Phosphorus retention and fractionation in an eutrophic wetland: A one-year mesocosms experiment under fluctuating flooding conditions

Leaching and fractionation of phosphorus in intensive greenhouse vegetable production soils

Greenhouse vegetable production systems use excessive phosphorus (P) fertilizer. This study is set out to look into the P fractionation, mobility, and risk of P leaching in ten greenhouse soils. The mean P concentrations in leachates varied from 0.4 to 1.6 mg l-1 (mean of 30 days of soil leaching). Between 5.7 and 31.0 mg kg-1 of P was leached from soils during 30 days of column leaching. Organic matter (OM) and Olsen-extractable P (Olsen P) correlated strongly with cumulative P leached after 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, and 30 days of leaching. The high correlation between OM and Olsen P with cumulative P leached at 5 days of leaching suggests that in future leaching experiments, the leaching period should be extended to 5 days of leaching. The first two P fractions correlated significantly with the total P leached in the primary days of leaching. The pH had little effect on P leaching but had a significant impact on soluble and exchangeable P fraction, suggesting that P mobility would increase in these calcareous greenhouse vegetable soils as pH rose. The calculated change point (194 mg kg-1) was high, indicating that a high percentage (40%) of the studied greenhouse soils had exceeded the change point. In conclusion, due to the high degree of P saturation and change point in greenhouse vegetable soils, P mobilization is a significant risk, and the findings can be used to provide future direction for fertilizing greenhouse vegetable soils.

The ppk-expressing transgenic rice floating bed improves P removal in slightly polluted water

With significant economic advantages, the plant floating bed has been widely utilized in the ecological remediation of eutrophic water because of the excessive phosphorus (P) and nitrogen discharge in China. Previous research has demonstrated that polyphosphate kinase (ppk)-expressing transgenic rice (Oryza sativa L. ssp. japonica) (ETR) can increase the P absorption capacity to support rice growth and boost rice yield. In this study, the floating beds of ETR with single copy line (ETRS) and double copy line (ETRD) are built to investigate their capacity to remove aqueous P in slightly polluted water. Compared with the wild type Nipponbare (WT) floating bed, the ETR floating beds greatly reduce the total P concentration in slightly polluted water though the ETR floating beds have the same removal rates of chlorophyll-a, NO3--N, and total nitrogen in slightly polluted water. The P uptake rate of ETRD on the floating bed is 72.37% in slightly polluted water, which is higher than that of ETRS and WT on the floating beds. Polyphosphate (polyP) synthesis is a critical factor for the excessive phosphate uptake of ETR on the floating beds. The synthesis of polyP decreases the level of free intracellular phosphate (Pi) in ETR on the floating beds, simulating the phosphate starvation signaling. The OsPHR2 expression in the shoot and root of ETR on the floating bed increased, and the corresponding P metabolism gene expression in ETR was changed, which promoted Pi uptake by ETR in slightly polluted water. The Pi accumulation further promoted the growth of ETR on the floating beds. These findings highlight that the ETR floating beds, especially ETRD floating bed, have significant potential for P removal and can be exploited as a novel method for phytoremediation in slightly polluted water.

Effects of climate changes on net primary productivity variation in the marsh area of the Sanjiang Plain

The Sanjiang Plain includes the largest freshwater marsh in China, playing an important role in regional carbon cycle. As an important indicator of carbon cycle, the net primary productivity (NPP) is a crucial index for estimating the carbon storage of marshy wetlands. Investigating the association between climate factors and NPP variation quantitatively is of great significance for estimating carbon sequestration of marsh. Based on NPP data and climatic data from 1954 to 2014, the spatiotemporal change of NPP in marsh area was analyzed and its association with climate factors was investigated in the Sanjiang Plain in this study. The results indicated that the NPP showed an increase trend in the marsh area of the Sanjiang Plain in the past six decades. Temperate growth made the largest contribution to the NPP increase among the main climate factors in the last six decades, followed by CO2 concentration. Solar Radiation had the largest explanatory power on the spatial distribution of NPP among three climate factors before 1985. After 1985, temperature played an important role in leading the NPP distribution. Results also showed that the explanatory power of interactions between climate factors was stronger than that of single factor. Our results highlight the asymmetric effects of interactions between climate factors on marsh vegetation, which should be adequately considered in estimating carbon sequestration in marsh area in the Sanjiang Plain.

Trends in the Recent Evolution of Coastal Lagoons and Lakes in Galicia (NW Iberian Peninsula)

Coastal lagoons are habitats of great environmental value. However, they are currently subject to major threats, particularly due to increasing sea levels. This study aims to identify changes—both natural and induced by anthropic activity—and their impact on the recent evolution of three different types of coastal lagoons in Galicia (Louro, Vixán, and Xuño). The application of information obtained through laser imaging detection and ranging (LiDAR) techniques suggests that the outer limits of the three lagoon systems have not experienced any relevant changes in the last 60 years (i.e., no occupation of the lagoon area has been identified). However, the internal configuration of these wetland areas has experienced some alterations. A generalized increase in the area occupied by macrophytic communities (Phragmites australis, Scirpus maritimus, Juncus maritimus, etc.) has been observed. Image interpretation by geographic information systems (GIS) and field surveys suggest that the area currently occupied by macrophytes experienced a 7% to 63% increase at the expense of the free water body. This loss of flooded area is consistent with the increase in sedimentation rates associated with the convergence of several causes, such as the abandonment of traditional macrophyte biomass harvesting and agricultural activities around the lagoons, the expansion of riparian forests, and sediment contributions by erosion due to recurrent forest fires within the drainage basins of each lagoon. Finally, water and sediment composition suggest that, of the three studied lagoons, two of them (Louro and Vixán) are included within the definition of “coastal lagoons” (habitat code 1150) by the Habitats Directive (Directive 92/43/EEC), while the Xuño lagoon should be considered a “natural eutrophic lake” (habitat code 3150).

Hydrogeological modelling for the watershed management of the Mar Menor coastal lagoon (Spain)

The Mar Menor is the largest lagoon along the Spanish Mediterranean coast. It suffers from eutrophication and algal blooms associated with intensive agricultural activities and urban pressure in the surrounding Campo de Cartagena plain. A balanced discharge of groundwater, carrier of algal nutrients such as nitrate, is essential to ensure the integrity of the coastal lagoon and the availability of groundwater resources inland. We here present a 3D hydrogeological model of the unconfined Quaternary aquifer that discharges into the lagoon. The model couples both surface water balance and groundwater dynamics and has been calibrated to available data in the period 2000-2016. The calibrated model allows understanding of the current state of the aquifer and its link to the lagoon. The potential discharge has been quantified in both space and time and falls between 69.5 and 84.9 hm³/yr during dry and wet periods, respectively (with values of nitrate discharge of 11.4-11.8 Mkg/yr in the absence of aquifer sink terms, e.g., leakage to deeper aquifers and pumping from groundwater wells). The predictive capabilities of the calibrated model can be used to test the impact of different integrated management scenarios on the surface-groundwater dynamics of the catchment. Three plausible management scenarios are proposed that include localized and distributed groundwater pumping (drains and groundwater wells, respectively). Results show the effectiveness of the scenarios in reducing the groundwater and nitrate discharge into the lagoon. The disadvantages of the proposed scenarios, including potential seawater intrusion, need to be balanced with their relative merits for the sustainable development of the region and the survival of the Mar Menor ecosystem. The modelling approach proposed provides a valuable tool for the integrated and holistic management of the Campo de Cartagena-Mar Menor catchment and should be of great interest to similar hydrological systems with high ecological value.

Phytoremediation potential and control of Phragmites australis as a green phytomass: an overview

Phragmites australis (common reed) is one of the most extensively distributed emergent plant species in the world. This plant has been used for phytoremediation of different types of wastewater, soil, and sediments since the 1970s. Published research confirms that P. australis is a great accumulator for different types of nutrients and heavy metals than other aquatic plants. Therefore, a comprehensive review is needed to have a better understanding of the suitability of this plant for removal of different types of nutrients and heavy metals. This review investigates the existing literature on the removal of nutrients and heavy metals from wastewater, soil, and sediment using P. australis. In addition, after phytoremediation, P. australis has the potential to be used for additional benefits such as the production of bioenergy and animal feedstock due to its specific characteristics. Determination of adaptive strategies is vital to reduce the invasive growth of P. australis in the environment and its economic effects. Future research is suggested to better understand the plant's physiology and biochemistry for increasing its pollutant removal efficiency.

Efficiency of nitrogen and phosphorus removal by six macrophytes from eutrophic water

Increased nitrogen and phosphorus pollution causes eutrophication in water bodies. Using aquatic plants to remove nutrients from water is an attractive phytoremediation. It is a cost-effective, environment-friendly, and efficient way that reduces water body eutrophication by the plant. It is important to choose suitable macrophytes to remove excess N and P under different nutrient conditions. In this study, six macrophyte species (Polygonum orientale, Juncus effuses, Iris pseudocorus, Phragmites australis, Iris sanguinea, Typha orientalis) were tested. Simulation experiment was conducted under five N and P levels. The removal rate, relative growth rate, and the dynamic nutrition concentration of cultivated solution were investigated. Of all the treatment, a 23-95% reduction in N removal and a 29-92% reduction in P removal were recorded. The results showed I. sanguinea is a promising species to treat various eutrophic waters and the other five species can be used specifically to treat certain types of water. The data provided a theoretical guidance to plant species selection for phytoremediation of polluted water bodies for the purpose of water quality improvement around the different reservoir in northern China.
