Advanced membrane-based high-value metal recovery from wastewater

Considering the circular economy and environmental protection, sustainable recovery of high-value metals from wastewater has become a prominent concern. Unlike conventional methods featuring extensive chemicals or energy consumption, membrane separation technology plays a crucial role in facilitating the sustainable and efficient recovery of valuable metals from wastewater due to its attractive features. In this review, we first briefly summarize the sustainable supply chain and significance of sustainable recovery of aqueous high-value metals. Then, we review the most recent advances and application potential in promising state-of-the-art membrane-based technologies for recovery of high-value metals (silver, gold, rhenium, platinum, ruthenium, palladium, iridium, osmium, and rhodium) from wastewater effluents. In particular, pressure-based membranes, liquid membranes, membrane distillation, forward osmosis, electrodialysis and membrane-based hybrid technologies and their mechanism of high-value metal recovery is thoroughly discussed. Then, engineering application and economic sustainability are also discussed for membrane-based high-value metal recovery. The review finally concludes with a critical and insightful overview of the techno-economic viability and future research direction of membrane technologies for efficient high-value metal recovery from wastewater.

Modeling of liquid-liquid hollow fiber supported membrane equilibrium including the non-ideality of the aqueous and organic phases in the recovery systems of radionuclides in sulphate-halide/aliquat-336 in O-xylene

Study of modeling of L/LHFSLM equilibrium based on the Non-ideality of the Aqueous and Organic Phases in the Recovery of 152+154Eu in H2SO4-Halides/Aliquat-336 in 20% kerosene as feeding phase at pH 3.78-4.55, by the ratio 89.7%,while separation of 90Sr and 134Cs there was a problem between them by using hollow HFSLM only, the reason for that the organic solvents affect the rate of reaction in the Diamino-1,2-cyclohexane/tetraacetic acid (DCTA) as stripping phase concentration from 0.15 to 0.55 mol/L. The system has been developed; this led to the extraction of elements in the same time. The Matlab software program was introduced to obtain some mathematical parameters like, standard deviation (SD), equilibrium constant Kex and standard deviation coefficient (SDC).

Enhancing Palladium Recovery Rates in Industrial Residual Solutions through Electrodialysis

Palladium is a vital commodity in the industry. To guarantee a stable supply in the future, it is imperative to adopt more effective recycling practices. In this proof-of-concept study, we explore the potential of electrodialysis to enhance the palladium concentration in a residual solution of palladium recycling, thus promoting higher recovery rates. Experiments were conducted using an industrial hydrochloric acid solution containing around 1000 mg/L of palladium, with a pH below 1. Two sets of membranes, Selemion AMVN/CMVN and Fujifilm Type 12 AEM/CEM, were tested at two current levels. The Fujifilm membranes, which are designed for low permeability of water, show promising results, recovering around 40% of palladium within a two-hour timeframe. The Selemion membranes were inefficient due to excessive water transport. All membranes accumulated palladium in their structures. Anion-exchange membranes showed higher palladium accumulation at lower currents, while cation-exchange membranes exhibited increased palladium accumulation at higher currents. Owing to the low concentration of palladium and the presence of abundant competing ions, the current efficiency remained below 2%. Our findings indicate a strong potential for augmenting the palladium stage in industrial draw solutions through electrodialysis, emphasizing the importance of membrane properties and process parameters to ensure a viable process. Beyond the prominent criteria of high permselectivity and low resistance, minimizing the permeability of water within IEMs remains a key challenge to mitigating the efficiency loss associated with uncontrolled mixing of the electrolyte solution.

Carrier-mediated extraction: Applications in extraction and microextraction methods

The present review is mainly focused on the overview of carrier mediated extraction (principles and applications) being reported over the last two decades and discusses the extraction process through carriers in various extraction methods such as Bulk liquid membranes, supported liquid membranes, emulsion liquid membranes and polymer inclusion membranes. Several types of carriers such as neutral, anionic, cationic, macrocyclic and supramulecular carriers are discussed. Also their application for metal, anions, drugs and environmental compounds are investigated. Carriers have been demonstrated to be useful for the selective extraction and recovery of numerous cations and anions enhancing the extraction properties of traditional solvent extraction and ion-exchange processes. Several types of carriers have different transport mechanisms. In these mechanisms, transport configurations are addressed and emphasized and the detailed information on the type of carrier are presented along with their specific separation modes. The performance of different carriers in terms of selectivity as well as efficiency are also discussed. Finally, the application of different carriers for the extraction of various compounds are compared and reviewed. To our best knowledge no reviews have been published on carrier-mediated extraction methods.

Development of Two novel silica based symmetric triazine-ring opening N-donor ligands functional adsorbents for highly efficient separation of palladium from HNO3 solution

The synthesis and characterization of two novel symmetric triazine-ring opening ligands CA-MP (pyridine derivative)/CA-BOPhen (1,10-phenanthroline derivative) functionalized SiO₂-P (P = Polymer) adsorbents for separation of Pd(II) from HNO₃ solutions are presented. SEM, N₂ adsorption/desorption isotherms, TGA and EDS spectroscopy characterization results showed that CA-MP and CA-BOPhen were successfully introduced into the pores of SiO₂-P carrier via physical intermolecular interactions. CA-MP@SiO₂-P and CA-BOPhen@SiO₂-P show high efficiency, high selectivity, extremely fast adsorption rates towards Pd(II) over 19 typical fission or corrosion products in HNO₃ solution. The distribution coefficient K_d values of CA-MP@SiO₂-P and CA-BOPhen@SiO₂-P are up to 206.5 and 205.7 cm³/g, respectively, within 10-15 min of contact time in 0.4 M HNO₃. The adsorption capacities of them to Pd(II) were determined to be 0.36 mmol/g and 0.23 mmol/g, respectively. The fast adsorption rates and high selectivity of two adsorbents towards Pd(II) were related to the formation of the highly preorganized complex [Pd(NO₃)(L)]⁺ (L = CA-MP or CA-BOPhen). These results demonstrate that CA-MP@SiO₂-P and CA-BOPhen@SiO₂-P possess great potential for highly efficient removal of Pd(II) from highly active liquid waste (HLW).

Non-Dispersive Extraction of Ge(IV) from Aqueous Solutions by Cyanex 923: Transport and Modeling Studies

Transport process of germanium from an aqueous solution containing oxalic acid and 100 mg/L Ge was studied. Cyanex 923 immobilized in a polytetrafluoroethylene membrane was employed as a carrier in a flat-sheet supported liquid membrane (FSSLM) system. The speciation of the germanium ion in the oxalic acid medium and related diagrams were applied to study the transport of germanium. The effective parameters such as oxalic acid, carrier concentration, and strip reagent composition were evaluated in this study. Based on the experimental data, the oxalic acid and carrier concentrations of 0.075 mol/L and 20% v/v were the condition in which the efficient germanium transport was achieved, respectively. The concentration range of 0.04–0.1 mol/L was selected for sodium hydroxide (NaOH) as a strip reagent providing the best efficiency to transport germanium through the supported liquid membrane (SLM) system. Furthermore, the permeation model was obtained to calculate the mass transfer resistance of the membrane (Δm) and feed (Δf) phases. According to the results, the values of 1 and 1345 s/cm were found for Δm and Δf, respectively.

Transport behavior of actinides and lanthanides across a supported liquid membrane using an unexplored monoamide, N,N′-bis(2-ethyl hexyl) α-hydroxy acetamide (BEHGA)

An unexplored novel monoamide N,N′-bis(2-ethyl hexyl) α-hydroxy acetamide (BEHGA) was used as a carrier for transport of Am(III), Eu(III), Pu(IV/VI) and U(VI) from HNO3 medium across a supported liquid membrane (SLM). Various parameters were investigated to obtain the optimum transport conditions. Transport rates followed the trend Pu(IV)>Am(III)≥Eu(III)>U(VI)> Pu(VI). The effects of macro concentrations of U(VI) and Nd(III) on the transport rate of Am(III) were studied. The diffusion coefficient value for the Am(III)-BEHGA system in HNO3 medium was found to be ~1.8×10−6 cm2/s. The standard deviation of the results obtained from transport experiments by this extractant was found to be ±5%. The membrane was found to be highly selective for actinides and lanthanides with respect to different fission products.

Preparation and characterization of a novel macroporous silica-bipyridine asymmetric multidentate functional adsorbent and its application for heavy metal palladium removal

The effective removal of heavy metal ¹⁰⁷Pd(II) from highly active liquid waste (HLW) is very valuable for reducing its hazardous and risk to public health and environment. For this purpose, a novel silica-bipyridine multidentate functional adsorbent was synthesized by vacuum infusing a new asymmetric N-donor ligand CA-MTBP (bipyridine derivative) into the macroporous SiO₂-P support. SEM, N₂ adsorption-desorption isotherms, TGA, XRD, FT-IR, ²⁹Si solid-state NMR and XPS spectroscopy were utilized to systematically characterize the physicochemical properties of the adsorbent. The characterization results indicated that CA-MTBP was successfully immobilized onto the pores of SiO₂-P by intermolecular interaction. Strong hydrogen-bonding interactions identified by single crystal structure of the ligand and ²⁹Si NMR may play a key role in achieving this immobilization. TGA and TOC studies showed that CA-MTBP/SiO₂-P had excellent thermal stability and highly HNO₃ resistance. EDS and XPS investigations provided directly evidences for Pd(II) being selectively adsorbed onto the adsorbent. The adsorbent had excellent adsorption capability, fast adsorption kinetics and high selectivity for Pd(II) over other typical tested metals in HNO₃ media.

Efficient transport of Am(III) from nitric acid medium using a new conformationally constrained (N,N,N',N'-tetra-2-ethylhexyl)7-oxabicyclo[2.2.1]heptane-2,3-dicarboxamide across a supported liquid membrane

Am(III) is one of the most hazardous radionuclide present in nuclear fuel cycle. A new conformationally constrained diamide, (N,N,N',N'-tetra-2-ethylhexyl)7-oxabicyclo[2.2.1]heptane-2,3-dicarboxamide (OBDA) was studied for Am(III) transport from HNO3 medium across a Supported Liquid Membrane. Transport rate was observed to be significantly fast with ∼95% transport of Am(III) within 1h using 0.1M OBDA in the presence of 15% isodecyl alcohol (IDA)/n-dodecane as carrier. The mechanism of transport was investigated by studying various parameters like feed HNO3/NaNO3 concentration, OBDA concentration in the membrane, membrane pore size, membrane thickness etc. From these studies, the mechanism of transport was found to be diffusion controlled with diffusion co-efficient value of 5.1×10(-6)cm(2)/s. The membrane was found to be highly selective for tri- and tetra-valent actinides, and trivalent lanthanides. OBDA based membrane was found to be stable for at least for ten consecutive cycles of operation.

Supported Liquid Membrane Principle and Its Practices: A Short Review

The present paper on the supported liquid membrane (SLM) deals with the general principles and applications, followed by the uphill transportation characteristic of SLM. The liquid-liquid extraction with supported liquid membrane is one of the best alternate and promising technologies for the extraction of metal ions from solutions over other hydrometallurgical separation processes. The salient features of the supported liquid membrane (SLM) technique such as simultaneous extraction and stripping, low solvent inventory, process economy, high efficiency, less extractant consumption, and operating costs are discussed in detail. The supported liquid membrane of hollow fiber type provides high interfacial surface area for achieving maximum metal flux. Also the use of different organic extractants for SLM has been discussed.
