Preparation of ceramic-corrosion-cell fillers and application for cyclohexanone industry wastewater treatment in electrobath reactor

Electrocatalytic coupled biofilter for treating cyclohexanone-containing wastewater: Degradation, mechanism and optimization

Electrocatalytic coupled biofilter (EBF) technology organically integrates the characteristics of electrochemistry and microbial redox, providing ideas for effectively improving biological treatment performance. In this study, an EBF system was developed for enhanced degradation of cyclohexanone in contaminated water. Experimental results show that the system can effectively remove cyclohexanone in contaminated water. Under the optimal parameters, the removal rates of cyclohexanone, TP, NH4+-N and TN were 97.61 ± 1.31%, 76.31 ± 1.67%, 94.14 ± 2.13% and 95.87 ± 1.01% respectively. Degradation kinetics studies found that electrolysis, adsorption, and biodegradation pathways play a major role in the degradation of cyclohexanone. Microbial community analysis indicates that voltage can affect the structure of the microbial community, with the dominant genera shifting from Acidovorax (0 V) to Brevundimonas (0.7 V). Additionally, Acidovorax, Cupriavidus, Ralstonia, and Hydrogenophaga have high abundance in the biofilm and can effectively metabolize cyclohexanone and its intermediates, facilitating the removal of cyclohexanone. In summary, this research can guide the development and construction of highly stable EBF systems and is expected to be used for advanced treatment of industrial wastewater containing cyclohexanone.

Removal of antibiotic resistance genes during livestock wastewater treatment processes: Review and prospects

Antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) are emerging pollutants that have received extensive attention. Many different types of ARGs exist in livestock wastewater. If not effectively treated, they can threaten animal production, public health and the ecological safety of the surrounding environment. To address the high risk of livestock wastewater contamination by ARGs, the effects of different wastewater treatment processes on ARGs and their influencing factors and mechanisms are reviewed herein. Additionally, the current problems associated with removal of ARGs are discussed, and future research is proposed.

Prepartion and application of novel blast furnace dust based catalytic-ceramic-filler in electrolysis assisted catalytic micro-electrolysis system for ciprofloxacin wastewater treatment

Blast furnace dust (BFD), a hazardous metallurgical waste, is generated during the iron-making process and consists plenty of Fe and C. This study is among the first to apply BFD in catalytic-ceramic-filler (CCF) preparation and degradation of ciprofloxacin (CIP). The novel BFD based Fe-Ni CCF obviously enhanced the removal of CIP (from around 42%-72% after 3 h) in comparation with troditional Fe-C ceramic-filler(CF). The Fe-Ni CCF was further applied in a coupled system of electrolysis assisted catalytic micro-electrolysis (E-CME) process for CIP wastewater treatment. Under optimal operating conditions (iron rod as anode, voltage of 10v and HRT of 3 h), nearly 97% of CIP, 90% of total organic carbon (TOC) and 99% of total phosphorus (TP) were removed by E-CME process in near-neutral solution. The degradation mechanism analysis by LC-MS revealed that polyhydroxy sub-stituted, piperazine rings cleavage and so on were the main reaction of CIP in E-CME process. Additionally, the chemical oxygen demand (COD) residue after E-CME process could be effectively eliminated by up-flow anaerobic filter (UAF), owing to the significant improvement of wastewater biodegradability by E-CME pretreatment. This study provides a new way for co-friend recycling of BFD and a highly-efficient, cost-sffective technology for CIP wastewater treatment.

Pre-treatment of pyridine wastewater by new cathodic-anodic-electrolysis packing

A novel cathodic-anodic-electrolysis packing (CAEP) used in the treatment of pyridine wastewater was researched, which mainly consisted of 4,4'-diamino-2,2'-disulfonic acid (DSD acid) industrial iron sludge. The physical properties and morphology of the packing were studied. The CAEP was used in a column reactor during the pretreatment of pyridine wastewater. The influence of pH, hydraulic retention time (HRT), the air-liquid ratio (A/L) and the initial concentration of pyridine were investigated by measuring the removal of total organic carbon (TOC) and pyridine. The characterization results showed that the bulk density, grain density, water absorption percentage and specific surface area were 921kg/m³, 1086kg/m³, 25% and 29.89m²/g, respectively; the removal of TOC and pyridine could reach 50% and 58% at the optimal experimental conditions (pH=3, HRT=8hr, A/L=2). Notably, the surface of the packing was renewed constantly during the running of the filter, and the handling capacity was stable after running for three months.

Comparison of two modified coal ash ferric-carbon micro-electrolysis ceramic media for pretreatment of tetracycline wastewater

Application of modified sintering ferric-carbon ceramics (SFC) and sintering-free ferric-carbon ceramics (SFFC) based on coal ash and scrap iron for pretreatment of tetracycline (TET) wastewater was investigated in this article. Physical property, morphological character, toxic metal leaching content, and crystal component were studied to explore the application possibility of novel ceramics in micro-electrolysis reactors. The influences of operating conditions including influent pH, hydraulic retention time (HRT), and air-water ratio (A/W) on the removal of tetracycline were studied. The results showed that SFC and SFFC were suitable for application in micro-electrolysis reactors. The optimum conditions of SFC reactor were pH of 3, HRT of 7 h, and A/W of 10. For SFFC reactor, the optimum conditions were pH of 2, HRT of 7 h, and A/W of 15. In general, the TET removal efficiency of SFC reactor was better than that of SFFC reactor. However, the harden resistance of SFFC was better than that of SFC. Furthermore, the biodegradability of TET wastewater was improved greatly after micro-electrolysis pretreatment for both SFC and SFFC reactors.

Application of coupled zero-valent iron/biochar system for degradation of chlorobenzene-contaminated groundwater

A novel iron-carbon micro-electrolysis system, bamboo-derived biochar coupled with zero-valent iron (ZVI), was investigated for chlorobenzene (CB)-contaminated groundwater removal. Influences of initial pH value, mass ratio of the ZVI/Biochar, initial CB concentration and ionic strength of the ZVI/Biochar micro-electrolysis were studied. The results indicated that the increase of initial pH led to the decrease of the CB removal efficiency. While the optimum mass ratio of ZVI to biochar was 2:1, the improved initial concentration and reaction time were 33.68 mg/L and 4 h, respectively. When pH of 2, mass ratio of 2:1 and reaction time of 4 h were applied, the CB removal efficiency was 99.92%. Enhanced degradation of CB was observed with increased Cl^- concentration. When the Cl^- concentration of 1,000 mg/L and reaction time of 1 h were applied, the CB removal efficiency arrived at 98.2%. Additionally, considering that biochar is cost-effective and readily produced, the coupled ZVI/Biochar micro-electrolysis could represent an effective approach for the treatment of groundwater containing chlorinated organic compounds in the future.

Preparation of Cathode-Anode Integrated Ceramic Filler and Application in a Coupled ME-EGSB-SBR System for Chlortetracycline Industrial Wastewater Systematic Treatment

Chlortetracycline (CTC) contamination of aquatic systems has seriously threatened the environmental and human health throughout the world. Conventional biological treatments could not effectively treat the CTC industrial wastewater and few studies have been focused on the wastewater systematic treatment. Firstly, 40.0 wt% of clay, 30.0 wt% of dewatered sewage sludge (DSS), and 30.0 wt% of scrap iron (SI) were added to sinter the new media (cathode-anode integrated ceramic filler, CAICF). Subsequently, the nontoxic CAICF with rough surface and porous interior packed into ME reactor, severing as a pretreatment step, was effective in removing CTC residue and improving the wastewater biodegradability. Secondly, expanded granular sludge bed (EGSB) and sequencing batch reactor (SBR), serving as the secondary biological treatment, were mainly focusing on chemical oxygen demand (COD) and ammonia nitrogen (NH3-N) removal. The coupled ME-EGSB-SBR system removed about 98.0% of CODcr and 95.0% of NH3-N and the final effluent met the national discharged standard (C standard of CJ 343-2010, China). Therefore, the CTC industrial wastewater could be effectively treated by the coupled ME-EGSB-SBR system, which has significant implications for a cost-efficient system in CTC industrial systematic treatment and solid wastes (DSS and SI) treatment.
