The impact of forensic nursing course on students’ knowledge level on forensic evidence

Korean radiographers' awareness, experiences, and education needs in forensic medicine and forensic radiology

This study assesses the need for education in forensic medicine and forensic radiology among radiographers by investigating the perceptions and experiences of Korean radiographers working in medical institutions. A structured questionnaire was administered to participants, collected, and analyzed. The results showed that despite receiving frequent forensic cases, Korean radiographers face difficulties in taking appropriate measures about forensic radiology due to a lack of awareness and knowledge of its forensic aspects. The participants indicated that university education in forensic medicine and forensic radiology is necessary. Therefore, it is imperative to develop and implement policies for forensic education programs to enhance radiographers' forensic knowledge and capabilities. Universities should conduct courses on forensic radiology and provide continuing education for radiographers working in this field.

Evaluation of teaching forensic nursing course on undergraduate nursing student’s forensic nursing knowledge

Background

The aim of the forensic nursing (FN) education is to provide nursing students with the basic knowledge of FN that they can use in the clinical area.

Objective

The study evaluated the effect of integrating forensic nursing into the undergraduate nursing curriculum on 2nd- and 4th-year students’ knowledge level of FN.

Participants

The target population of this study was composed of 2nd- and 4th-year students in the nursing department at a foundation university in Istanbul. The study was conducted with 95 nursing students who agreed to participate in the study.

Methods

The research was planned as cross-sectional and descriptive. The questionnaire form was developed with the help of literature by experts in the field. Each correct answer was scored as 4 points, and the total score could range from 0 to 100.

Results

The average age was 21.64 ± 1.16, and 66.3% (n = 63) was female. Out of the 95 students, 50.5% (n = 48) were in 2nd year, and 49.5% (n = 47) were in 4th year. A total of 47.4% (n = 45) of the students took a FN course, and 52.6% (n = 50) did not take FN course. The average level of knowledge for those who took FN course was 52.09 ± 12.31 and for those who did not take FN course was 46.16 ± 12.18. According to the status of taking FN course, a significant difference was found between the average level of knowledge (p < 0.05).

Conclusions

These results emphasize the importance of integration of FN into the undergraduate nursing curriculum.

Effect of a forensic nursing virtual education course on knowledge and clinical decision-making of master’s nursing students in Iran: a non-equivalent control group pre- and post-test study

PURPOSE

Forensic nursing is a specialty in the nursing profession based on legal procedures. This study aimed to assess the effect of a forensic nursing virtual education course on knowledge and clinical decision-making among master’s nursing students.

METHODS

In a quasi-experimental study with a pre- and post-test, 106 master’s nursing students at Guilan (n=65) and Mazandaran (n=41) Universities of Medical Sciences, Iran were enrolled. Data were collected using census sampling from March to April 2021. Participants in the intervention group received a forensic nursing virtual education course in three 90-minute sessions for 2 days.

RESULTS

A total of 88 out of 106 master’s nursing students were enrolled in this study. The mean post-education score for knowledge in the intervention group was significantly higher than in the control group (12.52 vs. 7.67, P<0.001). The mean post-education score for clinical decision-making in the intervention group was significantly higher than in the control group (16.96 vs. 13.64, P<0.001).

CONCLUSION

The level of knowledge and clinical decision-making of master’s nursing students regarding forensic evidence improved after the forensic nursing virtual education course in the intervention group compared to the control group. Nursing managers and policymakers can develop appropriate strategies to improve the knowledge and clinical decision-making of nursing students by using forensic nursing education courses in the curricula of nursing programs, especially in postgraduate education as an elective or mandatory course.

Educational Needs of U.S. Emergency Nurses Related to Forensic Nursing Processes

BACKGROUND

Forensic nursing is a specialty deployed in patient care areas, including emergency departments, intensive care units, labor and delivery suites, and psychiatric units treating persons who have suffered trauma from a violent or criminal act. The recognition of violence-related injuries in patients presenting to health care facilities is critical to an appropriate care trajectory. These patients require specialized resources beyond the treatment of physical injuries to include psychosocial and legal care that supports patient recovery and pursuit of criminal justice.

OBJECTIVE

The purpose of this study is to obtain a broad view of current forensic knowledge and training for emergency nurses working in U.S. emergency departments and to identify gaps in nursing skills and practice such that appropriate education can be developed for this nursing specialty.

METHODS

The study was conducted using a quantitative exploratory, descriptive approach via an emailed cross-sectional survey sent to a convenience sample of U.S. emergency nurses.

RESULTS

A total of 43,775 emails were sent out to members of the Emergency Nurses Association. Of that group, 2,493 recipients opened the email, and 1,824 completed the survey, resulting in a total response rate of 4% and a 73% response rate from those who opened the email. Few respondents self-reported competence in the care of patients who experienced child abuse (13.1%), elder abuse (12.4%), interpersonal violence (17.6%), sexual assault (19.2%), human trafficking (7.4%), developmental challenges (7.2%), strangulation (12.5%), or who were suspected of committing a violent crime (11.4%).

CONCLUSIONS

There is a compelling need to expand forensic education to advance knowledge and skill acquisition in emergency nursing practice and provide staff with additional resources that support a holistic trauma-informed approach to patient care.

A challenge based learning experience in forensic medicine

Learning about forensic sciences is a crucial part of the formation of professionals working in medicine and health areas; this includes a range of coverage from legal-medical cases to forensic autopsies. However, knowledge of forensics by medical students is limited, because the teaching focus has been on the fundamentals of procedures in this field. To develop the necessary skills, specific support, and targeted learning tasks should be designed to enable the integration of interdisciplinary work in processes, infrastructure, and equipment used in a high-quality-forensic investigation. The innovative educational experience of the Crime Scene Investigation CSI Lab was a week-long activity using the pedagogical strategy of Challenge-Based Learning. It addresses the problem that students need training in an authentic setting. The intervention, in September 2017, included 33 students from different disciplines such as medicine, law, and marketing. They participated in various learning settings in multidisciplinary teams and were challenged by experts from the State Institute for Forensic Sciences to analyze specific processes. The outcomes of the CSI Lab implementations provided evidence of how the students benefited from the experience. The results showed that 80% of the teams had an excellent approach to the solution, justification of the proposal and feasibility assessment. However, only 60% achieved a solution that met the requirements. The educational process was assessed by their perceptions of the educational strategy of the CSI Lab experience. The results indicated that 88.9% of the students believed that the experience broadened their perspectives on forensic sciences. 73.1% thought that the design of the activities, visits, and plenaries added value to their academic training, and 88.9% found it to be interesting. Regarding whether or not the activities helped the participants to understand and perform a legal-medicine investigation, 92.6% believed that it did help them recognize and understand the interventional areas and processes necessary for the investigation. CONCLUSION: Students demonstrated high acceptance of the context-rich design of the practical activities and educational experiences that were grounded in active learning. The effect on curriculum design is that the interactions and interdisciplinarity of the programs must be assessed, as these experiences could motivate them to engage in solving the social challenges of the 21st century.
