Efficient removal of antibiotics from water resources is a public health priority: a critical assessment of the efficacy of some remediation strategies for antibiotics in water

This review discusses the fundamental principles and mechanism of antibiotic removal from water of some commonly applied treatment techniques including chlorination, ozonation, UV-irradiation, Fenton processes, photocatalysis, electrochemical-oxidation, plasma, biochar, anaerobicdigestion, activated carbon and nanomaterials. Some experimental shortfalls identified by researchers such as certain characteristics of degradation agent applied and the strategies explored to override the identified limitations are briefly discussed. Depending on interactions of a range of factors including the type of antibiotic compound, operational parameters applied such as pH, temperature and treatment time, among other factors, all reviewed techniques can eliminate or reduce the levels of antibiotic compounds in water to varying extents. Some of the reviewed techniques such as anaerobic digestion generally require longer treatment times (up to 360, 193 and 170 days, according to some studies), while others such as photocatalysis achieved degradation within short contact time (within a minimum of 30, but up to 60, 240, 300 and 1880 minutes, in some cases). For some treatment techniques such as ozonation and Fenton, it is apparent that subjecting compounds to longer treatment times may improve elimination efficiency, whereas for some other techniques such as nanotechnology, application of longer treatment time generally meant comparatively minimal elimination efficiency. Based on the findings of experimental studies summarized, it is apparent that operational parameters such as pH and treatment time, while critical, do not exert sole or primary influence on the elimination percentage(s) achieved. Elimination efficiency achieved rather seems to be due more to the force of a combination of several factors.

Degradation of Reactive Brilliant Red X-3B by Photo-Fenton-like Process: Effects of Water Chemistry Factors and Degradation Mechanism

Azo dye wastewater belongs to the highly concentrated organic wastewater, which is difficult to be treated by traditional biological processes. The oxidation efficiency of a single physicochemical method is not considerable. Recent research indicated that the advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) based on the highly reactive hydroxyl radical (∙OH) became one of the preferred methods in dealing with such dye wastewater. In this paper, the typical azo dye, reactive brilliant red X-3B, was employed as the target pollutant, and the transition metal Mn and hydrogen peroxide as the catalysts. A photo-Fenton-like process, UV/Mn2+-H2O2 system, was established, which enables a combination of various technologies to improve azo dye degradation efficiency while reducing disposal costs. The results indicated that the UV/Mn2+-H2O2 system had the synergism of Mn2+/H2O2 and UV/H2O2, which was 2.6 times greater than the sum of the two individual effects. And the degradation of X-3B reached the optimum under the conditions of 0.59 mmol/L of the Mn2+, 10 mmol/L of the H2O2, pH = 6 and a high level of DO. The ∙OH, generated from chem-catalytic and photocatalytic decomposition of H2O2, played the predominant role in the decolorization of X-3B and mineralization of its intermediates. The ∙OH tended to attack and break the chromophore group, resulting in the rapid decolorization of X-3B. The azo bond in X-3B was easy to be decomposed in the form of N2, while the triazinyl group was recalcitrant for ring opening. The degradation process of the UV/Mn2+-H2O2 system preferred to be conducted at an acidic condition and appropriate concentrations of Mn2+ and H2O2. The alkaline condition would decrease the utilization of H2O2, and excessive H2O2 would also quench the ∙OH.

A review of the new multifunctional nano zero-valent iron composites for wastewater treatment: Emergence, preparation, optimization and mechanism

Nano zero-valent iron (NZVI) with high chemical reactivity and environmental friendliness had recently become one of the most efficient technologies for wastewater restoration. However, the unitary NZVI system had not met practical requirements for wastewater treatments. Expectantly, the development of NZVI would prefer multifunctional NZVI-based composites, which could be prepared and optimized by the combined methods and technologies. Consequently, a systematic and comprehensive summary from the perspective of multifunctional NZVI-composite had been conducted. The results demonstrated that the advantages of various systems were integrated by multifunctional NZVI-composite systems with a more significant performance of pollutant removal than those of the bare NZVI and its composites. Simultaneously, characteristics of the product prepared by the incorporation of numerous methods were superior to those by a simple method, resulting in the increase of the entirety efficiency. By comparison with other preparation methods, the ball milling method with higher production and field application potential was worthy of attention. After combining multiple technologies, the effect of NZVI and its composite systems could be dramatically strengthened. Preparation technology parameters and treatment effect of contaminants could be further optimized using more comprehensive experimental designs and mathematical models. The mechanism of the multifunctional NZVI system for contaminants treatment was primarily focused on adsorption, oxidation, reduction and co-precipitation. Multiple techniques were combined to enhance the dispersion, alleviating passivation, accelerating electron transfer efficiency or mass transfer action for optimizing the effect of NZVI composites.

Utilizing the Broad Electromagnetic Spectrum and Unique Nanoscale Properties for Chemical-Free Water Treatment

Clean water is critical for drinking, industrial processes, and aquatic organisms. Existing water treatment and infrastructure are chemically-intensive and based on nearly century-old technologies that fail to meet modern large and decentralized communities. The next-generation of water processes can transition from outdated technologies by utilizing nanomaterials to harness energy from across the electromagnetic spectrum, enabling electrified and solar-based technologies. The last decade was marked by tremendous improvements in nanomaterial design, synthesis, characterization, and assessment of material properties. Realizing the benefits of these advances requires placing greater attention on embedding nanomaterials onto and into surfaces within reactors and applying external energy sources. This will allow nanomaterial-based processes to replace Victorian-aged, chemical intensive water treatment technologies.

Application of magnetic fields to wastewater treatment and its mechanisms: A review

Magnetic field (MF) has been applied widely and successfully as an efficient, low-cost and easy-to-use technique to enhance wastewater treatment (WWT) performance. Although the effects of MF on WWT were revealed and summarized by some works, they are still mysterious and complex. This review summarizes the application of MF in magnetic adsorption-separation of heavy metals and dyes, treatment of domestic wastewater and photo-magnetic coupling technology. Furthermore, the mechanisms of MF-enhanced WWT are critically elaborated from the perspective of magnetic physicochemical and biological effects, such as magnetoresistance, Lorentz force, and intracellular radical pair mechanism. At last, the challenges and opportunities for MF application in WWT are discussed. For overcoming the limitations and taking advantages of MFs in WWT, fundamental research of the mechanisms of the application of MFs should be carried out in the future.

Regeneration and reuse of magnetic particles for contaminant degradation in water

Fenton reaction is an oxidation process of interest in wastewater treatment because of its ability to degrade organic compounds. Iron-based magnetic particles can be a very useful catalyst when using heterogeneous Fenton process. The major problem of this heterogeneous process is the saturation of the Fe ³⁺ on the surface, which limits the process. In this study, the possibility of using magnetite particles as a substrate is presented, increasing its degradation efficiency by Fenton reaction through a regeneration process that achieves the electronic reduction of its surface using reducing agents. The results indicate that the regeneration process is quite effective, increasing the efficiency of the degradation of Methylene Blue up to 99%. The concentration of magnetite is the most influential factor in the efficiency of the reaction, while the regeneration time and the concentration of reducing agent do not significantly affect the results considering the range used. The presence of mechanical stirring may adversely affect the reaction in the long term. Increasing the oxidant agent concentration reduces the initial speed of the reaction but not the long-term efficiency. The use of hydrazine in this process allows the successive reuse of these particles maintaining a high percentage of elimination of methylene blue, above 70% even after 10 uses, compared to an elimination below 20% for particles not regenerated after the second use and for particles regenerated with ascorbic acid after the eighth use.

Novel Magnetic Fe3O4/α-FeOOH Nanocomposites and Their Enhanced Mechanism for Tetracycline Hydrochloride Removal in the Visible Photo-Fenton Process

Magnetic Fe₃O₄/α-FeOOH heterojunction nanocomposites (denoted as Fe-NCs) have been synthesized by a fast one-pot hydrothermal method. The obtained Fe-NCs contain rich micropores with a high surface area of 135.15 m²/g. The different phases in the composites can efficiently enhance the visible-light absorption, improving the separation and transfer of photogenerated electron-hole pairs during the photocatalytic reaction. Thus, they show excellent degradation and mineralization of tetracycline (TC) over a wide pH range (5-9) in the visible photo-Fenton reaction. Especially, the catalyst exhibits the highest adsorption capacity toward TC at a neutral pH, which facilitates the surface reactions of TC with active species. Experiments evidence that the high production of photogenerated holes and superoxide radicals (O₂ ^•-) in Fe-NCs are favorable to the high catalytic efficiency. Combined with liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry, the possible pathway toward TC degradation was proposed.

Magnetic field enhanced denitrification efficiency of immobilized bacterial particles

The effect of the magnetic field on denitrification process in immobilized bacteria particles was investigated in this study. The magnetic field could enhance the denitrification efficiency, especially for wastewater with low C/N ratios, and the average removal efficiencies of NO₃ ^--N increased by 6.58%. High-throughput sequencing analysis revealed that the magnetic field had substantial impacts on the stability of microbial community structure and relative abundance in immobilized bacteria particles, which was beneficial for the stability of denitrifying bacteria. Through the research in this paper, we suggest that magnetic field can be used to improve the denitrification performance of immobilized bacteria particles in the wastewater treatment industry.
