Ultrafiltration of separated digestate by tubular membranes: Influence of feed pretreatment on hydraulic performance and heavy metals removal

Nutrient recovery from digestate: Pilot test experiments

A series of technologies have been employed in pilot-scale to process digestate, i.e. the byproduct remaining after the anaerobic digestion of agricultural and other wastes, with the aim of recovering nutrients and reducing the load of solids and organics from it, hence improving the quality of digestate for potential subsequent reuse. In this case the digestate originated from a mixture of dairy and animal wastes and a small amount of agricultural wastes. It was processed by the application of several treatments, applied in series, i.e. microfiltration, ultrafiltration, reverse osmosis, selective electrodialysis and combined UV/ozonation. The initially applied membrane filtration methods (micro- and ultra-filtration) removed most of the suspended solids and macromolecules with a combined efficiency of more than 80%, while the reverse osmosis (at the end) removed almost all the remaining solutes (85-100%), producing sufficiently clarified water, appropriate for potential reuse. In the selective electrodialysis unit over 95% of ammonium and potassium were recovered from the feed, along with 55% of the phosphates. Of the latter, 75% was retrieved in the form of struvite.

Next-generation ultrafiltration membranes: A review of material design, properties, recent progress, and challenges

Membrane technology utilizing ultrafiltration (UF) processes has emerged as the most widely used and cost-effective simple process in many industrial applications. The industries like textiles and petroleum refining are promptly required membrane based UF processes to alleviate the potential environmental threat caused by the generation of various wastewater. At the same time, major limitations such as material selection as well as fouling behavior challenge the overall performance of UF membranes, particularly in wastewater treatment. Therefore, a complete discussion on material design with structural property relation and separation performance of UF membranes is always exciting. This state-of-the-art review has exclusively focused on the development of UF membranes, the material design, properties, progress in separation processes, and critical challenges. So far, most of the review articles have examined the UF membrane processes through a selected track of paving typical materials and their limited applications. In contrast, in this review, we have exclusively aimed at comprehensive research from material selection and fabrication methods to all the possible applications of UF membranes, giving more attention and theoretical understanding to the complete development of high-performance UF systems. We have discussed the methodical engineering behind the development of UF membranes regardless of their materials and fabrication mechanisms. Identifying the utility of UF membrane systems in various applications, as well as their mode of separation processes, has been well discussed. Overall, the current review conveys the knowledge of the present-day significance of UF membranes together with their future prospective opportunities whilst overcoming known difficulties in many potential applications.

Long-Term Performance of Ultrafiltration Membranes: Corrosion Fouling Aspect

The past decade has seen a rise in the importance of the ultrafiltration (UF) technique in the separation of various complex solutions. However, the fouling phenomenon is the main limitation to faster process development. To the best of the authors' knowledge, the present paper is the first to aim to identify the role of corrosion fouling in long-term UF. For this purpose, polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) and polyethersulfone (PES) membranes were used. The investigations were carried out with the use of both pilot-scale and laboratory-scale units. Results obtained in the present study have clearly demonstrated that the oil concentration has a significant impact on the process performance. Indeed, it has been noted that a reduction in oil concentration from 160 to 100 mg/L resulted in an increase in the PVDF membrane flux from 57 to 77 L/m²h. In addition, it has been shown that the feed temperature has a significant influence on the UF performance. Importantly, it has been shown that corrosion fouling is of vital importance in UF membranes. Indeed, corrosion products such as iron oxides contaminated the membrane surface leading to an irreversible decrease in the UF process performance. In addition, it has been found that repeating the chemical cleaning of the membrane units significantly reduced the intensity of the fouling phenomenon. However, the complete elimination of its effects was not achieved. Therefore, it has been indicated that cleaning agents recommended by membrane manufacturers do not remove corrosion products deposited on the membrane surface. Undoubtedly, the obtained results can be used in the design of UF units leading to the extension of membrane installation lifetime.

The potential of animal manure management pathways toward a circular economy: a bibliometric analysis

Improper disposal of animal waste is responsible for several environmental problems, causing eutrophication of lakes and rivers, nutrient overload in the soil, and the spread of pathogenic organisms. Despite the potential to cause adverse ecological damage, animal waste can be a valuable source of resources if incorporated into a circular concept. In this sense, new approaches focused on recovery and reuse as substitutes for traditional processes based on removing contaminants in animal manure have gained attention from the scientific community. Based on this, the present work reviewed the literature on the subject, performing a bibliometric and scientometric analysis of articles published in peer-reviewed journals between 1991 and 2021. Of the articles analyzed, the main issues addressed were nitrogen and phosphorus recovery, energy generation, high-value-added products, and water reuse. The energy use of livestock waste stands out since it is characterized as a consolidated solution, unlike other routes still being developed, presenting the economic barrier as the main limiting factor. Analyzing the trend of technological development through the S curve, it was possible to verify that the circular economy in the management of animal waste will enter the maturation phase as of 2036 and decline in 2056, which demonstrates opportunities for the sector's development, where animal waste can be an economic agent, promoting a cleaner and more viable product for a sustainable future.

Sustainable and efficient technologies for removal and recovery of toxic and valuable metals from wastewater: Recent progress, challenges, and future perspectives

Due to their numerous effects on human health and the natural environment, water contamination with heavy metals and metalloids, caused by their extensive use in various technologies and industrial applications, continues to be a huge ecological issue that needs to be urgently tackled. Additionally, within the circular economy management framework, the recovery and recycling of metals-based waste as high value-added products (VAPs) is of great interest, owing to their high cost and the continuous depletion of their reserves and natural sources. This paper reviews the state-of-the-art technologies developed for the removal and recovery of metal pollutants from wastewater by providing an in-depth understanding of their remediation mechanisms, while analyzing and critically discussing the recent key advances regarding these treatment methods, their practical implementation and integration, as well as evaluating their advantages and remaining limitations. Herein, various treatment techniques are covered, including adsorption, reduction/oxidation, ion exchange, membrane separation technologies, solvents extraction, chemical precipitation/co-precipitation, coagulation-flocculation, flotation, and bioremediation. A particular emphasis is placed on full recovery of the captured metal pollutants in various reusable forms as metal-based VAPs, mainly as solid precipitates, which is a powerful tool that offers substantial enhancement of the remediation processes' sustainability and cost-effectiveness. At the end, we have identified some prospective research directions for future work on this topic, while presenting some recommendations that can promote sustainability and economic feasibility of the existing treatment technologies.

Digestate mechanical separation in industrial conditions: Efficiency profiles and fertilising potential

The growing number of biogas plants has resulted in problems with the digestate management. In the studies carried out in industrial conditions in the biogas plant fed with sugar beet pulp, the influence of the decanter centrifuge operating parameters such as the retention time and differential speed on the effectiveness of digestate mechanical separation was evaluated. During the studies, the impact of the addition of cationic polyacrylamide flocculants with different charge density on the liquid and solid fraction composition was also determined. It was shown that the dry matter and organic matter concentrations in the solid fraction were about 88.80 g/kg FM and 66.20% DM, respectively and in the liquid fraction 25.50 g/kg FM and 77.00% DM after the centrifugation of the digestate without flocculant at an optimal retention time of 225 s and differential speed of 4 rpm. The removal efficiency of dry matter and organic matter was 32.00% and 39.39%. The best separation results were obtained centrifuging the digestate with addition of 20 g/kg DM flocculant with a charge density of 80%. The flocculant addition increased the removal efficiency of dry matter and organic matter in comparison to centrifugation without flocculant by 49.60% and 46.86%, respectively. After centrifugation and flocculation, about 60.83% of nitrogen, 74.55% of potassium and 33.23% of phosphorus remained in the liquid fraction. The liquid fraction contained lower concentrations of nickel, lead, cadmium and chromium in comparison to solid fraction.

Treatment of Manure and Digestate Liquid Fractions Using Membranes: Opportunities and Challenges

Manure and digestate liquid fractions are nutrient-rich effluents that can be fractionated and concentrated using membranes. However, these membranes tend to foul due to organic matter, solids, colloids, and inorganic compounds including calcium, ammonium, sodium, sulfur, potassium, phosphorus, and magnesium contained in the feed. This review paper is intended as a theoretical and practical tool for the decision-making process during design of membrane-based systems aiming at processing manure liquid fractions. Firstly, this review paper gives an overview of the main physico-chemical characteristics of manure and digestates. Furthermore, solid-liquid separation technologies are described and the complexity of the physico-chemical variables affecting the separation process is discussed. The main factors influencing membrane fouling mechanisms, morphology and characteristics are described, as well as techniques covering membrane inspection and foulant analysis. Secondly, the effects of the feed characteristics, membrane operating conditions (pressure, cross-flow velocity, temperature), pH, flocculation-coagulation and membrane cleaning on fouling and membrane performance are presented. Finally, a summary of techniques for specific recovery of ammonia-nitrogen, phosphorus and removal of heavy metals for farm effluents is also presented.

Effect of Pretreatment on Hydraulic Performance of the Integrated Membrane Process for Concentrating Nutrient in Biogas Digestate from Swine Manure

Nanofiltration (NF) or reverse osmosis (RO) process has been widely applied for concentrating nutrient in biogas digestate. However, efficient pretreatment is key to the sustainable operation of NF or RO. In this study, the combination of NF and RO for concentrating biogas digestate was compared using different pretreatments of hollow fiber ultrafiltration membrane (HFUFM) and ceramic membrane (CUFM). Pilot-scale batch tests were conducted (500 L). CUFM showed a higher membrane flux than HFUFM (100 ~ 180 L·(m²·h)⁻¹ vs. 17 ~ 35 L·(m²·h)⁻¹), but they showed little impact on the NF + RO process. Membrane fluxes of NF and RO were 20 ~ 48 L·(m²·h)⁻¹ and 16 ~ 40 L·(m²·h)⁻¹, respectively. In the RO permeates, the removal rates of total suspended solids (TSS), total solids (TS), chemical oxygen demand (COD), total nitrogen (TN), NH₄⁺-N, and Cl⁻ were above 91%. In the concentrates, TN and total potassium (TK) were concentrated by 1.60 and 2.00 folds in the NF stage, and by 2.10 and 2.30 folds in the RO stage. Further attention should be paid to the antibiotics risks in the concentrates before they are utilized as plant fertilizers.
