Enhanced Catalytic Denitrification Performance of Ruthenium-based Catalysts by Hydrogen Spillover from a Palladium Promoter

Catalytic denitrification, a promising technology for nitrate removal, is increasingly limited by the rising price of Pd. Replacing Pd with less-expensive Ru would significantly reduce the cost; however, Ru-based catalysts have been reported to perform inconsistently in denitrification applications, making their replacement prospects unclear. Herein, the surface oxidation of Ru catalysts was confirmed to be a key factor that inhibits activity. A series of Ru-Pd catalysts containing small amounts of Pd (0.5 wt%) was developed to eliminate the Ru surface-oxide layer through the spillover of hydrogen atoms activated on the Pd promoter. Ru-Pd/Fe₃O₄ exhibited superior catalytic activity to Ru-Pd/C and Ru-Pd/Al₂O₃ because the reducible carrier (Fe₃O₄) has a lower resistance to hydrogen spillover and diffusion, as determined experimentally and supported by density functional theory calculations. This study developed a method that eliminates ruthenium surface oxides in situ and restores its denitrification activity, further reducing the barrier to Ru replacing Pd in catalytic aqueous denitrification.

Applicability of Nickel-Based Catalytic Systems for Hydrodehalogenation of Recalcitrant Halogenated Aromatic Compounds

This review summarizes recent applications of nickel as a nonprecious metal catalyst in hydrodehalogenation (HDH) reactions of halogenated aromatic compounds (Ar–Xs). Nickel-based HDH catalysts were developed for reductive treatment of both waste containing concentrated Ar–Xs (mainly polychlorinated benzenes) and for wastewater contaminated with Ar–Xs. Ni-catalyzed HDH enables the production of corresponding nonhalogenated aromatic products (Ar–Hs), which are principally further applicable/recyclable and/or Ar–Hs, which are much more biodegradable and can be mineralized during aerobic wastewater treatment. Developed HDH methods enable the utilization of both gaseous hydrogen via the direct HDH process or other chemical reductants as a source of hydrogen utilized in the transfer of the hydrodehalogenation process. This review highlights recent and major developments in Ni-catalyzed hydrodehalogenation topic since 1990.

Comparative study on catalytic hydrodehalogenation of halogenated aromatic compounds over Pd/C and Raney Ni catalysts

Catalytic hydrodehalogenation (HDH) has proved to be an efficient approach to dispose halogenated aromatic compounds (HACs). Liquid-phase HDH of single and mixed halobenzenes/4-halophenols with H₂ over 5% Pd/C and Raney Ni catalyst are investigated and compared. For liquid-phase HDH of single HACs, hydrogenolytic scission reactivity of C-X bonds decreases in order of C-Br > C-Cl > C-I > C-F over Pd/C catalyst, and in order of C-I > C-Br > C-Cl > C-F over Raney Ni catalyst. To clarify the reason why hydrogenolytic scission reactivity of C-X bonds over Pd/C and Raney Ni catalysts exhibits different trends, liquid-phase HDH of mixed HACs over Pd/C and Raney Ni catalysts were studied, and catalysts are characterized by SEM, EDX, and XRD techniques. It was found that the high adsorption of iodoarenes on Pd/C catalyst caused the HDH reactivity of iodoarenes to be lower than that of chloroarenes and bromoarenes in the HDH of single HACs. Moreover, the adsorption of in situ produced iodine ion (I⁻) to catalyst surface would result in the decline of catalytic activity, which might be the main reason why the HDH reactivity of HACs in the presence of NaI is rather low.

Hydrodechlorination of polychlorinated molecules using transition metal phosphide catalysts

Ni2P and CoP catalysts (5 wt.% of metal) supported on a commercial SiO2 were tested in the gas phase catalytic hydrodechlorination (HDCl) of mono (chlorobenzene-ClB) and polychlorobenzenes (PCBs) (1,2- dichlorobenzene (1,2-DClB), 1,3-dichlorobenzene (1,3-DClB), 1,4-dichlorobenzene (1,4-DClB), and 1,2,4-trichlorobenzene (1,2,4-TClB)) at atmospheric pressure. It was investigated how the number and position of chlorine atoms in the molecule influence the HDCl activity. The prepared catalysts were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), CO chemisorption, N2 adsorption-desorption at -196°C, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Characterization results indicated better active phase dispersion and greater amount of P on the Ni2P catalyst surface. Catalytic results showed that the Ni2P was more active and stable in this type of reactions. The hydrodechlorination activity decreased by increasing the number of chlorine atoms in the molecule and chlorine substituents in close proximity. The observed trend in the HDCl activity was: ClB>1,4-DClB>1,3-DClB>1,2-DClB>1,2,4-TClB. The exception was the catalytic response after 24h on stream observed for the Ni2P in the HDCl reaction of 1,2,4-TClB, which was equal to that observed for the 1,4-DClB molecule, and also yielding benzene as the main reaction product.

Gas phase catalytic hydrodechlorination of chlorobenzene over cobalt phosphide catalysts with different P contents

The gas phase catalytic hydrodechlorination (HDC) of chlorobenzene (CB) at atmospheric pressure was investigated over silica-supported cobalt and cobalt phosphide catalysts containing different P loading and a fixed amount of cobalt (5 wt.%). The effect of the initial P/Co molar ratio on the stoichiometry of the cobalt phosphide phase, the acidity and the hydrogen activation capability were discussed and these properties correlated with the catalytic activity. Catalytic results indicated that the cobalt phosphide phase is much more active than the monometallic cobalt one. The activity raised with the P content present in the sample due to the formation of the CoP phase instead of the Co₂P one, which favored the formation of hydrogen spillover species, increased the amount of weak acid sites and the number of exposed superficial cobalt atoms probably related to a better dispersion of the active phase. All the catalysts gave rise benzene as the main reaction product.
