A Review on Additives-assisted Ultrasound for Organic Pollutants Degradation

In the past 2 decades, considerable attentions have been paid to the sonochemical advanced oxidation processes (SAOPs) in the fields of pollutants removal. SAOPs are powerful methods for refractory pollutants degradation due to the free radicals (e.g., •OH and •H) generated by water pyrolysis and extremely high temperature and pressure in and around cavitation bubbles. Reports on various additives for the improvement of sonochemical pollutants degradation including oxidants, inorganic anions, etc. have been made. This paper presents a comprehensive review on the ultrasound (US) alone and sono-hybrid systems for various pollutants degradation. In this paper, the degradation efficiency of various pollutants in sono-hybrid systems are elucidated in detail, and particular emphasis is placed on the reaction mechanism of additives in US for the enhancement of pollutants degradation. The problems on the applications of the current sono-hybrid systems are identified and discussed, and the outlooks for further in-depth studies on the challenges and some research needs for the applications of SAOPs for the removal of organic pollutants from aquatic systems are made at the end.

Enhanced energy efficiency for the complete mineralization of diclofenac by self-sequential ultrasound enhanced ozonation

Diclofenac (DCF), an anti-biodegradable drug, needs to be post-treated after conventional biochemical treatment. In this paper, ultrasound enhanced ozonation (UEO) under different conditions was employed to degrade DCF. The results showed that DCF was completely degraded by UEO in 8 min and complete total organic carbon (TOC) removal occurred in 120 min. The generation of ˙OH via UEO could be achieved through ozone decomposition, H2O sonolysis, and ozone sonolysis, which contributed to the complete mineralization of DCF. The total amount of ˙OH produced by 200 kHz UEO was 3.8 times higher than that of single ozonation plus single sonolysis in 120 min. Typical persistent intermediates of DCF, such as oxalic acid and oxamic acid, could be efficiently degraded by UEO. It was found that 60 min ozonation followed by 60 min UEO had the best mineralization energy efficiency (MEE) (113 mg (kW h)-1) at the base of complete mineralization and there was one-third reduction in the total energy consumption compared to that for single UEO. Based on the analysis of the evolution index (EI), pH was selected as the best judgment index of self-sequential UEO for indicating the time point of ultrasound irradiation, which saves irradiation times for practical use.

A Review on Ultrasonic Catalytic Microbubbles Ozonation Processes: Properties, Hydroxyl Radicals Generation Pathway and Potential in Application

Ozone-based advanced oxidant processes (AOPs) have attracted remarkable attention as an alternative and effective approach for mineralization of refractory organics to innocuous substances. Key issues for ozone-based AOPs mainly focused on how to enhance ozone mass transfer and improve the production of hydroxyl radicals. Unfortunately, great efforts have been made, though, the application of ozone-based AOPs still remained in the laboratory scale due to lack of understanding of mechanisms of these hybrid processes. Besides, obtaining the balance of economical-technical feasibility is a great challenge. Ultrasonic catalytic microbubbles ozonation could be considered as a promising method, despite that there are a few studies that addressed this potential technology. Therefore, in this review, summaries about ozone-based microbubbles process, ultrasonic catalytic ozonation process, and ultrasonic catalytic microbubbles ozonation process have been provided in order to give a novel prospective about these hybrid technologies. The main influential parameters, such as initial pH, ozone dosage, intake flow rate, operating temperature, bubble size distributions, ultrasonic frequency, ultrasonic power density, and natural water constituents have also been well discussed. We truly hope that this paper will bring convenience to researchers that are devoted in the field of application of ozone-based AOPs for mineralizing refractory organics in wastewater.

Pilot-scale treatment of atrazine production wastewater by UV/O3/ultrasound: Factor effects and system optimization

This study shed light on removing atrazine from pesticide production wastewater using a pilot-scale UV/O₃/ultrasound flow-through system. A significant quadratic polynomial prediction model with an adjusted R² of 0.90 was obtained from central composite design with response surface methodology. The optimal atrazine removal rate (97.68%) was obtained at the conditions of 75 W UV power, 10.75 g h^-1 O₃ flow rate and 142.5 W ultrasound power. A Monte Carlo simulation aided artificial neural networks model was further developed to quantify the importance of O₃ flow rate (40%), UV power (30%) and ultrasound power (30%). Their individual and interaction effects were also discussed in terms of reaction kinetics. UV and ultrasound could both enhance the decomposition of O₃ and promote hydroxyl radical (OH·) formation. Nonetheless, the dose of O₃ was the dominant factor and must be optimized because excess O₃ can react with OH·, thereby reducing the rate of atrazine degradation. The presence of other organic compounds in the background matrix appreciably inhibited the degradation of atrazine, while the effects of Cl^-, CO₃^2- and HCO₃^- were comparatively negligible. It was concluded that the optimization of system performance using response surface methodology and neural networks would be beneficial for scaling up the treatment by UV/O₃/ultrasound at industrial level.

Enhanced sulfamethoxazole ozonation by noble metal-free catalysis based on magnetic Fe3O4 nanoparticles: catalytic performance and degradation mechanism

In this research, Fe₃O₄ nanoparticles were prepared by a low-cost route free of other agents, and applied in the catalysis of sulfamethoxazole (SMX) ozonation.

Bromate oxidized from bromide during sonolytic ozonation

Sonolytic ozonation (US/O3) is an effective way to degrade many pollutants in drinking water as the elevated mass transfer rate of ozone gas and the enhanced forming of hydroxyl radicals (OH). This work investigated the formation of bromate (BrO3(-)) from bromide (Br(-)) in sonolytic ozonation. At neutral pH, the bromate conversion rate ([BrO3(-)]/[Br(-)]0) was increased to 60% by ultrasound at continuous ozone flow (0-0.2Lmin(-1)), much higher than that without ultrasound or without bubbling. This indicates that the promoting effect of sonolysis on BrO3(-) formation is mainly due to the sonolytic decomposition of ozone and the enhancement of gas-liquid transfer. The [BrO3(-)]/[Br(-)]0 was increased with increasing pH. In addition, the reduction of HOBr/OBr(-) with ultrasound demonstrates that bromate may be inhibited as the bromide was formed with the H2O2 generation under ultrasound. This suggests the competition between bromate and bromide during the US/O3 led to the inhibition of bromate formation at high ozone flow. Therefore, our result reveals that the bromate formation under ultrasound is improved remarkably in US/O3 in quick treatment with proper ozone flow (<0.2Lmin(-1)).

Sulfamethoxazole degradation by ultrasound/ozone oxidation process in water: kinetics, mechanisms, and pathways

In this research, sulfamethoxazole (SMX) degradation was investigated using ultrasound (US), ozone (O3) and ultrasound/ozone oxidation process (UOOP). It was proved that ultrasound significantly enhanced SMX ozonation by assisting ozone in producing more hydroxyl radicals in UOOP. Ultrasound also made the rate constants improve by kinetics analysis. When ultrasound was added to the ozonation process, the reaction rate increased by 6-26% under different pH conditions. Moreover, main intermediates oxidized by US, O3 and UOOP system were identified. Although the main intermediates in ozonation and UOOP were similar, the introduction of ultrasound in UOOP had well improved the cleavage of S-N bond. In this condition SMX become much easier to be attacked, which led to enhanced SMX removal rate in UOOP compared to the other two examined processes. Finally, the SMX degradation pathways were proposed.
