Inhibition of hydrogen sulfide generation from disposed gypsum drywall using chemical inhibitors

Central sleep apnea and exposure to ambient hydrogen sulfide emissions from massive strandings of decomposing sargassum in the Caribbean

BACKGROUND

Sargassum invasion of Caribbean and American shorelines is a recurring environmental hazard. Potential health effects of long-term chronic exposure to sargassum gaseous emissions, notably hydrogen sulfide (H2S), are overlooked. H2S plays an important role in neurotransmission and is involved in generating and transmitting respiratory rhythm. Central sleep apnea (CSA) has been attributed to the depression of respiratory centers.

OBJECTIVE

Evaluate the effects of exposure to sargassum-H2S on CSA.

METHODS

This study, set in the Caribbean, describes the clinical and polysomnographic characteristics of individuals living and/or working in areas impacted by sargassum strandings, in comparison with non-exposed subjects. Environmental exposure was estimated by the closest ground H2S sensor. Multivariate linear regression was applied to analyze CSA changes according to cumulative H2S exposure over time. Effects of air pollution and other sargassum toxic compounds (NH3) on CSA were also controlled.

RESULTS

Among the 685 study patients, 27 % were living and/or working in sargassum impacted areas. Compared with non-exposed patients, exposed ones had similar sleep apnea syndrome risk factors, but had increased levels of CSA events (expressed as absolute number or % of total sleep apnea). Multivariate regression retained only male gender and mean H2S concentration over a 6-month exposure period as independent predictors of an increase in CSA events. A minimal exposure length of 1 month generated a significant rise in CSA events, with the latter increasing proportionally with a cumulative increase in H2S concentration over time.

CONCLUSION

This pioneer work highlights a potential effect of sargassum-H2S on the central nervous system, notably on the modulation of the activity of the brain's respiratory control center. These observations, jointly with previous studies from our group, constitute a body of evidence strongly supporting a deleterious effect of sargassum-H2S on the health of individuals chronically exposed to low to moderate concentration levels over time.

Flexible Cu3(HHTP)2 MOF Membranes for Gas Sensing Application at Room Temperature

Mixed matrix membranes (MMMs), possessing high porosity, have received extensive attention for gas sensing applications. However, those with high flexibility and significant sensitivity are rare. In this work, we report on the fabrication of a novel membrane, using Cu₃(HHTP)₂ MOF (Cu-MOF) embedded in a polymer matrix. A solution comprising a homogenous suspension of poly-vinyl alcohol (PVA) and ionic liquid (IL), and Cu-MOF solid particles, was cast onto a petri dish to obtain a flexible membrane (215 μm in thickness). The sensor membrane (Cu-MOF/PVA/IL), characterized for its structure and morphology, was assessed for its performance in sensing against various test gases. A detection limit of 1 ppm at 23 °C (room temperature) for H₂S was achieved, with a response time of 12 s. Moreover, (Cu-MOF/PVA/IL) sensor exhibited excellent repeatability, long-term stability, and selectivity towards H₂S gas. The other characteristics of the (Cu-MOF/PVA/IL) sensor include high flexibility, low cost, low-power consumption, and easy fabrication technique, which nominate this sensor as a potential candidate for use in practical industrial applications.

Extraction of Value-Added Minerals from Various Agricultural, Industrial and Domestic Wastes

Environmental pollution is one of the major concerns throughout the world. The rise of industrialization has increased the generation of waste materials, causing environmental degradation and threat to the health of living beings. To overcome this problem and effectively handle waste materials, proper management skills are required. Waste as a whole is not only waste, but it also holds various valuable materials that can be used again. Such useful materials or elements need to be segregated and recovered using sustainable recovery methods. Agricultural waste, industrial waste, and household waste have the potential to generate different value-added products. More specifically, the industrial waste like fly ash, gypsum waste, and red mud can be used for the recovery of alumina, silica, and zeolites. While agricultural waste like rice husks, sugarcane bagasse, and coconut shells can be used for recovery of silica, calcium, and carbon materials. In addition, domestic waste like incense stick ash and eggshell waste that is rich in calcium can be used for the recovery of calcium-related products. In agricultural, industrial, and domestic sectors, several raw materials are used; therefore, it is of high economic interest to recover valuable minerals and to process them and convert them into merchandisable products. This will not only decrease environmental pollution, it will also provide an environmentally friendly and cost-effective approach for materials synthesis. These value-added materials can be used for medicine, cosmetics, electronics, catalysis, and environmental cleanup.

A Highly Sensitive and Flexible Metal-Organic Framework Polymer-Based H2S Gas Sensor

We report the fabrication of a novel metal-organic framework (MOF)-polymer mixed-matrix flexible membrane for the detection of hydrogen sulfide (H₂S) gas at room temperature. This high-performance gas sensor is based on MOF-5 microparticles embedded on a conductivity-controlled chitosan (CS) organic membrane. The conductivity of the organic membrane is controlled by blending it with a glycerol ionic liquid (IL) at different concentrations. The sensor showed a remarkable detection sensitivity for H₂S gas at a concentrations level as low as 1 ppm at room temperature. The MOF-5/CS/IL gas sensor demonstrates a highly desirable detection selectivity, fast response time (<8 s), recovery time of less than 30 s, and outstanding sensing stability averaging at 97% detection with 50 ppm of H₂S gas. This composite having high sensitivity, low-power consumption, and flexibility holds great promise for addressing current challenges pertinent to environmental sustainability.

Implications of municipal solid waste co-disposal experiments on biodegradation and biochemical compatibility

The objective of this study was to evaluate waste biodegradation and biochemical compatibility for different waste co-disposed with municipal solid waste (MSW). Laboratory-scale reactors were operated with MSW co-disposed with special solid waste, liquid waste, or sludge waste. Early and aggressive addition of liquid wastes during reactor startup did not stimulate anaerobic decomposition of fresh MSW. The majority of the liquid waste reactors were acid stuck and had leachate pH < 6 and chemical oxygen demand in the range of 50,000 mg-O₂/L. The majority of liquid wastes in this study were not observed to be effective anaerobic inoculums and would not be recommended as the sole moisture source for bioreactor landfills. Enhanced early methane production was observed in the MSW reactors co-disposed with sludge (anaerobic and industrial) relative to the landfill leachate control reactors and all other waste combinations evaluated. Methane generation was observed in reactors operated with foundry waste or gypsum board co-disposed with MSW. Despite biochemical methane potential (BMP) results that indicated methane generation would be inhibited with these two waste streams, co-disposing with MSW did not completely inhibit anaerobic degradation. The BMP assays provided methane yield under ideal conditions, but did not capture other benefits of co-disposal (e.g., impacts of moisture addition). A potential co-disposal waste source should not be ruled out by BMP results alone.

The Processing of Calcium Rich Agricultural and Industrial Waste for Recovery of Calcium Carbonate and Calcium Oxide and Their Application for Environmental Cleanup: A Review

Every year a million tonnes of calcium rich agro and industrial waste are generated around the whole globe. These calcium rich waste like finger citron, shells of cockle, mussel, oysters etc., and egg shell are biological sources which have various organic compounds. The inorganic calcium rich waste includes gypsum, dolomite, sludge etc., which are produced in surplus amount globally. Most of these by-products are mainly dumped, while few are used for land-filling purposes which leads to the pollution. These agro and industrial by-products could be processed for the recovery of calcium carbonate and calcium oxide particles by physical and chemical method. The recovery of calcium carbonate and calcium oxide particles from such by products make them biocompatible. Moreover, the products are economical due to their synthesis from waste materials. Here, in this current review work we have emphasized on the all the calcium rich agro industries and industrial by products, especially their processing by various approaches. Further, we have also focused on the properties and application of such calcium carbonate and oxide particles for the remediation of organic and inorganic pollutants from the environments. The recovery of such particles from these byproducts is considered not only economical and eco-friendly but it also minimizes the pollution present in the form of solid waste.

Chemical and olfactive impacts of organic matters on odor emission patterns from the simulated construction and demolition waste landfills

The explosive increase of construction and demolition waste (CDW) caused the insufficient source separation and emergency disposal at domestic waste landfills in many developing countries. Some organic fractions were introduced to the CDW landfill process and resulted in serious odor pollution. To comprehensively explore the impacts of organic matters on odor emission patterns, five CDW landfills (OIL), with organic matters/ inert CDW components (O/I) from 5% to 30%, and the control group only with inert components (IL) or organics (OL) were simulated at the laboratory. The chemical and olfactive characters of odors were evaluated using the emission rate of 94 odorants content (ER_total), theory odor concentration (TOC_total), and e-nose concentration (ER_ENC), and their correlations with waste properties were also analyzed. It was found that the main contributors to ER_total (IL: 93.0% NH₃; OIL: 41.6% sulfides, 31.0% NH₃, 25.9% oxygenated compounds) and TOC_total (IL: 64.1% CH₃SH, 28.2% NH₃; OIL: 71.7% CH₃SH, 24.8% H₂S) changed significantly. With the rise of O/I, ER_total, TOC_total, and ER_ENC increased by 10.9, 20.6, and 2.1 times, respectively. And the organics content in CDW should be less than 10% (i.e., DOC<101.3 mg/L). The good regressions between waste properties (DOC, DN, pH) and ER_ENC- (r=0.86, 0.86, -0.88, p<0.05), TOC_total- (r=0.82, 0.79, -0.82, p<0.05) implied that the carbon sources and acidic substances relating to organics degradation might result in that increase. Besides, the correlation analysis results (ER_ENC-vs.TOC_total-, r=0.96, p<0.01; vs.ER_total-, r=0.86, p<0.05) indicated that e-nose perhaps was a reliable odor continuous monitoring tool for CDW landfills.

A high-efficiency corrosion inhibitor of N-doped citric acid-based carbon dots for mild steel in hydrochloric acid environment

Novel N-doped carbon dots (CDs) were obtained through pyrolysis of ammonium citrate at 180 °C for 1, 2 and 3 h, and their corrosion inhibition effect on Q235 steel in 1 M HCl solution were evaluated through electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), potentiodynamic polarization (Tafel), scanning vibrating electrode technique (SVET) analysis. The changes of corrosion current density and impedance modulus of Q235 steel in inhibitor solutions showed that the as-prepared carbon dots presented a valid protective effect on steel in 1 M HCl solution. Meanwhile, the inhibition efficiency of three carbon dots exceeded 90% at 200 mg/L and the highest inhibitive efficiency was found for the carbon dots prepared at the reaction time of 2 h. The adsorption mechanism of all as-prepared carbon dots complied with the Langmuir adsorption model, containing chemical and physical adsorptions, which was also confirmed by X-ray photoelectronic spectroscopy (XPS) analysis.

Hydrogen sulfide removal by bacteria from upflow anaerobic sludge blanket

This study investigated the biological removal of hydrogen sulfide (H2S) from biogas by anaerobic wastewater treatment processes. Heterotrophic and autotrophic bacteria were isolated from upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB)-mixed liquor of fruit processing factory using nutrient broth and thiosulfate mineral salt medium, respectively. Hydrogen sulfide-removal activities were investigated using sterile UASB-mixed liquor and hydrogen sulfide as growth substrates. It was found that the growth rate of autotrophic bacteria (319 mg VSS l−1 day−1) was higher than that of the heterotrophic bacteria (267 mg VSS l−1 day−1). Hydrogen sulfide(g) was totally removed by absorption into liquid phase: 78·24% removal of aqueous sulfide (S2−(aq)) was achieved by autotrophs and 68·03% by heterotrophs. Molecular identification by polymerase chain reaction-denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis technique and DNA sequencing showed that heterotrophic consortium consisted of Pseudomonas fluorescens Pf0-1, P. aeruginosa PAO1, P. putida KT2440, Bacillus megaterium DSM319 and B. cereus ATCC14579. Autotrophic consortium consisted of Thiobacillus thioparus NZ, T. denitrificans ATCC25259 and Halothiobacillus neapolitanus c2.

Methodology for assessing thioarsenic formation potential in sulfidic landfill environments

Arsenic leaching and speciation in landfills, especially those with arsenic bearing waste and drywall disposal (such as construction and demolition (C&D) debris landfills), may be affected by high levels of sulfide through the formation of thioarsenic anions. A methodology using ion chromatography (IC) with a conductivity detector was developed for the assessment of thioarsenic formation potential in sulfidic landfill environments. Monothioarsenate (H2AsSO3(-)) and dithioarsenate (H2AsS2O2(-)) were confirmed in the IC fractions of thioarsenate synthesis mixture, consistent with previous literature results. However, the observation of AsSx(-) (x=5-8) in the supposed trithioarsenate (H2AsS3O(-)) and tetrathioarsenate (H2AsS4(-)) IC fractions suggested the presence of new arsenic polysulfide complexes. All thioarsenate anions, particularly trithioarsenate and tetrathioarsenate, were unstable upon air exposure. The method developed for thioarsenate analysis was validated and successfully used to analyze several landfill leachate samples. Thioarsenate anions were detected in the leachate of all of the C&D debris landfills tested, which accounted for approximately 8.5% of the total aqueous As in the leachate. Compared to arsenite or arsenate, thioarsenates have been reported in literature to have lower adsorption on iron oxide minerals. The presence of thioarsenates in C&D debris landfill leachate poses new concerns when evaluating the impact of arsenic mobilization in such environments.

Factors affecting temporal H2S emission at construction and demolition (C&D) debris landfills

Odor problems associated with H2S emissions often result in odor complaints from nearby residents of C&D debris landfills, especially in the early morning. As part of a field study conducted on H2S removal ability using different cover materials, daily and seasonal H2S emissions through a soil cover layer were monitored at a C&D debris landfill to investigate factors affecting H2S emissions. H2S emission rates were not a constant, but varied seasonally, with an average emission rate of 4.67×10(-6)mgm(-2)s(-1). During a the 10-month field study, as the H2S concentration increased from 140ppm to about 3500ppm underneath the cover soil in the testing cell, H2S emissions ranged from zero to a maximum emission rate of 1.24×10(-5)mgm(-2)s(-1). Continuous emission monitoring indicated that H2S emissions even changed over time throughout the day, generally increasing from morning to afternoon, and were affected by soil moisture and temperature. Laboratory experiments were also conducted to investigate the effects of H2S concentration and cover soil moisture content on H2S emissions. The results showed that increased soil moisture reduced H2S emissions by retarding H2S migration through cover soil and dissolving H2S into soil water. The field study also indicated that due to atmospheric dispersion, high H2S emissions may not cause odor problems.

Modeling of H2S migration through landfill cover materials

The emission of H2S from landfills in the United States is an emergent problem because measured concentrations within the waste mass and in ambient air have been observed at potentially unsafe levels for on-site workers and at levels that can cause a nuisance and potentially deleterious health impacts to surrounding communities. Though recent research has provided data on H2S concentrations that may be observed at landfills, facility operators and landfill engineers have limited predictive tools to anticipate and plan for potentially harmful H2S emissions. A one-dimensional gas migration model was developed to assist engineers and practitioners better evaluate and predict potential emission levels of H2S based on four factors: concentration of H2S below the landfill surface (C0), advection velocity (v), H2S effective diffusion coefficient (D), and H2S adsorption coefficient of landfill cover soil (μ). Model simulations indicated that H2S migration into the atmosphere can be mitigated by reducing H2S diffusion and advection or using alternative cover soils with a high H2S adsorption coefficient. Laboratory column experiments were conducted to investigate the effects of the four parameters on H2S migration in cover soils and to calculate the adsorption coefficient of different cover materials. The model was validated by comparing results with laboratory column experiments. Based on the results, the laboratory column provides an effective way to estimate the H2S adsorption coefficient, which can then be incorporated into the developed model to predict the depth of cover soil required to reduce emitted H2S concentrations below a desired level.
