Characteristics of cesium ion sorption from aqueous solution on bentonite- and carbon nanotube-based composites

Functional upcycling of waste PET plastic to the hybrid magnetic microparticles adsorbent for cesium removal

Accumulation of mismanaged plastic in the environment and the appearance of emerging plastic-derived pollutants such as microplastics strongly demand technologies for waste plastic utilization. In this study, polyethylene terephthalate (PET) from waste plastic bottles was directly utilized to prepare a matrix of an adsorbent for cesium (Cs+) removal. The organic matrix of PET-derived oligomers obtained by aminolysis depolymerization was impregnated with bentonite clay and magnetite nanoparticles (Fe3O4 NPs), playing the roles as a major adsorptive medium for Cs+ removal and as a functional component to primarily provide efficient separation of the hybrid adsorbent from aqueous system, respectively. The obtained hybrid composite microparticles were next tested as an adsorbent for the removal of Cs+ cation from aqueous solutions. The adsorption process was characterized by fast kinetics reaching ca. 60% of the equilibrium adsorption capacity within 5 min and the maximum adsorption capacity toward Cs+ was found to be 26.8 mg/g. The adsorption process was primarily dominated by the cationic exchange in bentonite, which was not significantly affected by the admixture of the competing mono- and divalent cations (Na+, K+, and Mg2+). The proposed approach here exploits the sustainable utilization scenario of plastic waste-derived material to template complex multifunctional nanocomposites that can find applications for pollution cleaning and environmental remediation.

Unraveling the effect of CDI electrode characteristics on Cs removal from the perspective of ion transfer and energy composition

Capacitive deionization (CDI) is surprisingly efficient to remove the aqueous Cs ion due to its small hydrated size and low hydration energy. But current experimental techniques fail in investigating deeply into the influence of some key electrode characteristics due to the difficulty in experimentally fabricating the electrodes as desired. This work presents a dynamic transport model of salt ions in a flow-by CDI cell. By using this model, the electrode thickness, macro- and micro-porosity are investigated to evaluate Cs ion removal efficiency and energy efficiency particularly from the aspect of ion transfer by the approach of decomposing energy contribution. The results indicate that the thick electrode coupled with the high current could greatly improve the effluent quality, but reduce the salt adsorption capacity (SAC). The increasement of the current density from 3 A/m² to 6 A/m² greatly decreases the SAC from 4.0 mg/g to 0.8 mg/g. Lower current could prolong the charging period, leading to more ions stored in the micropore. Not all the electrical energy is consumed for separating ions from the feed as desired, but some are used for driving ions diffusing in the electrodes. Consequently charging efficiency will be reduced especially when the electrodes are characterized with high porosity. It is highlighted that future work is required to further consider the complex details of porous structure and pore connectivity.

Performance of molybdenum vanadate loaded on bentonite for retention of cesium-134 from aqueous solutions

This article studied the sorption behavior of Cs(I) ions from aqueous solutions onto molybdenum vanadate@bentonite (MoV@bentonite) composite. MoV@bentonite has been fabricated using the precipitation method and was characterized by different analytical tools including, FT-IR, XRD, and SEM attached with an EDX unit. The sorption studies applied on Cs(I) ions include the effect of contact time, pH, initial metal concentrations, ionic strength, desorption, and recycling. The experimental results revealed that in the adsorption process carried out after equilibrium time (300 min), saturation capacity has a value of 26.72 mg·g^-1 and the sorption of Cs(I) ions is dependent on pH values and ionic strength. Sorption kinetic better fit with the pseudo-second-order model; sorption isotherms apply to Langmuir, Freundlich, and Dubinin-Radushkevich (D-R) isotherm models. Data of thermodynamic parameters indicate that sorption is spontaneous and endothermic. Recycling experiments show that MoV@bentonite could be used for 7 cycles and the best eluant for the recovery of Cs(I) ions is 0.1 M HCl (76.9%). All the obtained data clarify that MoV@bentonite is considered a promising sorbent for the sorption of Cs(I) ions from aqueous solutions.

ROS generation and p-38 activation contribute to montmorillonite-induced corneal toxicity in vitro and in vivo

BACKGROUND

Montmorillonite (Mt) and its derivatives are now widely used in industrial and biomedical fields. Therefore, safety assessments of these materials are critical to protect human health after exposure; however, studies on the ocular toxicity of Mt are lacking. In particular, varying physicochemical characteristics of Mt may greatly alter their toxicological potential. To explore the effects of such characteristics on the eyes, five types of Mt were investigated in vitro and in vivo for the first time, and their underlying mechanisms studied.

RESULTS

The different types of Mt caused cytotoxicity in human HCEC-B4G12 corneal cells based on analyses of ATP content, lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) leakage, cell morphology, and the distribution of Mt in cells. Among the five Mt types, Na-Mt exhibited the highest cytotoxicity. Notably, Na-Mt and chitosan-modified acidic Na-Mt (C-H-Na-Mt) induced ocular toxicity in vivo, as demonstrated by increases corneal injury area and the number of apoptotic cells. Na-Mt and C-H-Na-Mt also induced reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation in vitro and in vivo, as indicated by 2',7'-dichlorofluorescin diacetate and dihydroethidium staining. In addition, Na-Mt activated the mitogen-activated protein kinase signaling pathway. The pretreatment of HCEC-B4G12 cells with N-acetylcysteine, an ROS scavenger, attenuated the Na-Mt-induced cytotoxicity and suppressed p38 activation, while inhibiting p38 activation with a p38-specific inhibitor decreased Na-Mt-induced cytotoxicity.

CONCLUSIONS

The results indicate that Mt induces corneal toxicity in vitro and in vivo. The physicochemical properties of Mt greatly affect its toxicological potential. Furthermore, ROS generation and p38 activation contribute at least in part to Na-Mt-induced toxicity.

Bioremediation potential of hexavalent chromium-resistant Arthrobacter globiformis 151B: study of the uptake of cesium and other alkali ions

Cesium (Cs⁺) enters environments largely because of global release into the environment from weapons testing and accidents such as Fukushima Daiichi and Chernobyl nuclear waste. Even at low concentrations, Cs⁺ is highly toxic to ecological receptors because of its physicochemical similarity to macronutrient potassium (K⁺). We investigated the uptake and accumulation of Cs⁺ by Arthrobacter globiformis strain 151B in reference to three similar alkali metal cations rubidium (Rb⁺), sodium (Na⁺), and potassium (K⁺). The impact of hexavalent chromium (Cr⁺⁶) as a co-contaminant was also evaluated. A. globiformis 151B accumulated Cs⁺ and Cr⁶⁺ in a time-dependent fashion. In contrast, the uptake and accumulation of Rb⁺ did not exhibit any trends. An exposure to Cs⁺, Rb⁺, and Cr⁺⁶ triggered a drastic increase in K⁺ and Na⁺ uptake by the bacterial cells. That was followed by the efflux of K⁺ and Na⁺, suggesting a Cs⁺ "substitution." Two-dimensional gel-electrophoresis of bacterial cell proteomes with the following mass-spectrometry of differentially expressed bands revealed that incubation of bacterial cells with Cs⁺ induced changes in the expression of proteins involved in the maintenance of cellular homeostasis and reactive oxygen species removal. The ability of A. globiformis 151B to mediate the uptake and accumulation of cesium and hexavalent chromium suggests that it possesses wide-range bioremediation potential.

Simultaneous removal of Zn2+ and p-nitrophenol from wastewater using nanocomposites of montmorillonite with alkyl-ammonium and complexant

Three types of alkyl-ammonium with different branching chains and three complexants with different functional groups were used to prepare alkyl-ammonium or complexant intercalated montmorillonite nanocomposite (A-Mt or C-Mt). In addition, synergistic intercalated montmorillonite nanocomposites (A/C-Mt) with alkyl-ammonium along with complexant were also prepared. The adsorption performance of the various nanocomposites toward Zn²⁺ and p-nitrophenol (PNP) from simulated binary wastewater containing both Zn²⁺ and PNP were systematically investigated. Characterization of Mt nanocomposites showed that both alkyl-ammoniums and complexants were successfully intercalated into the interlayers of Mt. The surfactant loading amounts of the various nanocomposites were also determined and correlated with the resulting expansion of the interlayer spacing. It was found that intercalation of alkane (OTAC) and -SH (CSH) were conducive to the adsorption of Zn²⁺ while -C₂H₄NH (TETA) and all alkyl-ammoniums were beneficial for PNP adsorption. The extent of adsorption was found to be controlled primarily by pH, i.e., the higher pH had a good effect on the adsorption of both Zn²⁺ and PNP. The adsorption process of Zn²⁺ onto Mt nanocomposites was more in line with the Freundlich model (R² = 0.99), while the Langmuir model described the adsorption of PNP well (R² = 0.99). The adsorption kinetics could be well described by the Elovich equation (R² = 0.98) and the double-constant model (R² = 0.89). Chemical adsorption was determined to be the dominant process between the contaminant and Mt nanocomposite surfaces.

Novel One-Pot Solvothermal Synthesis of High-Performance Copper Hexacyanoferrate for Cs+ Removal from Wastewater

Efficient removal of radioactive cesium from complex wastewater is a challenge. Unlike traditional precipitation and hydrothermal synthesis, a novel vast specific surface area adsorbent of copper hexacyanoferrates named EA-CuHCF was synthesized using a one-pot solvothermal method under the moderate ethanol media characterized by XRD, SEM, EDS, BET, and FTIR. It was found that the maximum adsorption capacity towards Cs+ was 452.5 mg/g, which is far higher than most of the reported Prussian blue analogues so far. Moreover, EA-CuHCF could effectively adsorb Cs+ at a wide pH range and low concentration of Cs+ in geothermal water within 30 minutes, and the removal rate of Cs+ was 92.1%. Finally, the separation factors between Cs+ and other competitive ions were higher than 553, and the distribution coefficient of Cs+ reached up to 2.343 × 104 mL/g. These properties suggest that EA-CuHCF synthesized by the solvothermal method has high capacity and selectivity and can be used as a candidate for Cs+ removal from wastewater.

Highly selective enrichment of radioactive cesium from solution by using zinc hexacyanoferrate(III)-functionalized magnetic bentonite

Realizing highly effective and selective enrichment of radioactive Cs(I) in complex environmental systems and exploring the microscale adsorption mechanism of Cs(I) on adsorbing material is the key point for developing highly efficient materials for Cs(I) adsorption. In addition, the low cytotoxicity of materials is essential for practical applications and environmental protection. In this study, the controlled assembly of bentonite carrier with a highly selective substance of Cs(I) is prepared by in-situ synthesis method in order to construct a low-toxic functional clay material with high adsorption capacity and selectivity of Cs(I) in complex environmental systems. The efficiency of the zinc hexacyanoferrate(III)-grafted magnetic bentonite (denoted as ZHF/MB) composite was evaluated in adsorption isotherm studies, kinetics analyses, and selectivity tests by using the batch technique. The toxicity of the ZHF/MB composite was evaluated through in vitro cytotoxicity assays using human hepatic cells (HepG2 cells). The results revealed that the ZHF/MB composite had not only a higher adsorption capacity (1.638 mmol/g, 60 °C) for Cs⁺ ions than a number of other natural and manmade materials but also no cytotoxicity in human cells. In addition, the ZHF/MB composite showed excellent selectivity for Cs⁺ with a removal efficiency of over 90% from solution (m/V = 0.4 g/L, [Mⁿ⁺]_initial = 10 mg/L, Mⁿ⁺= Cs⁺, Ni²⁺,Sr²⁺, Co²⁺). The promising safe toxicology profile, remarkable Cs⁺ adsorption efficiency, and excellent selectivity of the ZHF/MB composite demonstrate its great potential for using as a decorporation agent for radioactive cesium remediation. The implementation of this research will provide new adsorption materials and method for radioactive Cs(I) waste management.

Highly ordered macroporous silica dioxide framework embedded with supramolecular as robust recognition agent for removal of cesium

Owning to highly mechanical strength and non-interference effectivity, silica dioxide is often explored as a stable supporter commonly with mesopore. It is known that a macroporous framework has larger mass transfer channel, possibly beneficial to adsorption process. Herein highly ordered macroporous silica dioxide framework (homogeneous pore size of 194.20 nm) was synthesized and embedded with supramolecular (CC/OMS). Cs cation adsorption onto CC/OMS was explored under different pH (presence or absence of humic acid), initial cesium concentration, shaking time, competing ions. The robust cesium uptake capacity demonstrated by a theory adsorption amount of 150.01 mg/g highlighted unique CC/OMS properties combining large mass transfer channel and superior complex capacity of supramolecular. The adsorption was well fit with Langmuir and pseudo-second-order model. Sodium and potassium at a lower concentration showed little influence on cesium adsorption. The results demonstrated that CC/OMS was an alternative material for cesium capture from acidic aqueous solution.

Facile Synthesis of Porous Polymer Using Biomass Polyphenol Source for Highly Efficient Separation of Cs+ from Aqueous Solution

In this work, a series of polyphenol porous polymers were derived from biomass polyphenols via a facile azo-coupling method. The structure and morphologies of the polymer were characterized by BET, TEM, SEM, XRD, TGA and FT-IR techniques. Batch experiments demonstrated their potentialities for adsorptive separation of Cs⁺ from aqueous solution. Among them, porous polymers prepared with gallic acid as starting material (GAPP) could adsorb Cs⁺ at wide pH value range effectively, and the optimal adsorption capacity was up to 163.6 mg/g, placing it at top material for Cs⁺ adsorption. GAPP exhibited significantly high adsorption performance toward Cs⁺ compared to Na⁺ and K⁺, making it possible in selective removal of Cs⁺ from ground water in presence of co-existing competitive ions. Moreover, the Cs-laden GAPP could be facilely eluted and reused in consecutive adsorption-desorption processes. As a result, we hope this work could provide ideas about the potential utilization of biomass polyphenol in environmental remediation.

Towards the Extraction of Radioactive Cesium-137 from Water via Graphene/CNT and Nanostructured Prussian Blue Hybrid Nanocomposites: A Review

Cesium is a radioactive fission product generated in nuclear power plants and is disposed of as liquid waste. The recent catastrophe at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant in Japan has increased the 137Cs and 134Cs concentrations in air, soil and water to lethal levels. 137Cs has a half-life of 30.4 years, while the half-life of 134Cs is around two years, therefore the formers' detrimental effects linger for a longer period. In addition, cesium is easily transported through water bodies making water contamination an urgent issue to address. Presently, efficient water remediation methods towards the extraction of 137Cs are being studied. Prussian blue (PB) and its analogs have shown very high efficiencies in the capture of 137Cs+ ions. In addition, combining them with magnetic nanoparticles such as Fe3O4 allows their recovery via magnetic extraction once exhausted. Graphene and carbon nanotubes (CNT) are the new generation carbon allotropes that possess high specific surface areas. Moreover, the possibility to functionalize them with organic or inorganic materials opens new avenues in water treatment. The combination of PB-CNT/Graphene has shown enhanced 137Cs+ extraction and their possible applications as membranes can be envisaged. This review will survey these nanocomposites, their efficiency in 137Cs+ extraction, their possible toxicity, and prospects in large-scale water remediation and succinctly survey other new developments in 137Cs+ extraction.

Hybrid porous magnetic bentonite-chitosan beads for selective removal of radioactive cesium in water

Easy-to-obtain magnetic bentonite-chitosan hybrid beads (Bn-CTS) were prepared by immobilizing bentonite within a porous structure of chitosan beads to achieve a hybrid adsorption effect for the removal of cesium ion (Cs⁺) from water. The hybrid adsorbent, which had a porous structure and abundant binding sites contributed by both chitosan and bentonite, ensured superb adsorption characteristics. The paramagnetic character of the beads enabled their facile separation for recycling. The chitosan/bentonite ratio, pH and contact time were optimized to achieve the optimal Cs⁺ efficiency, and the adsorption kinetics and isotherms were thoroughly discussed. The adsorption kinetics obeyed the pseudo-second-order model, and the best fitted equation for equilibrium data was the Langmuir isotherm model. The maximum adsorption capacity of the bentonite-chitosan beads was 57.1 mg g^-1. The adsorbent had excellent selectivity towards Cs⁺ adsorption in the presence of abundant cations (Li⁺, Na⁺, K⁺ and Mg²⁺). The adsorbent was able to be recycled by treating the beads with 0.1 mol L^-1 of MgCl₂ to quantitatively desorb Cs⁺ from the beads. Overall, the magnetic bentonite-chitosan beads can be used as a highly efficient adsorbent for radioactive waste disposal and management.

Porous composite CMC–KCuFC–PEG spheres for efficient cesium removal from wastewater

Highly stable porous composite CMC–KCuFC–PEG was used for Cs⁺ recovery from wastewater, and showed excellent adsorption performance.

Uptake of 137Cs and 85Sr onto thermally treated forms of bentonite

This study focuses on the structural changes of bentonite upon thermal treatment at various temperatures, i.e. 150, 300 and 600, and their effect on the sorption behaviour for ¹³⁷Cs and ⁸⁵Sr. Thermal treatment caused gradual disappearance of the major peak of montmorillonite (at 15.15 Å) and minimization of calcite as observed by powder x-ray diffraction, in addition thermal gravimetric analysis indicated the occurrence of dehydration and dehydroxylation of the materials upon heating. Sorption experiments were carried out by batch-method and data were expressed in terms of distribution coefficients (K_d). Contact time, solution-solid ratio and radionuclide activity concentration were investigated in order to determine the optimal conditions and speculate the mechanism of the uptake. Sorption data revealed that the heated forms had lower selectivity for ¹³⁷Cs than the original bentonite, while B-150 and B-300 were the best sorbents when ¹³⁷Cs presents in salt media. In either case, ion exchange process of ¹³⁷Cs with the crystal lattice cations (i.e. Ca²⁺ and Mg²⁺) was the governing mechanism. Contrarily, bentonite heated forms are recommended sorbents for ⁸⁵Sr, especially B-600. The outperformance of thermally treated bentonites reflected chemical bonding reaction with the surface OH groups as well as precipitation of Sr(OH)₂.

Removal of Cs+ from aqueous solutions by perlite

Perlite is an abundant mineral that requires minimum processing before use either as raw or expanded perlite, resulting in a low-cost, natural porous material. The application of materials for the removal of radioactive cesium from liquid effluents and contaminated waters is currently of great interest. Perlite has been evaluated in the last years for the sorption of a variety of metals, but it had not been investigated before for removal of Cs⁺ from contaminated waters. The present work examines the use of perlites from a deposit in Salta, Argentina, for removal of Cs⁺ from aqueous solutions. The mineral was characterized by means of powder X-ray diffraction, thermal analysis, analysis of specific area, and scanning electron microscopy. The effect of solution pH, presence of concomitant ions, contact time, Cs⁺ initial concentration, perlite dose, and basic or acidic treatment of the sorbent were studied by batch experiments. Removal increased at high pHs and after treatment with NaOH. Sorption of Cs⁺ by perlite presented a rapid rise in the first 80 min of contact. The selected material (from Pava mine) yielded removal efficiencies of 84 and 89% before and after treatment with NaOH, respectively, for a dose of 30 g perlite/L and initial cation concentration of 10 mg/L. Our results demonstrate that perlite is a material capable of removing Cs⁺ from aqueous solutions, even when applied at low doses. These findings are relevant in the context of removal of radioactive Cs isotopes from nuclear effluents and in case of contamination of environmental waters.

Behavior of radioactive cesium during incineration of radioactively contaminated wastes from decontamination activities in Fukushima

Large volumes of decontamination wastes (DW) generated by off-site decontamination activities in Fukushima Prefecture have been incinerated since 2015. The behavior of radioactive cesium during incineration of DW was investigated at a working incineration plant. The incineration discharged bottom ash (BA) and fly ash (FA) with similar levels of radiocesium, and the leachability of the radiocesium from both types of ash was very low (<1%). These results are significantly different from those obtained for the incineration of contaminated municipal solid waste (CMSW) reported in earlier studies. The source of radiocesium in DW-FA is chiefly small particles derived from DW and DW-BA blown into the flue gas, not the deposition of gaseous synthesized radiocesium compounds on the surfaces of ash particles in the flue gas as observed in CMSW incineration. This source difference causes the behavior of radiocesium during waste incineration to differ between DW and CMSW.

Highly effective Cs+ removal by turbidity-free potassium copper hexacyanoferrate-immobilized magnetic hydrogels

Potassium copper hexacyanoferrate-immobilized magnetic hydrogel (MHPVA) has been synthesized via a facile freeze/thaw crosslinking method. The citric acid coated Fe₃O₄ is embedded into the hydrogel matrix to facilitate the dispersion of nano-sized KCuHCF particles for Cs⁺ removal, followed by the rapid recovery of the composite in a magnetic field. The Cs⁺ adsorption behavior of the MHPVA is fitted well with the Langmuir isotherm and the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. The MHPVA exhibits both high Cs⁺ adsorption capacity (82.8mg/g) and distribution coefficient (K_d) of 1.18×10⁶mL/g (8.3ppm Cs⁺, V/m=1000mL/g). Sorption of above 90% Cs⁺ to the MHPVA is achieved in less than 3h of contact time. Moreover, the MHPVA reveals stable and high Cs⁺ removal efficiency across a wide pH range from 4 to 10. In terms of Cs⁺ selectivity, the MHPVA shows above 96% removal efficiency in the presence of 0.01M competing cations such as Mg²⁺, Ca²⁺, Na⁺, and K⁺ with 1ppm of Cs⁺. From a practical perspective, the MHPVA still exhibits stable and promising selective properties even in groundwater and seawater conditions and after 5days of contact time the used adsorbent is rapidly recovered leaving a turbidity-free aqueous environment.

Facile preparation of water-soluble hyperbranched polyamine functionalized multiwalled carbon nanotubes for high-efficiency organic dye removal from aqueous solution

Water-soluble hyperbranched polyamine functionalized multiwalled carbon nanotubes nanocomposite (WHPA-OMCNT) was successfully prepared and applied to water remediation in this paper. WHPA-OMCNT was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), zeta potential, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscope (TEM) analyses. WHPA-OMCNT exhibited excellent adsorption performance for removal of organic dyes e.g., methylene blue (MB), malachite green (MG) and methyl violet (MV). The equilibrium adsorption capacity was 800.0 mg g^-1 for MB, 840.3 mg g^-1 for MG and 970.9 mg g^-1 for MV under the optimal conditions. The pseudo-second order equation and the Langmuir model exhibited good correlation with the adsorption kinetic and isotherm data for all three pollutants, respectively. The thermodynamic results (ΔG < 0, ΔH < 0, ΔS < 0) implied that the adsorption process of MB, MG and MV was feasible, exothermic and spontaneous in nature. A possible adsorption mechanism has been proposed, where H-bonding, electrostatic attraction and π-π stacking interactions dominated the adsorption of the organic dyes. In addition, the excellent reproducibility endowed WHPA-OMCNT with the potential for application in water treatment.

Removal of Cs+ from water and soil by ammonium-pillared montmorillonite/Fe3O4 composite

To remove cesium ions from water and soil, a novel adsorbent was synthesized by following a one-step co-precipitation method and using non-toxic raw materials. By combining ammonium-pillared montmorillonite (MMT) and magnetic nanoparticles (Fe₃O₄), an MMT/Fe₃O₄ composite was prepared and characterized. The adsorbent exhibited high selectivity of Cs⁺ and could be rapidly separated from the mixed solution under an external magnetic field. Above all, the adsorbent had high removal efficiency in cesium-contaminated samples (water and soil) and also showed good recycling performance, indicating that the MMT/Fe₃O₄ composite could be widely applied to the remediation of cesium-contaminated environments. It was observed that the pH, solid/liquid ratio and initial concentration affected adsorption capacity. In the presence of coexisting ions, the adsorption capacity decreased in the order of Ca²⁺>Mg²⁺>K⁺>Na⁺, which is consistent with our theoretical prediction. The adsorption behavior of this new adsorbent could be expressed by the pseudo-second-order model and Freundlich isotherm. In addition, the adsorption mechanism of Cs⁺ was NH₄⁺ ion exchange and surface hydroxyl group coordination, with the former being more predominant.
