Abstract
Limosilactobacillus fermentum strain 3872 (LF3872) was originally isolated from the breast milk of a healthy woman during lactation and the breastfeeding of a child. Ligilactobacillus salivarius strain 7247 (LS7247) was isolated at the same time from the intestines and reproductive system of a healthy woman. The genomes of these strains contain genes responsible for the production of peptidoglycan-degrading enzymes and factors that increase the permeability of the outer membrane of Gram-negative pathogens. In this work, the anti-Salmonella and intestinal homeostatic features of the LF3872 and LS7247 consortium were studied. A multi-drug resistant (MDR) strain of Salmonella enteritidis (SE) was used in the experiments. The consortium effectively inhibited the adhesion of SE to intact and activated human, porcine, and chicken enterocytes and reduced invasion. The consortium had a bactericidal effect on SE in 6 h of co-culturing. A gene expression analysis of SE showed that the cell-free supernatant (CFS) of the consortium inhibited the expression of virulence genes critical for the colonization of human and animal enterocytes. The CFS stimulated the production of an intestinal homeostatic factor-intestinal alkaline phosphatase (IAP)-in Caco-2 and HT-29 enterocytes. The consortium decreased the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines IL-8, TNF-α, and IL-1β, and TLR4 mRNA expression in human and animal enterocytes. It stimulated the expression of TLR9 in human and porcine enterocytes and stimulated the expression of TLR21 in chicken enterocytes. The consortium also protected the intestinal barrier functions through the increase of transepithelial electrical resistance (TEER) and the inhibition of paracellular permeability in the monolayers of human and animal enterocytes. The results obtained suggest that a LF3872 and LS7247 consortium can be used as an innovative feed additive to reduce the spread of MDR SE among the population and farm animals.

Abstract
Whey protein hydrolysate (WPH) has been shown to have a variety of bioactivities. This study aimed to investigate the preventive effect of WPH on dextran sodium sulfate (DSS)-induced colitis in C57BL/6J mice. The results indicated that WPH intervention for 37 days was effective in delaying the development of colonic inflammation, and high doses of WPH significantly inhibited weight loss (9.16%, n = 8, p < 0.05), protected the colonic mucosal layer, and significantly reduced the levels of inflammatory factors TNF-α, IL-6, and IL-1β in mice with colitis (n = 8, p < 0.05). In addition, WPH intervention was able to up-regulate the short-chain fatty acids secretion and restore the gut microbiome imbalance in mice with colitis. Notably, high-dose WPH intervention increased the relative abundance of norank_f_Muribaculaceae by 1.52-fold and decreased the relative abundance of Romboutsia and Enterobacter by 3.77-fold and 2.45-fold, respectively, compared with the Model group. WPH intervention protected colitis mice mainly by reversing the microbiome imbalance and regulating the major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class I pathway. This study showed that WPH has anti-inflammatory activity and a promising colitis management future.

Abstract
Probiotics have been shown to possess several properties, depending on the strain. Some probiotics have important roles in preventing infection and balancing the immune system due to the interaction between the intestinal mucosa and cells in the immune system. This study aimed to examine the properties of three probiotic strains using the tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) inhibition test in colorectal adenocarcinoma cells (Caco-2 cells). It was revealed that the viable cells and heat-killed cells of the probiotic L. paracasei strain MSMC39-1 dramatically suppressed TNF-α secretion in Caco-2 cells. The strongest strains were then chosen to treat rats with colitis induced by dextran sulfate sodium (DSS). Viable cells of the probiotic L. paracasei strain MSMC39-1 reduced aspartate transaminase and alanine transaminase in the serum and significantly inhibited TNF-α secretion in the colon and liver tissues. Treatment with the probiotic L. paracasei strain MSMC39-1 alleviated the colon and liver histopathology in DSS-induced colitis rats. Furthermore, supplementation with probiotic L. paracasei strain MSMC39-1 increased the genus Lactobacillus and boosted the other beneficial bacteria in the gut. Thus, the probiotic L. paracasei strain MSMC39-1 exhibited an anti-inflammation effect in the colon and modulated the gut microbiota.

Abstract
Sepsis-induced liver injury (SILI) is an important cause of septicemia deaths. BaWeiBaiDuSan (BWBDS) was extracted from a formula of Panax ginseng C. A. Meyer, Lilium brownie F. E. Brown ex Miellez var. viridulum Baker, Polygonatum sibiricum Delar. ex Redoute, Lonicera japonica Thunb., Hippophae rhamnoides Linn., Amygdalus Communis Vas, Platycodon grandiflorus (Jacq.) A. DC., and Cortex Phelloderdri. Herein, we investigated whether the BWBDS treatment could reverse SILI by the mechanism of modulating gut microbiota. BWBDS protected mice against SILI, which was associated with promoting macrophage anti-inflammatory activity and enhancing intestinal integrity. BWBDS selectively promoted the growth of Lactobacillus johnsonii (L. johnsonii) in cecal ligation and puncture treated mice. Fecal microbiota transplantation treatment indicated that gut bacteria correlated with sepsis and was required for BWBDS anti-sepsis effects. Notably, L. johnsonii significantly reduced SILI by promoting macrophage anti-inflammatory activity, increasing interleukin-10+ M2 macrophage production and enhancing intestinal integrity. Furthermore, heat inactivation L. johnsonii (HI-L. johnsonii) treatment promoted macrophage anti-inflammatory activity and alleviated SILI. Our findings revealed BWBDS and gut microbiota L. johnsonii as novel prebiotic and probiotic that may be used to treat SILI. The potential underlying mechanism was at least in part, via L. johnsonii-dependent immune regulation and interleukin-10+ M2 macrophage production.

Abstract
Objectives The intestinal microbiota is essential in absorbing nutrients and defending against pathogens and is associated with various diseases, including obesity, type 2 diabetes, and hypertension. As an alternative medicine, Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) has long been used in disease treatment and healthcare, partly because it may mediate gut microbiota. However, the specific effects of TCM on the abundance and interactions of microbiota remain unknown. Moreover, using TCM ingredients and data detailing changes in the abundance of gut microorganisms, we developed bioinformatic methods that decipher the impact of TCM on microorganism interactions. Methods The dynamics of gut microorganisms affected by TCM treatments is explored using a mouse model, which provided the abundance of 70 microorganisms over time. The Granger causality analysis was used to measure microorganism interactions. Novel "serial connection" and "diverging connection" models were used to identify molecular mechanisms underlying the impact of TCM on gut microorganism interactions, based on microorganism proteins, TCM chemical ingredients, and KEGG reaction equations. Results Codonopsis pilosula (Dangshen), Cassia twig (Gui Zhi), Radices saussureae (Mu Xiang), and Sijunzi Decoction did not cause an increase in the abundance of harmful microorganisms. Most TCMs decreased the abundance of Bifidobacterium pseudolongum, suggesting a Bifidobacterium pseudolongum supplement should be used during TCM treatment. The Granger causality analysis indicated that TCM treatment changes more than half the interactions between the 70 microorganisms, and "serial connection" and "diverging connection" models suggested that changes in interactions may be related to the reaction number connecting species proteins and TCM ingredients. From a species diversity perspective, a TCM decoction is better than a single herb for healthcare. The Sijunzi Decoction only significantly increased the abundance of Bifidobacterium pseudolongum and did not cause a decrease in the abundance of other species but was found to improve the alpha diversity with the lowest replacement rate. Conclusions Because most of the nine TCMs are medicinal and edible plants, we expect the methods and results presented can be used to optimize and integrate microbiota and TCMs into healthcare processes. Moreover, as a control study, these results can be combined with future disease mouse models to link variations in species abundance with particular diseases.

Abstract
SCOPE Regulating the gut microecology by probiotics is an efficient strategy to rational prevention and treatment of Alzheimer's disease (AD). However, there is currently a lack of well-known probiotic species in the protection against AD, and the involved mechanism has not been clearly interpreted. METHODS AND RESULTS Herein, Lactobacillus plantarum MA2 (MA2), a functional probiotic isolated from traditional Chinese Tibetan kefir grains, was demonstrated to improve the cognitive deficits and anxiety-like behaviors in the D-galactose/AlCl3 induced AD rats, and attenuate the neuronal degeneration and Aβ accumulation in the brain. Moreover, we found MA2 could alleviate the intestinal mucosal impairments, and impede the activation of microglia and neuroinflammation through TLR4/MYD88/NLRP3 signaling pathway. 16S rRNA sequencing and metabolomic analysis indicated that MA2 reshaped the gut microbiota structure and composition, and remarkably modulated the glycometabolism. In that case, the EPS (exopolysaccharides) that derived from MA2 was furtherly proved with inhibitory effects on the Aβ42 aggregation and amyloid-induced cytotoxicity. CONCLUSION MA2 or MA2 EPS may be used as functional food and nutritional supplement for regulating the gut microbiota and metabolism disorders in AD. Abstract
Gastrodiae Rhizoma and its active constituents are known to exhibit neuroprotective effects in Alzheimer’s disease (AD). However, the effect of Rhizoma Gastrodiae water extract (WERG) on AD and the detailed mechanism of action remain unclear. In this study, the mechanism of action of WERG was investigated by the microbiome–gut–brain axis using a D-galactose (D-gal)/AlCl3-induced AD mouse model. WERG improved the cognitive impairment of D-gal/AlCl3-induced mice. The expression level of p-Tauthr231 in the WERG-H treatment group was decreased, and p-Tauthr231 was found negative in hippocampal DG, CA1, and CA3 regions. Here, the diversity and composition of the gut microbiota were analyzed by 16sRNA sequencing. WERG-H treatment had a positive correlation with Firmicutes, Bacilli, Lactobacillus johnsonii, Lactobacillus murinus, and Lactobacillus reuteri. Interestingly, the Rikenellaceae-RC9 gut group in the gut increased in D-gal/AlCl3-induced mice, but the increased L. johnsonii, L. murinus, and L. reuteri reversed this process. This may be a potential mechanistic link between gut microbiota dysbiosis and P-TauThr231 levels in AD progression. In conclusion, this study demonstrated that WERG improved the cognitive impairment of the AD mouse model by enriching gut probiotics and reducing P-TauThr231 levels.

Abstract
Adult neurogenesis (i.e., the life-long generation of new neurons from undifferentiated neuronal precursors in the adult brain) may contribute to brain repair after damage, and participates in plasticity-related processes including memory, cognition, mood and sensory functions. Among the many intrinsic (oxidative stress, inflammation, and ageing), and extrinsic (environmental pollution, lifestyle, and diet) factors deemed to impact neurogenesis, significant attention has been recently attracted by the myriad of saprophytic microorganismal communities inhabiting the intestinal ecosystem and collectively referred to as the gut microbiota. A growing body of evidence, mainly from animal studies, reveal the influence of microbiota and its disease-associated imbalances on neural stem cell proliferative and differentiative activities in brain neurogenic niches. On the other hand, the long-claimed pro-neurogenic activity of natural dietary compounds endowed with antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties (such as polyphenols, polyunsaturated fatty acids, or pro/prebiotics) may be mediated, at least in part, by their action on the intestinal microflora. The purpose of this review is to summarise the available information regarding the influence of the gut microbiota on neurogenesis, analyse the possible underlying mechanisms, and discuss the potential implications of this emerging knowledge for the fight against neurodegeneration and brain ageing.

Abstract
Objective Colitis is one of the main gastrointestinal diseases threatening human health. Materials and Methods In this study, a synbiotic composed of arabinoxylan (AX) and Lactobacillus fermentum HFY06 was tested to determine its ability to relieve dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)-induced colitis. Results The experimental results showed that the synergistic effect of AX and L. fermentum HFY06 alleviated the weight loss of DSS-mediated colitis mice and lowered the disease activity index (DAI) score. Determination of biochemical indicators found that the synbiotic composed of AX and L. fermentum HFY06 increased the body’s antioxidant capacity and reduced inflammation. The histopathological examination results showed that the colonic crypts of the mice in the model group were disordered, goblet cells were lost, and the mucous membrane was severely damaged. However, the combination of AX and L. fermentum HFY06 can significantly reverse the histopathological changes in the colon mediated by DSS. The gene expression of colon tissue was further determined, and the results showed that the synergistic effect of AX and L. fermentum HFY06 inhibited the activation of the NF-κB signaling pathway, downregulated the mRNA expression levels of nuclear factor-κB-p65 (NF-κBp65), upregulated the mRNA expression of NF-κB inhibitor-α (IκB-α), inhibited the release of cytokines tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS), and cyclooxygenase (COX-2), and exerted anti-colitis effects. Conclusion This study shows that the synbiotic composed of AX and L. fermentum HFY06 has the potential to prevent and treat colitis.

Abstract
The microbiome influences the emotional and cognitive phenotype of its host, as well as the neurodevelopment and pathophysiology of various brain processes and disorders, via the well‐established microbiome–gut–brain axis. Rapidly accumulating data link the microbiome to severe neuropsychiatric disorders in humans, including schizophrenia, Alzheimer's and Parkinson's. Moreover, preclinical work has shown that perturbation of the microbiome is closely associated with social, cognitive and behavioural deficits. The potential of the microbiome as a diagnostic and therapeutic tool is currently undercut by a lack of clear mechanistic understanding of the microbiome–gut–brain axis. This review establishes the hypothesis that the mechanism by which this influence is carried out is synaptic plasticity – long‐term changes to the physical and functional neuronal structures that enable the brain to undertake learning, memory formation, emotional regulation and more. By examining the different constituents of the microbiome–gut–brain axis through the lens of synaptic plasticity, this review explores the diverse aspects by which the microbiome shapes the behaviour and mental wellbeing of the host. Key elements of this complex bi‐directional relationship include neurotransmitters, neuronal electrophysiology, immune mediators that engage with both the central and enteric nervous systems and signalling cascades that trigger long‐term potentiation of synapses. The importance of establishing mechanistic correlations along the microbiome–gut–brain axis cannot be overstated as they hold the potential for furthering current understanding regarding the vast fields of neuroscience and neuropsychiatry. This review strives to elucidate the promising theory of microbiome‐driven synaptic plasticity in the hope of enlightening current researchers and inspiring future ones.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Probiotics are beneficial in intestinal disorders. However, the benefits of Lactobacillus johnsonii in experimental colitis remain unknown. OBJECTIVES This study aimed to investigate the benefits of L. johnsonii against Citrobacter rodentium-induced colitis. METHODS Thirty-six 5-wk-old female C57BL/6J mice were randomly assigned to 3 groups (n = 12): control (Ctrl) group, Citrobacter rodentium treatment (CR) group (2 × 109 CFU C. rodentium), and Lactobacillus johnsonii and Citrobacter rodentium cotreatment (LJ + CR) group (109 CFU L. johnsonii with C. rodentium). Colon length, mucosal thickness, proinflammatory cytokine genes, and endoplasmic reticulum stress were tested. RESULTS The CR group had greater spleen weight, mucosal thickness, and Ki67+ cells (0.4-4.7 times), and a 23.8% shorter colon length than the Ctrl group, which in the LJ + CR group were 22.4%-77.6% lower and 30% greater than in the CR group, respectively. Relative to the Ctrl group, serum proinflammatory cytokines and immune cell infiltration were greater by 0.3-1.6 times and 6.2-8.8 times in the CR group, respectively; relative to the CR group, these were 19.9%-61.9% and 69.5%-84.2% lower in the LJ + CR group, respectively. The mRNA levels of lysozyme (Lyz) and regenerating islet-derived protein III were 22.7%-36.5% lower and 1.5-2.7 times greater in the CR group than in the Ctrl group, respectively, whereas they were 22.2%-25.7% greater and 57.2%-76.9% lower in the LJ + CR group than in the CR group, respectively. Cell apoptosis was 11.9 times greater in the CR group than in the Ctrl group, and 87.4% lower in the LJ + CR group than in the CR group. Consistently, the protein abundances of C/EBP homologous protein (CHOP), cleaved caspase 1 and 3, activating transcription factor 6α (ATF6A), and phospho-inositol-requiring enzyme 1α (P-IRE1A) were 0.3-2.1 times greater in the CR group and 31.1%-60.4% lower in the LJ + CR group. All these indexes did not differ between the Ctrl and LJ + CR groups, except for CD8+ T lymphocytes and CD11b+ and F4/80+ macrophages (1-1.5 times greater in LJ + CR) and mRNA concentration of Lyz2 (20.1% lower in LJ + CR). CONCLUSIONS L. johnsonii supplementation is a promising nutritional strategy for preventing C. rodentium-induced colitis in mice.

Abstract
Schizophrenia is a heterogeneous neurodevelopmental disorder involving the convergence of a complex and dynamic bidirectional interaction of genetic expression and the accumulation of prenatal and postnatal environmental risk factors. The development of the neural circuitry underlying social, cognitive and emotional domains requires precise regulation from molecular signalling pathways, especially during critical periods or "windows", when the brain is particularly sensitive to the influence of environmental input signalling. Many of the brain regions involved, and the molecular substrates sub-serving these domains are responsive to life-long microbiota-gut-brain (MGB) axis signalling. This intricate microbial signalling system communicates with the brain via the vagus nerve, immune system, enteric nervous system, enteroendocrine signalling and production of microbial metabolites, such as short-chain fatty acids. Preclinical data has demonstrated that MGB axis signalling influences neurotransmission, neurogenesis, myelination, dendrite formation and blood brain barrier development, and modulates cognitive function and behaviour patterns, such as, social interaction, stress management and locomotor activity. Furthermore, preliminary clinical studies suggest altered gut microbiota profiles in schizophrenia. Unravelling MGB axis signalling in the context of an evolving dimensional framework in schizophrenia may provide a more complete understanding of the neurobiological architecture of this complex condition and offers the possibility of translational interventions.

Abstract
Ethanol (EtOH) is the main risk factor for alcoholic liver disease. However, fermented alcoholic beverages contain not only ethanol but also various volatile compounds. Currently, the effects of volatile compounds in ethanol-containing fermented beverages on gut microbiota and host metabolism are largely unclear. To fill this gap, we constructed an 8-week mice model using three types of Baijiu (a traditional fermented alcoholic beverage), sterile water and ethanol as controls. Results revealed that three types of Baijiu contain various volatiles, mainly belonging to esters, alcohols, and acids. All of Baijiu caused the lower levels of liver injury in mice than EtOH (at the same EtOH concentration) by phenotypic, biochemical and pathological analysis. We observed that Baijiu volatiles affect the gut microbiota structure and serum metabolomic patterns of mice. Compared with EtOH, Baijiu feeding profoundly increased the relative abundance of Lactobacillus (the highest relative abundance in the Baijiu-fed group was 11.16 ± 1.52%, and in the EtOH-fed group it was 1.80 ± 0.66%). Esters, acids and phenols in volatiles showed strong positive correlations (P < 0.01, R > 0.6) with Lactobacillus. Moreover, Baijiu feeding significantly (P < 0.05) enriched serum metabolites related to bioenergy (i.e., D-glucose, the highest fold change was 1.16) and anti-inflammatory activity (i.e., arachidonic acid, the highest fold change was 1.43) as compared to EtOH. Finally, the microbial and metabolic function analysis showed that volatiles will enhance the citrate cycle and biosynthesis of unsaturated fatty acid pathways. Overall, these data demonstrated the potential of volatile compounds for attenuating the progress of alcoholic liver disease by regulating the gut microbiota and host metabolism.

Abstract
The occurrence and development of cardiovascular-related diseases are associated with structural and functional changes in gut microbiota (GM). The accumulation of beneficial gut commensals contributes to the improvement of cardiovascular-related diseases. The cardiovascular-related diseases that can be relieved by Lactobacillus supplementation, including hypercholesterolemia, atherosclerosis, myocardial infarction, heart failure, type 2 diabetes mellitus, and obesity, have expanded. As probiotics, lactobacilli occupy a substantial part of the GM and play important functional roles through various GM-derived metabolites. Lactobacilli ultimately have a beneficial impact on lipid metabolism, inflammatory factors, and oxidative stress to relieve the symptoms of cardiovascular-related diseases. However, the axis and cellular process of gut commensal Lactobacillus in improving cardiovascular-related diseases have not been fully elucidated. Additionally, Lactobacillus strains produce diverse antimicrobial peptides, which help maintain intestinal homeostasis and ameliorate cardiovascular-related diseases. These strains are a field that needs to be further investigated immediately. Thus, this review demonstrated the mechanisms and summarized the evidence of the benefit of Lactobacillus strain supplementation from animal studies and human clinical trials. We also highlighted a broad range of lactobacilli candidates with therapeutic capability by mining their metabolites. Our study provides instruction in the development of lactobacilli as a functional food to improve cardiovascular-related diseases.

Abstract
In recent years, some investigations have focused on the relationship between gut microbiota and brain function in healthy and disease conditions. Moreover, changes in the gut microbiome may affect memory, behavior, and cognition. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of lactobacilli on passive avoidance learning, hippocampal CaMKII-α, and TNF-α genes expression in one experimental model of neuroinflammtion. Male wistar rats (220-240 g) received daily oral gavage of different lactobacilli including L. rhamnosus, L. reuteri, and L. plantarum for 21 days. At the next step, behavioral test was performed and 4 hours after acute injection of LPS (1mg/kg, ip) retrieval was evaluated. Then the hippocampi were extracted and kept at _80°C. Finally CaMKII-α and TNF-α mRNA levels were evaluated by Real-time PCR. Our results showed that consumption of L. rhamnosus, L.reuteri, or L. plantarum significantly prevented LPS-induced enhancement of TNF-α mRNA and memory deterioration. Furthermore, L. rhamnosus significantly prevented changes induced by LPS on CaMKII-α mRNA levels. It seems the lactobacilli used in this study can affect brain function and memory performance by their immune-modulatory properties.

Abstract
Previous studies have suggested that the Lactobacillus plantarum bacteria strain could be effective in ulcerative colitis (UC) management. However, its effects are strain-specific and the related mechanisms for its attenuating effects on UC remain unclear. This study aimed to elucidate the underlying mechanisms for the protective effect of L. plantarum on UC. Firstly, 15 L. plantarum strains were screened for potential probiotic characteristics with good tolerance to simulated human gastrointestinal transit and adhesion. Secondly, the inflammatory response of selected strains to the Caco-2 cells induced by lipopolysaccharide (LPS) was measured. Finally, an in vivo mouse model induced by dextran sulfate sodium (DSS) was used to assess the beneficial effects and likely action mechanisms the successfully screened in vitro strain, L. plantarum L15. In vitro results showed that L. plantarum L15 possessed the highest gastrointestinal transit tolerance, adhesion and reduction of pro-inflammatory abilities compared to the other screened strains. In vivo, high dose of L. plantarum L15 supplementation increased the body weight, colon length and anti-inflammatory cytokine production. Pro-inflammatory cytokine production, disease activity index (DAI) levels and myeloperoxidase (MPO) parameters decreased using this strain. In addition, L. plantarum L15 alleviated the histopathological changes in colon, modulated the gut microbiota, and decreased LPS secretion. The activities of this strain down-regulated the expression of TLR4 and MyD88 genes as well as genes associated with NF-κB signaling pathway. Our findings present L. plantarum L15 as a new probiotic, with promising application for UC management.

Abstract
The effects of whole egg on the cecal microbiome of ddY mice has been reported. To investigate the existence of susceptible indigenous bacteria (SIB) to egg yolks (EY), mice were fed a diet containing either 20% (w/w) milk casein and 17% beef tallow (CT) or 12% milk casein and 27% EY for 14 days, and then, the cecal microbiome was analyzed by 16S rRNA (V4) amplicon sequencing. To isolate the typical species in each diet group, culture-dependent viable bacterial counts were determined on Blood Liver (BL) and Gifu Anaerobic Medium (GAM) agar plates. The amplicon sequencing analysis revealed typical CT-SIB, such as Lachnospiraceae-like bacteria, and EY-SIB, such as Allobaculum-, Lactobacillus murinus-, and Bacteroides vulgatus-like bacteria. Two of the detected SIB species, L. murinus- and B. vulgatus-like bacteria, were successfully isolated from the BL and GAM agar plates and defined using a 16S rDNA BLAST search. PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS: The SIB defined in the CT and EY groups might have some effects on the nutritional and functional chemical compounds in the milk casein, beef tallow, and/or EY. Analysis of its functional properties of the isolates might develop the new and unique probiotic strains.

Abstract
This study was aimed to investigate the effects of Clostridium butyricum (C. butyricum) immunity and intestinal epithelial barrier function at the intestinal mucosal level, by using Salmonella enteritidis (S. enteritidis) to infect specific-pathogen-free (SPF) chickens and intestinal epithelial cells (IEC). We found that C. butyricum could decrease cytokine levels (IFN-γ, IL-1β, IL-8, and TNF-α) via the TLR4-, MyD88-, and NF-κB-dependent pathways in intestinal tissues and intestinal epithelial cells. Additionally, C. butyricum could attenuate bacteria-induced intestinal damage and increase the expression level of muc-2 and ZO-1 in the intestine and intestinal epithelial cells. Furthermore, C. butyricum altered the intestinal microbial composition, increased the diversity of the bacterial communities in the cecum of Salmonella-infected chickens. In conclusion, C. butyricum effectively attenuated inflammation and epithelial barrier damage, altered the intestinal microbial composition, increased the diversity of the bacterial communities in the intestine of Salmonella-infected chickens. The result suggests that C. butyricum might be an effective and safe therapy for the treatment of Salmonella infection.

Abstract
The first years of life constitute a crucial period for neurodevelopment and a window of opportunity to develop new strategies to prevent neurological and mental diseases. Different studies have shown the influence of gut bacteria in neurogenesis and a functional relationship between gut microbiota and the brain, known as 'gut-brain axis', in which the intestinal microbiota is proposed to play a key role in neurophysiological processes. It has been observed that certain microbiome metabolites could be related to the development of neurological disorders through mechanisms still unknown. Then, more studies are needed to broaden the knowledge regarding the relationship between the Central Nervous System and the gastrointestinal tract, which could help to develop new preventive and treatment protocols.

Abstract
The inflammatory bowel diseases (IBDs) are chronic inflammatory conditions, which are increasing in prevalence worldwide. The IBDs are thought to result from an aberrant immune response to gut microbes in genetically susceptible individuals. Dysbiosis of the gut microbiome, both functional and compositional, promotes patient susceptibility to colonization by pathobionts. Manipulating gut microbial communities and gut microbiota-immune system interactions to restore gut homeostasis or reduce inflammation are appealing therapeutic models. We discuss the therapeutic potential of precision microbiota editing, natural and engineered probiotics, the use of gut microbiota-derived metabolites in colitogenic phenotypes, and intestinal stem cells, in maintaining gut microbiota balance, restoring the mucosal barrier, and having positive immunomodulatory effects in experimental IBD. This review highlights that we are only just beginning to understand the complexity of the microbiota and how it can be manipulated for health benefits, including treatment and prevention of the clinical IBDs in future.

Abstract
Humans evolved within a microbial ecosystem resulting in an interlinked physiology. The gut microbiota can signal to the brain via the immune system, the vagus nerve or other host-microbe interactions facilitated by gut hormones, regulation of tryptophan metabolism and microbial metabolites such as short chain fatty acids (SCFA), to influence brain development, function and behavior. Emerging evidence suggests that the gut microbiota may play a role in shaping cognitive networks encompassing emotional and social domains in neurodevelopmental disorders. Drawing upon pre-clinical and clinical evidence, we review the potential role of the gut microbiota in the origins and development of social and emotional domains related to Autism spectrum disorders (ASD) and schizophrenia. Small preliminary clinical studies have demonstrated gut microbiota alterations in both ASD and schizophrenia compared to healthy controls. However, we await the further development of mechanistic insights, together with large scale longitudinal clinical trials, that encompass a systems level dimensional approach, to investigate whether promising pre-clinical and initial clinical findings lead to clinical relevance.

Abstract
Lactobacillus plantarum C29-fermented defatted soybean (FDS), which contains soyasaponins such as soyasaponin I (SI) and soyasapogenol B (SB) and isoflavones such as genistin (GE) and genistein (GT), attenuated memory impairment in mice. Moreover, in the preliminary study, FDS and its soyasaponins and isoflavones significantly inhibited NF-κB activation in LPS-stimulated microglial BV2 cells. Therefore, we examined the effects of FDS and its constituents SI, SB, GT, and GE on LPS-induced memory impairment in mice. Oral administration of FDS (80 mg/kg), which has higher concentrations of SB and GE than DS, recovered LPS-impaired cognitive function in Y-maze (55.1 ± 3.5%) and passive avoidance tasks (50.9 ± 19.2 s) to 129.2% (74.1 ± 3.5%) and 114.2% (290.0 ± 22.4 s) of normal mice, respectively (P < 0.05). SB and GE (10 μM) also more potently attenuated LPS-impaired cognitive behavior than SI and GT, respectively. SB (10 mg/kg) was the most effective: treatment recovered LPS-impaired spontaneous alternation and latency time to 105.7% and 126.8% of normal control mice, respectively (P < 0.05). SB and GE significantly increased BDNF expression and CREB phosphorylation in LPS-treated mice and corticosterone-stimulated SH-SY5Y cells. Furthermore, SB and GE (10 μM) also significantly inhibited NF-κB activation in LPS-treated mice. These findings suggested that FDS and its constituent soyasaponins and isoflavones may attenuate memory impairment by the regulation of NF-κB-mediated BDNF expression.
