Occurrence and removal technologies of perchlorate in water: A systematic review and bibliometric analysis

The pollution resulting from the emergence of the contaminant perchlorate is anticipated to have a substantial effect on the water environment in the foreseeable future. Considerable research efforts have been devoted to investigating treatment technologies for addressing perchlorate contamination, garnering widespread international interest in recent decades. A systematic review was conducted utilizing the Web of Science, Scopus, and Science Direct databases to identify pertinent articles published from 2000 to 2024. A total of 551 articles were chosen for in-depth examination utilizing VOS viewer. Bibliometric analysis indicated that countries such as China, the United States, Chile, India, Japan, and Korea have been prominent contributors to the research on this topic. The order of ClO4- occurrence was as follows: surface water > groundwater > drinking water. Various remediation methods for perchlorate contamination, such as adsorption, ion-exchange, membrane filtration, chemical reduction, and biological reduction, have been suggested. Furthermore, the research critically evaluated the strengths and weaknesses of each approach and offered recommendations for addressing their limitations. Advanced technologies have shown the potential to achieve notably enhanced removal of perchlorate and co-contaminants from water sources. However, the low concentration of perchlorate in natural water sources and the high energy consumption related to these technologies need to be solved in order to effectively remove perchlorate from water.

Polyextremophile engineering: a review of organisms that push the limits of life

Nature exhibits an enormous diversity of organisms that thrive in extreme environments. From snow algae that reproduce at sub-zero temperatures to radiotrophic fungi that thrive in nuclear radiation at Chernobyl, extreme organisms raise many questions about the limits of life. Is there any environment where life could not "find a way"? Although many individual extremophilic organisms have been identified and studied, there remain outstanding questions about the limits of life and the extent to which extreme properties can be enhanced, combined or transferred to new organisms. In this review, we compile the current knowledge on the bioengineering of extremophile microbes. We summarize what is known about the basic mechanisms of extreme adaptations, compile synthetic biology's efforts to engineer extremophile organisms beyond what is found in nature, and highlight which adaptations can be combined. The basic science of extremophiles can be applied to engineered organisms tailored to specific biomanufacturing needs, such as growth in high temperatures or in the presence of unusual solvents.

Microorganism-mediated bioremediation of dyes from contaminated soil: Mechanisms, recent advances, and future perspectives

Many methods have been proposed for the remediation of dye-contaminated soils, a widespread form of environment pollution. Bioremediation, it is hoped, can combine ecological benefits with efficiency of dye decontamination. We review the types and sources of dye contaminants; their possible effects on plant, animal, and human health; and emerging strategies for microbial bioremediation. Challenges, limitations, recommendations for future research, and prospects for large-scale commercialization of microbial bioremediation are discussed.

A review of perchlorate contamination: Analysis and remediation strategies

Perchlorate has been categorised as a potential contaminant and researched for years, but there are still many unknowns regarding this anion's contamination impacts. In this review, the basic information about perchlorate is summarised and evaluated, including the physical-chemical properties, fate and transportation, toxicity, analysis, and remediation. Especially, recent advances on analysis and remediation are emphasised and evaluated, such as in-situ imaging analysis and on-site bio-remediation respectively. The high solubility and persistence of the perchlorate anion mean its contamination is different from others, particularly in terms of analysis and remediation that might lead to secondary contamination. The knowledge gaps are listed for future research.

Constructing the active surface soil layer with ZVI-biochar amendment for simultaneous immobilization of As and Zn in both contaminated soil and groundwater: Continuous versus intermittent infiltration mode

In this study, the zero valent iron-biochar composite (ZVI-BC) was applied to construct an active surface soil layer for the simultaneous remediation of As-Zn contaminated soil and groundwater, focusing on the influence of the infiltration mode of pumped-up groundwater into soil. The active surface soil treated more contaminated groundwater for As (4.45-5.46 L kg^-1 soil) than that for Zn (2.52-3.13 L kg^-1 soil) under both continuous and intermittent infiltration modes, with about 98% As and 95% Zn removed from groundwater and retained in the soil. As(V) precipitated with Fe(III) due to ZVI oxidation, which was responsible for the As immobilization. The soil under the intermittent infiltration mode was enriched by the Sphingomonas with arsenate reductase gene, which promoted more reduction of As(V) into As(III) and facilitated coprecipitation of As(III) with Fe(III). The Mn oxide determined the sorption of Zn in the active soil layer, where the Hyphomicrobium, one type of manganese oxidizing bacteria, was much higher under the continuous infiltration mode, which accounted for the more Zn immobilization. After the remediation, both As and Zn immobilized in the active surface soil showed high stability, with the average downward migration rate of only 0.207-0.368 cm year^-1 within 20-year rainfall exposure. Our findings indicate that this active surface soil layer is applicable for simultaneous immobilization of As and Zn in both contaminated soil and groundwater, and the groundwater intermittent infiltration could be a better option considering the remediation effectiveness, the immobilization mechanism, the long-term stability, and the energetic efficiency.

Impacts of co-contaminants and dilution on perchlorate biodegradation using various carbon sources

This research investigates the biodegradation of perchlorate in the presence of the co-contaminants nitrate and chlorate using soluble and slow-release carbon sources. In addition, the impact of bio-augmentation and dilution, which results in lower total dissolved salts (TDS) and contaminant levels, is examined. Laboratory microcosms were conducted using actual groundwater and soils from a contaminated aquifer. The results revealed that both soluble and slow-release carbon sources support biodegradation of contaminants in the sequence nitrate > chlorate > perchlorate. Degradation rates, including and excluding lag times, revealed that the overall impact of the presence of co-contaminants depends on degradation kinetics and the relative concentrations of the contaminants. When the lag time caused by the presence of the co-contaminants is considered, the degradation rates for chlorate and perchlorate were two to three times slower. The results also show that dilution causes lower initial contaminant concentrations, and consequently, slower degradation rates, which is not desirable. On the other hand, the dilution resulting from the injection of amendments to support remediation promotes desirably lower salinity levels. However, the salinity associated with the presence of sulfate does not inhibit biodegradation. The naturally occurring bacteria were able to support the degradation of all contaminants. Bio-augmentation was effective only in diluted microcosms. Proteobacteria and Firmicutes were the dominant phyla identified in the microcosms.

Effects of Perchlorate and Other Groundwater Inorganic Co-Contaminants on Aerobic RDX Degradation

Hexahydro-1,3,5-trinitro-1,3,5-triazine (RDX) pollution is accompanied by other co-contaminants, such as perchlorate and chlorates, which can retard biodegradation. The effects of perchlorate and chlorate on aerobic RDX degradation remain unclear. We hypothesized that they have a negative or no impact on aerobic RDX-degrading bacteria. We used three aerobic RDX-degrading strains—Rhodococcus strains YH1 and T7 and Gordonia YY1—to examine this hypothesis. The strains were exposed to perchlorate, chlorate, and nitrate as single components or in a mixture. Their growth, degradation activity, and gene expression were monitored. Strain-specific responses to the co-contaminants were observed: enhanced growth of strain YH1 and inhibition of strain T7. Vmax and Km of cytochrome P450 (XplA) in the presence of the co-contaminants were not significantly different from the control, suggesting no direct influence on cytochrome P450. Surprisingly, xplA expression increased fourfold in cultures pre-grown on RDX and, after washing, transferred to a medium containing only perchlorate. This culture did not grow, but xplA was translated and active, albeit at lower levels than in the control. We explained this observation as being due to nitrogen limitation in the culture and not due to perchlorate induction. Our results suggest that the aerobic strain YH1 is effective for aerobic remediation of RDX in groundwater.

Monitoring contamination of perchlorate migrating along the food chain to dairy products poses risks to human health

Assessments of human exposure to sodium perchlorate via dairy sources are limited. The current study applied untargeted metabolomics (LOD, 1.08-35.60 μg L^-1; LOQ, 2.54-90.58 μg L^-1; RSD < 6.2%) and proteomics methods by UHPLC-Q-Orbitrap HRMS to investigate the metabolic pathways and nutritional quality of goat milk contaminated with sodium perchlorate. Specifically, 11 metabolites including lactose (from 2.01 to 0.58 mg L^-1), adenosine 5'-monophosphate (from 1.23 to 0.45 mg L^-1), hypoxanthine (from 0.63 to 0.08 mg L^-1), etc. and 3 crucial enzymes include α-lactalbumin, xanthine dehydrogenase and creatine kinase related to the quality traits of goat milk after sodium perchlorate treatment. Overall, except for spermidine, other related metabolites significantly decreased with the increase of sodium perchlorate concentration 0-160 μg L^-1 and storage time (4-12 h). Collectively, we provide previously uncharacterized goat milk nutritional quality degradation mechanism induced by sodium perchlorate and a reference to ensure its safe use in human health.

Perchlorate in shellfish from South China Sea and implications for human exposure

Shellfish can absorb and accumulate contaminants. The consumption of shellfish could expose humans to pollutants and increase related health risk. Perchlorate (ClO₄^-) is a ubiquitous pollutant and could affect thyroid functions, especially for children and pregnant women. However, knowledge on the contamination of perchlorate in aquatic food such as shellfish remains limited. This study aimed to investigate the abundances of perchlorate in shellfish from South China Sea and to assess human exposure risks. A total of 178 shellfish samples from eight species were collected from offshore aquaculture waters in South China Sea. Perchlorate was detected in 99.4% of them, suggesting widespread pollution in coastal waters. Concentrations of perchlorate ranged from not detected (N.D.) to 71.5 μg kg^-1, with a median value of 4.33 μg kg^-1. Estimated daily intake (EDI) and hazard quotient (HQ) were used to assess human exposure dose and health risks, respectively. The HQ values were determined to be less than 1, indicating no significant health risks to local residents via shellfish consumption. To our knowledge, this is the first study to investigate perchlorate contamination in South China shellfish and assess potential human risks.

Inhibition of perchlorate biodegradation by ferric and ferrous iron

Previous observations from in-situ biological treatments in the subsurface of a perchlorate-contaminated site revealed multiple reduction processes occurring parallel to perchlorate degradation. Iron reduction was accelerated and correlated with a decline in the efficiency of the in-situ perchlorate reduction. In the current study, we examined the influence of iron forms on perchlorate reduction. A series of kinetic laboratory experiments were conducted, using an indigenous mixed perchlorate-reducing culture, enriched from the polluted soil that was undergoing bioremediation. The results show that ferrous iron was a non-competitive inhibitor with a 41% decrease in µ_max for perchlorate reduction. Moreover, chlorate was accumulated in all samples treated with ferrous iron, indicating a disruption to the chlorate reduction step. Ferric iron, however, had less impact on perchlorate degradation with non-competitive inhibition reaching a 23% decrease in µ_max. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) revealed that the presence of ferrous iron in the perchlorate degradation enrichment culture initiated cell encrustation. We propose that during perchlorate reduction and the emission of oxygen from chlorite dismutation, the chemical oxidation of ferrous iron occurred near the bacteria's surface where the enzyme is located, forming an oxidized iron crust layer that can directly affect the perchlorate reduction enzymatic system.

Application of iron-biochar composite in topsoil for simultaneous remediation of chromium-contaminated soil and groundwater: Immobilization mechanism and long-term stability

This study was aimed to prove the effectiveness and practicability of an integrated technology for simultaneous remediation of Cr-contaminated soil and groundwater. The remediation system was built by pumping Cr-contaminated groundwater into top contaminated soil round after round, enabling the pre-applied iron-biochar composite (Fe-BC) in topsoil to stabilize Cr from both groundwater and soil. Immobilization ability and mechanism of Cr in soil were explored by toxicity characteristic leaching procedure test, scanning electron microscopy-elemental mapping, and X-ray photo spectroscopy. Hydrus-1D software was used to examine the long-term stability of immobilized Cr in soil. Results showed that Fe-BC-amended soil could remove about 71% Cr from contaminated groundwater. Meanwhile, Cr from both groundwater and soil was simultaneously immobilized in topsoil, leachability of Cr in which was reduced by over 81%. The immobilization of Cr in soil was attributed to the reduction of Cr(VI) into Cr(III) to form stable Cr_xFe_(1-x)(OH)₃. After remediation, the average transport rate of Cr in the soil profile was only 0.420 cm y^-1 along with the local rainfall. Our study demonstrated that integrated technology could effectively remove Cr from groundwater and stabilize Cr in soil and the simultaneous remediation target for both soil and groundwater reached.

Remediation of contaminated soil and groundwater using chemical reduction and solidification/stabilization method: a case study

This study presents a systematic on-site remediation case involving both heavy metal and organic contaminants in soil and groundwater in a historically industrial-used site in Shanghai, China. Lab-scale experiments and field tests were conducted to determine the optimum parameters for the removal of contaminants in soil and groundwater. It has been found that the remediation goal of hexavalent chromium in soil could be achieved with the mass content of added sodium hydrosulfite and ferrous sulfate reaching 3% + 6%. The total chromium in the groundwater was effectively removed, when the mass ratio of sodium metabisulfite was not less than 3 g/L, and the added quick lime made pH value not less than 9. The concentrations of arsenic and 1,2-dichloropropane in the groundwater decreased evidently after extraction and mixing of groundwater. The pH and calcium chloride dosage added should be larger than 9.5 and 5 g/L, respectively, to remove phosphate in groundwater. The removal efficiency of those contaminants was examined and evaluated after the on-site remediation. The results demonstrated that it was feasible to use the chemical reduction and solidification/stabilization methods for the on-site ex situ remediation of this site, which could be referenced for the realistic remediation of similar sites.

Hazardous wastes treatment technologies

A review of the literature published in 2019 on topics related to hazardous waste management in water, soils, sediments, and air. The review covered treatment technologies applying physical, chemical, and biological principles for the remediation of contaminated water, soils, sediments, and air. PRACTICAL POINTS: This report provides a review of technologies for the management of waters, wastewaters, air, sediments, and soils contaminated by various hazardous chemicals including inorganic (e.g., oxyanions, salts, and heavy metals), organic (e.g., halogenated, pharmaceuticals and personal care products, pesticides, and persistent organic chemicals) in three scientific areas of physical, chemical, and biological methods. Physical methods for the management of hazardous wastes including general adsorption, sand filtration, coagulation/flocculation, electrodialysis, electrokinetics, electro-sorption ( capacitive deionization, CDI), membrane (RO, NF, MF), photocatalysis, photoelectrochemical oxidation, sonochemical, non-thermal plasma, supercritical fluid, electrochemical oxidation, and electrochemical reduction processes were reviewed. Chemical methods including ozone-based, hydrogen peroxide-based, potassium permanganate processes, and Fenton and Fenton-like process were reviewed. Biological methods such as aerobic, anoxic, anaerobic, bioreactors, constructed wetlands, soil bioremediation and biofilter processes for the management of hazardous wastes, in mode of consortium and pure culture were reviewed. Case histories were reviewed in four areas including contaminated sediments, contaminated soils, mixed industrial solid wastes and radioactive wastes.

A novel ex-situ bio-remediation process for perchlorate contaminated soil

A novel, ex-situ remediation process for perchlorate contaminated soil is reported in this study. This approach comprises washing the contaminated soil with water, followed by treatment of the wash water in a bioreactor. The treated water reused for the next batch of soil, and the cycle continued. The pilot-scale treatment unit comprising of a soil washing unit (0.75 m3) and a fixed-film bioreactor (140 L), both connected in series for continuous operation for a period of three months. The bioreactor was inoculated with a novel perchlorate reducing microbial consortium comprising Serratia marcescens (Gen bank no. HM751096), Bacillus pumilus (Gen bank no. JQ820452) and Micrococcus sp. (Gen bank no. KJ410671). The microbial activity was supported by glucose (glucose/perchlorate ratio = 5), and trace mineral solution. In a typical washing cycle, 2.5 g perchlorate (KClO4) spiked in 670 kg soil was completely removed in three washing cycles, that completed in 6.3 h consuming ∼360 L water. The pooled wash water containing perchlorate at 8.5 mg/L was treated completely in the bioreactor operated at 4.5 h HRT and -200 mV ORP. Compared with both in-situ and ex-situ remediation methods reported, the present approach has many advantages for treating perchlorate contaminated soil.
