Promoting the decontamination of different types of water pollutants (Cd2+, safranin dye, and phosphate) using a novel structure of exfoliated bentonite admixed with cellulose nanofiber

Application of ANN and RSM for Rhodamine B and Safranine-O Decolorization on Zinc-Carbon Battery Waste Derived Ag/CoFe-LDH/rGO Catalyst

The present work is first aimed at recovering graphite from carbon rods of waste zinc-carbon (Zn-C) batteries for applications such as wastewater treatment, in order to contribute to the development of a sustainable environment. Then, a composite material, cobalt-iron layered double hydroxide combination with reduced graphene oxide, and with subsequent Ag nanoparticles deposition via NaBH4 reduction method (Ag/CoFe-LDH/rGO) was prepared for the catalytic activity of Rhodamine B (RhB) and Safranine-O (SO) as model contaminants from aquatic media. The catalytic activity of RhB and SO by Ag/CoFe-LDH/rGO in the presence of NaBH4 was studied to model and optimize the process parameters (NaBH4 amount, reaction time, initial dye concentration (Co), and catalyst dosage) via central composite design (CCD)-response surface methodology (RSM). Also, an artificial neural network (ANN) model was developed to estimate the catalytic activity of each dye using an RSM data set. The catalytic activities of 99.54% and 99.96% were obtained for RhB and SO dyes, respectively, under the optimal conditions: NaBH4 amount 12.32 mM, reaction time 3.19 min, Co 33.46 mg/L, and catalyst dosage 1.24 mg/mL for RhB dye; NaBH4 amount 16.76 mM, reaction time 3.06 min, Co 15.10 mg/L, and catalyst dosage 1.46 mg/mL for SO dye. The optimum conditions of process parameters by ANN with gray wolf optimizer (GWO) were in good agreement with the points determined the RSM-CCD. These results demonstrate that RSM and ANN approaches can be applied practically and efficiently to maximize the catalytic activity of RhB and SO by Ag/CoFe-LDH/rGO in the existence of NaBH4. On the other hand, from the kinetic and thermodynamic studies, the positive activation enthalpy, ΔH# and the negative activation entropy, ΔS# values for each dye demonstrated that the catalytic performance was endothermic and less random at the solid/liquid interface.

Adsorption and recovery of phosphate using sodium carbonate as co-precipitant synthesized La&Zr dual-metal modified material: Adsorption mechanism and practical application

Adsorption methods offer efficient recovery of phosphorus from water bodies. Modification adsorption materials combining lanthanum (La) and zirconium (Zr) dual-metal immobilized via co-precipitation method have been widely applied in the adsorption and recovery of phosphate. Meanwhile, sodium carbonate (Na2CO3) is gradually replacing sodium hydroxide (NaOH) as the mainstream co-precipitant for immobilizing metals into supporting matrices due to its excellent performance and environmental friendliness. However, the adsorption mechanisms of materials synthesized with different co-precipitants and the synergistic effects between dual-metal components are not well understood, which is not conducive to the further optimization of dual-metal adsorption materials. In this study, anion exchange resin was utilized as the supporting matrices, and La&Zr dual-metal-modified materials, La&Zr-CO32- and La&Zr-OH-, were prepared using Na2CO3 and NaOH as co-precipitants, respectively. The results indicate that La&Zr-CO32- exhibits superior performance in phosphate adsorption and recovery, with adsorption capacity and recovery efficiency reaching 36.28 mg/g and 82.59%, respectively. Additionally, this material demonstrates strong stability in reuse, phosphate selectivity, and a wide pH applicability range. La&Zr-CO32- achieves phosphate adsorption through surface electrostatic affinity, ligand exchange, and intraspherical complexation, whereas La&Zr-OH- primarily relies on electrostatic adsorption on the surface and interior of the material. Synergistic effects between La and Zr result in enhanced adsorption performance of the dual-metal material compared to individual metals. Specifically, phosphate adsorption is predominantly governed by La, while the presence of Zr further enhances ligand exchange between lattice oxygen and metals. Simultaneously, Zr doping enhances the phosphate recovery capacity and reusability of the materials. Continuous flow adsorption results from actual water bodies demonstrate that La&Zr-CO32- is more suitable for the removal and recovery of phosphate in water treatment engineering. This study provides a theoretical basis and technical support for the adsorption and recovery of phosphate using dual-metal-modified materials.

Recent progresses in bentonite/lignin or polysaccharide composites for sustainable water treatment

Today, with the growth of the human population, industrial activities have also increased. Different industries such as painting, cosmetics, leather, etc. have broadly developed, and as a result, they also produce a lot of pollutants. These pollutants can enter the environment and pollute water, air, and soil. Organic dyes, nitro compounds, drug residues, pesticides and herbicides are pollutants that should be removed from the environment. Natural polymers or biopolymers are important types of organic materials that are broadly applied for different applications. Among them, polysaccharides and lignin, which are two types of biopolymers, have attracted much consideration owing to their advantages such as biocompatibility, environmental friendly, safety, availability, etc. Polysaccharides include cellulose, gum, starch, alginate (Alg), chitin, and chitosan (CS). On the other hand, bentonite is one of the types of clays, which owing to their properties like large specific surface area, adsorption performance, naturally available, etc., have drawn the interest of many researchers. As a result, the synthesis of a composite including polysaccharide/lignin and bentonite can be very efficient for different applications, especially environmental ones. In this review, we instigated the preparation of these composites as well as the removal performance of them. In fact, we reported recent advancements in the synthesis of lignin- and polysaccharide-bentonite composites for the removal of diverse kinds of contaminants like organic dyes, nitro compounds, and hazardous materials.

Development of chitosan biopolymer by chemically modified orange peel for safranin O dye removal: A sustainable adsorbent and adsorption modeling using RSM-BBD

This study aimed to develop a biocomposite (hereinafter, CHI/OP-H2SO4) via the functionalization of chitosan (CHI) biopolymer by chemically modified orange peel (OP-H2SO4). The physicochemical characteristics of CHI/OP-H2SO4 were studied using methods such as pHpzc, XRD, FTIR, BET, and FESEM-EDX. The efficacy of the CHI/OP-H2SO4 biocomposite in removing cationic dye (safranin O, SAF-O) from aqueous solutions was assessed. The Box-Behnken Design (BBD) based on response surface methodology (RSM) was employed to optimize the adsorption performance of CHI/OP-H2SO4, considering factors such as A: CHI/OP-H2SO4 dose (0.02-0.08 g), B: pH (4-10), and C: time (10-60 min). The pseudo-first-order and Freundlich isotherm models align well with the experimental data of SAF-O adsorption by CHI/OP-H2SO4. The excellent adsorption capacity for CHI/OP-H2SO4 was recorded (321.2 mg/g). The notable adsorption of SAF-O onto CHI/OP-H2SO4 is attributed primarily to electrostatic forces between the acidic groups of CHI/OP-H2SO4 and the SAF-O cation, along with H-bonding, and n-π interactions. By transforming waste materials into valuable resources, this approach not only mitigates environmental impact but also produces a promising and sustainable adsorbent for the removal of cationic dyes, exemplified here by the effective removal of SAF-O dye.

Nano/micro-cellulose-based materials as remarkable sorbents for the remediation of agricultural resources from chemical pollutants

Overusing pesticides, fertilizers, and synthetic dyes has significantly increased their presence in various parts of the environment. The transportation of these pollutants into agricultural soil and water through rivers, soils, and groundwater has seriously threatened human and ecosystem health. Applying techniques and materials to clean up agricultural sources from pesticides, heavy metals (HMs), and synthetic dyes (SDs) is one of the major challenges in this century. The sorption technique offers a viable solution to remediate these chemical pollutants (CHPs). Cellulose-based materials have become popular in nano and micro scales because they are widely available, safe to use, biodegradable, and have a significant ability to absorb substances. Nanoscale cellulose-based materials exhibit greater capacity in absorbing pollutants compared to their microscale counterparts because they possess a larger surface area. Many available hydroxyl groups (-OH) and chemical and physical modifications enable the incorporation of CHPs on to cellulose-based materials. Following this potential, this review aims to comprehensively summarize recent advancements in the field of nano- and micro-cellulose-based materials as effective adsorbents for CHPs, given the abundance of cellulosic waste materials from agricultural residues. The recent developments pertaining to the enhancement of the sorption capacity of cellulose-based materials against pesticides, HMs, and SDs, are deliberated.

Sustainable functionalized smectitic clay-based nano hydrated zirconium oxides for enhanced levofloxacin sorption from aqueous medium

In this study, the functionalized smectitic clay (SC)-based nanoscale hydrated zirconium oxide (ZrO-SC) was successfully synthesized and utilized for the adsorptive removal of levofloxacin (LVN) from an aqueous medium. The synthesized ZrO-SC and its precursors (SC and hydrated zirconium oxide (ZrO(OH)₂)) were extensively characterized using various analytical methods to get insight into their physicochemical properties. The results of stability investigation confirmed that ZrO-SC composite is chemically stable in strongly acidic medium. The surface measurements revealed that ZrO impregnation to SC resulted in an increased surface area (six-fold higher than SC). The maximum sorption capacity of ZrO-SC for LVN was 356.98 and 68.87 mg g^-1 during batch and continuous flow mode studies, respectively. The mechanistic studies of LVN sorption onto ZrO-SC revealed that various sorption mechanisms, such as interlayer complexation, π-π interaction, electrostatic interaction, and surface complexation were involved. The kinetic studies of ZrO-SC in the continuous-flow mode indicated the better applicability of Thomas model. However, the good fitting of Clark model suggested the multi-layer sorption of LVN. The cost estimation of the studied sorbents was also assessed. The obtained results indicate that ZrO-SC is capable of removing LVN and other emergent pollutants from water at a reasonable cost.

Synthesis and Biological Activity Evaluations of Green ZnO-Decorated Acid-Activated Bentonite-Mediated Curcumin Extract (ZnO@CU/BE) as Antioxidant and Antidiabetic Agents

Green ZnO-decorated acid-activated bentonite-mediated curcumin extract (ZnO@CU/BE) was prepared as a multifunctional antioxidant and antidiabetic agent based on the extract of curcumin, which was used as a reducing and capping reagent. ZnO@CU/BE showed notably enhanced antioxidant properties against nitric oxide (88.6 ± 1.58%), 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazil (90.2 ± 1.76%), 2,2'-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulphonic acid (87.3 ± 1.61%), and superoxide (39.5 ± 1.12%) radicals. These percentages are higher than the reported values of ascorbic acid as a standard and the integrated components of the structure (CU, BE/CU, and ZnO). This signifies the impact of the bentonite substrate on enhancing the solubility, stability, dispersion, and release rate of the intercalated curcumin-based phytochemicals, in addition to enhancing the exposure interface of ZnO nanoparticles. Therefore, effective antidiabetic properties were observed, with significant inhibition effects on porcine pancreatic α-amylase (76.8 ± 1.87%), murine pancreatic α-amylase (56.5 ± 1.67%), pancreatic α-glucosidase (96.5 ± 1.07%), murine intestinal α-glucosidase (92.5 ± 1.10%), and amyloglucosidase (93.7 ± 1.55%) enzymes. These values are higher than those determined using commercial miglitol and are close to the values measured using acarbose. Hence, the structure can be applied as an antioxidant and antidiabetic agent.

Synthesis and Characterization of Green Zinc-Metal-Pillared Bentonite Mediated Curcumin Extract (Zn@CN/BE) as an Enhanced Antioxidant and Anti-Diabetes Agent

Green zinc-metal-pillared bentonite mediated curcumin extract (Zn@CN/BE) was synthesized and characterized as a low-cost and multifunctional (curcumin-based phytochemicals, zinc-capped curcumin, zinc/curcumin complexes, and zinc-pillared bentonite) antioxidant and antidiabetic agent with enhanced activity. The activities of the Zn@CN/BE structure were assessed in comparison with curcumin and ZnO as individual components and in the presence of miglitol and acarbose commercial drugs as controls. The structure validated remarkable antioxidant activities against the common oxidizing radicals (nitric oxide (94.7 ± 1.83%), DPPH (96.4 ± 1.63%), ABTS (92.8 ± 1.33%), and superoxide (62.3 ± 1.63 %)) and inhibition activities against the main oxidizing enzymes (porcine α-amylase (89.3 ± 1.13%), murine α-amylase (70.8 ± 1.54%), pancreatic α-Glucosidase (99.3 ± 1.23%), intestinal α-Glucosidase (97.7 ± 1.24%), and amyloglucosidase (98.4 ± 1.64%)). The reported activities are higher than the activities of individual components and the studied ascorbic acid as well as the commercial drugs. This enhancement effect was assigned to the impact of the zinc pillaring process within the curcumin/bentonite host, which induced the stability, dispersions, and interactive interface of the essential active compounds in addition to the solubility and release rate of the intercalated curcumin extract. This paper recommends the application of the Zn@CN/BE structure as an enhanced, low-cost, biocompatible, safe, and simply produced antioxidant and antidiabetic agent.

Deciphering the adsorption potential of a functionalized green hydrogel nanocomposite for aspartame from aqueous phase

Herein, a functionalized green hydrogel nanocomposite based on carboxymethylated gum tragacanth and nanobentonite (GTBCH) was designed via free-radical polymerization approach for the elimination of Aspartame (AS) from wastewater. The GTBCH fabrication was validated by Fourier Transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) techniques. Central composite design (CCD) was efficaciously applied to determine the quadratic polynomial approach for predicting the adsorption capacity (q_e) of AS. The optimum sequestration conditions were dosage (0.8 g L^‒1), agitation time (35 min) initial AS concentration (60 mg L^-1), pH (6) and temperature (308 K). The CCD results revealed that dosage of GTBCH and initial concentration have greater impact on q_e followed by pH, time, and temperature. The significant adsorption capacity (392.04 mg g^-1), calculated from Langmuir model, could be attributed to the stronger interactions prevalent between AS and GTBCH. Diffusion investigations depicted the uptake of AS via surface adsorption, liquid film and intraparticle diffusion, respectively. Ionic strength and real water have minor effect on the adsorption capacity demonstrating electrostatic interaction has least impact in adsorption process. The pHzpc, FTIR and XPS investigations revealed hydrogen bonding, n-π and van der Waals interactions as the principal removal mechanisms. Robust design, high adsorption capacity, eco-friendly facets along with excellent reusability indicated the GTBCH as a competent adsorbent for AS decontamination from wastewater.

Adsorption of Cationic Contaminants by Cyclodextrin Nanosponges Cross-Linked with 1,2,3,4-Butanetetracarboxylic Acid and Poly(vinyl alcohol)

Cationic organic pollutants (dyes and pesticides) are mainly hydrosoluble and easily contaminate water and create a serious problem for biotic and abiotic species. The elimination of these dangerous contaminants from water was accomplished by adsorption using cyclodextrin nanosponges. These nanosponges were elaborated by the cross-linking between 1,2,3,4-butanetetracarboxylic acid and β-cyclodextrin in the presence of poly(vinyl alcohol). Their physicochemical characteristics were characterized by gravimetry, acid-base titration, TGA, 13C NMR, ATR-FTIR, Raman, X-ray diffraction, and Stereomicroscopy. The BP5 nanosponges displayed 68.4% yield, 3.31 mmol/g COOH groups, 0.16 mmol/g β-CD content, 54.2% swelling, 97.0% PQ removal, 96.7% SO removal, and 98.3% MG removal for 25 mg/L of initial concentration. The pseudo-second-order model was suitable for kinetics using 180 min of contact time. Langmuir isotherm was suitable for isotherm with the maximum adsorption of 120.5, 92.6, and 64.9 mg/g for paraquat (PQ), safranin (SO), and malachite green (MG) adsorption, respectively. Finally, the reusability performance after five regeneration times reached 94.1%, 91.6%, and 94.6% for PQ, SO, and MG adsorption, respectively.

Plasticized magnetic starch-based Fe3O4 clay polymer nanocomposites for phosphate adsorption from aqueous solution

Plastics contribute a magnificent role to modern civilization, but the waste becomes a huge burden to ecology and remains intact for a thousand years. Hence, the recent movement is shifted to biodegradable plastic. In this study, an attempt was made to introduce an added value to the environment where the bio-plasticized materials were used for phosphate removal. A G-plasticized magnetic starch-based Fe₃O₄ clay polymer nanocomposite (PNC) was synthesized to remove phosphate from the aqueous solution. It was synthesized from activated carbon (AC), coated iron oxide nanoparticles (CIONP), nanoclay (NC), and glycerol (G) as a plasticizer. The synthesized adsorbents were characterized with UV-Vis, SEM, XRD, and FTIR. The PNC and constituent (CIONP) were tested for phosphate removal through batch adsorption experiments. The adsorption capacity increases with increasing the adsorbent dose and decreases with an increase in phosphate concentration. The synthesized PNC effectively raised the constituent optimum phosphate ion adsorption pH from acidic (pH = 3) to slightly acidic (pH = 6). At the optimal pH, the CIONP and PNC maximum phosphate adsorption capacity (MPAC) was 3.12 and 2.31 mg P/g, respectively. In addition, the phosphate removal efficiency of PNC (45-95% at pH 6) was comparable to CIONP (58-97% at pH 3) under an initial 2–100 mg P/L. The adsorbents adsorption kinetics and isotherm study best described by the pseudo-second-order and Freundlich model, in turn. The SEM images support the conclusion, in which the PNC shows a heterogenous porous surface. Therefore, the adsorption mechanisms were mainly described by multilayer and chemical adsorption, such as electrostatic and ion exchange. It can be concluded that there is a positive synergistic effect between the biopolymer (starch) and nanomaterials that form the PNC. This study results propose the multiple added values of modified bio-plasticized material (with adsorbent) for environmental (phosphate) remediation.

Linear and nonlinear investigations for the adsorption of paracetamol and metformin from water on acid-treated clay

Natural clays are considered a safe, low-cost, and sound sorbent for some pharmaceutical and body care products from water. Metformin (MF) and paracetamol (PA) are of the most consumable drugs worldwide. A portion of natural clay was treated with distilled water, and another part was treated with hydrochloric acid. The water-treated clay (WTC) and the acid-treated clay (ATC) were characterized by scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, Fourier transforms infrared spectroscopy, and nitrogen adsorption isotherm. Batch experiments were employed to investigate the influence of contact time and solution parameters on the adsorption of PA and MF on WTC and ATC. 30 min attained the equilibrium for all sorbent-sorbate systems. Both sorbents fitted the pseudo-second-order kinetic model with a preference to the nonlinear fitting, and the mechanism of adsorption partially fitted the liquid-film diffusion model. The PA and MF adsorption on WTC and ATC fitted the Freundlich model in preference to nonlinear fitting. The adsorption of pollutants on both sorbents was spontaneous, exothermic, and physisorption in nature. Even at low concentrations, both WTC and ATC showed efficiency above 80% in removing PA and MF from tab water, groundwater, and Red seawater. These findings nominated natural clay as an alternative to the costly nanomaterials as sorbents for removing pharmaceutical contaminants from water.

Investigation of water treatment sludge from drinking water treated with Zetafloc 553I coagulant for phosphorus removal from wastewater

Water treatment sludge have shown promising results as adsorbent for phosphorus and sulphate removal from real wastewater. The study was conducted through batch kinetics and equilibrium isotherm modes. The chemical composition reveal that aluminium compounds were dominant in the fresh sludge and aluminium phosphates were also observed in the used sludge. The results reveal that Manganese was leached from the material at all pH values investigated with the highest level observed at pH 2 and all concentrations higher than the national standard of discharge into the relevant environment. The point of zero charge of the adsorbent was pH 8.04 and high adsorption capacities for both sulphate and phosphate ions were observed at pH values lower than this point. Batch kinetic results revealed 96.0 ± 3.0% sulphates removal in the first 30 min whereas the highest phosphates removal was 88.0 ± 4.0% attained at 300 min of the experiment. Pseudo - second order reaction fitted the data better than Pseudo-first order reaction. The percentage removal of sulphates was observed decreasing with increasing adsorbent dose after 2.4 g dose but removal increased with increasing media dosage for phosphorus. The equilibrium data was better described by Freundlich isotherm with constants relating to adsorption capacities being 6.76 and 6.2 L g^-1 respectively, for sulphates and phosphates adsorption. The adsorption capacity of phosphates was observed decreasing with increasing temperature, but the results were not conclusive in the case of sulphates. The results reveal that copper, nickel, and zinc have affinity for sulphates. The water treatment sludge can be used for phosphate and sulphate removal from wastewater though the leachability of manganese is a concern. Further investigations through fixed bed columns will need to be investigated before field trials. In conclusion, the sludge can be used as adsorbent for phosphorus and sulphates removal from wastewater through filtration and onsite treatment methods such as vertical or horizontal flow wetland systems. The success of the adsorbent will reduce the costs associated with its disposal which can also lead to leachability of metals into the environment with time.

Instantaneous Adsorption of Synthetic Dyes from an Aqueous Environment Using Kaolinite Nanotubes: Equilibrium and Thermodynamic Studies

Innovative kaolinite nanotubes (KNTs) are synthesized utilizing a simple technique involving a sonication-induced exfoliation process, followed by chemical scrolling reactions. The KNTs as a material have high reactivity and promising surface area to be used in the purification of water from cationic dyes (safranin (SF) and malachite green (MG)) and anionic dyes (methyl orange (MO) and Congo red (CR)). The kinetic studies of the four dyes SF, MG, CR, and MO show an equilibration time interval of 240 min. The SF, MG, CR, and MO dyes' uptake reactions are in agreement with the kinetic behavior of the pseudo-first-order model and the equilibrium properties of the Langmuir model. Such modeling results, in addition to the Gaussian energies from the Dubinin-Radushkevich (D-R) model (SF (1.01 kJ/mol), MG (1.08 kJ/mol), CR (1.11 kJ/mol), and MO (1.65 kJ/mol)), hypothesize monolayer adsorption of the four dyes by physical reactions. The KNTs show theoretical q max values of 431.6, 489.9, 626.2, and 675.5 (mg/g) for SF, MG, CR, and MO, respectively. The thermodynamic examination of SF, MG, CR, and MO adsorption reactions using KNTs verifies their adsorption by exothermic and spontaneous reactions. The KNT adsorbents achieve promising adsorption results in the presence of different coexisting ions and show significant recyclability properties. Therefore, the production of KNTs from kaolinite shows a strong effect on inducing the textural, physicochemical, and adsorption properties of clay layers as well as their affinity for different species of synthetic dyes.

Synthesis of layered double hydroxides with nitrate and its adsorption properties of phosphate

In the present study, different ratios of layered double hydroxides (LDHs) were synthesized via co-precipitation method. The synthesized LDHs were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), nitrogen adsorption-desorption analysis, point of zero charges (pH_pzc), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Phosphate adsorption performances were estimated by batch adsorption experiments; desorption hysteresis and adsorption mechanism were also investigated. The XRD, SEM and TEM results confirmed the multilayer structure of the synthesized LDHs. The pseudo-second-order kinetic model and the Freundlich model describe the adsorption behavior of LDHs best. The maximum adsorption capacity is 185.86 mg-KH₂PO₄/g for Mg₂Al-NO₃ LDH. When the dosage of LDHs was greater than 2 g/L, the phosphorus content in the solution decreased from 30 mg-P/L to 0.077 mg-P/L after adsorption by Mg₂Al-NO₃ LDH. All the results reveal that Mg₂Al-NO₃ LDH is a potential adsorbent for removing phosphate from aqueous solution.

Insight into carbohydrate polymers (chitosan and 2- hydroxyethyl methacrylate/methyl methacrylate) intercalated bentonite-based nanocomposites as multifunctional and environmental adsorbents for methyl parathion pesticide

Two-hybrid products of bentonite intercalated carbohydrate polymers (chitosan (BE.P.CH) and 2- hydroxyethyl methacrylate/methyl methacrylate copolymer (BE/P.HEMA/MMA)) were synthesized as enhanced adsorbents for methyl parathion pesticide (MPP). The intercalation processes induced the affinity and the capacity of bentonite achieving the best value at pH 8. The maximum MPP adsorption capacities of BE (287.3 mg/g), BE/P.CH (634.5 mg/g), and BE/P.HEMA-MMA (868.5 mg/g) obtained after 300 min, 240 min, and 360 min, respectively. The kinetic properties of BE follow the Pseudo-second order behavior (R² = 0.93) while BE/P.CH and BE/P.HEMA-MMA are of Pseudo-First order behavior (R² > 0.92). Based on the equilibrium studies, the three products are of Freundlich isotherm behavior (R² > 0.9) and the uptake is of multilayer forms on heterogeneous surfaces. The Gaussian energies (>8 KJ/mol), Gibbs free energies (>20 to <40 KJ/mol), and enthalpies (>40 to <80 KJ/mol) give an indication about adsorption mechanism involved chemical and physical reactions. The thermodynamics of MPP uptake reactions by the three products are of endothermic and spontaneous behaviors. The MPP uptake in the presence of NH⁺⁴, PO₄^-3, Mn⁺², and Pb⁺² competitive ions reflects enhancement in the affinity of BE after the integration between it and the selected polymers.

Enhanced Adsorption of Toxic and Biologically Active Levofloxacin Residuals from Wastewater Using Clay Nanotubes as a Novel Fixed Bed: Column Performance and Optimization

Kaolinite nanotube particles (KNTs) were synthesized by a chemical exfoliation and scrolling process in the existence of sonication waves. The KNT product was identified as a mesoporous material (12 nm in pore diameter) with high surface area (105 m²/g) and promising adsorption affinity for the levofloxacin antibiotic (LVOX) residuals in wastewater. The KNT particles were used as a fixed bed in the continuous adsorption column system for LVOX considering the essential variables. The investigation of the KNT fixed bed in a continuous column for 1800 min verified its suitability to reduce the LVOX content in 9 L of polluted solutions by 80.4%. This was recognized after using the KNT bed of 4 cm in height, a flow rate of 5 mL/min, a pH value of 8, a total flow interval of 1800 min, and an LVOX concentration of 10 mg/L. The regeneration study of the bed declared effective recyclability properties for the KNT particles in the LVOX adsorption column system. The dynamic properties of the KNT bed-based column system were explained based on Thomas, Adams-Bohart, and the Yoon-Nelson kinetic models. The LVOX adsorption reaction by KNTs follows Langmuir behavior with homogeneous and monolayer uptake form. The Gaussian energy (2.05 kJ/mol) and the thermodynamic parameters emphasized physical, spontaneous, and exothermic adsorption reactions for LVOX by KNTs.
