Biochar-based materials as remediation strategy in petroleum hydrocarbon-contaminated soil and water: Performances, mechanisms, and environmental impact

Environmental applications and risks of engineered nanomaterials in removing petroleum oil in soil

Oil-contaminated soil posed serious threats to the ecosystems and human health. The unique and tunable properties of engineered nanomaterials (ENMs) enable new technologies for removing and repairing oil-contaminated soil. However, few studies systematically examined the linkage between the change of physicochemical properties and the removal efficiency and environmental functions (e.g., potential risk) of ENMs, which is vital for understanding the ENMs environmental sustainability and utilization as a safety product. Thus, this review briefly summarized the environmental applications of ENMs to removing petroleum oil from complex soil systems: Theoretical and practical fundamentals (e.g., excellent physicochemical properties, environmental stability, controlled release, and recycling technologies), and various ENMs (e.g., iron-based, carbon-based, and metal oxides nanomaterials) remediation case studies. Afterward, this review highlights the removing mechanism (e.g., adsorption, photocatalysis, oxidation/reduction, biodegradation) and the impact factor (e.g., nanomaterials species, natural organic matter, and soil matrix) of ENMs during the remediation process in soil ecosystems. Both positive and negative effects of ENMs on terrestrial organisms have been identified, which are mainly derived from their diverse physicochemical properties. In linking nanotechnology applications for repairing oil-contaminated soil back to the physical and chemical properties of ENMs, this critical review aims to raise the research attention on using ENMs as a fundamental guide or even tool to advance soil treatment technologies.

Review on biochar as a sustainable green resource for the rehabilitation of petroleum hydrocarbon-contaminated soil

Petroleum pollution is one of the primary threats to the environment and public health. Therefore, it is essential to create new strategies and enhance current ones. The process of biological reclamation, which utilizes a biological agent to eliminate harmful substances from polluted soil, has drawn much interest. Biochars are inexpensive, environmentally beneficial carbon compounds extensively employed to remove petroleum hydrocarbons from the environment. Biochar has demonstrated an excellent capability to remediate soil pollutants because of its abundant supply of the required raw materials, sustainability, affordability, high efficacy, substantial specific surface area, and desired physical-chemical surface characteristics. This paper reviews biochar's methods, effectiveness, and possible toxic effects on the natural environment, amended biochar, and their integration with other remediating materials towards sustainable remediation of petroleum-polluted soil environments. Efforts are being undertaken to enhance the effectiveness of biochar in the hydrocarbon-based rehabilitation approach by altering its characteristics. Additionally, the adsorption, biodegradability, chemical breakdown, and regenerative facets of biochar amendment and combined usage culminated in augmenting the remedial effectiveness. Lastly, several shortcomings of the prevailing methods and prospective directions were provided to overcome the constraints in tailored biochar studies for long-term performance stability and ecological sustainability towards restoring petroleum hydrocarbon adultered soil environments.

Removal of environmental pollutants using biochar: current status and emerging opportunities

In recent times, biochar has emerged as a novel approach for environmental remediation due to its exceptional adsorption capacity, attributed to its porous structure formed by the pyrolysis of biomass at elevated temperatures in oxygen-restricted conditions. This characteristic has driven its widespread use in environmental remediation to remove pollutants. When biochar is introduced into ecosystems, it usually changes the makeup of microbial communities by offering a favorable habitat. Its porous structure creates a protective environment that shields them from external pressures. Consequently, microorganisms adhering to biochar surfaces exhibit increased resilience to environmental conditions, thereby enhancing their capacity to degrade pollutants. During this process, pollutants are broken down into smaller molecules through the collaborative efforts of biochar surface groups and microorganisms. Biochar is also often used in conjunction with composting techniques to enhance compost quality by improving aeration and serving as a carrier for slow-release fertilizers. The utilization of biochar to support sustainable agricultural practices and combat environmental contamination is a prominent area of current research. This study aims to examine the beneficial impacts of biochar application on the absorption and breakdown of contaminants in environmental and agricultural settings, offering insights into its optimization for enhanced efficacy.

Biochar from olive tree twigs and spent malt rootlets as electrodes in Zn-air batteries

Biochars, i.e. porous carbons obtained by pyrolysis of biomass, can act as electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution and oxygen reduction reaction. In the present work, two biochars have been prepared by using materials of completely different biomass origin: olive-tree twigs and spent malt rootlets (brewery wastes). Both biomass species were subjected to pyrolysis under limited oxygen supply and then they were activated by mixing with KOH and pyrolysis again. The obtained biochars were characterized by several techniques in order to determine their structural characteristics and the composition of their active components. Despite their different origin, the two biochars demonstrated similar structural and compositional characteristics thus highlighting the importance of the pyrolysis and activation procedure. Both biochars were used as electrocatalysts in the operation of rechargeable Zn-air batteries, where they also demonstrated similar electrocatalytic capacities with only a small advantage gained by olive-tree-twigs biochar. Compared to bare nanoparticulate carbon (carbon black), both biochars demonstrated a marked advantage towards oxygen evolution reaction.

Recent Advances in Porous Bio-Polymer Composites for the Remediation of Organic Pollutants

The increasing awareness of the importance of a clean and sustainable environment, coupled with the rapid growth of both population and technology, has instilled in people a strong inclination to address the issue of wastewater treatment. This global concern has prompted individuals to prioritize the proper management and purification of wastewater. Organic pollutants are very persistent and due to their destructive effects, it is necessary to remove them from wastewater. In the last decade, porous organic polymers (POPs) have garnered interest among researchers due to their effectiveness in removing various types of pollutants. Porous biopolymers seem to be suitable candidates among POPs. Sustainable consumption and environmental protection, as well as reducing the consumption of toxic chemicals, are the advantages of using biopolymers in the preparation of effective composites to remove pollutants. Composites containing porous biopolymers, like other POPs, can remove various pollutants through absorption, membrane filtration, or oxidative and photocatalytic effects. Although composites based on porous biopolymers shown relatively good performance in removing pollutants, their insufficient strength limits their performance. On the other hand, in comparison with other POPs, including covalent organic frameworks, they have weaker performance. Therefore, porous organic biopolymers are generally used in composites with other compounds. Therefore, it seems necessary to research the performance of these composites and investigate the reasons for using composite components. This review exhaustively investigates the recent progress in the use of composites containing porous biopolymers in the removal of organic pollutants in the form of adsorbents, membranes, catalysts, etc. Information regarding the mechanism, composite functionality, and the reasons for using each component in the construction of composites are discussed. The following provides a vision of future opportunities for the preparation of porous composites from biopolymers.

Exploring zeolite-based composites in adsorption and photocatalysis for toxic wastewater treatment: Preparation, mechanisms, and future perspectives

Water scarcity has become a critical global concern exacerbated by population growth, globalization, and industrial expansion, resulting in the production of wastewater containing a wide array of contaminants. Tackling this challenge necessitates the adoption of innovative materials and technologies for effective wastewater treatment. This review article provides a comprehensive exploration of the preparation, applications, mechanisms, and economic environmental analysis of zeolite-based composites in wastewater treatment. Zeolite, renowned for its versatility and porous nature, is of paramount importance due to its exceptional properties, including high surface area, ion exchange capability, and adsorption capacity. Various synthetic methods for zeolite-based composites are discussed. The utilization of zeolites in wastewater treatment, particularly in adsorption and photocatalysis, is thoroughly investigated. The significance of zeolite in adsorption and its role in the photocatalytic degradation of pollutants are examined, along with its applications in treating volatile organic compounds (VOCs), dye wastewater, oil-field wastewater, and radioactive waste. Mechanisms underlying zeolite-based adsorption and photocatalysis, including physical and chemical adsorption, ion exchange, and surface modification, are elucidated. Additionally, the role of micropores in the adsorption process is explored. Furthermore, the review delves into regeneration and desorption studies of zeolite-based composites, crucial for sustainable wastewater treatment practices. Economic and environmental analyses are conducted to assess the feasibility and sustainability of employing zeolite-based composites in wastewater treatment applications. Future recommendations are provided to guide further research and development in the field of zeolite-based composites, aiming to enhance wastewater treatment efficiency and environmental sustainability. By exploring the latest advancements and insights into zeolite-based nanocomposites, this paper aims to contribute to the development of more efficient and sustainable wastewater treatment strategies. The integration of zeolite-based materials in wastewater treatment processes shows promise for mitigating water pollution and addressing water scarcity challenges, ultimately contributing to environmental preservation and public health protection.

Effects of biochar immobilization of Serratia sp. F4 OR414381 on bioremediation of petroleum contamination and bacterial community composition in loess soil

Petroleum hydrocarbons pose a significant threat to human health and the environment. Biochar has increasingly been utilized for soil remediation. This study investigated the potential of biochar immobilization using Serratia sp. F4 OR414381 for the remediation of petroleum-contaminated soil through a pot experiment conducted over 90 days. The treatments in this study, denoted as IMs (maize straw biochar-immobilized Serratia sp. F4), degraded 82.5% of the total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH), 59.23% of the aromatic, and 90.1% of the saturated hydrocarbon fractions in the loess soils. During remediation, the soil pH values decreased from 8.76 to 7.33, and the oxidation-reduction potential (ORP) increased from 156 to 229 mV. The treatment-maintained soil nutrients of the IMs were 138.94 mg/kg of NO3- -N and 92.47 mg/kg of available phosphorus (AP), as well as 11.29% of moisture content. The activities of soil dehydrogenase (SDHA) and catalase (CAT) respectively increased by 14% and 15 times compared to the CK treatment. Three key petroleum hydrocarbon degradation genes, including CYP450, AJ025, and xylX were upregulated following IMs treatment. Microbial community analysis revealed that a substantial microbial population of 1.01E+ 09 cells/g soil and oil-degrading bacteria such as Salinimicrobium, Saccharibacteria_genera_incertae_sedis, and Brevundimonas were the dominant genera in IMs treatment. This suggests that the biochar immobilized on Serratia sp. F4 OR414381 improves soil physicochemical properties and enhances interactions among microbial populations, presenting a promising and environmentally friendly approach for the stable and efficient remediation of petroleum-contaminated loess soil.

Carbon-based adsorbents for the mitigation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon: a review of recent research

Accumulation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) poses significant dangers to the environment and human health. The advancement of technology for cleaning up PAH-contaminated environments is receiving more attention. Adsorption is the preferred and most favorable approach for cleaning up sediments polluted with PAH. Due to their affordability and environmental friendliness, carbonaceous adsorbents (CAs) have been regarded as promising for adsorbing PAH. However, adsorbent qualities, environmental features, and factors may all significantly impact how well CAs remove PAH. According to growing data, CAs, most of which come from laboratory tests, may be utilized to decontaminate PAH in aquatic setups. However, their full potential has not yet been established, especially concerning field applications. This review aims to concisely summarize recent developments in CA, PAH stabilization processes, and essential field application-controlling variables. This review analysis emphasizes activated carbon, biochar, Graphene, carbon nanotubes, and carbon-nanomaterials composite since these CAs are most often utilized as adsorbents for PAH in aquatic systems.

A review of microbial responses to biochar addition in anaerobic digestion system: Community, cellular and genetic level findings

The biochar is a well-developed porous material with various excellent properties, that has been proven with excellent ability in anaerobic digestion (AD) efficiency promotion. Current research is usually focused on the macro effects of biochar on AD, while the systematic review about the mechanisms of biochar on microbial behavior are still lacking. This review summarizes the effects and potential mechanisms of biochar on microorganisms in AD systems, and found that biochar addition can provide habitats for microbial colonization, alleviate toxins stress, supply essential nutrients, and accelerate interspecies electron transferring. Moreover, it also improves microbial community diversity, facilitates EPS secretion, enhances functional enzyme activity, promotes functional genes expression, and inhibits the antibiotic resistance genes transformation. Future research directions including biochar targeted design, in-depth microbial mechanisms revelation, and modified model development were suggested, which could promote the widely practical application of of biochar-amended AD technology.

A new solvent-free pathway for inducing quaternized lignin-derived high molecular weight polymer

In this work, kraft lignin (KL) was polymerized with vinylbenzyl chloride (VBC) in a molar ratio of 1.8:1 (KL: VBC) using sodium persulfate (Na2S2O8) as an initiator at pH 9-10 and temperature of 80-90 °C for 3 h to produce polymer kraft lignin-g-poly(4-vinylbenzyl chloride) KL-poly(VBC) 1. Then, the grafting reaction was conducted with two different imidazole-based monomers of different side-chain lengths (methyl and n-butyl), namely, 1-methylimidazole (MIM), 1-n-butylimidazole (BIM), which led to the formation of novel polymers, kraft lignin-g-poly(4-vinylbenzyl-1-methylimidazolium chloride) KL-poly(VBC-MIM) 2a and kraft lignin-g-poly(4-vinylbenzyl-1-n-butyl imidazolium chloride) KL-poly(VBC-BIM) 2b. The polymer 2a generated a larger molecular weight polymer with a higher charge density and solubility than polymer 2b since the n-butyl group would cause steric hindrance and weaker monomer to react with intermediate polymer 1 in the second stage. The contact angle analysis confirmed more hydrophilicity of polymer 2a, and elemental analysis confirmed the more successful polymerization of polymer 2a. Applying the generated polymers as flocculants for a kaolin suspension confirmed that polymer 2a had similar performance with commercial cationic polyacrylamide (CPAM) flocculants, even though polymer 2a had a smaller molecular weight. This polymerization offers a promising pathway for generating cationic polymers with excellent performance as a flocculant for suspensions.

Recent progress in the production and application of biochar and its composite in environmental biodegradation

Over the past few decades, extensive research has been conducted to develop cost-effective and high-quality biochar for environmental biodegradation purposes. Pyrolysis has emerged as a promising method for recovering biochar from biomass and waste materials. This study provides an overview of the current state-of-the-art biochar production technology, including the advancements and biochar applications in organic pollutants remediation, particularly wastewater treatment. Substantial progress has been made in biochar production through advanced thermochemical technologies. Moreover, the review underscores the importance of understanding the kinetics of pollutant degradation using biochar to maximize its synergies for potential environmental biodegradation. Finally, the study identifies the technological gaps and outlines future research advancements in biochar production and its applications for environmental biodegradation.
