Optimized synthesis of carbon-doped nano-MgO and its performance study in catalyzed ozonation of humic acid in aqueous solutions: Modeling based on response surface methodology

Intensified ozonation in packed bubble columns for water treatment: Focus on mass transfer and humic acids removal

Ozonation has been widely applied for the oxidation of contaminants in wastewater, and the disinfection of water. However, low ozone (O₃) mass transfer efficiency in common ozonation reactors requires high O₃ doses and causes high energy consumption. In this study, to intensify the O₃ mass transfer and oxidation of humic acids (HA) solution, a lava rock packed bubble column (LBC) and a metal pall ring packed bubble column (MBC) were developed and evaluated. In comparison with non-packed bubble column (BC), both LBC and MBC enhanced the O₃ mass transfer efficiency and the generation of hydroxyl radicals, thereby increasing the HA removal from an aqueous solution. At applied O₃ dose of 33.3 mg/(L_column h), the HA removal efficiency in BC was only 47%. When MBC and LBC were applied, it increased to 66% and 72%, respectively. Meanwhile, the O₃ utilization efficiency in LBC reached 68%, which was higher than that in MBC (50%) and BC (21%). Consequently, LBC has the lowest energy consumption (E_EO) for HA removal (1.4 kWh/m³), followed by MBC (1.6 kWh/m³) and BC (2.9 kWh/m³). LBC had better performance than MBC due to the adsorptive and catalytic roles of lava rock on the ozonation process. This study demonstrates the advantages of using lava rocks as packed materials in O₃ bubble column over metal pall rings in intensifying O₃ mass transfer and organic matters removal, which provides some insights into promoting the industrial application of O₃.

Efficient Treatment of Phenol Wastewater by Catalytic Ozonation over Micron-Sized Hollow MgO Rods

Phenol is a nocuous water pollutant that threatens human health and the ecological environment. CoO_x-doped micron-sized hollow MgO rods were prepared for the treatment of phenol wastewater by catalytic ozonation. Magnesium sources, precipitants, initial precursor concentration, Co/Mg molar ratio, and catalyst calcination temperature were optimized to obtain the best catalysts. Prepared catalysts were also well characterized by various methods to analyze their structure and physical and chemical properties. In this process, CoO_x/MgO with the largest large surface area (151.3 m³/g) showed the best catalytic performance (100 and 79.8% of phenol and chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal ratio, respectively). The hydrolysis of CoO_x/MgO plays a positive role in the degradation of phenol. The catalytic mechanism of the degradation of O₃ to free radicals over catalysts has been investigated by in situ electronic paramagnetic resonance (EPR). The catalyst can be reused at least five times without any activity decline. The prepared CoO_x/MgO catalyst also showed excellent catalytic performance for removal and degradation of ciprofloxacin, norfloxacin, and salicylic acid.

Modified bone char with C-MgO as a green antibacterial household water treatment filter: Comparing the microbial quality with refrigerator cartridge filters

The present study examines the efficiency of modified bone char (BC) with C-MgO nanoparticles (MBC-C-MgO) as media in a cartridge filter as an antibacterial agent to produce a new filter. The filters were operated in a continuous mode using a pre-static pump. MBC-C-MgO were produced and modified with sucrose through the co-precipitation method. The microbial quality of effluent water samples was compared with commercial refrigerator cartridge filters using a heterotrophic plate count (HPC) test and SEM analysis. The results showed that the effluent water from the filter with MBC-C-MgO media had the lowest HPC (177 CFU/mL) compared to bioceramic (271 CFU/mL) and carbon (500 CFU/mL) under similar experimental conditions after 4 months of operation. Maximum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) tests were determined using the broth dilution method on Escherichia coli (ATCC 25922) and Enterococcus faecalis (ACC 29212). The MIC results for E. faecalis and E. coli were 156.25 and 312.5 µg/mL, respectively. Furthermore, the MBC results for E. faecalis and E. coli were 312.5 and 625 µg/mL. The experimental results obviously showed the antibacterial properties of C-MgO nanoparticles and the MBC-C-MgO.

Process modeling of municipal solid waste compost ash for reactive red 198 dye adsorption from wastewater using data driven approaches

In the present study, reactive red 198 (RR198) dye removal from aqueous solutions by adsorption using municipal solid waste (MSW) compost ash was investigated in batch mode. SEM, XRF, XRD, and BET/BJH analyses were used to characterize MSW compost ash. CNHS and organic matter content analyses showed a low percentage of carbon and organic matter to be incorporated in MSW compost ash. The design of adsorption experiments was performed by Box-Behnken design (BBD), and process variables were modeled and optimized using Box-Behnken design-response surface methodology (BBD-RSM) and genetic algorithm-artificial neural network (GA-ANN). BBD-RSM approach disclosed that a quadratic polynomial model fitted well to the experimental data (F-value = 94.596 and R² = 0.9436), and ANN suggested a three-layer model with test-R² = 0.9832, the structure of 4-8-1, and learning algorithm type of Levenberg-Marquardt backpropagation. The same optimization results were suggested by BBD-RSM and GA-ANN approaches so that the optimum conditions for RR198 absorption was observed at pH = 3, operating time = 80 min, RR198 = 20 mg L^-1 and MSW compost ash dosage = 2 g L^-1. The adsorption behavior was appropriately described by Freundlich isotherm, pseudo-second-order kinetic model. Further, the data were found to be better described with the nonlinear when compared to the linear form of these equations. Also, the thermodynamic study revealed the spontaneous and exothermic nature of the adsorption process. In relation to the reuse, a 12.1% reduction in the adsorption efficiency was seen after five successive cycles. The present study showed that MSW compost ash as an economical, reusable, and efficient adsorbent would be desirable for application in the adsorption process to dye wastewater treatment, and both BBD-RSM and GA-ANN approaches are highly potential methods in adsorption modeling and optimization study of the adsorption process. The present work also provides preliminary information, which is helpful for developing the adsorption process on an industrial scale.

Sonophotocatalytic treatment of AB113 dye and real textile wastewater using ZnO/persulfate: Modeling by response surface methodology and artificial neural network

The present study investigates the synergistic performance of the sonophotolytic-activated ZnO/persulfate (US/UV/ZnO/PS) process in the decolorization of acid blue 113 (AB113) dye from aqueous solution and its feasibility for the treatment of real textile wastewater. Decolorization of AB113 solution was modeled by central composite design-response surface methodology (CCD-RSM) and artificial neural network (ANN) approaches and optimized by CCD-RSM and genetic algorithm (GA) approaches. Statistical metrics indicated that both CCD-RSM and ANN approaches seemed satisfactory. However, the results of statistical fit measures indicated a relative superiority of CCD-RSM as compared to the ANN approach. The results of optimization of the process parameters by CCD-RSM and GA approaches appeared to be similar as follows: pH = 6.1, reaction time = 25 min, US power density = 300 W/L, ZnO = 0.88 g/L and PS = 2.43 mmol/L. The synergistic effect of the hybrid US/UV/ZnO/PS process in comparison with its individual processes (US, UV, ZnO, and PS) was found to be 54.3%. Quenching experiments discovered that and HO are the main oxidizing radicals in a mildly acidic condition of the reaction solution. The removal efficiency of AB113 in the presence of some anions decreased in the order of bicarbonate > sulfate > phosphate > nitrate > chloride. Further, the reusability feasibility of ZnO showed that the ZnO material retained its photocatalytic property after five successive cycles of reusability test, while Zn²⁺ ion concentration in the reaction solution was measured to be 2.81 mg/L. The findings also indicated that the integrated process application suppresses extremely chemical and electrical costs. The study of the feasibility of the US/UV/ZnO/PS process in the treatment of real textile wastewater was done by determining COD, TOC and BOD₅/COD ratio. Results demonstrated that the 96.6 and 97.1% reduction of COD and TOC was achieved after 5 and 7 h reaction time, respectively. The obtained BOD₅/COD ratio changed from about 0.15 (for non-treated wastewater) to about 0.61 with increasing reaction time from zero to 90 min. In conclusion, the hybrid US/UV/ZnO/PS system can be proposed as a novel and promising approach to be utilized as a pretreatment technique before a biological treatment process to facilitate the biological treatment of recalcitrant textile wastewater.

Catalytic Ozonation of Nitrobenzene by Manganese-Based Y Zeolites

Catalytic ozonation process (COP) is considered as a cost-efficient technology for the treatment of refractory chemical wastewaters. The catalyst performance plays an important role for the treatment efficiency. The present study investigated efficiencies and mechanisms of manganese (Mn)-based Y zeolites in COPs for removing nitrobenzene from water. The catalysts of Mn/NaY and Mn/USY were prepared by incipient wetness impregnation, while Mn-USY was obtained by hydrothermal synthesis. Mn-USY contained a greater ratio of Mn2+ than Mn/NaY, and Mn/USY. Mn oxides loaded on Y zeolites promoted the COP efficiencies. Mn/NaY increased total organic carbon removal in COP by 7.3% compared to NaY, while Mn/USY and Mn-USY increased 11.5 and 15.8%, respectively, relative to USY in COP. Multivalent Mn oxides (Mn2+, Mn3+, and Mn4+) were highly dispersed on the surface of NaY or USY, and function as catalytic active sites, increasing mineralization. Mn-USY showed the highest total organic carbon removal (44.3%) in COP among the three catalysts, because Mn-USY had a higher ratio of Mn2+ to the total Mn oxides on the surface than Mn/NaY and Mn/USY and the catalytic effects from intercorrelations between Mn oxides and mesoporous surface structures. The hydroxyl radicals and superoxide radicals governed oxidations in COP using Mn-USY. Nitrobenzene was oxidized to polyhydroxy phenol, polyhydroxy nitrophenol, and p-benzoquinone. The intermediates were then oxidized to small organic acids and ultimately carbon dioxide and water. This study demonstrates the potential of Y zeolites used in COP for the treatment of refractory chemical wastewaters.

The catalytic ozonation of diazinon using nano-MgO@CNT@Gr as a new heterogenous catalyst: the optimization of effective factors by response surface methodology

In this research, the degradation of the insecticide diazinon was studied using a new hybrid catalyst consisting of magnesium oxide nanoparticles (nano-MgO), carbon nanotubes (CNTs), and graphite (Gr), nano-MgO@CNT@Gr, under various experimental conditions. This study shows the optimization of the nano-MgO@CNT@Gr/O₃ process for diazinon degradation in aqueous solutions. Box–Behnken experimental design (BBD) and response surface methodology (RSM) were used to assess and optimize the solo effects and interactions of four variables, pH, catalyst loading, reaction time, and initial diazinon concentration, during the nano-MgO@CNT@Gr/O₃ process. Analysis of regression revealed an adequate fit of the experimental results with a quadratic model, with R² > 0.91. Following the collection of analysis of variance (ANOVA) results, pH, catalyst loading, and reaction time were seen to have significant positive effects, whereas the concentration of diazinon had a considerable negative impact on diazinon removal via catalytic ozonation. The four variables for maximum diazinon removal were found to be optimum (82.43%) at the following levels: reaction time, 15 min; pH, 10; catalyst dosage, 1.5 g L⁻¹; and diazinon concentration, 10 mg L⁻¹. The degradation of diazinon gave six kinds of by-products. The mechanism of diazinon decomposition was considered on the basis of the identified by-products. According to these results, the nano-MgO@CNT@Gr/O₃ process could be an applicable technique for the treatment of diazinon-containing wastewater.
