Pyrite-activated persulfate oxidation and biological denitrification for effluent of biological landfill leachate treatment system

Anaerobic biodegradation of azo dye reactive black 5 by a novel strain Shewanella sp. SR1: Pathway and mechanisms

The efficiency of microbial populations in degrading refractory pollutants and the impact of adverse environmental factors often presents challenges for the biological treatment of azo dyes. In this study, the genome analysis and azo dye Reactive Black 5 (RB5) degrading capability of a newly isolated strain, Shewanella sp. SR1, were investigated. By analyzing the genome, functional genes involved in dye degradation and mechanisms for adaptation to low-temperature and high-salinity conditions were identified in SR1. The addition of co-substrates, such as glucose and yeast extract, significantly enhanced RB5 decolorization efficiency, reaching up to 87.6%. Notably, SR1 demonstrated remarkable robustness towards a wide range of NaCl concentrations (1-30 g/L) and temperatures (10-30 °C), maintaining efficient decolorization and high biomass concentration. The metabolic pathways of RB5 degradation were deduced based on the metabolites and genes detected in the genome, in which the azo bond was first cleaved by FMN-dependent NADH-azoreductase and NAD(P)H-flavin reductase, followed by deamination, desulfonation, and hydroxylation mediated by various oxidoreductases. Importantly, the degradation metabolites exhibited reduced toxicity, as revealed by toxicity analysis. These findings highlighted the great potential of Shewanella sp. SR1 for bioremediation of wastewaters contaminated with azo dyes.

Harnessing the power of natural minerals: A comprehensive review of their application as heterogeneous catalysts in advanced oxidation processes for organic pollutant degradation

The release of untreated wastewater into water bodies has become a significant environmental concern, resulting in the accumulation of refractory organic pollutants that pose risks to human health and ecosystems. Wastewater treatment methods, including biological, physical, and chemical techniques, have limitations in achieving complete removal of the refractory pollutants. Chemical methods, particularly advanced oxidation processes (AOPs), have gained special attention for their strong oxidation capacity and minimal secondary pollution. Among the various catalysts used in AOPs, natural minerals offer distinct advantages, such as low cost, abundant resources, and environmental friendliness. Currently, the utilization of natural minerals as catalysts in AOPs lacks thorough investigation and review. This work addresses the need for a comprehensive review of natural minerals as catalysts in AOPs. The structural characteristics and catalytic performance of different natural minerals are discussed, emphasizing their specific roles in AOPs. Furthermore, the review analyzes the influence of process factors, including catalyst dosage, oxidant addition, pH value, and temperature, on the catalytic performance of natural minerals. Strategies for enhancing the catalytic efficiency of AOPs mediated by natural minerals are explored, mainly including physical fields, reductant addition, and cocatalyst utilization. The review also examines the practical application prospects and main challenges associated with the use of natural minerals as heterogeneous catalysts in AOPs. This work contributes to the development of sustainable and efficient approaches for organic pollutant degradation in wastewater.

Remove humic acid from water quickly using only oxygen and sulfite at nickel cobalt spinel catalyst

The typical refractory organic pollutant, humic acid (HA), causes many water and wastewater treatment obstacles. In this study, a novel method was proposed to degrade HA based on the low-temperature (<100 °C) catalytic air oxidation technology (LTCAO) using the NiCo-spinel (NCO) as a catalyst and the sulfite as a promoter. Sulfite enhanced the quantity of mineralized HA to 2.4 times that without sulfite assistance, and the removal rate of total organic carbon reached 93.1% within 60 min at 90 °C. HA gradually degrades into small organic molecules and is mineralized through interfacial reactions and radical paths. Sulfite plays a triple role in these reactions. Sulfite sulfonated HA destroyed its pseudomicellar structure, making HA easily oxidized. Sulfite also coordinated with NCO and promoted the internal electronic hopping conduction of NCO because of the fast electron transfer between SO₃^2- and the h⁺sites, thus accelerating the electron transfer between HA and O₂ mediated by NCO. In addition, the coordinated SO₃^2- was activated to form the radical ∙SO₃^-, which strengthened the oxidation of HA. This study supports a simple and green method for efficiently cleaning water and wastewater rich in HA.

Effect of aeration modes on nitrogen removal and N2O emission in the partial nitrification and denitrification process for landfill leachate treatment

The anoxic/multi-aerobic process is widely applied for treating landfill leachate with low carbon to nitrogen ratio. In this study, the effect of two aeration modes in the aerobic phase, i.e. decreasing dissolved oxygen (DO) and increasing DO, on nitrogen removal and N₂O emission in the process were systematically compared. The results demonstrate that the aerobic phase with increasing DO mode has a positive effect on improved total nitrogen removal (78 %) under the COD/N ratio as low as 3.45 and minimized N₂O emission. DO concentration higher than 1.5 mg/L in the aerobic phase reduced nitrogen removal and led to a significant high N₂O emission in the process. Complete nitrite denitrification in the anoxic phase correlated with minimized N₂O emission. Under efficient nitrogen removal stage, N₂O emission factor was 2.4 ± 1.0 % of the total incoming nitrogen. Microbial analysis revealed that increasing DO mode increased the abundance of ammonia oxidizing bacteria and denitrifiers.

Microbial mechanisms of refractory organics degradation in old landfill leachate by a combined process of UASB-A/O-USSB

A combined process of anaerobic digestion (UASB), shortcut nitrification-denitrification (A/O), and semi-anoxic co-metabolism (operated by an up-flow semi-anoxic sludge bed; USSB) was constructed for the treatment of old landfill leachate (>10 years). The performance and mechanism of refractory organics degradation by the combined process (UASB-A/O-USSB) were investigated. The results showed that the semi-anoxic co-metabolism contributes 57 % of the totally degraded refractory organics. Specific microorganisms and their corresponding metabolic functions drive the degradation of refractory organics in each unit of the UASB-A/O-USSB process. In detail, organics with simple molecular structures were preferentially degraded by anaerobic digestion and shortcut denitrification, whereas those with complex structures were subsequently degraded in the oxic tanks and USSB reactor by shortcut nitrification and semi-anoxic co-metabolism. The structural equation model showed that the combined process of shortcut nitrification and semi-anoxic co-metabolism had a better effect on the degradation of recalcitrant organics than the single process. These findings provide information on how refractory organics are metabolically degraded in a combined process.

A Review of Persulfate Activation by Magnetic Catalysts to Degrade Organic Contaminants: Mechanisms and Applications

All kinds of refractory organic pollutants in environmental water pose a serious threat to human health and ecosystems. In recent decades, sulfate radical-based advanced oxidation processes (SR-AOPs) have attracted extensive attention in the removal of these organic pollutants due to their high redox potential and unique selectivity. This review first introduces persulfate activation by magnetic catalysts to degrade organic contaminants. We present the advances and classifications in the generation of sulfate radicals using magnetic catalysts. Subsequently, the degradation mechanisms in magnetic catalysts activated persulfate system are summarized and discussed. After an integrated presentation of magnetic catalysts in SR-AOPs, we discuss the application of persulfate activation by magnetic catalysts in the treatment of wastewater, landfill leachate, biological waste sludge, and soil containing organic pollutants. Finally, the current challenges and perspectives of magnetic catalysts that activated persulfate systems are summarized and put forward.

Advanced oxidation process based on hydroxyl and sulfate radicals to degrade refractory organic pollutants in landfill leachate

As a special type of wastewater produced in the landfill, leachate is mainly composed of organic pollutants, inorganic salts, ammonia nitrogen and heavy metals, and featured by high pollutants concentration, complex composition and large fluctuations in water quality and volume. Biological, chemical and physical methods have been proposed to treat landfill leachate, but much attention has been paid to the advanced oxidation processes (AOPs), due to their high adaptability and organic degradation efficiency. This paper summarizes the recent findings on the AOPs based on hydroxyl radical (OH) (e.g., ozonation and catalyzed ozone oxidations, Fenton and Fenton-like oxidations) and sulfate radical (SO₄^-) (e.g., activated and catalyzed persulfate oxidations), especially the production routes of free radicals and mechanisms of action. When dealing with some special landfill leachates, it is difficult for a single advanced oxidation technology to achieve the expected results, but the synergistic combination with biological or physical methods can produce satisfactory outcomes. Therefore, this paper has summarized the application of these combined treatment technologies on landfill leachate.

Nanofiltration as an Efficient Tertiary Wastewater Treatment: Elimination of Total Bacteria and Antibiotic Resistance Genes from the Discharged Effluent of a Full-Scale Wastewater Treatment Plant

Wastewater reuse for agricultural irrigation still raises important public health issues regarding its safety, due to the increasing presence of emerging contaminants, such as antibiotic resistant bacteria and genes, in the treated effluents. In this paper, the potential for a commercial Desal 5 DK nanofiltration membrane to be used as a tertiary treatment in the wastewater treatment plants for a more effective elimination of these pollutants from the produced effluents was assessed on laboratory scale, using a stainless steel cross-flow cell. The obtained results showed high concentrations of total bacteria and target carbapenem and (fluoro)quinolone resistance genes (blaKPC, blaOXA-48, blaNDM, blaIMP, blaVIM, qnrA, qnrB and qnrS) not only in the discharged, but also in the reused, effluent samples, which suggests that their use may not be entirely safe. Nevertheless, the applied nanofiltration treatment achieved removal rates superior to 98% for the total bacteria and 99.99% for all the target resistance genes present in both DNA and extracellular DNA fractions, with no significant differences for these microbiological parameters between the nanofiltered and the control tap water samples. Although additional studies are still needed to fully optimize the entire process, the use of nanofiltration membranes seems to be a promising solution to substantially increase the quality of the treated wastewater effluents.

Oxidative dehalogenation and mineralization of polychlorinated biphenyls by a resuscitated strain Streptococcus sp. SPC0

Most functional microorganisms cannot be cultivated due to entering a viable but non-culturable (VBNC) state, which limits the characterization and application of polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB)-degrading strains. Resuscitating VBNC bacteria could provide huge candidates for obtaining high-efficient PCB degraders. However, limited studies have focused on the ability of resuscitated strains for PCBs degradation. In the present study, whole-genome analysis of a resuscitated strain SPC0, and its performances in degradation of three prevalent PCB congeners (PCBs 18, 52 and 77) were investigated. The results indicate that the strain SPC0 belonged to the genus Streptococcus, possessed the degradation potential for aromatic xenobiotics. The SPC0 could effectively degrade PCBs 18 and 52, but exhibited lower degradation efficiency of PCB 77. Degradation of PCBs 18 and 52 could be fitted well by zero-order model, whereas the fittest model for PCB 77 degradation was pseudo second-order kinetics. The bph genes expression, chloride ions release and degradation metabolites identification, suggest that SPC0 possessed the capability of oxidative dehalogenation and mineralization of PCBs. Interestingly, SPC0 can degrade PCBs via the bph-encoded biphenyl pathway, and further mineralize metabolite dichlorobenzoate via protocatechuate pathway. This study is the first to show that a strain belonging to genus Streptococcus possessed PCB-degrading capability, which uncovered the powerful potential of resuscitated strains for bioremediation of PCB-contaminated sites.

Oxidation of Aqueous Dexamethasone Solution by Gas-Phase Pulsed Corona Discharge

The most widely used anti-inflammatory corticosteroid dexamethasone (DXM), frequently detected in waterbodies due to its massive consumption and incomplete removal in wastewater treatment processes, was experimentally studied for oxidation with gas-phase pulsed corona discharge (PCD) varied in pulse repetition frequency, pH, DXM initial concentration and additions of surfactant sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS) and tert-butyl alcohol (TBA). The experimental study also included ozonation as compared to PCD in energy efficiency. The advantageous energy efficiency of PCD was observed in wide spans of pH and DXM initial concentrations surpassing ozonation by about 2.4 times. Identified transformation by- and end-products (fluoride and acetate), as well as the impact of radical scavengers, point to the prevalent radical oxidation of DXM. Somewhat increased toxicity observed on the course of PCD-treatment of high DXM concentrations presents a subject for further studies.
