Sludge biodrying coupled with photocatalysis improves the degradation of extracellular polymeric substances

New insights into mechanism of enhancing biogas residue dewaterability using carbon quantum dots and biochar composites under visible light through electrochemical approach

This study investigated the treatment of biogas residue using a catalytic activation system with carbon quantum dots/biochar (CQDs/BC) and H2O2, driven by visible light. Results indicated that the charge transfer resistance (Rct) of CQDs/BC was 74.5 % lower than that of CQDs, with improved charge separation rates and enhanced light absorption. In the CQDs/BC + H2O2 system, relative capillary suction time (CST/CST0) and water content of biogas residue cake (Wc) decreased by 56.6 % and 8.9 % compared to control groups, respectively. CQDs/BC generated photogenerated electrons (e-) and holes (h+) under visible light, converted oxygen species, including ·OH, ·O2-, and 1O2, and considerably improved the oxidizing capacity of the system. The Rct of the treated biogas residue was 62.2 % lower than that of the original biogas residue and showed a significant correlation with Wc (r = 1.0, p < 0.001). These findings underscored that biogas residue Rct can be used as an indicative parameter of its dewatering performance.

Machine learning modeling of thermally assisted biodrying process for municipal sludge

Preparation of activated carbons is an important way to utilize municipal sludge (MS) resources, while drying is a pretreatment method for making activated carbons from MS. In this study, machine learning techniques were used to develop moisture ratio (MR) and composting temperature (CT) prediction models for the thermally assisted biodrying process of MS. First, six machine learning (ML) models were used to construct the MR and CT prediction models, respectively. Then the hyperparameters of the ML models were optimized using the Bayesian optimization algorithm, and the prediction performances of these models after optimization were compared. Finally, the effect of each input feature on the model was also evaluated using SHapley Additive exPlanations (SHAP) analysis and Partial Dependence Plots (PDPs) analysis. The results showed that Gaussian process regression (GPR) was the best model for predicting MR and CT, with R2 of 0.9967 and 0.9958, respectively, and root mean square errors (RMSE) of 0.0059 and 0.354 ℃. In addition, graphical user interface software was developed to facilitate the use of the GPR model for predicting MR and CT by researchers and engineers. This study contributes to the rapid prediction, improvement, and optimization of MR and CT during thermally assisted biodrying of MS, and also provides valuable guidance for the dynamic regulation of the drying process.

Pulp-paper industry sludge waste biorefinery for sustainable energy and value-added products development: A systematic valorization towards waste management

The pulp-paper industry is one of the main industrial sectors that produce massive amounts of residual sludge, constituting an enormous environmental burden for the industries. Traditional sludge management practices, such as landfilling and incineration, are restricted due to mounting environmental pressures, complex regulatory frameworks, land availability, high costs, and public opinion. Valorization of pulp-paper industry sludge (PPS) to produce high-value products is a promising substitute for traditional sludge management practices, promoting their reuse and recycling. Valorization of PPIS for biorefinery beneficiation includes biomethane, biohydrogen, bioethanol, biobutanol, and biodiesel production for renewable energy generation. Additionally, the various thermo-chemical technologies can be utilized to synthesize bio-oil, hydrochar, biochar, adsorbent, and activated carbon, signifying potential for value-added generation. Moreover, PPIS can be recycled as a byproduct by incorporating it into nanocomposites, cardboard, and construction materials development. This paper aims to deliver a comprehensive overview of PPIS management approaches and thermo-chemical technologies utilized for the development of platform chemicals in industry. Substitute uses of PPIS, such as making building materials, developing supercapacitors, and making cardboard, are also discussed. In addition, this article deeply discusses recent developments in biotechnologies for valorizing PPIS to yield an array of valuable products, such as biofuels, lactic acids, cellulose, nanocellulose, and so on. This review serves as a roadmap for future research endeavors in the effective handling of PPIS.

The synergistic regulation of sewage sludge biodrying and greenhouse gas reduction by additives

As a dewatering method of high moisture solid waste sludge, biodrying still faces environmental problems such as material loss and greenhouse gas emission in the process of treatment. In this study, biochar and magnesium chloride were used to explore the synergistic effect of enhancing sludge biodrying and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The highest temperature of biodrying was raised to 68.2 °C within 3 days, extending the longest high-temperature period to 5 days, which reduced the water content to 28.8 % in the single addition of biochar treatment. The complex addition increased the NH4+-N content of materials by 57.49 % and decreased the NO3--N content of materials by 40.62 %. The use of additives significantly reduced the emissions of CO2, CH4, and N2O compared to the no-addition treatment. The increase in dominant Actinomycetes and Chloroflexibacter was the main reason for the reduction in gas emissions.
