Mitigating river sediment enrichment through the construction of roadside wetlands

Cadmium, Chromium, and Cobalt in the Organs of Glyceria maxima and Bottom Sediments of the Pisa River and Its Tributaries (Poland)

The aim of the presented article was to determine whether human activity significantly influenced the enrichment of Cd, Co, and Cr, in river sediments and Glyceria maxima, in the basin of the Pisa River, an underdeveloped area in Poland. In this study, the content and spatial distribution of Cd, Cr, and Co in the organs underground and above ground, (sequentially: root, stem, leaf) of Glyceria maxima and bottom sediments of the Pisa River and its tributaries (Pisza Woda, Wincenta, Turośl and Skroda River) were analyzed. The Potentially toxic elements (PTEs) were determined by ASA method (Atomic Absorption Spectrometry). The results showed that the average PTEs contents in the river sediments occurred in the following descending order of Cd < Co < Cr. The highest values of the Igeo, CF coefficients, i.e., the greatest impact of anthropogenic activities on the water environment of the Pisa River and its tributaries, were found especially in the case of Cd. The research on the plant material has shown that the highest content of Cr and Co occurs in the roots, then in the stems, and the least in the leaves of Glyceria maxima. However, the amounts of Cd in the examined parts of Glyceria maxima had similar values. The content of Cd, Cr, and Co in the roots and above-ground parts exceeded the physiological values. Glyceria maxima can be used as a biological indicator material. Statistical analyzes showed the movement of PTEs in the sediment-root-stem-leaf system and identified the sources of PTEs, i.e., municipal wastewater treatment plants, the local food industry, and surface runoff.

Sediment and Nutrient Retention in Ponds on an Agricultural Stream: Evaluating Effectiveness for Diffuse Pollution Mitigation

The creation of ponds and wetlands has the potential to alleviate stream water quality impairment in catchments affected by diffuse agricultural pollution. Understanding the hydrological and biogeochemical functioning of these features is important in determining their effectiveness at mitigating pollution. This study investigated sediment and nutrient retention in three connected (on-line) ponds on a lowland headwater stream by sampling inflowing and outflowing concentrations during base and storm flows. Sediment trapping devices were used to quantify sediment and phosphorus accumulations within ponds over approximately monthly periods. The organic matter content and particle size composition of accumulated sediment were also measured. The ponds retained dissolved nitrate, soluble reactive phosphorus and suspended solids during baseflows. During small to moderate storm events, some ponds were able to reduce peak concentrations and loads of suspended solids and phosphorus; however, during large magnitude events, resuspension of deposited sediment resulted in net loss. Ponds filtered out larger particles most effectively. Between August 2019 and March 2020, the ponds accumulated 0.306 t ha−1 sediment from the 30 ha contributing area. During this period, total sediment accumulations in ponds were estimated to equal 7.6% of the suspended flux leaving the 340 ha catchment downstream. This study demonstrates the complexity of pollutant retention dynamics in on-line ponds and highlights how their effectiveness can be influenced by the timing and magnitude of events.

Simulation of streamflow and instream loads of total suspended solids and nitrate in a large transboundary river basin using Source model and geospatial analysis

The management of LULC changes in transboundary river basins continues to challenge water resources managers due to the differences in development and conservation priorities of the countries sharing the basin. While various watershed models (WMs) exist to support decision making, basin-wide sustainable application of the instituted WM depends on the management priorities, resources, data availability, and knowledge gaps at national and sub-basin levels. Building on the results of our prior comparative analysis of WMs for a large transboundary river basin, we applied the 'Source' model to the Lower Mekong Basin (LMB). The constructed LMB-Source model was evaluated based on its streamflow and instream total suspended solids (TSS) and nitrate loads simulative performances. A combination of predictive performance metrics (PPMs) and sophisticated hydrologic signatures were used to calibrate model parameters and diagnose the model performance. Calibration results indicated strong similarity between the simulated and observed time series data and were further confirmed by the validation results. The successful model calibration generated parameters that represent hydrologic response characteristics (HRCs) and overland TSS and nitrate generation and removal dynamics (GRDs) previously not available for the LMB. The HRCs and GRDs can be regionalised with physical attributes of the LMB in future studies which can be used to support the management of ungauged sub-basins. This study confirms Source's capability as a decision support tool for the management of transboundary river basins, and provides basin-specific values of HRCs and GRDs that can be used for a better evaluation of the potential effects of LULC changes.

The effect of re-startup strategies on the recovery of constructed wetlands after long-term resting operation

The objective of this study was to identify the proper re-startup strategies (RSSs) for constructed wetlands (CWs) after long-term resting operation in terms of the recovery of pollutant removal efficiency (RE) and N-cycle gene abundance. The results suggested that backwashing increased the gene abundance without shortening the recovery time of gene abundance. The RSS involving excavation and washing performed better in terms of chemical oxygen demand (COD) RE, especially at the beginning, and performed slightly better or similarly in terms of N-cycle gene abundance and the REs of ammonia nitrogen (NH₄⁺-N) and total nitrogen (TN). The abundance of the Amox gene was 66.1-92.8, 76.3-161.8 and 1550-2492 times larger than that of the napA, narG and amoA genes, respectively, and the anammox process was the dominant N removal pathway. Therefore, excavation and washing is recommended as the RSS for CWs with a long-term rest period.

Temporal hydrochemical dynamics of the River Wensum, UK: Observations from long-term high-resolution monitoring (2011-2018)

In 2010, the UK government established the Demonstration Test Catchment (DTC) initiative to evaluate the extent to which on-farm mitigation measures can cost-effectively reduce the impacts of agricultural water pollution on river ecology whilst maintaining food production capacity. A central component of the DTC platform was the establishment of a comprehensive network of automated, web-based sensor technologies to generate high-temporal resolution (30 min) empirical datasets of surface water, groundwater and meteorological parameters over a long period (2011-2018). Utilising 8.9 million water quality measurements generated for the River Wensum, this paper demonstrates how long-term, high-resolution monitoring of hydrochemistry can improve our understanding of the complex temporal dynamics of riverine processes from 30 min to annual timescales. This paper explores the impact of groundwater-surface water interactions on instream pollutant concentrations (principally nitrogen, phosphorus and turbidity) and reveals how varying hydrochemical associations under contrasting flow regimes can elicit important information on the dominant pollution pathways. Furthermore, this paper examines the relationships between agricultural pollutants and precipitation events of varying magnitude, whilst demonstrating how high-resolution data can be utilised to develop conceptual models of hydrochemical processes for contrasting winter and summer seasons. Finally, this paper considers how high-resolution hydrochemical data can be used to increase land manager awareness of environmentally damaging farming operations and encourage the adoption of more water sensitive land management practices.
