The influence of decreased hydraulic retention time on the performance and stability of co-digestion of sewage sludge with grease trap sludge and organic fraction of municipal waste

Integration of Digestate-Derived Biochar into the Anaerobic Digestion Process through Circular Economic and Environmental Approaches-A Review

The growing energy consumption and the need for a circular economy have driven considerable interest in the anaerobic digestion (AD) of organic waste, offering potential solutions through biogas and digestate production. AD processes not only have the capability to reduce greenhouse gas emissions but also contribute to the production of renewable methane. This comprehensive review aims to consolidate prior research on AD involving different feedstocks. The principles of AD are explored and discussed, including both chemical and biological pathways and the microorganisms involved at each stage. Additionally, key variables influencing system performance, such as temperature, pH, and C/N ratio are also discussed. Various pretreatment strategies applied to enhance biogas generation from organic waste in AD are also reviewed. Furthermore, this review examines the conversion of generated digestate into biochar through pyrolysis and its utilization to improve AD performance. The addition of biochar has demonstrated its efficacy in enhancing metabolic processes, microorganisms (activity and community), and buffering capacity, facilitating Direct Interspecies Electron Transfer (DIET), and boosting CH4 production. Biochar also exhibits the ability to capture undesirable components, including CO2, H2S, NH3, and siloxanes. The integration of digestate-derived biochar into the circular economy framework emerges as a vital role in closing the material flow loop. Additionally, the review discusses the environmental benefits derived from coupling AD with pyrolysis processes, drawing on life cycle assessment investigations. Techno-economic assessment (TEA) studies of the integrated processes are also discussed, with an acknowledgment of the need for further TEA to validate the viability of integrating the biochar industry. Furthermore, this survey examines the techno-economic and environmental impacts of biochar production itself and its potential application in AD for biogas generation, aiming to establish a more cost-effective and sustainable integrated system.

Synergistic effect and microbial community structure of waste-activated sludge and kitchen waste solids residue mesophilic anaerobic co-digestion

Anaerobic co-digestion was conducted on the solid residues after three-phase separation of kitchen waste (KWS) and waste-activated sludge (WAS), the synergistic effects and process performance were studied during co-digestion at different ratios of KWS to WAS. KWS and WAS mix ratios of 0:1, 1:4, 1:3, 1:2, 1:1, 2:1, 3:1, 4:1 and 1:0 (based on TS). The results showed that a ratio of KWS to WAS of 1:1 got a very high methane recovery with a methane yield of 310.45 ± 30.05 mL/g VSadded. The highest concentration of free ammonia among all reaction systems was only 70.23 ± 5.53 mg/L, which was not enough to produce ammonia inhibition in the anaerobic co-digestion system. However, when the KWS content exceeded 50%, methane inhibition and prolongation of the lag phase were observed due to the accumulation of volatile fatty acids (VFAs), and during the lag phase. Microbial community analysis showed that various bacterial groups involved in acid production and hydrolysis were mainly dominated by phylum Firmicutes, Chloroflexi, Proteobacteria and Bacteroidetes. Hydrogenotrophic methanogen was found to dominate all archaeal communities in the digesters. Co-digestion of KWS with WAS significantly increased the relative abundance of Methanobacterium compared with anaerobic digestion of WAS alone.

Improvement of Asterarcys quadricellulare biomass solubilization and subsequent biogas production via pretreatment approaches: structural changes and kinetic modeling evaluation

This study investigated the effect of enzymatic and hydrothermal pretreatment approaches on the solubilization of organic matter, structure, and biogas yield from microalgal biomass. The soluble chemical oxygen demand (sCOD) concentration increased by 1.21-3.30- and 5.54-6.60-fold compared to control by enzymatic and hydrothermal pretreatments respectively. The hydrothermal pretreatment affected the structural changes in the microalgal biomass markedly; nonetheless, increased enzymatic concentration also had a definite effect on it as determined by qualitative approaches like scanning electron microscopy and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. Also, the hydrothermal pretreatment (100 °C for 30 min) resulted in the highest biogas production potential (P) of 765.37 mLg^-1 VS at a maximum biogas production rate (R_m) of 22.66 mLg^-1 day^-1 with a very short lag phase (λ) of 0.07 days. The biogas production of pretreated microalgal biomass particularly at higher enzyme dose (20%, 24 h) and higher hydrothermal pretreatment temperature (120 °C, 30 min) showed a significant but weak correlation (R = 0.53) with sCOD, thus demonstrating that the less organic matter was used up for the biogas production. The modified Gompertz model explained the anaerobic digestion of microalgal biomass more accurately and had a better fit to the experimental data comparatively because of the low root mean square error (3.259-16.728), residual sum of squares (78.887-177.025), and Akaike's Information Criterion (38.605-62.853).

A Concise Review on the Potential Applications of Rugulopteryx okamurae Macroalgae

The brown macroalgae of the species Rugulopteryx okamurae has reached European waters and the Strait of Gibraltar as an invasive species. The proliferation and colonization of the species in subtidal and intertidal zones of these regions imposes significant threats to local ecosystems and additionally represents a significant socioeconomic burden related to the large amounts of biomass accumulated as waste. As a way to minimize the effects caused by the accumulation of algae biomass, investigations have been made to employ this biomass as a raw material in value-added products or technologies. The present review explores the potential uses of R. okamurae, focusing on its impact for biogas production, composting, bioplastic and pharmaceutical purposes, with potential anti-inflammatory, antibacterial and α-glucosity inhibitory activities being highlighted. Overall, this species appears to present many attributes, with remarkable potential for uses in several fields of research and in various industries.

Principles, Advances, and Perspectives of Anaerobic Digestion of Lipids

Several problems associated with the presence of lipids in wastewater treatment plants are usually overcome by removing them ahead of the biological treatment. However, because of their high energy content, waste lipids are interesting yet challenging pollutants in anaerobic wastewater treatment and codigestion processes. The maximal amount of waste lipids that can be sustainably accommodated, and effectively converted to methane in anaerobic reactors, is limited by several problems including adsorption, sludge flotation, washout, and inhibition. These difficulties can be circumvented by appropriate feeding, mixing, and solids separation strategies, provided by suitable reactor technology and operation. In recent years, membrane bioreactors and flotation-based bioreactors have been developed to treat lipid-rich wastewater. In parallel, the increasing knowledge on the diversity of complex microbial communities in anaerobic sludge, and on interspecies microbial interactions, contributed to extend the knowledge and to understand more precisely the limits and constraints influencing the anaerobic biodegradation of lipids in anaerobic reactors. This critical review discusses the most important principles underpinning the degradation process and recent key discoveries and outlines the current knowledge coupling fundamental and applied aspects. A critical assessment of knowledge gaps in the field is also presented by integrating sectorial perspectives of academic researchers and of prominent developers of anaerobic technology.

The Enhancement of Energy Efficiency in a Wastewater Treatment Plant through Sustainable Biogas Use: Case Study from Poland

The improvement of energy efficiency ensuring high nutrients removal is a great concern for many wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). The energy balance of a WWTP can be improved through the application of highly efficient digestion or its intensification, e.g., through the introduction of the co-substrates with relatively high energy potential to the sewage sludge (SS). In the present study, the overview of the energetic aspect of the Polish WWTPs was presented. The evaluation of energy consumption at individual stages of wastewater treatment along with the possibilities of its increasing was performed. Additionally, the influence of co-digestion process implementation on the energy efficiency of a selected WWTP in Poland was investigated. The evaluation was carried out for a WWTP located in Iława. Both energetic and treatment efficiency were analyzed. The energy balance evaluation of this WWTP was also performed. The obtained results indicated that the WWTP in Iława produced on average 2.54 GWh per year (7.63 GWh of electricity in total) as a result of the co-digestion of sewage sludge with poultry processing waste. A single cubic meter of co-substrates fed to the digesters yielded an average of 25.6 ± 4.3 Nm3 of biogas (between 18.3 and 32.2 Nm3/m3). This enabled covering the energy demand of the plant to a very high degree, ranging from 93.0% to 99.8% (98.2% on average). Importantly, in the presence of the co-substrate, the removal efficiency of organic compounds was enhanced from 64% (mono-digestion) to 69–70%.

Management of poultry manure in Poland - Current state and future perspectives

This review aimed to analyse the current state of management practices for poultry manure in Poland and present future perspectives in terms of technologies allowing closing the loops for circular economy, and thus recovery of nutrients and energy. The scope of the review focused primarily on: (1) the analysis of poultry production and generation of poultry manure with special references to quantities, properties (e.g. fertilizing properties), seasonality, etc.; (2) the overview of current practices and methods for managing poultry manure including advantages and limitations; (3) the analysis of potential and realistic threats and risk related to managing poultry manure, and also (4) the analysis of promising technologies for converting poultry manure into added value products and energy. The review addressed the following technologies: composting of poultry manure to obtain fertilizers and soil improvers, anaerobic digestion of poultry manure for energy recovery, and also pyrolysis of poultry manure into different types of biochar that can be applied in agriculture, horticulture and industry. Poultry manure is rich in macro- and micronutrients but also can contain various contaminants such as antibiotics or pesticides, and thus posing a realistic threat to soil and living organisms when applied to soil directly or after biological treatment. The main challenge in poultry manure processing is to assure sufficient closing of carbon, nitrogen and phosphorous loops and safe application to soil.

Advances in enhanced volatile fatty acid production from anaerobic fermentation of waste activated sludge

Low acid production and acid-forming process instability are becoming the major issues to limit the popularization of anaerobic fermentation to produce volatile fatty acid. Considerable research efforts have been made to address these problems, from studying the microorganisms that are primarily responsible for or detrimental to this process, to determining their biochemical pathways and developing mathematical models that facilitate better prediction of process performance to identify the mechanism and optimization of process control. A limited understanding of the complex microbiology and biochemistry of anaerobic fermentation is the primary cause of acid production upset or failure. This review critically assesses the recent advances in enhanced volatile fatty acid production from anaerobic fermentation of waste activated sludge from micro to macro scale, particularly relating to the microbiology, biochemistry, impact factors, and enhancement methods. Previous results suggest that further studies are necessary to substantially promote the efficiency and stability of acid production. One of the promising directions appears to be integrating the existing and growing pretreatment technologies and fermentation processes to enhance metabolic pathways of acetogens but inhibit activities of methanogens, which this study hopes to partially achieve.

Biomethane Production From Lignocellulose: Biomass Recalcitrance and Its Impacts on Anaerobic Digestion

Anaerobic digestion using lignocellulosic material as the substrate is a cost-effective strategy for biomethane production, which provides great potential to convert biomass into renewable energy. However, the recalcitrance of native lignocellulosic biomass makes it resistant to microbial hydrolysis, which reduces the bioconversion efficiency of organic matter into biogas. Therefore, it is necessary to critically investigate the correlation between lignocellulose characteristics and bioconversion efficiency. Accordingly, this review comprehensively summarizes the anaerobic digestion process and rate-limiting step, structural and compositional properties of lignocellulosic biomass, recalcitrance and inhibitors of lignocellulose and their major effects on anaerobic digestion for biomethane production. Moreover, various type of pretreatment strategies applied to lignocellulosic biomass was discussed in detail, which would contribution to cell wall degradation and improvement of biomethane yields. In the view of current knowledge, high energy input and cost requirements are the main limitations of these pretreatment methods. In addition to optimization of fermentation process, further studies should focus much more on key structural influence factors of biomass recalcitrance and anaerobic digestion efficiency, which will contribute to improvement of biomethane production from lignocellulose.

Long-Term Performance of a Pilot-Scale Gas-Sparged Anaerobic Membrane Bioreactor under Ambient Temperatures for Holistic Wastewater Treatment

Concerns regarding ambient temperature operation, dissolved methane recovery, and nutrient removal have limited the implementation of anaerobic membrane bioreactors (AnMBRs) for domestic wastewater treatment. This study addresses these challenges using a pilot-scale gas-sparged AnMBR, with post-treatment recovery of dissolved methane and nutrients. Operating under ambient temperatures for 472 days, the AnMBR achieved an average effluent quality of 58 ± 27 mg/L COD and 25 ± 12 mg/L BOD₅ at temperatures ranging from 12.7 to 31.5 °C. The average total methane yield was 0.14 ± 0.06 L-CH₄/g-COD fed, with 42% of the total methane dissolved in the permeate. Dissolved methane removal using a hollow fiber membrane contactor achieved an average removal efficiency of 70 ± 5%, producing effluent dissolved methane concentrations of 3.8 ± 0.94 mg/L. The methane recovered from gaseous and dissolved fractions could generate an estimated 72.8% of the power required for energy neutrality. Nutrient recovery was accomplished using coagulation, flocculation, and sedimentation for removal of sulfide and phosphorus, followed by a clinoptilolite ion-exchange column for removal of ammonia, producing effluent concentrations of 0.7 ± 1.7 mg-S/L, 0.43 ± 0.29 mg-P/L and 0.05 ± 0.05 mg-N/L. The successful integration of AnMBRs in a treatment train that addresses the critical challenges of dissolved methane and nutrients demonstrates the viability of the technology in achieving holistic wastewater treatment.

Sewage sludge processing and management in small and medium-sized municipal wastewater treatment plant-new technical solution

Although sewage sludge generated by most large wastewater treatment plants is treated as waste, this 'waste' is both a source of energy and nutrients. Moreover, mainly in the small and medium-sized installations of municipal wastewater treatment plants is produced sewage sludge that meets the standards for soil application. Unfortunately, the overly simplified operating systems of small wastewater treatments plants cannot provide the satisfactory content of water in sewage sludge for energy recovery purposes. Therefore, new solutions for sewage sludge treatment are required. The study presents an innovative, energy effective, wastewater treatment and sewage sludge processing in one operational sequence, with significant energy consumption decrease and autothermal biomass production. Current research contains detailed technical information about the novel integrated waste water treatment plant and sewage sludge treatment installation as well as cost analysis in comparison to conventional treatments. The aim of this study was to evaluate the operation of the one prototype line for wastewater and sewage sludge treatment and the assessment of the obtained biomass and fertilizer. This new technology is a solution for small and medium-sized municipal wastewater treatment plants and is leading to change the conception of wastewater treatment process as a whole and is resolving the management of sewage sludge at the place where it is generated. In described process the sewage sludge is adequately treated by the installation apparatus and can be used in two ways: as a source of pathogen-free compost, or as a biomass and feedstock for simple thermal installation. Obtained sewage sludge can be recycled as biomass for combustion with the remaining ash acing as a plant nutrient-rich source (soil properties enhancer). Finally, in a modified wastewater treatment process, an odorless and stabilized compost or biomass for thermal energy recovery can be obtained and utilized directly at the place of origin. This alternative system allows for the systematic (and technological) adjustment of already existing, upgraded and newly-designed wastewater treatment plants. This new and innovative technology driven by assumptions about the best possible use of the resources and energy, allows for a more sustainable functioning of the treatment plant. The present study provides a significant insight into closing carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium and energy loops in wastewater treatments system.

Anaerobic co-digestion of food waste/excess sludge: substrates - products transformation and role of NADH as an indicator

The process of anaerobic co-digestion is vital importance to resource recovery from organic solid wastes such as food waste and municipal sludge. However, its application is hindered by the limited understanding on the complex substrates-products transformation reactions and mechanisms therein. In this study, food waste (FW) and excess sludge (ES) from municipal wastewater treatment were mixed at various ratios (ES/FW 5:0, 4:1, 2:1, 1:1, 1:2, 1:4, w/w), and the co-digestion process was studied in a batch test. The consumption of substrates including soluble proteins and carbohydrates, the variation in the intermediates such as various volatile fatty acids, and the production of hydrogen and methane gases were monitored. The results suggested that 4:1 was likely the optimal ratio where substrates were consumed and biogas generated efficiently, whereas 1:2 and 1:4 caused severe inhibition. Fermentation of ES alone produced mainly acetic and propionic acid, while the addition of FW led to butyric acid type fermentation. Intermediates in the fermentation liquid were tentatively identified, and the levels of NADH quantified using 3D-excitation/emission fluorescence spectrometry. One class of the intermediates, tryptophan-like proteins were correlated to the butyric acid accumulation in ES/FW mixtures, and NADH level was proposed as an indicator of VFAs production activities.

A critical review on anaerobic digestion of microalgae and macroalgae and co-digestion of biomass for enhanced methane generation

Biogas production using algal resources has been widely studied as a green and alternative renewable technology. This review provides an extended overview of recent advances in biomethane production via direct anaerobic digestion (AD) of microalgae, macroalgae and co-digestion mechanism on biomethane production and future challenges and prospects for its scaled-up applications. The effects of pretreatment in the preparation of algal feedstock for methane generation are discussed briefly. The role of different operational and environmental parameters for instance pH, temperature, nutrients, organic loading rate (OLR) and hydraulic retention time (HRT) on sustainable methane generation are also reviewed. Finally, an outlook on the possible options towards the scale up and enhancement strategies has been provided. This review could encourage further studies in this area, to intend and operate continuous mode by designing stable and reliable bioreactor systems and to analyze the possibilities and potential of co-digestion for the promotion of algal-biomethane technology.

Environmental management as a pillar for sustainable development

There is a growing concern about how to minimize the impact of human activities on the environment. Already nowadays, in some places adaptation efforts are needed in order to avoid the irreversibility of negative human activities. Due to climate changes, and corresponding environmental and social changes, there is a great need for a more sustainable development of mankind. Over the years, research studies that analyzed the sustainable development of different communities with a multi-disciplinary approach, stressed the necessity of preserving the environment for next generations. Therefore, responsible and conscientious management of the environment is a pillar of the sustainable development concept. This review introduction article provides an overview of the recent top scientific publications related to sustainable development that mostly originated from previous SDEWES conferences.
