Physicochemical characteristics of calcined MnFe2O4 solid nanospheres and their catalytic activity to oxidize para-nitrophenol with peroxymonosulfate and n-C7 asphaltenes with air

Tetracycline decontamination from aqueous media using nanocomposite adsorbent based on starch-containing magnetic montmorillonite modified by ZIF-67

In the present study, starch/zeolitic imidazole framework-67 (ZIF-67) modified magnetic montmorillonite nanocomposite adsorbent to remove tetracycline (TC) as an emerging antibiotic-based contaminant from aqueous media. The surface properties of the adsorbents were investigated using FTIR, XRD, SEM, EDX-Map, XPS, TEM, BET, and VSM analysis. The specific surface area of MMT, St/MMT-MnFe2O4, and St/MMT-MnFe2O4-ZIF-67 magnetic nanocomposite samples were found to be 15.63, 20.54, and 588.41 m2/g, respectively. The influence of pH, adsorbent amount, initial TC concentration, temperature, contact time, and coexisting ions on TC elimination was explored in a batch adsorption system. The kinetic and equilibrium data were well matched with the pseudo-second-order and Langmuir isotherm models, respectively. The maximum monolayer adsorption capacities of TC were obtained to be 40.24, 66.1, and 135.2 mg/g by MMT, St/MMT-MnFe2O4, and St/MMT-MnFe2O4-ZIF-67 magnetic nanocomposite adsorbents, respectively. Also, thermodynamic studies illustrated that the TC adsorption process is exothermic and spontaneous. Furthermore, the magnetic nanocomposite adsorbent St/MMT-MnFe2O4-ZIF-67 showed good reusability and could be recycled for up to five cycles. This excellent adsorption performance, coupled with the facile separation of the magnetic nanocomposite, gave St/MMT-MnFe2O4-ZIF-67 a high potential for TC removal from aqueous media.

New trends on green energy and environmental technologies, with special focus on biomass valorization, water and waste recycling: editorial of the special issue

In this editorial piece, the Editors of the Virtual Special Issue (VSI) "New Trends on Green Energy and Environmental Technologies, with Special Focus on Biomass Valorization, Water and Waste Recycling", present summarized data corresponding to the accepted submissions, as well as additional comments regarding the thematic of the VSI. Overall, 83 manuscripts were received, with final publication of those having the highest quality, accepted after peer-reviewing. The Editors think that the result is a set of very interesting papers that increase the knowledge on the matter, and which would be useful for researchers and the whole society.

Electrocatalytic activity of calcined manganese ferrite solid nanospheres in the oxygen reduction reaction

In this study, we synthesized MnFe₂O₄ solid nanospheres (MSN) calcined at different temperatures (200-500 °C) and MSN-based materials mixed with carbon black, for their use as electrocatalysts in the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in alkaline medium (0.1 M KOH). It was demonstrated that the calcination temperature of MSN material determined its chemical surface composition and microstructure and it had an important effect on the electrocatalytic properties for ORR, which in turn was reflected in the performance of MSN/CB-based electrocatalysts. The study revealed that the presence of Mn species plays a key role in the ORR activity. Among tested, MSN200/CB and MSN350/CB exhibited the best electrochemical performances together with outstanding stability.

Catalytic Decomposition of n-C7 Asphaltenes Using Tungsten Oxides–Functionalized SiO2 Nanoparticles in Steam/Air Atmospheres

A wide range of technologies are being developed to increase oil recovery, reserves, and perform in situ upgrading of heavy crude oils. In this study, supported tungsten oxide nanoparticles were synthesized, characterized, and evaluated for adsorption and catalytic performance during wet in situ combustion (6% of steam in the air, in volumetric fraction) of n-C7 asphaltenes. Silica nanoparticles of 30 nm in diameter were synthesized using a sol–gel methodology and functionalized with tungsten oxides, using three different concentrations and calcination temperatures: 1%, 3%, 5% (mass fraction), and 350 °C, 450 °C, and 650 °C, respectively. Equilibrium batch adsorption experiments were carried out at 25 ℃ with model solutions of n-C7 asphaltenes diluted in toluene at concentrations from 100 mg·L−1 to 2000 mg·L−1, and catalytic wet in situ combustion of adsorbed heavy fractions was carried out by thermogravimetric analysis coupled to FT-IR. The results showed improvements of asphaltenes decomposition by the action of the tungsten oxide nanoparticles due to the reduction in the decomposition temperature of the asphaltenes up to 120 °C in comparison with the system in the absence of WOX nanoparticles. Those synthesis parameters, such as temperature and impregnation dosage, play an important role in the adsorptive and catalytic activity of the materials, due to the different WOX–support interactions as were found through XPS. The mixture released during the catalyzed asphaltene decomposition in the wet air atmosphere reveals an increase in light hydrocarbons, methane, and hydrogen content. Hydrogen production was prioritized between 300 and 400 °C where, similarly, the reduction of CO, CH4, and the increase in CO2 content, associated with water–gas shift, and methane reforming reactions occur, respectively. The results show that these catalysts can be used either for in situ upgrading of crude oil, or any application where heavy fractions must be transformed.

Preparation, characterization, and applications of Fe-based catalysts in advanced oxidation processes for organics removal: A review

Fe-based catalysts as low-cost, high-efficiency, and non-toxic materials display superior catalytic performances in activating hydrogen peroxide, persulfate (PS), peracetic acid (PAA), percarbonate (PC), and ozone to degrade organic contaminants in aqueous solutions. They mainly include ferrous salts, zero-valent iron, iron-metal composites, iron sulfides, iron oxyhydroxides, iron oxides, and supported iron-based catalysts, which have been widely applied in advanced oxidation processes (AOPs). However, there is lack of a comprehensive review systematically reporting their synthesis, characterization, and applications. It is imperative to evaluate the catalytic performances of various Fe-based catalysts in diverse AOPs systems and reveal the activation mechanisms of different oxidants by Fe-based catalysts. This work detailedly summarizes the synthesis methods and characterization technologies of Fe-based catalysts. This paper critically evaluates the catalytic performances of Fe-based catalysts in diverse AOPs systems. The effects of solution pH, reaction temperature, coexisting ions, oxidant concentration, catalyst dosage, and external energy on the degradation of organic contaminants in the Fe-based catalyst/oxidant systems and the stability of Fe-based catalysts are also discussed. The activation mechanisms of various oxidants and the degradation pathways of organic contaminants in the Fe-based catalyst/oxidant systems are revealed by a series of novel detection methods and characterization technologies. Future research prospects on the potential preparation means of Fe-based catalysts, practical applications, assistive technologies, and impact in AOPs are proposed.

Effect of Steam Quality on Extra-Heavy Crude Oil Upgrading and Oil Recovery Assisted with PdO and NiO-Functionalized Al2O3 Nanoparticles

This work focuses on evaluating the effect of the steam quality on the upgrading and recovering extra-heavy crude oil in the presence and absence of two nanofluids. The nanofluids AlNi1 and AlNi1Pd1 consist of 500 mg·L−1 of alumina doped with 1.0% in mass fraction of Ni (AlNi1) and alumina doped with 1.0% in mass fraction of Ni and Pd (AlNi1Pd1), respectively, and 1000 mg·L−1 of tween 80 surfactant. Displacement tests are done in different stages, including (i) basic characterization, (ii) waterflooding, (iii) steam injection at 0.5 quality, (iv) steam injection at 1.0 quality, (v) batch injection of nanofluids, and (vi) steam injection after nanofluid injection at 0.5 and 1.0 qualities. The steam injection is realized at 210 °C, the reservoir temperature is fixed at 80 °C, and pore and overburden pressure at 1.03 MPa (150 psi) and 5.51 MPa (800 psi), respectively. After the steam injection at 0.5 and 1.0 quality, oil recovery is increased 3.0% and 7.0%, respectively, regarding the waterflooding stage, and no significant upgrade in crude oil is observed. Then, during the steam injection with nanoparticles, the AlNi1 and AlNi1Pd1 increase the oil recovery by 20.0% and 13.0% at 0.5 steam quality. Meanwhile, when steam is injected at 1.0 quality for both nanoparticles evaluated, no incremental oil is produced. The crude oil is highly upgraded for the AlNi1Pd1 system, reducing oil viscosity 99%, increasing the American Petroleum Institute (API)° from 6.9° to 13.3°, and reducing asphaltene content 50% at 0.5 quality. It is expected that this work will eventually help understand the appropriate conditions in which nanoparticles should be injected in a steam injection process to improve its efficiency in terms of oil recovery and crude oil quality.
