Understanding the ecological processes governing hydrophyte-associated bacterial communities involved in hydrophyte growth and development

Inhibition of high sulfur on functional microorganisms and genes in slightly contaminated soil by cadmium and chromium

It is generally accepted that sulfur can passivate the bioavailability of heavy metals in soil, but it is not clear whether high sulfur in cadmium (Cd) and chromium (Cr) contaminated soil has negative effect on soil microbial community and ecological function. In this study, total sulfur (TS) inhibited the Chao 1, Shannon, Phylogenetic diversity (Pd) of bacterial and Pd of fungi in slightly contaminated soil by Cd and Cr around pyrite. TS, total potassium, pH, total chromium, total cadmium, total nitrogen, soil organic matter were the predominant factors for soil microbial community; the contribution of TS in shaping bacterial and fungal communities ranked at first and fifth, respectively. Compared with the low sulfur group, the abundance of sulfur sensitive microorganisms Gemmatimonas, Pseudolabrys, MND1, and Schizothecium were decreased by 68.79-97.22% (p < 0.01) at high sulfur one; the carbon fixation, nitrogen cycling, phosphorus cycling and resistance genes abundance were significantly lower (p < 0.01) at the latter. Such variations were strongly and closely correlated to the suppression of energy metabolism (M00009, M00011, M00086) and carbon fixation (M00173, M00376) functional module genes abundance in the high sulfur group. Collectively, high sulfur significantly suppressed the abundances of functional microorganisms and functional genes in slightly contaminated soil with Cd and Cr, possibly through inhibition of energy metabolism and carbon fixation of functional microorganisms. This study provided new insights into the environmental behavior of sulfur in slightly contaminated soil with Cd and Cr.

Tidal flat microbial communities between the Huaihe estuary and Yangtze River estuary

Tidal flats have important ecological functions and offer great economic value. Using field sampling, numerical simulation, and high-throughput sequencing, the ecological state of typical tidal flats along the eastern coast of China was investigated. The findings demonstrated that the area may be separated into subregions with notable differences in the features of microbial communities due to the variations in water quality and total pollutant discharge of seagoing rivers. With a ratio of 62%, the development of the microbial community revealed that homogenous selection predominated. In general, the formation of microbial communities follows deterministic processes, especially those of environmental selection. The wetland microbial communities are impacted by pollutants discharged into the sea from the Huaihe River and the Yangtze River. The Yangtze River's nitrogen pollutants affected the wetland zone, and denitrification dominated. The study established ecological patterns between the river and the sea and we offer suggestions for managing watersheds and safeguarding the ecology of coastal tidal flats.

Response of dissolved organic matter (DOM) and microbial community to submerged macrophytes restoration in lakes: A review

Microorganisms play a crucial role in the biogeochemical processes of Dissolved Organic Matter (DOM), and the properties of DOM also significantly influence changes in microbial community characteristics. This interdependent relationship is vital for the flow of matter and energy within aquatic ecosystems. The presence, growth state, and community characteristics of submerged macrophytes determine the susceptibility of lakes to eutrophication, and restoring a healthy submerged macrophyte community is an effective way to address this issue. However, the transition from eutrophic lakes dominated by planktic algae to medium or low trophic lakes dominated by submerged macrophytes involves significant changes. Changes in aquatic vegetation have greatly affected the source, composition, and bioavailability of DOM. The adsorption and fixation functions of submerged macrophytes determine the migration and storage of DOM and other substances from water to sediment. Submerged macrophytes regulate the characteristics and distribution of microbial communities by controlling the distribution of carbon sources and nutrients in the lake. They further affect the characteristics of the microbial community in the lake environment through their unique epiphytic microorganisms. The unique process of submerged macrophyte recession or restoration can alter the DOM-microbial interaction pattern in lakes through its dual effects on DOM and microbial commu-----nities, ultimately changing the stability of carbon and mineralization pathways in lakes, such as the release of methane and other greenhouse gases. This review provides a fresh perspective on the dynamic changes of DOM and the role of the microbiome in the future of lake ecosystems.

Network Analysis Indicates Microbial Assemblage Differences in Life Stages of Cladophora

Cladophora represents a microscopic forest that provides many ecological niches and fosters a diverse microbiota. However, the microbial community on Cladophora in brackish lakes is still poorly understood. In this study, the epiphytic bacterial communities of Cladophora in Qinghai Lake were investigated at three life stages (attached, floating, and decomposing). We found that in the attached stage, Cladophora was enriched with chemoheterotrophic and aerobic microorganisms, including Yoonia-Loktanella and Granulosicoccus. The proportion of phototrophic bacteria was higher in the floating stage, especially Cyanobacteria. The decomposing stage fostered an abundance of bacteria that showed vertical heterogeneity from the surface to the bottom. The surface layer of Cladophora contained mainly stress-tolerant chemoheterotrophic and photoheterotrophic bacteria, including Porphyrobacter and Nonlabens. The microbial community in the middle layer was similar to that of floating-stage Cladophora. Purple oxidizing bacteria were enriched in the bottom layer, with Candidatus Chloroploca, Allochromatium, and Thiocapsa as the dominant genera. The Shannon and Chao1 indices of epibiotic bacterial communities increased monotonically from the attached stage to the decomposing stage. Microbial community composition and functional predictions indicate that a large number of sulfur cycle-associated bacteria play an important role in the development of Cladophora. These results suggest that the microbial assemblage on Cladophora in a brackish lake is complex and contributes to the cycling of materials. IMPORTANCE Cladophora represents a microscopic forest that provides many ecological niches fostering a diverse microbiota, with a complex and intimate relationship between Cladophora and bacteria. Many studies have focused on the microbiology of freshwater Cladophora, but the composition and succession of microorganisms in different life stages of Cladophora, especially in brackish water, have not been explored. In this study, we investigated the microbial assemblages in the life stages of Cladophora in the brackish Qinghai Lake. We show that heterotrophic and photosynthetic autotrophic bacteria are enriched in attached and floating Cladophora, respectively, whereas the epiphytic bacterial community shows vertical heterogeneity in decomposing mats.

The Influence of Host Specificity and Temperature on Bacterial Communities Associated with Sargassum (Phaeophyceae) Species

Host-related microbiota are critically important for the adaptation/acclimation of hosts to changing environments, but how environmental factors and host characteristics shape the microbial communities remains largely unknown. We investigated the effects of temperature on habitat-forming macroalgae and their associated bacterial communities. Three Sargassum species (S. horneri, S. fusiforme, and S. thunbergii) and seawater samples were sampled in Gouqi Island, China, and these macroalgal samples were incubated at different temperatures (10, 20, and 27°C) for 7 d. Bacterial communities were identified from the 16S rRNA gene V3-V4 regions. The algae-associated bacterial communities of the field samples were significantly different from seawater, implying host specificity. During laboratory incubation, decreased physiological status (photosynthetic rate and oxidative stress response) was detected for all the species at 10°C, especially with regard to S. horneri and S. fusiforme. For each host, associated bacterial communities at 20 and 27°C clustered closely, and these were separated from samples at 10°C based on constrained PCoA analyses. Permutational multivariate analysis of variance revealed that algae-associated bacterial communities were more affected by host species (23.3%) than by temperature (2.48%) during laboratory incubation. The changes in bacterial community composition may be influenced by algae metabolites, which should be tested in a future study. These results further contribute to our understanding of algal microbiome changes in response to environmental changes.

The distribution and ecological risks of antibiotics in the sediments from a diverging area of the bifurcated river: Effects of hydrological properties

The hydrodynamics in the diverging area become complicated because of the basin hydrological conditions, making the distribution of antibiotics largely uncertain and thus bringing uncertain ecological risks of antibiotics. Through field sampling, experiments and numerical simulations, the distribution of antibiotics, its responses to hydrological conditions were studied. Antibiotics in the bifurcated river sediments was mainly distributed in the branch mouth. The hydrodynamic regions were affected by the hydrological frequency. Notably, the center of the low-velocity area moved upstream and gradually expands to the entire tributary as the hydrological frequency shifted from high to low. ENRO (enrofloxacin) and OFC (ofloxacin) were the key hazardous antibiotics affecting the ecological health in the diverging area, and their concentrations are mainly affected by sediment particle size (D < 0.15 mm) and oxygen content. The ecological risk of antibiotics in the diverging area were gradually decreased with the increase of the distance from the central area. The water physical and chemical properties, altered by the river basin hydrological conditions, play an important role in influencing the distribution of antibiotic concentrations, and ultimately posing great threat to aquatic ecosystem. The research provides a scientific basis for antibiotic risk control in the diverging area under different hydrological conditions.
