Abstract
Ulcerative colitis (UC), characterized by syndromes including abdominal pain, bloody stool, diarrhea, weight loss, and repeated relapse, is a non-specific inflammatory intestinal disease. In recent years, with the changing dietary habits in China, the incidence of UC has shown an upward trend. UC belongs to the category of recorded as "diarrhea," "chronic dysentery," and "hematochezia" in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), and Shenling BaiZhu powder (SLBZP) is one of the most effective and commonly used prescriptions. In this review, we aim to systematically summarize the clinical application and pharmacological mechanism of SLBZP in the treatment of UC to provide a theoretical basis for its clinical use and experimental evaluation of SLBZP. Our results showed that both SLBZP and SLBZP in combination with chemical drugs, have a significant therapeutic effect against UC with few adverse reactions. Furthermore, combined therapy was better than western medicine. Further, pathophysiological studies indicated that SLBZP has anti-inflammatory, immunomodulatory, antioxidant effects, regulation relative cell signal transduction and regulation of gut microbiota. Although evidence suggests superior therapeutic efficacy of SLBZP for treating UC and the relative mechanism has been studied extensively, various shortcomings limit the existing research on the topic. There is a lack of UC animal models, especially UC with TCM syndromes, with no uniform standard and certain differences between the animal model and clinical syndrome. The dosage, dosage form, and therapeutic time of SLBZP are inconsistent and lack pharmacological verification, and clinical trial data are not detailed or sufficiently rigorous. In addition, SLSZP is composed of multiple Chinese drugs that contain massive numbers of ingredients and which or several components contribute to therapeutic effects. How they work synergistically together remains unknown. Therefore, on the one hand, large sample prospective cohort studies to clarify the clinical efficacy and safety of SLBZP in the treatment of UC are needed. In contrast, researchers should strengthen the study of the molecular biological mechanism of active ingredients and its synergistic actions, clarifying the mechanism of SLBZP in treating UC by multi-component, multi-target, and multi-pathway.

Abstract
Abstract
In present paper pure and Ni-N-codoped TiO2 nanoparticles have been synthesized via sol gel technique. Crystal phase formation of as synthesized nanoparticles was determined from x-ray diffraction which confirms the existence of anatase phase of TiO2. The average crystalline size was determined from x-ray diffraction and estimated from Transmission Electron Micrographs found to vary from 24.8 nm to 10.2 nm. The morphology was studied by Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy and reveals that the synthesized nanoparticles are highly crystalline, spherical and small agglomerated. It is observed that on doping the agglomeration decreases and is due to relative rates of growth process. The band gap energy was calculated from UV–visible absorption spectroscopy and found to be 3.12, 1.81, 1.69 and 1.53 eV respectively. The appearance of emission bands at 453, 470, 483 and 494 nm in Photoluminescence spectra could be arising from defect energy states caused by oxygen vacancies within the forbidden region of TiO2.The structural formation of the synthesized nanoparticles is investigated from Fourier-transform-infrared and Energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy measurements. Photocatalytic degradation efficiency of as synthesized nanoparticles against two different dyes (Congo red and Methyl orange) was investigated under visible light source of wavelength 420–520 nm and is found to increase with dopant concentration (x). It is observed that the increase in Photocatalytic degradation efficiency of synthesized nanoparticles is attributed to decrease in carrier recombination rate arises from the decrease in band gap energy. On the basis of these observations it is concluded that the increase in Photocatalytic activity is due to increase in surface area arises from the decrease in average crystalline size of the synthesized nanoparticles.

Abstract
In this work, heterostructures of coupled TiO2@MoS2with different phases of MoS2were synthesized via hydrothermal technique. The prepared materials were thoroughly characterized using various techniques, including XRD, SEM, transmission electron microscopy, Brunauer-Emmet-Teller, XPS, Zeta potential and UV-vis spectroscopy. The optimized nanocomposites were tested for the photocatalytic degradation of methyl Orange (MO) under visible light as well as the adsorption of Rhodamine b (RhB) and methelene blue (MB) dyes. The TiO2@1T/2H-MoS2heterostructures exhibited a narrow bandgap compared to the other studied nanomaterials. A remarkable photodegradation efficiency of TiO2@1T/2H-MoS2was observed, which completely degraded 20 ppm of MO after 60 min with high stability over four successive cycles. This can be assigned to the formation of unique heterostructures with aligned energy bands between MoS2nanosheets and TiO2nanobelts. The formation of these novel interfaces promoted the electron transfer and increased the separation efficiency of carriers, resulting in high photocatalytic degradation. Furthermore, the adsorption efficiency of TiO2@1T/2H-MoS2was unique, 20 ppm solutions of RhB and MB were removed after 1 and 2 min, respectively. The superior adsorption performance of the TiO2@1T/2H-MoS2can be attributed to its high surface area (279.9 m2g-1) and the rich concentration of active sites. The kinetics and the isothermal analysis revealed that the TiO2@1T/2H MoS2heterstructures have maximum adsorption capacity of 1200 and 970 mg g-1for RhB and MB, respectively. This study provides a powerful way for designing an effective photocatalyst and adsorbent TiO2-based nanocomposites for water remediation.

Abstract
Interfacial processes, including adsorption and catalysis, play crucial roles in environmental contaminant removal. Mechanochemical activation (MCA) emerges as a competitive method to improve the performance of adsorbents and catalysts. The development and application of MCA in the last decades are thereby systematically reviewed, particularly highlighting its contribution to interfacial process modulation. Two typical apparatuses for MCA are ball milling (BaM) and bead milling (BeM). Compared to BaM, BeM is able to yield a much higher MCA intensity, because it could pulverize bulk solid particles to nearly 100 nm. Since MCA intensity on the adsorbents and catalysts is directly responsible for the contaminant removal afterwards, quantitative and qualitative determination methods for valid MCA intensity are introduced. MCA benefits both the adsorption kinetics and capacity of powdered activated carbon by increasing the specific surface area. Carbon oxidation should be given an additional attention, but potentially favors the adsorption of heavy metals. MCA favors the catalyst performance by providing abundant surface functional group and increasing the free energy in the near-surface region. Finally, the future research needs are identified.

Abstract
A facile and feasible method was successfully utilized to incorporate Bi2O3 and g-C3N4 quantum dots on TiO2 surface to synthesize a novel composite g-C3N4/TiO2/Bi2O3. The photocatalytic activity of the composite g-C3N4/TiO2/Bi2O3 for degradation of dyes under sunlight and UV light irradiation was evaluated. It possessed the higher photocatalytic performance than that of pristine TiO2 or g-C3N4 under the same conditions. Under sunlight irradiation, the reaction rate constants of the g-C3N4/TiO2/Bi2O3 was about 4.2 times and 3.3 times higher than that of TiO2 and g-C3N4, respectively. The promising photocatalytic performance was attributed to the broader light absorption range and efficient separation of photoinduced carriers. Moreover, based on the TEM, XPS, XRD, UV-vis spectrum, radicals scavenging test and Mott–Schottky analysis systematic mechanism for photodegradation process was proposed. This work provides a promising strategy for the modification of TiO2-based semiconductors by incorporating different quantum dots and promoting the efficiency of the photocatalysts in practical application. A facile and feasible method was successfully utilized to incorporate Bi2O3 and g-C3N4 quantum dots on TiO2 surface to synthesize a novel composite g-C3N4/TiO2/Bi2O3.![]()

Abstract
In this study, bismuth-TiO2 nanotube (Bi-TNT) composites were used for the treatment of industrial wastewater. Bi-TNT were synthesized using two- and one-step anodization methods. The obtained composites were analyzed using X-ray diffraction, field emission scanning electron microscopy, UV-visible diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, Energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. For the two-step Bi-TNT composites, we investigated the effect of different Bi deposition times, Bi concentrations, and Bi deposition voltages on photodegradation efficiency. For the one-step Bi-TNT composites, we investigated the effect of different anodization voltages, anodization times, and Bi concentrations. Initially, the optimal synthesis conditions for two- and one-step Bi-TNT catalysts were identified and then these optimized conditions were used for industrial wastewater treatment that was collected from Banwol Sihwa Industrial Complex Republic of Korea. The Bi-TNT two- and one-step composites showed 2.0 and 2.5 times higher photocatalytic activity, respectively, for industrial wastewater treatment than that of TNT in visible-light. Recycling of Bi-TNT composites showed that the one-step composite method was more efficient and stable than the two-step method because Bi coupling and nanotube formation simultaneously occurred.

Abstract
Photocatalytic degradation of p-Cresol was evaluated using the mixed oxide Bi2O3/TiO2 (containing 2 and 20% wt. Bi2O3 referred as TB2 and TB20) and was compared with bare TiO2 under simulated solar radiation. Materials were prepared by the classic sol-gel method. All solids exhibited the anatase phase by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Raman spectroscopy. The synthesized materials presented lower crystallite size and Eg value, and also higher surface area as Bi2O3 amount was increased. Bi content was quantified showing near to 70% of theoretical values in TB2 and TB20. Bi2O3 incorporation also was demonstrated by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Characterization of mixed oxides suggests a homogeneous distribution of Bi2O3 on TiO2 surface. Photocatalytic tests were carried out using a catalyst loading of 1 g L-1 under simulated solar light and visible light. The incorporation of Bi2O3 in TiO2 improved the photocatalytic properties of the synthesized materials obtaining better results with TB20 than the unmodified TiO2 under both radiation sources.

Abstract
TiO2 nanotubes (TNTs) were synthesized on a Ti sheet using the electrochemical anodization method. Bismuth (Bi) was coupled on the anodized TNTs via hydrothermal process. We verified the effect of different Bi concentrations on the photocatalytic properties of Bi-TNT composites. The obtained samples were characterized using field emission scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, UV-Vis diffuse reflectance spectra, and photoluminescence spectra. The Bi-TNT photocatalysts exhibited higher activities by factors of 6.6 and 3.6 toward chromium reduction and methylene blue degradation, respectively, under visible light than the pure TNTs. The Bi-TNT material was recycled to examine the stability of the catalyst. The quantum efficiency of the photocatalytic system was calculated, and the synergistic effects of bismuth modification were discussed. The Bi-TNT composites were observed to be promising for separation of photoinduced e- and h+ by decreasing charge recombination, and helped the formation of the hydroxyl radicals, h+, and superoxides used in the photocatalytic process.

Abstract
The enhancement of active triggered by surface deposition of Cu, Bi, and Ce containing oxidic species onto a high surface area anatase is analyzed through the calculation of the quantum efficiency for toluene photodegradation under UV and Sunlight-type illumination. To this end, series of Cu, Bi, and Ce containing oxides supported on anatase were synthesized having a growing content of the Cu, Bi, and Ce surface species and characterized with X-ray diffraction and photoelectron, UV-visible, and photoluminescence spectroscopies as well as transmission electron microscopy. Utilizing the surface concentration of Cu, Bi, and Ce species as a tool, we analyzed the influence of the system physicochemical properties affecting quantum efficiency in anatase-based materials. First, employing small surface concentrations of the Cu, Bi, and Ce species deposited onto (the unperturbed) anatase, we provided evidence that all steps of the photocatalytic event, including light absorption, charge recombination, as well as surface interaction with the pollutant and chemical output as to activity and selectivity have significance in the quantitative assessment of the enhancement of the efficiency parameter. Second, we analyzed samples rendering maximum quantum efficiency within all these series of materials. The study indicates that maximum enhancement over anatase displays a magnitude strongly dependent on the efficiency level of calculation and would thus require the use of the most accurate one, and that it occurs through a balance between optoelectronic and chemical properties of the composite materials. The (Cu, Bi, Ce) oxide-anatase interface plays a major role modulating the optoelectronic properties of the solids and thus the efficiency observable.

Abstract
An ultrasonication-assisted successive ionic layer adsorption and reaction (SILAR) strategy was developed for uniform deposition of high density p-type Bi2O3 quantum dots on n-type TiO2 nanotube arrays (Bi2O3@TiO2 NTAs), which were constructed by electrochemical anodization in ethylene glycol containing the electrolyte. Compared with pristine TiO2 NTAs, the Bi2O3 quantum dots sensitized TiO2 NTAs exhibited highly efficient photocatalytic degradation of methyl orange (MO). The kinetic constant of Bi2O3@TiO2 NTAs prepared by an ultrasonication-assisted SILAR process of 4 cycles was 1.95 times higher than that of the pristine TiO2 NTA counterpart. The highly efficient photocatalytic activity is attributed to the synergistic effect between the formation of a uniform p-n heterojunction with high-density for enhancing light absorption and facilitating photogenerated electron-hole separation/transfer. The results suggest that Bi2O3@TiO2 p-n heterojunction nanotube arrays are very promising for enhancing the photocatalytic activity and open up a promising strategy for designing and constructing high efficiency heterogeneous semiconductor photocatalysts.

Abstract
Bi2O3-decorated In2O3 nanorods were synthesized using a one-step process, and their structure, as well as the effects of decoration of In2O3 nanorods with Bi2O3 on the ethanol gas-sensing properties were examined. The multiple networked Bi2O3-decorated In2O3 nanorod sensor showed responses of 171-1774% at ethanol concentrations of 10-200 ppm at 200 °C. The responses of the Bi2O3-decorated In2O3 nanorod sensor were stronger than those of the pristine-In2O3 nanorod sensors by 1.5-4.9 times at the corresponding concentrations. The two sensors exhibited short response times and long recovery times. The optimal Bi concentration in the Bi2O3-decorated In2O3 nanorod sensor and the optimal operation temperature of the sensor were 20% and 200 °C, respectively. The Bi2O3-decorated In2O3 nanorod sensor showed selectivity for ethanol gas over other gases. The origin of the enhanced response, sensing speed, and selectivity for ethanol gas of the Bi2O3-decorated In2O3 nanorod sensor to ethanol gas is discussed.

Abstract
This work aims at the exploration of nanostructured ferroelectric-material-modified semiconductor electrodes for enhanced photo-induced activity. A well-aligned BiFeO3/TiO2-nanotubes (NTs) array with visible-light activity was successfully synthesized on a titanium sheet by combining anodization and an ultrasonic-immersion method followed by annealing. The structural and optical properties of the TiO2-NTs and the composite BiFeO3/TiO2-NTs were comparatively characterized. The composite BiFeO3/TiO2-NTs grown on a Ti sheet and used as an electrode exhibited a stronger absorption in the visible region and a much higher photoconversion efficiency than the pure TiO2-NTs/Ti electrode. Electrochemical impedance investigation attested to a significant improvement of the interfacial electron-transfer kinetics with enhanced separation of electron-hole pairs. The as-prepared composite electrode showed a high efficiency for photoelectrocatalytic degradation towards rhodamine B under visible-light irradiation (λ > 400 nm). The enhanced photoelectrocatalytic activity of the composite electrode could be attributed to the synergistic effect between the lowered electron-hole recombination rate by the applied bias and the wider spectral response promoted by the BiFeO3 component.

Abstract
Synthesis--particularly by electrochemical anodization-, growth mechanism and chemical sensing properties of pure, doped and mixed titania tubular arrays are reviewed. The first part deals on how anodization parameters affect the size, shape and morphology of titania nanotubes. In the second part fabrication of sensing devices based on titania nanotubes is presented, together with their most notable gas sensing performances. Doping largely improves conductivity and enhances gas sensing performances of TiO2 nanotubes.
