed; it was supposed that dealkylation of TBT after desorption occurred rapidly and increased dissolved MBT and DBT in liquid phase; MBT sorbed subsequently on solid phase. The nature of the diluent (i.e., tap water or saline solution) appeared to slightly influence the sludge behavior. After TBT spiking, TBT was supposed to be rapidly sorbed but also transformed in DBT and MBT that would as well sorbed on the sludge, which explained the decrease of these species in the liquid phase. Tests aimed at studying long-term effect of TBT spiking demonstrated that the sorbed species could be remobilized and transformed after a dilution.

Assessment of organotin and tin-free antifouling paints contamination in the Korean coastal area

Twelve organotins (methyl-, octyl-, butyl-, and phenyl-tin), and eight tin-free antifouling paints and their degradation products were measured in marine sediments from the Korean coastal area, and Busan and Ulsan bays, the largest harbor area in Korea. The total concentration of tin-free antifouling paints was two- to threefold higher than the total concentration of organotins. Principal component analysis was used to identify sites with relatively high levels of contamination in the inner bay area of Busan and Ulsan bays, which were separated from the coastal area. In Busan and Ulsan bays, chlorothalonil and DMSA were more dominant than in the coastal area. However, Sea-Nine 211 and total diurons, including their degradation products, were generally dominant in the Korean coastal area. The concentrations of tin and tin-free compounds were significantly different between the east and west coasts.

Occurrence of organotin compounds in river sediments under the dynamic water level conditions in the Three Gorges Reservoir Area, China

The Three Gorges Project is the largest hydro project in the world, and the water level of the Three Gorges Reservoir (TGR) is dynamic and adjustable with the aim of flood control and electrical power generation. It is necessary to investigate the pollutants and their underlying contamination processes under dynamic water levels to determine their environmental behaviors in the Three Gorges Reservoir Area (TGRA). Here, we report the assessment of organotin compounds (OTs) pollution in the river sediments of the TGRA. Surface sediment samples were collected in the TGRA at low and high water levels. Tributyltin (TBT), triphenyltin (TPhT), and their degradation products in sediments were quantified by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Butyltins (BTs) and phenyltins (PhTs) were detected in sediments, and BTs predominated over PhTs in the whole study area under dynamic water level conditions. The concentrations of OTs in sediments varied markedly among locations, and significant concentrations were found in river areas with high levels of boat traffic and wastewater discharge. Sediments at all stations except Cuntan were lightly contaminated with TBT, and total organic carbon (TOC) was a significant factor affecting the fate of TBT in the TGRA. The butyltin and phenyltin degradation indices showed no recent inputs of TBT or TPhT into this region, with the exception of fresh TPhT input at Xiakou Town. Shipping activity, wastewater discharge, and agriculture are the most likely sources of OTs in the TGRA.

Is reproduction of the snail Physella acuta affected by endocrine disrupting compounds? An in situ bioassay in three Iberian basins

An in situ bioassay was conducted in three Iberian basins (Ebro, Llobregat and Júcar Rivers) to study the reproductive effects on the freshwater snail Physella acuta. Adult individuals were transplanted in specially designed cylindrical cages. Endpoints included mortality, number of eggs and clutches, number of eggs per clutch and embryo development after 8 days. The results were contrasted with laboratory controls. Significant changes in P. acuta reproduction parameters were detected in all of the rivers: the number of clutches or eggs per snail decreased in the Ebro and Llobregat basins downstream but the number of eggs per clutch increased. The complete development of snails was delayed at some sites downstream in the Júcar and the Ebro basins. The results were contrasted with concentrations of Endocrine Disrupting Compounds (EDCs) and their Estrogenic Equivalent Quotients (EEQs). Positive relationships (Pearson correlations) were identified between the number of eggs per clutch and the total EDC concentration, bisphenol A (BPA) and their EEQs, lipid regulators and diuretics. These endocrine-disrupting chemicals may constitute a toxicological risk for the reproductive performance of snails in the studied basins.
