Dynamic restoration mechanism of plant community in the burned area of northeastern margin of Qinghai-Tibet Plateau

Forest fires play a pivotal role in influencing ecosystem evolution, exerting a profound impact on plant diversity and community stability. Understanding post-fire recovery strategies holds significant scientific importance for the ecological succession and restoration of forest ecosystems. This study utilized Partial Least Squares Path Modeling (PLS-PM) to investigate dynamic relationships among plant species diversity, phylogenetic diversity, soil properties, and community stability during various recovery stages (5-year, 15-year, and 23-year) following wildfires on the northeastern margin of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. The findings revealed: (1) Over time, species richness significantly decreased (p< 0.05 or p< 0.01), while species diversity and dominance increased, resulting in uniform species distribution. Community stability progressively improved, with increased species compositional similarity. (2) Throughout succession, phylogenetic diversity (PD) significantly decreased (p< 0.01), accompanied by rising Mean Pairwise Distance (MPD) and Mean Nearest Taxon Distance (MNTD). Net Relatedness Index (NRI) shifted from positive to negative, indicating an increasing aggregation and dominance of plants with similar evolutionary traits in burned areas. Early succession witnessed simultaneous environmental filtering and competitive exclusion, shifting predominantly to competitive exclusion in later stages. (3) PLS-PM revealed that in the early recovery stage, soil properties mainly affected community stability, while species diversity metamorphosed into the primary factor in the mid-to-late stages. In summary, this study showed that plant diversity and phylogenetic variation were successful in revealing changes in community structure during the succession process. Soil characteristics functioned as selective barriers for plant communities during succession, and community stability underwent a multi-faceted and dynamic process. The soil-plant dynamic feedback continuously enhanced soil conditions and community vegetation structure thereby augmenting stability. Post-fire vegetation gradually transitioned towards the original native state, demonstrating inherent ecological self-recovery capabilities in the absence of secondary disturbances.

Exploring the ethnobiological practices of fire in three natural regions of Ecuador, through the integration of traditional knowledge and scientific approaches

This study examines the convergence between traditional and scientific knowledge regarding the use of fire and its potential to trigger wildfires, with possible impacts on ecosystems and human well-being. The research encompasses three distinct natural regions of Ecuador: the coast, the highlands, and the Amazon. Data on traditional fire use were collected through semi-structured interviews with 791 members from five local communities. These data were compared with climatic variables (rainfall (mm), relative humidity (%), wind speed (km/h), and wind direction) to understand the climatic conditions conducive to wildfires and their relationship with human perceptions. Furthermore, the severity of fires over the past 4 years (2019-2022) was assessed using remote sensing methods, employing the Normalized Burn Ratio (NBR) and the difference between pre-fire and post-fire conditions (NBR Pre-fire-NBR Post-fire). The results revealed a significant alignment between traditional knowledge, climatic data, and many fires, which were of low severity, suggesting potential benefits for ecosystems. These findings not only enable the identification of optimal techniques and timing for traditional burns but also contribute to human well-being by maintaining a harmonious balance between communities and their environment. Additionally, they provide valuable insights for the development of more inclusive and effective integrated fire management strategies in these natural areas of Ecuador.

Effect of plant-soil system on the restoration of community stability after wildfire in the northeast margin of Qinghai-Tibet plateau

Wildfires, as an environmental filter, are pivotal ecological disturbances that reshape plant communities and soil dynamics, playing a crucial role in regulating biogeographic patterns and ecosystem services. In this study, we aim to explore the effects of wildfires on forest ecosystems, specifically focusing on the plant-soil feedback mechanisms within the northeastern margin of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau (QTP). Utilizing Partial Least Squares Path Modeling (PLS-PM), we investigated the interrelationships among soil physicochemical properties, enzyme activities, species diversity, and community stability at varying post-fire recovery stages (5, 15, and 23 years). Results indicated that in the early recovery stages, rapid changes in soil properties such as decreased pH (p < 0.001) and increased nutrient availability facilitate the emergence of early successional species with high resource utilization traits. As the ecosystem evolved toward a climax community, the soil and vegetation exhibit increased stability. Furthermore, soil enzyme activities displayed dynamic patterns that corresponded with changes in soil nutrient content, directly influencing the regeneration and diversity of plant communities. Importantly, our study documented a transition in the influence of soil properties on community stability from direct positive effects in initial recovery phases to negative impacts in later stages, while indirect benefits accrue through increased species diversity and enzyme activity. Vegetation composition and structure changed dynamically with recovery time during community succession. Plant nutrient absorption and accumulation affected nutrient dynamics in the soil, influencing plant regeneration, distribution, and diversity. Our results underscore the complex interactions between soil and vegetation that drive the recovery dynamics post-wildfire, highlighting the resilience of forest ecosystems to fire disturbances. This study contributes to the understanding of post-fire recovery processes and offers valuable insights for the management and restoration of fire-affected forest ecosystems.

Short-term recovery of soil and pine tree canopy after late prescribed burning in a semi-arid landscape

Climate change worsening due to global warming and progressive abandonment in rural areas mean that wildfires are increasing in extent and severity terms, and are one of the major disturbances in the Mediterranean Basin. To mitigate these disturbances, preventive management tools need to be used. Fire employment is being implemented, known as prescribed burnings, as forestry actions to change vegetation lines both vertically and horizontally to eliminate forest fuel load continuity. This study aimed to know the ecological effects of late prescribed burning treatments under mixed trees. Prescribed burns were carried out in October 2019 in the municipality of Ayna, Albacete (SE Spain). To assess the short-term (12-month) fire impact on soil, we measured soil respiration with a CO₂ flow chamber and analyzed soil physico-chemical properties. We also used minidisc infiltrometers to analyze soil repellency and soil hydraulic conductivity over a 1-year monitoring period. In addition, we evaluated the effects on tree strata by performing chemical nature analyses of fallen needles in Pinus pinaster after prescribed burning. According to our initial hypotheses, the results did not show significant changes in any parameter evaluated during the study period. However, some variables were affected in the first 3 months, needlefall and in microbiological activity, such as variations in soil physico-chemical properties, which can be due to long dry seasons combined with prescribed burning. This study attempts to observe and make known the effects that low-intensity prescribed burning has on soil and needlefall, which are relevant for updating forest management tools.

Spatial responses of soil carbon stocks, total nitrogen, and microbial indices to post-wildfire in the Mediterranean red pine forest

Wildfire is a key ecological event that alters vegetation and soil quality attributes including biochemical attributes at spatial scale. This knowledge can provide insights into the development of better rehabilitation or restoration strategies that depend on the ecological dynamics of vegetation, fungi, and animals. The present study aimed to understand the causes and consequences of spatial variability of soil organic carbon, microbial biomass C concentrations, and soil quality indices as impacted by wildfire in a red pine forest. This study was conducted using kriging and inverse distance neighborhood similarity (IDW) interpolations methods. The carbon stocks were significantly (P = 0.002) higher in burned areas compared to those of unburned areas by 255% whereas microbial biomass carbon and microbial respiration were significantly (P < 0.0001 and P = 0.02) lower in burned areas by 66% and 90%, The Pearson's correlation analysis showed that carbon stocks were positively correlated with pH (0.61), total nitrogen (0.60) and ash quantity (0.41), but negatively correlated with microbial biomass carbon (-0.46) and nitrogen (-0.61), and microbial respiration (-0.48). The IDW interpolation method better-predicted pH, bulk density, and microbial biomass carbon and nitrogen compared to kriging interpolation, whereas the kriging interpolation method was better than IDW interpolation for the other studied soil properties. We concluded that pH, EC, SOC, C/N, MR, MBC/SOC, and MBC/MBN can be reliable indicators to monitor the effect of wildfire on forest soils. The wildfire event increased soil carbon stocks, TN, pH, and _qCO₂, but decreased MBC and MBN.

Fire Damage to the Soil Bacterial Structure and Function Depends on Burn Severity: Experimental Burnings at a Lysimetric Facility (MedForECOtron)

The soil microbiota is vulnerable to burning; however, it shows some resilience. No indices have yet been developed to assess fire damage related to soil biota. We evaluated the biological soil indices recorded by a Biolog EcoPlate System in a Mediterranean ecosystem. The experiment was carried out in an outdoor forest lysimeter facility (MedForECOtron), where we simulated burns with different burn severities. Burning increased the metabolic diversity of bacteria and most C-substrate utilization groups. Soil organic matter, phosphorus, electric conductivity, and calcium increased with increasing burn severity. Microbial richness and activity, as well as the integrated capacity of soil microbes to use a C source, lowered by burning, but recovered 6 months later. The functional diversity and amount of the C source used by microbes immediately increased after fire, and values remained higher than for unburned soils. We evaluated the changes in the vulnerability and resilience of fire-adapted ecosystems to improve their adaptive forest management. We found that the high burn severity reduced microbial richness, functional diversity, and the C source utilization of soil microbes (marked vulnerability to high temperatures), which recovered in the short term (high resilience). These results help to understand the main mechanisms of the effects of wildfire on semi-arid Mediterranean ecosystems, whose field validation will be helpful for fire prevention planning and restoration of burned areas.

Monitoring post-fire neighborhood competition effects on pine saplings under different environmental conditions by means of UAV multispectral data and structure-from-motion photogrammetry

In burned landscapes, the recruitment success of the tree dominant species mainly depends on plant competition mechanisms operating at fine spatial scale, that may hinder resource availability during the former years after the disturbance. Data acquisition at very high spatial resolution from unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) have promoted new opportunities for understanding context-dependent competition processes in post-fire environments. Here, we explored the potentiality of UAV-borne data for assessing inter-specific competition effects of understory woody vegetation on pine saplings, as well as intra-specific interactions of neighboring saplings, across three burned landscapes located along a climatic/productivity gradient in the Iberian Peninsula. Geographic object-based image analysis (GEOBIA), including multiresolution segmentation and support vector machine (SVM) classification, was used to map pine saplings and understory shrubs at species level. Input data were, on the one hand, multispectral (11.31 cm·pixel^-1) and Structure-from-Motion (SfM) canopy height model (CHM) data fusion, hereafter MS-CHM, and, on the other, RGB (3.29 cm·pixel^-1) and CHM data fusion, hereafter RGB-CHM. A Random Forest (RF) regression algorithm was used to evaluate the effects of neighborhood competition on the relative growth in height of 50 pine saplings randomly sampled across the MS-CHM classified map. Circular plots of 3 m radius were set from the centroid of each target pine sapling to measure percentage cover, mean height of all individuals in the plot and mean height of individuals contacting the target sapling. Competing shrub species were differentiated according to their fire-adaptive traits (i.e. seeders vs resprouters). Object-based image classification applied on MS-CHM yielded higher overall accuracy for the three sites (83.67% ± 3.06%) than RGB-CHM (74.33% ± 3.21%). Intra-specific competitive effects were not detected, whereas increasing cover and height of shrub neighbors had a significant non-linear impact on the growth on pine saplings across the study sites. The strongest competitive effects of seeder shrubs occurred in open areas with low vegetation cover and fuel continuity, following a gap-dependent model. The non-linear relationships evidenced in this study between the structure of neighboring shrubs and the growth of pine seedlings/saplings have profound implications for considering possible competing thresholds in post-fire decision-making processes. These results endorse the use of UAV multispectral and SfM photogrammetry as a valuable post-fire management tool for measuring accurately the effect of competition in heterogeneous burned landscapes.

Effect of repeated soil heating at different temperatures on microbial activity in two burned soils

The effect of fire severity and recurrence on the recovery of enzymatic activities (β-glucosidase, urease, acid phosphatase) and bacterial activity was monitored. Unburned and burned soil samples from soil affected by a high severity wildfire and by a low severity experimental fire were subjected in laboratory to a temperature gradient to simulate different fire severities. These samples were subjected to a second laboratory heat treatment to simulate the effect of recurrence. Soil temperature was measured and used to calculate the degree-hours reached by the soil. The results showed: a) a strong effect of repeated soil heating at different temperatures on soil microbial activity; b) a different sensitivity of enzymatic activities and bacterial activity to fire, c) the magnitude of changes in these biochemical properties was related to the extent of heat supplied to samples and the previous fire/heat history, and d) degree-hours are adequate to quantify the severity of heat treatments and to examine their effects on soil microbial activity. The relationships between degree-hours and the different biochemical properties analyzed clearly demonstrate that the usefulness of these biochemical properties to detect the soil microbial community response to the heat stress followed the order: urease activity > acid phosphatase activity > β-glucosidase activity ≫ bacterial activity.

Changes in microbial communities at different soil depths through the first rainy season following severe wildfire in North China artificial Pinus tabulaeformis forest

Wildfire could result in dramatic changes to soil temperatures and environments, with immediate, short- or long-lasting impacts on soil microbes. However, relatively little research has documented how fire disturbance, soil depth, time variation and their interactions affect soil microbial communities in wet conditions. This study investigated a severe wildfire influenced on bacterial and fungal communities at four soil depths (0-5, 5-10, 10-15 and 15-20 cm) after two quarters (with similar precipitation and exactly during the rainy season). Soil sampling was conducted in a burned site relative to an undisturbed contiguous site in the North China artificial Pinus tabulaeformis forest. Results indicated that fire had significant effects on bacterial and fungal richness, diversity, composition and structure, including most impacts on the surface mineral soil (0-5 cm) within the first period post-fire and minor impacts on the subsoils (5-20 cm) up to the second period. The microbial richness and some dominant taxa in the undisturbed soils changed with time and depth, suggesting spatiotemporal variation in soil microbial communities although the effects of rainfall were weakened. These differences in microbes between burned and undisturbed soils were mainly driven by soil pH, whereas organic matter and available potassium mediated the distribution of microbial communities along depth and time, respectively. In addition, fungal community was more sensitive to fire and time than bacterial community but an opposite result was found in depth. Nevertheless, soil microbes showed some signs of adaptation to fire. This work advocate that non-intervention should be considered in the short term after a fire or low-intensity water replenishment in the case of aridity.

Burning season and vegetation coverage influenced the community-level physiological profile of Mediterranean mixed-mesogean pine forest soils

Knowledge of forest soil ecology is necessary to assess vulnerability to disturbances, such as wildfires, and improve its microbial diversity and functional value. Soil microbiota play an important role in forest soil processes and are a key driver of postfire recovery, but they are very vulnerable to heat. According to future scenarios for climate and land-use change, fire regimes will undergo transformations in semiarid terrestrial ecosystems, mainly in the Mediterranean Basin. To develop tools for forest management in fire-prone areas, i.e., fire prevention, we assessed the impact of prescribed burnings on soil microorganisms in Mediterranean mixed pine forests. We hypothesised that low severity fire burns would not influence the functional diversity of soil microorganisms, although the burning season could influence that response due to seasonal variations in its vulnerability. We used the Biolog EcoPlate System to record soil biological indicators and assess the effect of the prescribed burning season (early or late season) on bacterial communities, including the soil-plant interphase. The soil microbiome response differed significantly according to vegetation coverage but prescribed burning season was not directly related. Burning increased the proportions of soil organic matter and soil organic carbon, and also promoted cation-exchange capacity and total phosphorus, which were higher following spring burns. Microbial richness and the Shannon-Weaver diversity index both showed a positive correlation with vegetation cover. However, microbial richness was triggered after burning uncovered patches of vegetation. We also noted differences in the usage pattern for the six substrate groups defined in our study: the use of carboxylic acids, amino acids and carbohydrates was higher in unburned plots and those subject to late burns, whereas amino acids did not predominate in early burn plots.
