Headspace solvent microextraction-gas chromatographic thermionic specific detector determination of amitraz in honey after hydrolysis to 2,4-dimethylaniline

Development of a sensitive electrochemical method to determine amitraz based on perylene tetracarboxylic acid/mesoporous carbon/Nafion@SPCEs

A cutting-edge electrochemical method is presented for precise quantification of amitraz (AMZ), a commonly used acaricide in veterinary medicine and agriculture. Leveraging a lab-made screen-printed carbon electrode modified with a synergistic blend of perylene tetracarboxylic acid (PTCA), mesoporous carbon (MC), and Nafion, the sensor's sensitivity was significantly improved. Fine-tuning of PTCA, MC, and Nafion ratios, alongside optimization of the pH of the supporting electrolyte and accumulation time, resulted in remarkable sensitivity enhancements. The sensor exhibited a linear response within the concentration range 0.01 to 0.70 μg mL-1, boasting an exceptionally low limit of detection of 0.002 μg mL-1 and a limit of quantification of 0.10 μg mL-1, surpassing maximum residue levels permitted in honey, tomato, and longan samples. Validation with real samples demonstrated high recoveries ranging from 80.8 to 104.8%, with a relative standard deviation below 10%, affirming the method's robustness and precision. The modified PTCA/MC/Nafion@SPCE-based electrochemical sensor not only offers superior sensitivity but also simplicity and cost-effectiveness, making it a pivotal tool for accurate AMZ detection in food samples. Furthermore, beyond the scope of this study, the sensor presents promising prospects for wider application across various electrochemical analytical fields, thereby significantly contributing to food safety and advancing agricultural practices.

Polypyrrole coated ZnO nanorods on platinum wire for solid-phase microextraction of amitraz and teflubenzuron pesticides prior to quantitation by GC-MS

The authors describe a new sorbent for amitraz and teflubenzuron pesticides. It consists of a platinum wire coated with polypyrrole-coated ZnO nanorods. The nanocomposite was prepared by a two-step process. In the first step, oriented ZnO nanorods were hydrothermally grown in situ on a platinum wire. Subsequently, oxidative vapor phase polymerization of pyrrole was performed on FeCl₃-impregnated ZnO nanorods to give a porous polypyrrole film. The organic/inorganic nanocomposite synthesized through hydrothermal deposition and chemical vapor deposition polymerization yields material with attractive properties. The coated wire was applied to solid-phase microextraction of amitraz (in the form of 2,4-dimethylaniline resulting from the hydrolysis of amitraz) and teflubenzuron. The effects of extraction temperature, extraction time, sample pH value and salt concentration were optimized. The analytes 2,4-dimethylaniline and teflubenzuron were then quantified by GC-MS. Under optimum conditions, the LODs range between 0.1 and 0.15 ng.mL^-1. Relative standard deviations at two concentration are <8.3% for intraday precision and <10.3% for inter-day precision. In all cases, the fiber to fiber reproducibility is <12.2%. For both analytes the linear dynamic ranges are 0.5-300 ng.mL^-1. The procedure was successfully applied to the analysis of spiked agricultural water samples. Graphical abstract A novel inorganic/organic hybrid nanocomposite was synthesized through in situ hydrothermal deposition of ZnO nanorods and ten placing a thin layer of polypyrrole on them by chemical vapor deposition polymerization. This nanocomposite was applied to fabricate a solid-phase microextraction fiber for the extraction of amitraz and teflubenzuron pesticides residue from agricultural samples prior to their quantitation by GC-MS.

The exposure of honey bees (Apis mellifera; Hymenoptera: Apidae) to pesticides: Room for improvement in research

Losses of honey bees have been repeatedly reported from many places worldwide. The widespread use of synthetic pesticides has led to concerns regarding their environmental fate and their effects on pollinators. Based on a standardised review, we report the use of a wide variety of honey bee matrices and sampling methods in the scientific papers studying pesticide exposure. Matrices such as beeswax and beebread were very little analysed despite their capacities for long-term pesticide storage. Moreover, bioavailability and transfer between in-hive matrices were poorly understood and explored. Many pesticides were studied but interactions between molecules or with other stressors were lacking. Sampling methods, targeted matrices and units of measure should have been, to some extent, standardised between publications to ease comparison and cross checking. Data on honey bee exposure to pesticides would have also benefit from the use of commercial formulations in experiments instead of active ingredients, with a special assessment of co-formulants (quantitative exposure and effects). Finally, the air matrix within the colony must be explored in order to complete current knowledge on honey bee pesticide exposure.

Validação de método analítico para análise de amitraz em mel utilizando GC/TSD

Este artigo descreve a validação de método analítico para determinação do acaricida amitraz em mel utilizando extração com n-hexano/acetona, cleanup em cartucho de extração em fase sólida (SPE) e análise por cromatografia a gás com detector termoiônico seletivo (GC-TSD). O método pode ser utilizado para monitorar a presença do pesticida amitraz em mel, devido aos bons parâmetros analíticos, precisão (CV<11%) e exatidão (>80%) dentro do intervalo 100-400 ng g-1. O limite estabelecido na União Européia, pelo Committee for Veterinary Medicinal Products, para amitraz em mel (200 ng g-1) está dentro deste intervalo. A resposta do sistema analítico apresentou linearidade entre 100 e 800 ng mL-1 com coeficiente de correlação de 0,9996, limite de detecção (LD-7 ng g-1) e de quantificação (LQ-100 ng g-1). O método validado foi utilizado para avaliar a qualidade de méis comercializados na cidade de Araraquara/SP, nas quais não foram detectados resíduos de amitraz.

Study on the performance of the headspace liquid-phase microextraction, gas chromatography-mass spectrometry in the determination of sorbic and benzoic acids in soft drinks and environmental water samples

A simple, efficient and virtually solventless headspace liquid-phase microextraction (HS-LPME) technique, combined with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS), was developed for the analysis of sorbic acid (SA) and benzoic acid (BA) in soft drinks and environmental water samples. A microdrop of organic solvent was suspended from the tip of a microsyringe needle over the headspace of the stirred sample solution, containing the analytes for a desired time. The microdrop was then retracted into the microsyringe and directly injected into the GC-MS, without any further pretreatment. Initially, microextraction efficiency factors were optimized, and the optimum experimental conditions found were as follows: 2.5 microL toluene microdrop exposed for 20 min over the headspace of a 6.5 mL aqueous sample (45 degrees C), containing 3 M of NaCl with pH of 1.5 and stirred at 1000 rpm. Under the optimized extraction conditions, preconcentration factors of 154 and 198, limits of detection of 0.3 and 0.1 microg L(-1) (S/N=3) with dynamic linear ranges of 1-500 and 0.5-500 microg L(-1), were obtained for SA and BA respectively. A good repeatability (RSD<10.3%, n=8) and satisfactory linearity (r(2) >or= 0.99) of results were achieved. The accuracy of the method was tested by the relative recovery experiments on spiked samples, with results ranging from 90 to 113%. The method proved to be rapid and cost-effective and is a green procedure for screening purposes.
