Abstract
Selective aerogel has become an attractive adsorbent for removing oil and organic contaminants due to its low density and excellent adsorption capacity. However, aerogels usually use non-sustainable or expensive nanomaterials and require complicated fabrication processes. Herein, using low-cost lignin reclaimed from the biorefinery waste stream as the starting material, we fabricated a highly porous, mechanically strong, and stable aerogel via a simple and one-step method under mild conditions. This aerogel exhibits a controllable micropore structure and achieves quick and efficient adsorption for oil (435% g/g), as well as toxic solvents such as THF (365% g/g). The selective and stable adsorbent can be reused multiple times and the oil adsorption capacity after 5 cycles remained at 89%. This highly efficient, mechanically strong, stable, and regenerable aerogel is a potential candidate for multiple applications such as cleaning up organic contaminants, oil remediation, and oil/water separation. Meanwhile, it also employs a "waste-treat-waste" concept by adding extra value to the biorefinery process for high-efficiency circular bioeconomy.

Abstract
Herein, the synthesis of hydrophobic macroinimer-based hybrid sorbents and their use in the removal of organic solvents from wastewater is explored. Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), 4,-4'-azobis-4-cyanopentanoyl chloride (ACPC), and methacryloyl chloride were reacted via bulk condensation polymerization to synthesize the macroinimer. The organogel systems were then prepared with macroinimer using different acrylic monomers of methyl acrylate, ethyl acrylate, and butyl acrylate without any additional crosslinker and initiator. The structural properties of the obtained final products were characterized by FT-IR, 1H-NMR, and TGA. The effect of alkyl chain length and macroinimer moieties in the organogel networks, as well as the swelling capacities of the prepared gels, was evaluated for different organic solvents and oils. The maximum solvent absorbencies of macroinimer-based organogels were determined as 85.3%, 100.9%, 1422.1%, 1660.0%, 3809.3%, and 5032.2% for diesel oil, gasoline, acetone, benzene, tetrahydrofuran (THF), and dichloromethane (DCM), respectively. Furthermore, adsorption-desorption kinetics, selective absorption from oil/water mixtures, temperature effect on the absorption capacity, and reusability tests were investigated. Obtained results showed that the prepared organogels possessed high swelling, efficient absorption capacity, and good oil separation performance in the removal of organic solvents from wastewater. The temperature-dependent absorption study shows no significant change in absorption capacity. Thus, the prepared macroinimer-based organogels in the present study demonstrate potential as prospective sorbents for organic pollutant cleanup from wastewater.

Abstract
Molecular self-assembly is a fascinating process which has become an area of great interest in supramolecular chemistry, as it leads in certain cases to molecular gels. Organogels formulated from low molecular weight compounds (LMWOGs) have attracted much interest in the past decades due to their applications as new soft materials. Herein, we report on the ability of the cyclic pseudopeptide cyclo-[-(d-Phe-azaPhe-Ala)2-] (2) to self-assemble in some aromatic solvents and to form organogels driven by non-covalent forces, mainly hydrogen bonding and π-stacking interactions. Comprehensive FTIR and NMR studies emphasized that this cyclic aza-peptide adopts a β-turn conformation at low concentration in toluene, while an equilibrium between the monomeric states (intramolecular forces) and the supramolecular structures (intra- and intermolecular forces) is established at high concentration (gel state). Rheological investigations of the organogels highlight the dependence of their stiffness (up to ∼4 kPa) and sol/gel transition temperatures (up to 100 °C) as a function of the solvent and concentration of gelator used. The formulation of fibrous structures confirmed the phenomenon of self-assembly. Finally, we found that cyclo-[-(d-Phe-azaPhe-Ala)2-] is an effective organogelator for application in phase selective gelation (PSG) of organic solvents from aqueous/organic mixtures with recovery percents up to 96%.

Abstract
This article displays an efficient and cost effective technique for the removal of unleaded gasoline from water. Multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were used as the sorbent material. Nanotubes were synthesized according to a well-known procedure and successfully used avoiding cumbersome purifications from traces of catalyst. A series of lab-scale experiments was performed on dispersions of commercial unleaded gasoline (20 mL) in water (30 mL), which were subjected to the action of variable amounts of MWCNTs at room temperature. Physicochemical characteristics and sorbent capacity of nanotubes were investigated by thermal analysis and FT-IR spectroscopy. The highest percentage of removed unleaded gasoline was obtained using small amounts (0.7 g) of MWCNTs, over very short stirring times (5 min). The composition of residual organic materials in water was investigated by 1H and 13C high-resolution NMR spectroscopy, which confirmed the almost complete removal of unleaded gasoline hydrocarbon components from polluted waters.

Abstract
Nowadays, physical absorption has become a feasible method offering an efficient and green route to remove organic pollutants from the industrial wastewater. Inspired by polydopamine (PDA) chemistry, one-dimensional PDA-functionalized multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT-PDA) were creatively introduced into graphene aerogel framework to synthesize a robust graphene/MWCNT-PDA composite aerogel (GCPCA). The whole forming process needed no additional reducing agents, significantly reducing the contamination emissions to the environment. The GCPCA exhibited outstanding repeatable compressibility, ultralight weight, as well as hydrophobic nature, which were crucial for highly efficient organic pollution absorption. The MWCNTs in moderate amounts can provide the composite aerogels with desirable structure stability and extra specific surface area. Meanwhile, the eventual absorption performance of GCPCAs can be improved by optimizing the microporous structure. In particular, a novel "cabbagelike" hierarchical porous structure was obtained as the prefreezing temperature was decreased to -80 °C. The miniaturization of pore size around the periphery of GCPCA enhanced the capillary flow in aerogel channels, and the super-absorption capacity for organic solvents was up to 501 times (chloroform) its own mass. Besides, the GCPCAs exhibited excellent reusable performance in absorption-squeezing, absorption-combustion, and absorption-distillation cycles according to the characteristic of different organic solvents. Because of the viable synthesis method, the resulting GCPCAs with unique performance possess broad and important application prospects, such as oil pollution cleanup and treatment of chemical industrial wastewater.

Abstract
When crude oil samples were shaken (200 rpm) in seawater samples from the Arabian Gulf at 30 °C, usually oil-gels were produced spontaneously leaving the water quite clear. The gelators could probably be based on cholesteryl derivatives. Microscopic examination of the established gels revealed nanofibrellar structures similar to those described by earlier workers for artificially synthesized gelators. Communities of bacteria including prosthetic and stalked members as well as oil-degrading bacteria were recorded in such gels. Chemical analysis revealed that 88.5% of the oil entrapped by gelation was biodegraded after 40 days at 30 °C. Individual bacterial species isolated from the oil-gels biodegraded in batch cultures between 17.8 and 33.3% of the oil added at time zero in 12 days at 30 °C. Gelation is a promising approach, not only for clean, physical removal of oil spilled in aquatic habitats, as so far suggested, but also in its effective microbiological biodegradation, as the current study revealed.

Abstract
Organic-inorganic hybrid gels were synthesized by the condensation of a linear aliphatic diol (1,8-octanediol) and altering the chain length of the alkyltriethoxysilanes (from ethyltriethoxysilane to hexadecyltrimethoxysilane) through a bulk polymerization process without using any initiator, activator, catalyst, or solvent for the selective removal of oils from water. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and solid-state (13)C and (29)Si cross-polarization magic-angle spinning nuclear magnetic resonance (CPMAS NMR) were used for the structural analysis of hybrid gels. Thermal properties of the hybrid gels were determined by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Oil absorbency of organic-inorganic hybrid gels was determined by oil absorption tests. The results showed that hybrid gels have high and fast absorption capacities and excellent reusability. Good selectivity, high thermal stability, low density, and excellent recyclability for the oil removal give the material potential applications.

Abstract
In this study, a series of different molecular weights of poly(tetrahydrofuran) (PTHF), which is one of the most important commercial polymers around the world, was condensed with tris[3-(trimethoxysilyl)propyl]isocyanurate (ICS) to generate a cross-linked 3-dimensional network in order to obtain organic solvent/oil sorbents having high swelling capacity. The prepared sorbents show high and fast swelling capacity in oils such as dichloromethane (DCM), tetrahydrofuran (THF), acetone, t-butyl methyl ether (MTBE), gasoline, euro diesel, and crude oil. The recovery of the absorbed oils from contaminated surfaces, especially from water, and the regeneration of the sorbents after several applications are effective. The characterization and thermal properties of the sorbents are identified by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), solid-state (13)C and (29)Si cross-polarization magic angle spinning (CPMAS) nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermal gravimetric analyses (TGA), respectively. The new usage area of PTHF is emerged by the preparation of PTHF-based network structure with high oil absorption capacity and having excellent reusability as an oil absorbent for the removal of organic liquids from the spill site.

Abstract
Organogels prepared with vegetable oils as the liquid organic phase present an excellent platform for the controlled delivery of hydrophobic guest molecules. We disclose a graft copolymer comprised of a poly(L-serine) backbone linked to alkane side-chains by hydrolytically susceptible ester bonds, that is capable of gelating edible safflower oil. The thermoresponsive organogel formed, which is non-cytotoxic, is capable of withholding guest molecules before undergoing targeted disassembly upon incubation in solutions of acidic pH, permitting the directed release of payload molecules. The presented material offers an extremely promising candidate for the controlled delivery of hydrophobic agents within acidic environments, such as cancer tumour sites.

Abstract
In this study, reusable poly(alkoxysilane) organogels with high absorption capacities were synthesized by the condensation of a cyclo aliphatic glycol (UNOXOL™) and altering the chain length of the alkyltriethoxysilanes. The structural and thermal properties of cross-linked poly(alkoxysilane) polymers were determined by FTIR, solid-state (13)C and (29)Si CPMAS NMR and TGA. The oil absorbency of poly(alkoxysilane)s was determined through oil absorption tests, absorption and desorption kinetics. Results showed that the highest oil absorbency capacities were found to be 295% for hexane, 389% for euro diesel, 428% for crude oil, 652% for gasoline, 792% for benzene, 792% for toluene, 868% for tetrahydrofuran, and 1060% for dichloromethane for the poly(alkoxysilane) gels based on UNOXOL™ and dodecyltriethoxysilane. Owing to their hydrophobic structure, the poly(alkoxysilane) organogels can selectively absorb crude oil from water. The reusability of the absorbents was quantitatively investigated, demonstrating that absorbents can be used effectively at least nine times.

Supramolecular phase-selective gelation by peptides bearing side-chain azobenzenes: effect of ultrasound and potential for dye removal and oil spill remediation. Int J Mol Sci 2015; 16:11766-84. Abstract
Phase selective gelation (PSG) of organic phases from their non-miscible mixtures with water was achieved using tetrapeptides bearing a side-chain azobenzene moiety. The presence of the chromophore allowed PSG at the same concentration as the minimum gelation concentration (MGC) necessary to obtain the gels in pure organic phases. Remarkably, the presence of the water phase during PSG did not impact the thermal, mechanical, and morphological properties of the corresponding organogels. In the case of miscible oil/water mixtures, the entire mixture was gelled, resulting in the formation of quasi-hydrogels. Importantly, PSG could be triggered at room temperature by ultrasound treatment of the mixture or by adding ultrasound-aided concentrated solution of the peptide in an oil-phase to a mixture of the same oil and water. Moreover, the PSG was not affected by the presence of salts or impurities existing in water from natural sources. The process could be scaled-up, and the oil phases (e.g., aromatic solvents, gasoline, diesel fuel) recovered almost quantitatively after a simple distillation process, which also allowed the recovery and reuse of the gelator. Finally, these peptidic gelators could be used to quantitatively remove toxic dyes from aqueous solutions.
