Efficient and versatile fibrous adsorbent based on magnetic amphiphilic composites of chrysotile/carbon nanostructures for the removal of ethynilestradiol

Microstructure regulation and enhanced VOC removal performance of carbon aerogels by surface carbon nanotube grown

Carbon aerogels were newly employed in adsorption for volatile organic compounds (VOCs) as an emerging material. In contrast, the microstructure and high carbon consumption are the primary factors restricting their application scenarios. Carbon nanotubes, recognized for their controllable cylindrical hollow structure and hydrophobic walls, generally possess higher adsorption capacities than typical carbon adsorbents. In this study, carbon nanotubes were grown on the surface of carbon aerogels using the chemical vapor deposition method by controlling different deposition conditions. The results showed that the modified samples displayed the maximum adsorption capacity of 145.0 mg/g and 178.3 mg/g for toluene and 1,2- dichlorobenzene, respectively. After ten regeneration cycles, the performance decreased by 7.9 % and 5.6 %, respectively. Meanwhile, the carbon replenishment was about 0.2 g/g, which is an excellent complement for carbon consumption. Various characterization patterns showed that deposition temperature was reflected in its deposition rate, deposition times influenced the formation of multi-walled carbon nanotubes, and deposition concentration affected the length of carbon nanotubes. This study offers valuable insight into the growth patterns of carbon nanotubes and the microscale regulation of carbon material surfaces, and this method is expected to be an effective means of carbon replenishment, carbon addition to carbon-poor materials, and enhancement of VOCs removal performance, and the growth mechanisms investigated are instructive for practical applications.

Adsorption of estrone, 17β-estradiol, and 17α-ethinylestradiol from water onto modified multi-walled carbon nanotubes, carbon cryogel, and carbonized hydrothermal carbon

Carbon materials of different structural and textural properties (multi-walled carbon nanotubes, carbon cryogel, and carbonized hydrothermal carbon) were used as adsorbents for the removal of estrone, 17β-estradiol, and 17α-ethinylestradiol from aqueous solutions. Chemical modification and/or activation were applied to alter surface characteristics and to increase the adsorption and desorption efficiency of carbon materials. Surfaces of treated and untreated carbon materials were characterized through the examination of the textural properties, the nature of surface functional groups, and surface acidity. It was found that the adsorption capacity of tested carbon materials is not directly proportional to the specific surface area and the content of surface oxygen groups. However, a high ratio of surface mesoporosity affected the adsorption process most prominently, by increasing adsorption capacity and the rate of the adsorption process. Adsorption of estrone, 17β-estradiol, and 17α-ethinylestradiol followed pseudo-second-order kinetic model, while the equilibrium adsorption data were best fitted with the Langmuir isotherm model. Calculated mean adsorption energy values, along with the thermodynamic parameters, indicated that removal of selected hormones was dominated by the physisorption mechanism. High values of adsorption efficiency (88-100 %) and Langmuir adsorption capacities (29.45-194.7 mg/g) imply that examined materials, especially mesoporous carbon cryogel and multi-walled carbon nanotubes, can be used as powerful adsorbents for relatively fast removal of estrogen hormones from water.

Steroid hormone micropollutant removal from water with activated carbon fiber-ultrafiltration composite membranes

Short activated carbon fibers (ACF) with high surface area were fabricated via carbonization in N₂ and activation in CO₂ at high temperatures, with cellulose fibers as the raw materials. The obtained ACF were subsequently deposited into the support layer of a polyethersulfone (PES) ultrafiltration membrane by a facile filtration process to obtain the sandwich structured ACF-PES composite membrane. The hormone (17β-estradiol, E2) adsorption kinetics and isotherm of ACF in static conditions, as well as E2 removal by filtration with the ACF-PES composite membrane were investigated. In static conditions, ACF rapidly and efficiently adsorbs E2 evidenced by a high removal of >97 %. The fitting of second order kinetics and linear (Henry) adsorption isotherm models indicated the availability of easily accessible adsorption sites. Besides, such efficient E2 adsorption was contributed by many interactions between E2 and ACF, namely hydrophobic interactions, hydrogen bonding and π-π stacking. The incorporation of ACF in a PES membrane resulted in a minor loss of filtration flux compared with the control membrane, but significantly improved E2 removal through adsorption pathway. With only 1.0 mg ACF incorporated (loading 2.0 g/m²), the composite membrane could reject 76 % of E2 from a 100 ng/L solution at a flux of 450 L/m²∙h, demonstrating that ACF-PES can overcome the permeability-selectivity trade-off of traditional UF membranes.

Use of iron mining tailings from dams for carbon nanotubes synthesis in fluidized bed for 17α-ethinylestradiol removal

This work reports the use of an iron ore tailings from waste dam as a catalyst and support for carbon nanotubes synthesis and their application in the adsorption of the 17α-ethinylestradiol hormone. The synthesis was carried out by Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD) in a Fluidized Bed system using: ethylene at temperatures of 500, 600 and 700 °C, and acetonitrile at 500, 600, 700, 800 and 900 °C. The transmission electron microscopy (TEM) results showed that the two higher temperatures in each case favored the formation of nanostructures like carbon nanotubes (CNTs), with good yields. The ethylene source generated classic tubular structures of multiple walls. On the other hand, acetonitrile provided the formation of tubes with less organization, known as bamboo like. This morphology was caused by the insertion of nitrogen into the graphite structure (doping), which originates from the carbon source. The adsorptive capacity of the materials for 17α-Ethinylestradiol removal ranging from 9.2 mg g^-1 to 22.3 mg g^-1. The kinetic and adsorption isotherm studies were also performed for the systems. As for kinetics, all of them presented pseudo-second order behavior. In relation to the type of isotherm, the systems showed Freundlich behavior, that is, the adsorption occurs in multiple layers. Finally, it was concluded that the use of an iron ore tail as a catalyst in the production of CNTs by CVD is feasible. The materials synthesized still had good adsorptive capacity for an emerging contaminant, thus this study allowed the investigation of two environmental problems.

Role of [FeOx(OH)y] surface sites on the adsorption of β-lactamic antibiotics on Al2O3 supported Fe oxide

In this work, [FeOx(OH)y]/Al2O3 composites with different Fe oxyhydroxy contents, i.e. 10, 20 and 50wt% treated at 150, 200, 300 and 450°C were investigated as adsorbents of β-lactamic antibiotics, i.e. cephalexin, ceftriaxone and especially amoxicillin, from aqueous solutions. The obtained results showed that the nature of the surface Fe(3+) species play a fundamental role on the adsorption process. The most efficient adsorption was obtained for the sample 150Fe50A (50% [FeOx(OH)y] supported in Al2O3 treated at 150°C) whereas the thermal treatment at higher temperatures caused a strong decrease on the adsorption capacity. Mössbauer, XRD, FTIR, Raman, TG-MS, SEM, CHN and BET of the composite 150Fe50A suggested an approximate composition of FeO0.65(OH)1.7 whereas at 450°C strong dehydroxylation process takes place to form FeO1.4(OH)0.21. These results combined with competitive adsorption using amoxicillin mixed with phosphate or H2O2 suggest that the antibiotic molecules adsorb by complexation on surface sites likely based on FeOx(OH)y by the replacement of the labile OH ligands.

Growth of carbon structures on chrysotile surface for organic contaminants removal from wastewater

Amphiphilic magnetic composites were produced based on chrysotile mineral and carbon structures by chemical vapor deposition at different temperatures (600-900 °C) and cobalt as catalyst. The materials were characterized by elemental analysis, X-ray diffraction, vibrating sample magnetometry, adsorption and desorption of N2, Raman spectroscopy, scanning electronic microscopy, and thermal analysis showed an effective growth of carbon structures in all temperatures. It was observed that at 800 and 900 °C, a large amount of carbon structures are formed with fewer defects than at 600 and 700 °C, what contributes to their stability. In addition, the materials present magnetic phases that are important for their application as catalysts and adsorbents. The materials have shown to be very active to remove the oil dispersed in a real sample of emulsified wastewater from biodiesel production and to remove methylene blue by adsorption and oxidation via heterogeneous Fenton mechanism.

Adsorption of the harmful hormone ethinyl estradiol inside hydrophobic cavities of CTA(+) intercalated montmorillonite

Hydrophobic cavities produced by cetyltrimethylammonium cation (CTA(+)) exchanged and trapped in the interlayer space of montmorillonite were used to remove the harmful hormone contaminant ethinyl estradiol (EE2) from water. X-ray diffraction, thermogravimetry/derivative thermogravimetry, elemental analysis (carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen), Fourier transform infrared, scanning electron microscopy/energy dispersive spectroscopy, Brunauer-Emmett-Teller and contact angle analyses showed that the intercalation of 9, 16 and 34 wt% CTA(+) in the montmorillonite resulted in the d001 expansion from 1.37 to 1.58, 2.09 and 2.18 nm, respectively. EE2 adsorption experiments showed that the original clay montmorillonite does not remove EE2 from water whereas the intercalated composites showed high efficiency with adsorption capacities of 4.3, 8.8 and 7.3 mg g(-1) for M9CTA(+), M16CTA(+) and M34CTA(+), respectively. Moreover, experiments with montmorillonite simply impregnated with cetyltrimethylammonium bromide showed that the intercalation of CTA(+) to form the hydrophobic cavity is very important for the adsorption properties. Simple solvent extraction can be used to remove the adsorbed EE2 without significant loss of CTA(+), which allows the recovery and reuse of the adsorbent for at least five times.
