Abstract
BACKGROUND The advent of three-dimensional (3D) printing technology has revolutionized the field of dentistry, enabling the precise fabrication of dental implants. By utilizing 3D printing, dentists can devise implant plans prior to surgery and accurately translate them into clinical procedures, thereby eliminating the need for multiple surgical procedures, reducing surgical discomfort, and enhancing surgical efficiency. Furthermore, the utilization of digital 3D-printed implant guides facilitates immediate restoration by precisely translating preoperative implant design plans, enabling the preparation of temporary restorations preoperatively. METHODS This comprehensive study aimed to assess the postoperative oral health status of patients receiving personalized 3D-printed implants and investigate the advantages and disadvantages between the 3D-printed implant and conventional protocol. Additionally, variance analysis was employed to delve into the correlation between periodontal status and overall oral health. Comparisons of continuous paired parameters were made by t-test. RESULTS The results of our study indicate a commendable one-year survival rate of over 94% for 3D-printed implants. This finding was corroborated by periodontal examinations and follow-up surveys using the Oral Health Impact Profile-14 (OHIP-14) questionnaire, revealing excellent postoperative oral health status among patients. Notably, OHIP-14 scores were significantly higher in patients with suboptimal periodontal health, suggesting a strong link between periodontal health and overall oral well-being. Moreover, we found that the operating time (14.41 ± 4.64 min) was less statistically significant than for the control group (31.76 ± 6.83 min). CONCLUSION In conclusion, personalized 3D-printed implant surgery has emerged as a reliable clinical option, offering a viable alternative to traditional implant methods. However, it is imperative to gather further evidence-based medical support through extended follow-up studies to validate its long-term efficacy and safety.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Screw loosening is a common complication of internal fixation of pedicle screw. Therefore, the development of a pedicle screw with low loosening rate and high biosafety is of great clinical significance. This study aimed to investigate whether the application of a porous scaffold structure can improve the stability of pedicle screws by comparing the biomechanical properties of novel porous scaffold core pedicle screws (PSCPSs) with those of hollow lateral hole pedicle screws (HLHPSs) in a porcine lumbar spine. METHODS Thirty-two pedicle screws of both types were implanted bilaterally into the L1-4 vertebrae of four Bama pigs, with our newly designed PSCPSs on the right and HLHPSs on the left. All the Bama pigs were sacrificed 16 weeks postoperatively, and the lumbar spine was freed into individual vertebrae. Biomechanical properties of both the pedicle screws were evaluated using pull-out tests, as well as cyclic bending and pull-out tests, while the mechanical properties were assessed using three-point bending tests. The data generated were statistically analyzed using paired-sample t-tests and two independent sample t-tests. RESULTS We found that the maximal pull-out forces before and after cyclic bending of the PSCPSs (1161.50 ± 337.98 N and 1075.25 ± 223.33 N) were significantly higher than those of the HLHPSs (948.38 ± 194.32 N and 807.13 ± 242.75 N) (p < 0.05, p < 0.05). In 800 cycles of the bending tests, neither PSCPS nor HLHPS showed loosening or visible detachment, but their maximal pull-out forces after cyclic bending tests decreased compared to those in cycles without cyclic bending tests (7.43% and 14.89%, respectively), with no statistical significance (p > 0.05 and p > 0.05, respectively). Additionally, both screws buckled rather than broke in the three-point bending tests, with no statistically significant differences between the maximal bending load and modulus of elasticity of the two screws (p > 0.05 and p > 0.05, respectively). CONCLUSIONS Compared with the HLHPSs, the PSCPSs have greater pull-out resistance and better fatigue tolerance with appropriate mechanical properties. Therefore, PSCPSs theoretically have significant potential for clinical applications in reducing the incidence of loosening after pedicle screw implantation.

Additive Manufacturing (AM) has recently demonstrated significant medical progress. Due to advancements in materials and methodologies, various processes have been developed to cater to the medical sector's requirements, including bioprinting and 4D, 5D, and 6D printing. However, only a few studies have captured these emerging trends and their medical applications. Therefore, this overview presents an analysis of the advancements and achievements obtained in AM for the medical industry, focusing on the principal trends identified in the annual report of AM3DP.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This scoping review aimed to identify the available evidence in the use of 3D printing technology in dental implantology. Due to the broad scope of the subject and its application in implantology, three main areas of focus were identified: (1) customized dental implants, (2) manufacturing workflow for surgical implant guides, and (3) related implant-supported prostheses factors, which include the metallic primary frameworks, secondary ceramic or polymer superstructures, and 3D implant analog models. MATERIALS AND METHODS Online databases (Medline, Cochrane, Embase, and CINAHL) were used to identify the studies published up to February 2023 in English. Two experienced reviewers performed independently the screening and selection among the 1737 studies identified. The articles evaluated the additive manufacturing (AM) technology, materials, printing, and post-processing parameters regarding dental implantology. RESULTS The 132 full-text studies that met the inclusion criteria were examined. Thirteen studies of customized dental implants, 22 studies about the workflow for surgical implant guides, and 30 studies of related implant-supported prostheses factors were included. CONCLUSIONS (1) The clinical evidence about AM titanium and zirconia implants is scarce. Early data on survival rates, osseointegration, and mechanical properties are being reported. (2) 3D printing is a proven manufacturing technology to produce surgical implant guides. Adherence to the manufacturer's instructions is crucial and the best accuracy was achieved using MultiJet printer. (3) The quality of 3D printed prosthetic structures and superstructures is improving remarkably, especially on metallic alloys. However, better marginal fit and mechanical properties can be achieved with milling technology for metals and ceramics.

Abstract
The incidence of screw loosening, migration, and pullout caused by the insufficient screw-bone fixation stability is relatively high in clinical practice. To solve this issue, the auxetic unit-based porous bone screw (AS) has been put forward in our previous work. Its favorable auxetic effect can improve the primary screw-bone fixation stability after implantation. However, porous structure affected the fatigue behavior and in vivo longevity of bone screw. In this study, in vitro fatigue behaviors and in vivo osseointegration performance of the re-entrant unit-based titanium auxetic bone screw were studied. The tensile-tensile fatigue behaviors of AS and nonauxetic bone screw (NS) with the same porosity (51%) were compared via fatigue experiments, fracture analysis, and numerical simulation. The in vivo osseointegration of AS and NS were compared via animal experiment and biomechanical analysis. Additionally, the effects of in vivo dynamic tensile loading on the osseointegration of AS and NS were investigated and analyzed. The fatigue strength of AS was approximately 43% lower while its osseointegration performance was better than NS. Under in vivo dynamic tensile loading, the osseointegration of AS and NS both improved significantly, with the maximum increase of approximately 15%. Preferrable osseointegration of AS might compensate for the shortage of fatigue resistance, ensuring its long-term stability in vivo. Adequate auxetic effect and long-term stability of the AS was supposed to provide enough screw-bone fixation stability to overcome the shortages of the solid bone screw, developing the success of surgery and showing significant clinical application prospects in orthopedic surgery. STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE: This research investigated the high-cycle fatigue behavior of re-entrant unit-based auxetic bone screw under tensile-tensile cyclic loading and its osseointegration performance, which has not been focused on in existing studies. The fatigue strength of auxetic bone screw was lower while the osseointegration was better than non-auxetic bone screw, especially under in vivo tensile loading. Favorable osseointegration of auxetic bone screw might compensate for the shortage of fatigue resistance, ensuring its long-term stability and longevity in vivo. This suggested that with adequate auxetic effect and long-term stability, the auxetic bone screw had significant application prospects in orthopedic surgery. Findings of this study will provide a theoretical guidance for design optimization and clinical application of the auxetic bone screw.

Abstract
The scientific community is and has constantly been working to innovate and improve the available technologies in our use. In that effort, three-dimensional (3D) printing was developed that can construct 3D objects from a digital file. Three-dimensional printing, also known as additive manufacturing (AM), has seen tremendous growth over the last three decades, and in the last five years, its application has widened significantly. Three-dimensional printing technology has the potential to fill the gaps left by the limitations of the current manufacturing technologies, and it has further become exciting with the addition of a time dimension giving rise to the concept of four-dimensional (4D) printing, which essentially means that the structures created by 4D printing undergo a transformation over time under the influence of internal or external stimuli. The created objects are able to adapt to changing environmental variables such as moisture, temperature, light, pH value, etc. Since their introduction, 3D and 4D printing technologies have extensively been used in the healthcare, aerospace, construction, and fashion industries. Although 3D printing has a highly promising future, there are still a number of challenges that must be solved before the technology can advance. In this paper, we reviewed the recent advances in 3D and 4D printing technologies, the available and potential materials for use, and their current and potential future applications. The current and potential role of 3D printing in the imperative fight against COVID-19 is also discussed. Moreover, the major challenges and developments in overcoming those challenges are addressed. This document provides a cutting-edge review of the materials, applications, and challenges in 3D and 4D printing technologies.

Abstract
Ti-5Cu alloy has been proved to have excellent mechanical properties and cell compatibility and has certain antibacterial properties due to the addition of Cu. However, there are few studies on the effects of Ti-5Cu alloy on macrophage polarization and immune-related bone formation. In this study, we prepared Ti-5Cu alloy by three-dimensional printing technology and found that Ti-5Cu alloy presented a much smoother surface compared with Ti. In addition, the CCK-8 results indicated the Ti-5Cu alloy had no cytotoxicity to RAW264.7 cells by co-culture. The results of inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry showed that the concentration of Cu2+ was 0.133 mg/L after 7 days of co-culture, and the CCK-8 results proved that Cu2+ had no cytotoxicity to RAW264.7 at this concentration. Then, we studied the effects of Ti-5Cu alloy on macrophage polarization; it was shown that the Ti-5Cu alloy is more prone to modulate the RAW264.7 polarization towards the M2 phenotype and the conditioned medium derived from Ti-5Cu alloy significantly promoted the proliferation and osteogenic differentiation of MC3T3-E1 cells. However, when the expression of Oncostatin M (OSM) gene of RAW264.7 was knocked down, the osteogenic differentiation of MC3T3-E1 cells was decreased. This suggests that the OSM secreted by RAW264.7 co-cultured with Ti-5Cu alloy could accelerate the osteogenic differentiation of MC3T3-E1 cells by acting on OSMR/gp130 receptors.

Abstract
Graded porous titanium scaffolds are gaining increasing attention as dental implants due to their ability to mimic the mechanical and biological properties of human bone. In this study, we have developed titanium scaffolds with graded primitive structures with porosities of 50.7 %, 61.0 %, 70.5 %, and 80.3 % (denoted as P50, P60, P70, and P80, respectively) for dental applications. The simulation results in the oral environment showed that the maximum von Mises strains and stress of cortical bone tissue around P50, P60, and P70 were lower than 3000 με and 60 MPa, respectively, which was beneficial for bone regeneration. The elastic modulus and yield strength of P50, P60, and P70 ranged within 5.2-13.8 GPa and 88.6-217.8 MPa, respectively. Among these, P60 exhibited the most favorable mechanical properties with a compression yield strength of 163.2 MPa and an elastic modulus of 9.7 GPa, which are desirable mechanical properties for dental material applications. The tested permeabilities of the fabricated specimens were in the range 0.66-6.88 × 10-9 m2, which is within the range of human bone (0.01-12.10 × 10-9 m2). In vitro biocompatibility assay results showed that P60 and P70 had better potential for cell viability and osteogenesis than P50. It can be concluded that P60, which has a compatible elastic modulus, high yield strength, high permeability, good cytocompatibility, and osteogenesis properties, is a promising candidate for bone-tissue engineering applications in dentistry.

Abstract
Stem cells exist as normal cells in embryonic and adult tissues. In recent years, scientists have spared efforts to determine the role of stem cells in treating many diseases. Stem cells can self-regenerate and transform into some somatic cells. They would also have a special position in the future in various clinical fields, drug discovery, and other scientific research. Accordingly, the detection of safe and low-cost methods to obtain such cells is one of the main objectives of research. Jaw, face, and mouth tissues are the rich sources of stem cells, which more accessible than other stem cells, so stem cell and tissue engineering treatments in dentistry have received much clinical attention in recent years. This review study examines three essential elements of tissue engineering in dentistry and clinical practice, including stem cells derived from the intra- and extra-oral sources, growth factors, and scaffolds.

Abstract
In recent ten years, with the fast development of digital and engineering manufacturing technology, additive manufacturing has already been more and more widely used in the field of dentistry, from the first personalized surgical guides to the latest personalized restoration crowns and root implants. In particular, the bioprinting of teeth and tissue is of great potential to realize organ regeneration and finally improve the life quality. In this review paper, we firstly presented the workflow of additive manufacturing technology. Then, we summarized the main applications and recent research progresses of additive manufacturing in dentistry. Lastly, we sketched out some challenges and future directions of additive manufacturing technology in dentistry.

Abstract
BACKGROUND 3D printing is a rapidly developing technology in the healthcare industry and in dentistry. Its application clearly shows that this area of digital dentistry has potential for everyday usage across all fields, including prosthodontics, orthodontics, maxillofacial surgery, and oral implantology. However, despite gaining ground, there is a lack of information about how specialists (dentists and dental technicians) use additive technology. Our research group aimed to investigate the impact of social media on additive manufacturing technology among dental specialists and their everyday usage of 3D printing. METHODS This paper investigated specialists' everyday usage of 3D printers via an online survey (Google Forms). The survey questions aimed to discover the number of 3D printers used, the accessibility of the devices, the annual cost, and the design programs. Since specialists tend to build online communities on social media, we circulated our study questionnaire using our profiles on LinkedIn, Facebook, and Instagram platforms during our research. RESULTS A total of 120 responses were received from 20 countries, with the most significant numbers being from Hungary 23.7% (n = 27), the United States 18.4% (n = 21), and the United Kingdom 7.9% (n = 9). Most of the participants were dentists (n = 68) or dental technicians (n = 29), but some CAD/CAM specialists (n = 23) also completed our survey. The participants had an average of 3.8 years (±0.7) of experience in the 3D printing field, and owned a total of 405 printing devices (3.6 on average/person). CONCLUSIONS The impact of social media on this research field is growing increasingly. Hence, we support specialists in joining virtual communities on professional platforms. This article intended to provide a practical overview, feedback, and direction for dentists interested in 3D printing technology. From our survey, we can conclude that additive technology is broadening dental applications and the services that we can provide for our patients.

Abstract
This work is devoted to the research of porous titanium alloy structures suitable for use in biomedical applications. Mechanical properties were examined on six series of samples with different structures and porosity via static compressive test to identify the type of structure suitable for elimination of the “stress shielding” effect. In addition, high porosity is desirable due to the overgrowth of bone tissue into the internal structure of the implant. The samples were made of titanium alloy Ti6Al4V by using selective laser melting (SLM) additive manufacturing. The series of samples differ from each other in pore size (200, 400, and 600 µm) and porous structure topology (cubic or trabecular). The actual weight of all samples, which plays an important role in identifying other characteristics, was determined. Compressive tests were focused on the detection of maximum stress. The highest porosity and thus the lowest weight were achieved in the samples with a trabecular structure and 600 µm pore size. All tested samples reached optimal values of maximum stress and tensile strength. The most appropriate mechanical properties were observed for samples with a 200 µm pore diameter and cubic structure.

Abstract
The rise of three-dimensional (3D) printing technology has changed the face of dentistry over the past decade. 3D printing is a versatile technique that allows the fabrication of fully automated, tailor-made treatment plans, thereby delivering personalized dental devices and aids to the patients. It is highly efficient, reproducible, and provides fast and accurate results in an affordable manner. With persistent efforts among dentists for refining their practice, dental clinics are now acclimatizing from conventional treatment methods to a fully digital workflow to treat their patients. Apart from its clinical success, 3D printing techniques are now employed in developing haptic simulators, precise models for dental education, including patient awareness. In this narrative review, we discuss the evolution and current trends in 3D printing applications among various areas of dentistry. We aim to focus on the process of the digital workflow used in the clinical diagnosis of different dental conditions and how they are transferred from laboratories to clinics. A brief outlook on the most recent manufacturing methods of 3D printed objects and their current and future implications are also discussed.

Abstract
Microfluidic technology has been extensively applied to model the functional units of human organs and tissues. Since vasculature is a key component of any functional tissue, a variety of techniques to mimic vasculature in vitro have been developed to address complex physiological and pathological processes in 3D tissues. Herein, we developed a novel, in vitro, microfluidic-based model to probe microvasculature growth into and across implanted porous membranes. Using ePTFE and polycarbonate as examples, we characterize the vascularization potential of these thin porous membranes using this device. This tool will allow for the assessment of porous materials early in their development, prior to their use for encapsulating implants or drugs, while minimizing the need for animal studies. Employing quantitative morphometric analysis and measurements of vascular permeability, we demonstrate our model to be an effective platform for evaluation of angiogenic potential of an implanted membrane biomaterial. Results show that endothelial cells can either migrate as single cells or form continuous sprouts across porous membranes, which is a material structure-dependent behavior. Our model is advantageous over conventional Transwell assays as it is amenable to quantitative assessment of vascular sprouting in 3D, and in contrast to animal models it can be employed more efficiently and with real-time assessment capabilities. This new tool could be applied either to test the suitability of a wide range of biomaterials for implantation or to screen different pro-angiogenic factors for therapeutic applications, and will advance the design of new biomaterials.
