Abstract
This study investigated the morphology of Rhinella crucifer cutaneous glands, as well as the protein/peptide profiles and bioactivities of body gland secretions (BGS) and parotoid macrogland secretions (PS). The parotoid as well as dorsal and ventral skin fragments of male and female individuals were processed for histological analysis. The protein and peptide profiles of male and female gland secretions were evaluated. Male secretions were also assessed for proteolytic, trypsin inhibiting, hemagglutinating, hemolytic, antimicrobial, and anticoagulant activities. The R. crucifer skin structure presented protuberances that are clearly visible and formed by the integument, which has cutaneous glands throughout the body. An average of 438 and 333 glands were identified in males in females, respectively. No significant differences were observed in the distribution of glands across the body as well as for area and perimeter of glands. Differences were observed in protein composition between the PS and BGS from males and females, and secretions from animals collected from undisturbed and anthropogenically disturbed areas. Proteins with similarities to catalase and elongation factor 1-alpha were detected in the PS. Zymography revealed proteolytic activity in both male BGS and PS. Male BGS showed antibacterial activity against Enterococcus faecalis and Escherichia coli and anticoagulant activity, being able to prolong prothrombin time by 6.34-fold and activated partial thromboplastin time by 2.17-fold. Finally, male PS and BGS caused a maximum hemolysis degree of 1.4%. The data showed that the cutaneous secretions of R. crucifer are potentially promising for biotechnological prospecting.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Acupuncture is one of the most popular modalities used to treat various diseases in traditional Korean and Oriental medicine. However, its risk of adverse events can be easily overlooked. OBJECTIVE We investigated dermatological adverse events associated with acupuncture to draw attention to the risk of such adverse events. METHODS We evaluated the types of acupuncture, clinicopathologic diagnoses, treatments, and prognoses in patients with a causal relationship between acupuncture and dermatoses. RESULTS The study population comprised 25 patients (mean age, 52 years) with a history of acupuncture. Bee venom acupuncture was performed the most frequently (13 of 25 patients), and most patients received acupuncture to control pain (19 of 25 patients). The most common adverse event was infectious skin disease such as atypical mycobacterial infection or pyoderma/abscess, followed by hypersensitivity reactions, localized lipoatrophy, and hypertrophic scar. Acupuncture-related dermatoses required a relatively long treatment period (average, 8.6 weeks). CONCLUSION Various dermatoses may occur following acupuncture. To minimize the risk of these dermatoses, proper training and medical knowledge in acupuncture practice are necessary for medical personnel. Dermatologists, oriental medical practitioners, and patients should pay attention to the potential adverse events of acupuncture.

Abstract
CONTEXT Notoginsenoside R1 (NGR1) is the main component with cardiovascular activity in Panax notoginseng (Burk.) F. H. Chen, an herbal medicine that is widely used to enhance blood circulation and dissipate blood stasis. OBJECTIVE The objective of this study is to investigate NGR1's effects on CYP1A2, CYP2C11, CYP2D1, and CYP3A1/2 activities in rats in vivo through the use of the Cytochrome P450 (CYP450) probe drugs. MATERIALS AND METHODS After pretreatment with NGR1 or physiological saline, the rats were administered intraperitoneally with a mixture solution of cocktail probe drugs containing caffeine (10 mg/kg), tolbutamide (15 mg/kg), metoprolol (20 mg/kg), and dapsone (10 mg/kg). The bloods were then collected at a set of time-points for the ultra-performance liquid chromatography/tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS/MS) analysis. RESULTS NGR1 was shown to exhibit an inhibitory effect on CYP1A2 by increased caffeine Cmax (43.13%, p < 0.01) and AUC0 - ∞ (40.57%, p < 0.01), and decreased CL/F (62.16%, p < 0.01) in the NGR1-treated group compared with those of the control group, but no significant changes in pharmacokinetic parameters of tolbutamide, metoprolol, and dapsone were observed between the two groups, indicating that NGR1 had no effects on rat CYP2C11, CYP2D1, and CYP3A1/2. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION When NGR1 is co-administered with drugs that are metabolized by CYP1A2, the pertinent potential herb-drug interactions should be monitored.

Abstract
ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE Cytotoxicity and hemolysis of saponins were the characteristic activities. Many researches have been devoted to the synthesis of saponins devoid of the hemolysis by structure-activity relationship studies. However, saponins contained in the plants were not fully researched on the two activities such as Parissteroidal saponins. Paris steroidal saponins as the active compounds of Paris plants have multiple effects. MATERIALS AND METHODS In the present study, we investigated the cytotoxicity and hemolytic activity of Paris plants collected from twelve places in China. The contents of nine known steroidal saponins in the plants were determined simultaneously using HPLC-ELSD method. The two activities are not related to the contents of saponins. RESULTS As the results of hemolysis of saponins shown, the hemolysis was positive related to the sugar chain. The membrane toxicity suggested that the integration of saponins with the membrane in erythrocyte was correlated to the kinds of saponins and the hemolysis of disosgenyl saponins were stronger than that of pennogenyl glycosides. CONCLUSIONS These results provided information about the hemolysis and cytotoxicity of Paris steroidal saponins, which may be useful for their synthesis devoid of hemolysis toxicity.

Abstract
ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE The rhizoma of Paris polyphylla var. yannanensis or P. polyphylla var. chinensis called Rhizoma Paridis as a traditional Chinese medicine has an effect of heat-clearing and detoxicating, detumescence and acesodyne in folk for a long time. The increasing application of Rhizoma Paridis resulted in the shortage of wildlife resources. Here, we compared the major activities of other species of genus Paris to find the replacement plants. MATERIALS AND METHODS Six species (P. polyphylla var. yunnanensis, P. delavayi var. delavayi, P. fargesii var. Fargesii, P. bashanensis Wang et Tang, P. polyphyllar var. minora, and P. polyphylla var. pseudothibetical) were collected from three Provinces in China, and compared the hemostatic, cytotoxic and hemolytic activities by different assays. RESULTS For the hemostatic activity, all the plants except Paris fargesii var. Fargesii could significantly shorten the tail bleeding time and blood clotting time (P<0.05). For further mechanism study, they reduced the prothrombin time (PT) and activated partial thromboplastin time (APTT), but they had no significant effect on thrombin time (TT). P. fargesii var. Fargesii showed the similar cytotoxicity to P. polyphylla var. yunnanensis (IC(50): 18.21 and 15.73 μg/mL, respectively). HD(50) was used as the index of hemolytic activity. P. delavayi var. delavayi and P. bashanensis Wang et Tang were the last to have this activity as the values were 3.027 and 1.222 mg/mL. CONCLUSIONS The different species of genus Paris have different activities. Paris delavayi var. delavayi and Paris bashanensis Wang et Tang could be used as the resources of hemostatic drugs and P. fargesii var. Fargesii as the antitumor medicine.
