Atrazine is a widely used herbicide in agriculture, and it has garnered significant attention because of its potential risks to the environment and human health. The extensive utilization of atrazine, alongside its persistence in water and soil, underscores the critical need to develop safe and efficient removal strategies. This comprehensive review aims to spotlight atrazine's potential impact on ecosystems and public health, particularly its enduring presence in soil, water, and plants. As a known toxic endocrine disruptor, atrazine poses environmental and health risks. The review navigates through innovative removal techniques across soil and water environments, elucidating microbial degradation, phytoremediation, and advanced methodologies such as electrokinetic-assisted phytoremediation (EKPR) and photocatalysis. The review notably emphasizes the complex process of atrazine degradation and ongoing scientific efforts to address this, recognizing its potential risks to both the environment and human health.

Construction and regulation of high active sites in montmorillonite composite catalyst for the removal of ofloxacin via persulfate activation

In this study, ionic liquids (ILs) were used as organic modifiers by introducing montmorillonite nanolayers containing potential C and N active sites between the montmorillonite nanolayers. Organically modified montmorillonite (ILs-Mt-p) was further prepared by high-temperature pyrolysis under N2 and used for the removal of ofloxacin (OFL) by activated peroxymonosulfate (PMS). Combined with XPS and other characterization analyses, it was found that the catalyst materials prepared from different organic modifiers had similar surface functional groups and graphitized structures, but contained differences in the types and numbers of C and N active sites. The catalyst (3CPC-Mt-p) obtained after pyrolysis of montmorillonite modified with cetylpyridinium chloride (CPC) had optimal catalytic performance, in which graphitic C, graphitic N, and carbonyl group (C[bond, double bond]O) could synergistically promote the activation of PMS by electron transfer, and 77.3 % of OFL could be removed within 60 min. The effects of OFL concentration, initial pH, and anions on the effects of OFL removal by the 3CPC-Mt-p/PMS system were further investigated. Satisfactory degradation results were obtained over a wide pH range. Cl- promoted the system to degrade OFL, while the presence of SO42-, H2PO4- and HA showed some inhibition, but overall the 3CPC-Mt-p catalysts had a strong anti-interference ability, showing good application prospects. The quenching experiments and EPR tests showed that O2-- and 1O2 in the 3CPC-Mt-p/PMS system were the main reactive oxygen species for the degradation of OFL, and •OH was also involved in the reaction. This study provides ideas for the construction and modulation of active sites in mineral materials such as montmorillonite and broadens the application of montmorillonite composite catalysts in advanced oxidation processes for the treatment of antibiotic wastewater.

Photoreduction of atrazine from aqueous solution using sulfite/iodide/UV process, degradation, kinetics and by-products pathway

Due to its widespread use in agriculture, atrazine has entered aquatic environments and thus poses potential risks to public health. Therefore, researchers have done many studies to remove it. Advanced reduction process (ARP) is an emerging technology for degrading organic contaminants from aqueous solutions. This study was aimed at evaluating the degradation of atrazine via sulfite/iodide/UV process. The best performance (96% of atrazine degradation) was observed in the neutral pH at 60 min of reaction time, with atrazine concentration of 10 mg/L and concentration of sulfite and iodide of 1 mM. The kinetic study revealed that the removal of atrazine was matched with the pseudo-first-order model. Results have shown that reduction induced by e aq - and direct photolysis dominated the degradation of atrazine. The presence of anions (Cl - , CO 3 2 - and SO 4 2 - ) did not have a significant effect on the degradation efficiency. In optimal conditions, COD and TOC removal efficiency were obtained at 32% and 4%, respectively. Atrazine degradation intermediates were generated by de-chlorination, hydroxylation, de-alkylation, and oxidation reactions. Overall, this research illustrated that Sulfite/iodide/UV process could be a promising approach for atrazine removal and similar contaminants from aqueous solutions.

Efficient rhodamine B dye degradation by red mud-grapefruit peel biochar catalysts activated persulfate in water

The continuous and rapid development of textile industry intensifies rhodamine B dye (RhB) wastewater pollution. Meanwhile, massive red mud (RM) solid waste generated by the industrial alumina production process poses detrimental effects to the environment after leaching. For resource utilization and to reduce the expansion of RhB pollution, RM and peel red mud-biochar composite (RMBC) catalyst were synthesized in activating peroxydisulfate (PDS) for RhB degradation. Firstly, characterization results showed that compared to RM, RMBC had a higher content of catalytically active metals (Fe, Al, Ti) (higher than 0.92-4.18%), smaller pore size, and larger specific surface area (10 times), which verified RMBC had more potential catalytic oxidation activity. Secondly, under optimal dosage (catalyst, PDS), pH 4.6, and 20 mg L-1 RhB, it was found that the RhB degradation ratio of RM was 76.70%, which was reduced to 41% after three cycles, while that of RMBC was 89.98% and 67%, respectively. The results indicated that the performance of RMBC was significantly superior to that of RM. Furthermore, the quenching experiments, electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy tests, FTIR, and XPS analysis showed the function of O-H, C=O, C-O, Fe-O, and Fe-OH functional groups, which converted the PDS to the active state and hydrolyzed it to produce free radicals ([Formula: see text], 1O2, [Formula: see text]) for RhB degradation. And, Q Exactive Plus MS test obtained that RhB was degraded to CO2, H2O, and intermediate products. This study aimed to raise a new insight to the resource utilization of RM and the control of dye pollution.

Identifying the Role of Surface Hydroxyl on FeOCl in Bridging Electron Transfer toward Efficient Persulfate Activation

FeOCl is a highly effective candidate material for advanced oxidation process (AOP) catalysts, but there remain enormous uncertainties about the essence of its outstanding activity. Herein, we clearly elucidate the mechanism involved in the FeOCl-catalyzed perdisulfate (PDS) activation, and the role of surface hydroxyls in bridging the electron transfer between Fe sites and PDS onto the FeOCl/H2O interface is highlighted. ATR-FTIR and Raman analyses reveal that phosphate could suppress the activity of FeOCl via substituting its surface hydroxyls, demonstrating the essential role of hydroxyl in PDS activation. By the use of X-ray absorption fine structure and density functional theory calculations, we found that the polar surface of FeOCl experienced prominent hydrolyzation, which enriched abundant electrons within the microarea around the Fe site, leading to a stronger attraction between FeOCl and PDS. As a result, PDS adsorption onto the FeOCl/H2O interface was obviously enhanced, the bond length of O-O in adsorbed PDS was lengthened, and the electron transfer from Fe atoms to O-O was also promoted. This work proposed a new strategy for PDS-based AOP development and a hint of building efficient heterogeneous AOP catalysts via regulating the hydroxylation of active sites.

Composite carrier enhanced bacterial adhesion and nitrogen removal in partial nitrification/anammox process

The rapid start-up and stable operation of one-stage (Partial nitrification/anammox) PN/A process for low-ammonium wastewater are difficult to be achieved, and many carriers are designed to solve this problem. Here, a composite carrier was developed, in which sepiolite and non-woven fabrics were assembled in polypropylene spherical shells. At the start-up phase, P_A reactor using the composite carriers reached a higher nitrogen removal rate of 134.50 ± 19.60 mg·N·L^-1d^-1, in contrast to that of 48.85 ± 19.64 mg·N·L^-1d^-1 in the P_B reactor without sepiolite carriers. When the final influent ammonium concentration of PN/A process is 100 mg/L, the total nitrogen removal efficiency can reach 72 ± 0.03 %. High biomass immobilization ability of composite carrier was evidenced by the greater adsorption trend between sludge and sepiolite than that between sludge and non-woven fabrics, where hydrophobic interaction and Van der Waals interaction played a major role. Extracellular protein (PN) content and the ratio of PN and extracellular polysaccharide of samples in P_A were significantly higher than those in P_B, verifying higher biofilm formation ability on the composite carrier. The composite carrier also increased the abundance of dominant bacteria in PN/A process, especially AOB, the relative abundance of which reached 46.11 %. And it increased the abundance of essential functional genes for nitrogen conversion as their perfect acid neutralizing effects. This study is of great significance in improving the start-up speed and stable operation of this process.

Novel magnetic graphoxide/biochar composite derived from tea for multiple SAs and QNs antibiotics removal in water

Antibiotics pollution is an urgent public health issue. Biochar is a kind of promising composite for removal antibiotic in aqueous environment. In this study, a novel magnetic graphoxide/biochar composite (mGO/TBC) was synthesized by simple impregnation method and used as an efficient and recyclable persulfate (PS) activator for degradation and removal of sulfonamides (SAs) and quinolones (QNs) antibiotics. Based on the synergism pre-adsorption and degradation between graphoxide and biochar, the removal rates of mGO/TBC on sarafloxacin hydrochloride, sulfadimethoxine, sulfapyridine, sulfadoxine, sulfamonomethoxine, sulfachloropyridazine, enrofloxacin, and ciprofloxacin were increased above 95%. Moreover, the mGO/TBC could be reused at least seven times after degradation-recovery cycles. Quenching experiment and ESR analysis proved that ¹O₂, ^•OH, and SO₄^•- from mGO/TBC/PS system were the primary oxidation active species to degrade SAs and QNs. It is a promising substrate for antibiotic bioremediation with good application prospects.

A Comparison Study between Wood Flour and Its Derived Biochar for the Enhancement of the Peroxydisulfate Activation Capability of Fe3O4

In this study, both wood flour (WF) and wood flour-derived biochar (WFB) were used as supports for Fe3O4 to activate peroxydisulfate (PDS). The role of different carriers was investigated emphatically from the aspects of catalyst properties, the degradation kinetics of bisphenol A (BPA), the effects of important parameters, and the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). Results showed that both WF and WFB could serve as good support for Fe3O4, which could control the release of iron into solution and increase the specific surface areas (SSAs). The WFB/Fe3O4 had stronger PDS activation capability than WF/Fe3O4 mainly due to the larger SSA of WFB/Fe3O4 and the PDS activation ability of WFB. Both radical species (•OH and SO4•−) and non-radical pathways, including 1O2 and high-valent iron-oxo species, contributed to the degradation of BPA in the WFB/Fe3O4–PDS process. Moreover, the WFB/Fe3O4 catalyst also showed stronger ability to control the iron release, better reusability, and higher BPA mineralization efficiency than WF/Fe3O4.

Real-Time Monitoring of the Atrazine Degradation by Liquid Chromatography and High-Resolution Mass Spectrometry: Effect of Fenton Process and Ultrasound Treatment

High resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS) was coupled with ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography (uHPLC) to monitor atrazine (ATZ) degradation process of Fenton/ultrasound (US) treatment in real time. Samples were automatically taken through a peristaltic pump, and then analysed by HPLC-HRMS. The injection in the mass spectrometer was performed every 4 min for 2 h. ATZ and its degradation metabolites were sampled and identified. Online Fenton experiments in different equivalents of Fenton reagents, online US experiments with/without Fe²⁺ and offline Fenton experiments were conducted. Higher equivalents of Fenton reagents promoted the degradation rate of ATZ and the generation of the late-products such as Ammeline (AM). Besides, adding Fe²⁺ accelerated ATZ degradation in US treatment. In offline Fenton, the degradation rate of ATZ was higher than that of online Fenton, suggesting the offline samples were still reacting in the vial. The online analysis precisely controls the effect of reagents over time through automatic sampling and rapid detection, which greatly improves the measurement accuracy. The experimental set up proposed here both prevents the degradation of potentially unstable metabolites and provides a good way to track each metabolite.

Activation of peroxymonosulfate by modified coagulation sludge for bisphenol A degradation

This study used coagulation sludge from a landfill leachate treatment to prepare a modified coagulation sludge (MCS) catalyst by the limited oxygen pyrolysis method, and the adsorption, degradation efficiency, and reaction mechanism of bisphenol A (BPA) in the MCS activated peroxymonosulfate (MCS/PMS) process were investigated. The pyrolysis temperature determined the adsorption capacity and the activation ability of MCS. At a pyrolysis temperature of 300 °C for 2 h, the MCS300-2 test material had the best adsorption capacity for BPA, while MCS450-2 prepared at a pyrolysis temperature of 450 °C for 2 h had a better catalytic performance towards PMS. In the MCS/PMS process, BPA (20 mg/L) could be completely degraded at 120 min under room temperature when the initial pH = 7, PMS dosage = 3 g/L, and MCS dosage = 0.3 g/L. Radical quenching experiments indicated that both hydroxyl radical (·OH) and sulfate radical (SO₄^-·) existed in the MCS/PMS process, and ·OH played a major role in BPA degradation. The changes in morphology, functional groups, components, and surface element valence state of MCS catalysts before and after the reaction were investigated. It was found that the BPA degradation reaction was a coupled adsorption and oxidation process, in which homogenous in situ and heterogeneous effects were included in the reactions. In addition, the stability of the MCS/PMS process was verified in different environmental scenarios, including ultrapure water, tap water, and municipal wastewater. Furthermore, the degradation intermediates (such as p-hydroxyl phenol and p-hydroxybenzoic acid) of BPA were determined by ultra-performance liquid chromatography-quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry, and the reaction mechanisms in the MCS/PMS process were investigated.

Removal of triclosan from water by sepiolite supported bimetallic Fe/Ni nanoparticles

A simple and low-cost route to fabricate sepiolite-supported bimetallic Fe/Ni (Sep-Fe/Ni) nanoparticles was obtained by synchronous liquid phase reduction method. The as prepared composite was used to remove triclosan (TCS) from aqueous solutions. X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) analysis were used for characterization of the materials. As the supporting material, Sep dispersed Fe/Ni nanoparticles on its surface effectively and reduced the agglomeration phenomenon, providing more reactive sites. Sep-Fe/Ni had a large surface area of 90.5 m²/g, which was considerably higher than that of Fe/Ni (9.2 m²/g). Sep-Fe/Ni exhibited an enhanced TCS removal efficiency, as compared to the Fe/Ni and Sep materials. Operation factors, including the solution pH, initial TCS concentration, and material dosage, were investigated and found to be influential for TCS removal. The kinetic analysis indicated that the depletion of TCS in aqueous solutions conformed to the pseudo-first-order kinetic model under optimized conditions. The transformation pathway of TCS was studied in detail, revealing that the dechlorination of TCS by Sep-Fe/Ni is a stepwise reaction, namely from TCS to di-chlorinated intermediates, with the newly formed intermediate products also degrading into mono-chlorinated products by further reductive dechlorination. This study demonstrated that Sep-Fe/Ni is a promising reductant for TCS removal in water.

Degradation of Residual Herbicide Atrazine in Agri-Food and Washing Water

Atrazine, an herbicide used to control grassy and broadleaf weed, has become an essential part of agricultural crop protection tools. It is widely sprayed on corn, sorghum and sugar cane, with the attendant problems of its residues in agri-food and washing water. If ingested into humans, this residual atrazine can cause reproductive harm, developmental toxicity and carcinogenicity. It is therefore important to find clean and economical degradation processes for atrazine. In recent years, many physical, chemical and biological methods have been proposed to remove atrazine from the aquatic environment. This review introduces the research works of atrazine degradation in aqueous solutions by method classification. These methods are then compared by their advantages, disadvantages, and different degradation pathways of atrazine. Moreover, the existing toxicological experimental data for atrazine and its metabolites are summarized. Finally, the review concludes with directions for future research and major challenges to be addressed.

A comprehensive review on persulfate activation treatment of wastewater

With increasingly serious environmental pollution and the production of various wastewater, water pollutants have posed a serious threat to human health and the ecological environment. The advanced oxidation process (AOP), represented by the persulfate (PS) oxidation process, has attracted increasing attention because of its economic, practical, safety and stability characteristics, opening up new ideas in the fields of wastewater treatment and environmental protection. However, PS does not easily react with organic pollutants and usually needs to be activated to produce oxidizing active substances such as sulfate radicals (SO₄^-) and hydroxyl radicals (OH) to degrade them. This paper summarizes the research progress of PS activation methods in the field of wastewater treatment, such as physical activation (e.g., thermal, ultrasonic, hydrodynamic cavitation, electromagnetic radiation activation and discharge plasma), chemical activation (e.g., alkaline, electrochemistry and catalyst) and the combination of the different methods, putting forward the advantages, disadvantages and influencing factors of various activation methods, discussing the possible activation mechanisms, and pointing out future development directions.

Performance of a Three-Dimensional Electrochemical Reactor (3DER) on Bisphenol A Degradation

This study constructed a three-dimensional electrochemical reactor (3DER) using meshed stainless steel sheets and titanic magnetite particles (TMP) to investigate bisphenol A (BPA) degradation through the synergistic action of electrical current and TMP. We examined some TMP characteristics, such as particle size, specific surface areas, X-ray diffraction, surface imaging, elemental constituents, and electrical resistivity. It was found that TMP was a micron-level material with excellent electrical conductivity, and it could be regarded as a magnetite-based material comprising Fe(II) and Fe(III). The single-factor experiment determined the optimal conditions for BPA removal in 3DER, specifically by introducing 200 ml of BPA-simulated wastewater (10 mg L⁻¹) into 3DER. At the initial pH of 9.00, current and electrodes gap of 300 mA and 15 mm, respectively, and adding 1 ml of 0.5 M potassium peroxymonosulfate and 1 g TMP, > 98% of BPA was removed after 55 min of electrochemical reaction. In addition, liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry identified the intermediates formed during the BPA treatment, showing two possible pathways for BPA degradation. The final degradation intermediates were chain organics with simple molecular structures. This research provided an understanding of the potential application of 3DER for BPA removal in water.

Effects of foreign metal doping on the step-by-step oxidation process in M-OMS-2 catalyzed activation of PMS

Various metal cations M (M = Mg²⁺, Ca²⁺, Zn²⁺, Cu²⁺, Fe³⁺) were doped into the tunnel of manganese octahedral molecular sieve (OMS-2). Redox-inactive metal (Ca, Mg and Zn) doped OMS-2 exhibited better peroxymonosulfate (PMS) catalytic activity than redox metal-doped Cu-OMS-2 and Fe-OMS-2. Redox-inactive metals doping improves the conductivity and reducibility of the catalyst, while transition metal doping reduces the dispersion of manganese. More importantly, the degradation of ACE can be divided into two stages. In the first stage, ACE was oxidized dominantly through mediated electron transfer process. Subsequently, singlet oxygen (¹O₂) gradually dominated oxidative degradation in the second stage, which was derived from the reaction between superoxide radical (O₂^•-) and metastable manganese intermediates. The long half-life of O₂^•- on the surface of OMS-2 ensured the delay generation of ¹O₂. This study not only provides a new idea for improving the efficiency of heterogeneous catalysts activation of PMS, but also meaningful for the in-depth study of multiple reaction mechanisms in PMS activation processes.

Environmentally Friendly g-C3N4/Sepiolite Fiber for Enhanced Degradation of Dye under Visible Light

Herein, novel visible light active graphitic carbon nitride (g-C₃N₄)/sepiolite fiber (CN/SS) composites were fabricated via a facile calcination route, exploiting melamine and thiourea as precursors, and sepiolite fiber as support, for efficient degradation of organic dye methylene blue (MB). The as-prepared CN/SS composites were characterized by various characterization techniques based on structural and microstructural analyses. The effects of CN loading amount, catalyst dosage and initial concentration of dye on the removal rate of dye under visible light were systematically studied. The removal rate of MB was as high as 99.5%, 99.6% and 99.6% over the composites when the CN loading amount, catalyst dosage and initial concentration of dye were 20% (mass percent), 0.1 g, and 15 mg/L in 120 min, respectively. The active species scavenging experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) measurement indicated that the holes (h⁺), hydroxyl radical (·OH) and superoxide radicals (·O₂⁻) were the main active species. This study provides for the design of low-cost, environmentally friendly and highly efficient catalysts for the removal of organic dye.

Clays as Vehicles for Drug Photostability

Clay minerals are often used due to their high adsorption capacity, which has sparked interest in their biological applications to stabilize drugs and pharmaceutical products. This research aims to summarize information about the stability of drugs, cosmetics, dermocosmetics, and pharmaceutical compounds incorporated in the structure of different clay minerals. The databases used to search the articles were Web of Science, Scopus, PubMed, and Science Direct. Photostabilization of these compounds is reviewed and its importance demonstrated. For biological applications, the increase in solubility and bioavailability of clay minerals has proven useful for them as drug carriers. While their natural abundance, low toxicity, and accessible cost have contributed to classical applications of clay minerals, a wide range of interesting new applications may be facilitated, mainly through incorporating different organic molecules. The search for new functional materials is promising to challenge research on clay minerals in biological or biotechnological approaches.

Recent Advances in Endocrine Disrupting Compounds Degradation through Metal Oxide-Based Nanomaterials

Endocrine Disrupting Compounds (EDCs) comprise a class of natural or synthetic molecules and groups of substances which are considered as emerging contaminants due to their toxicity and danger for the ecosystems, including human health. Nowadays, the presence of EDCs in water and wastewater has become a global problem, which is challenging the scientific community to address the development and application of effective strategies for their removal from the environment. Particularly, catalytic and photocatalytic degradation processes employing nanostructured materials based on metal oxides, mainly acting through the generation of reactive oxygen species, are widely explored to eradicate EDCs from water. In this review, we report the recent advances described by the major publications in recent years and focused on the degradation processes of several classes of EDCs, such as plastic components and additives, agricultural chemicals, pharmaceuticals, and personal care products, which were realized by using novel metal oxide-based nanomaterials. A variety of doped, hybrid, composite and heterostructured semiconductors were reported, whose performances are influenced by their chemical, structural as well as morphological features. Along with photocatalysis, alternative heterogeneous advanced oxidation processes are in development, and their combination may be a promising way toward industrial scale application.

Efficient removal of organic pollutants by a Co/N/S-doped yolk-shell carbon catalyst via peroxymonosulfate activation

Carbon-based catalysts with heteroatom doping and hollow structures are desired for advanced oxidation processes (AOPs). Herein, dual-shelled Co, N, and S codoped hollow carbon nanocages were developed by wrapping zeolitic imidazolate framework-67 (ZIF-67) with trithiocyanuric acid (TCA) and performing subsequent carbonization. The optimal composite catalyst (Co-NC-CoS) exhibited excellent catalytic performance toward different organic pollutants. Almost complete removal of 4-NP (60 mg/L^-1) was achieved within 20 min by 10 mg of catalyst and 0.2 g/L^-1 peroxymonosulfate (PMS). Moreover, the catalyst showed good stability and reusability. The effects of catalyst and PMS dose, pollutant concentration, pH and common anions were investigated, and reactive oxygen species (ROS) were studied by scavenger experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) tests. The results show that multidoped atoms S, Co and N all contributed to the degradation system. Several lines of evidence suggested that S could change the catalytic process from Co³⁺/Co²⁺ to Co³⁺/Co²⁺/Co⁰ reduction due to its low redox potential. Degradation was achieved through both radical and nonradical pathways, where sulfate radicals (SO₄^·̶), hydroxyl radicals (^·OH) and singlet oxygen (¹O₂) were primary reactive species. Overall, this work may suggest that the novel multi heteroatom-doped catalysts with complex structures can be developed for environmental remediation.

Pyrene contaminated soil remediation using microwave/magnetite activated persulfate oxidation

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are important mutagen prevalent in the contaminated sites, bringing potential risks to human health. Iron oxides are important natural components in soils. Pyrene removal in soil using persulfate (PS) oxidation activated by microwave (MW) and magnetite (Fe₃O₄) was investigated. Fe₃O₄ significantly promoted pyrene removal in the soil; 91.7 % of pyrene was degraded within 45 min treatment. Pyrene removal rate in the Fe₃O₄/MW/PS system was 5.18 and 3.00 times higher than that in the Fe₃O₄/PS and MW/PS systems. Increasing in Fe₃O₄ dosage, PS concentration, MW temperature, and soil moisture content in the selected range were conducive for pyrene degradation. SO₄^•-, ^•OH, O₂^•-, and ¹O₂ were responsible for pyrene degradation, and the conversion of Fe (Ⅱ) in the Fe₃O₄ to Fe (Ⅲ) contributed to the formation of O₂^•- and ¹O₂. Characteristic bands of pyrene were more obviously destroyed by the Fe₃O₄/MW/PS oxidation, in comparison with MW/PS oxidation. Ring hydroxylation and ring-opening reactions were the main degradation pathways of pyrene. The toxicities of the formed byproducts were significantly reduced after treatment. This study provided a promising option for pyrene contaminated soil remediation.

A Facile Fabrication of ZnFe2O4/Sepiolite Composite with Excellent Photocatalytic Performance on the Removal of Tetracycline Hydrochloride

The excellent photo-response of ZnFe2O4 in the visible light region makes it a promising catalyst, whereas some defects like serious particle agglomeration and easy recombination of photo-generated electron-hole pairs hinder its application. In this work, the ZnFe2O4/sepiolite (ZF-Sep) composites were synthesized using a co-precipitation method. The obtained ZF-Sep composites were characterized by XRD, SEM, TEM, FT-IR, XPS, BET, VSM and DRS. Moreover, the photocatalytic performance was evaluated by the tetracycline hydrochloride removal efficiency under simulated visible light illumination. The results displayed that the ZnFe2O4 with average sizes about 20 nm were highly dispersed on sepiolite nanofibers. All the composites exhibited better photocatalytic performance than pure ZnFe2O4 due to the synergistic effect of the improvement on the agglomeration phenomenon of ZnFe2O4 and the reduction on the recombination rate of photo-generated electrons and holes. The optimum removal efficiency was that of the ZF-Sep-11 composite, which reached 93.6% within 3 h. Besides, the composite exhibited an excellent stability and reusability. Therefore, ZF-Sep composite is a promising catalyst for the treatment of wastewater contained antibiotics.

Aquaculture drug degradation in persulfate by PANI-based microparticles controlled via ultrasonic field: Forced motion of "burning hot micromotors"

The triphenylmethane derivative malachite green (tpm_MaG) despite repeated prohibitions but is frequently detected in aquatic environment and draws emerging attention because of the potential poisonous effects. The polyaniline/persulfate with ultrasound catalysis (US/PANI-PS) was developed for tpm_MaG removal. The effects of 12 factors and the optimization by response surface methodology (RSM) for tpm_FG removal were evaluated based on the pseudo-first-kinetics (k_obs). From free radical inhibition, the ratios of active species in US/PANI-PS (δ₁₁ = 0.355, δ₁₂ = 0.593) were close to that in US-PS (δ₂₁ = 0.346, δ₂₂ = 0.586) and different to that in PANI-PS and PS systems. A possible degradation pathway (hydroxylation, N-demethylation, deamination, and open-benzene ring) was explored by gas chromatography-mass spectrometer (GC/MS) and high performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometer (HPLC-MS). The designed reactor involving the US-driven PANI was simulated by acoustic-piezoelectric interaction. From cavitation calculations, the estimated effective-mean temperature at bubble-water interface had little increasing (from 704 K to 711 K) after adding the PANI, however, the adsorption capacity of tpm_MaG in reactive zone decreased from 0.0891 μM to 0.0787 μM. The mechanism (PANI hot turbo-micromotors) with US/PANI-PS was proposed. The tpm_MaG was removed with a low treatment cost of 2.81 $⋅m^-3 (the EE/O value 18.29 kWh⋅m^-3) by US/PANI-PS, presenting a cost-effective treating process. The reusability tests and characterizations (contact angle, X-ray diffraction (XRD), and scanning electron microscope (SEM)) further confirmed the stability of PANI.

One-step synthesis of mixed valence FeOX nanoparticles supported on biomass activated carbon for degradation of bisphenol A by activating peroxydisulfate

A novel FeO_X nanoparticles supported biomass activated carbon (BAC/FeO_X) composite was prepared through one-pot calcination method with FeCl₃ and cherry stone powder as precursors. The carbonization of biomass, reduction of Fe³⁺, and FeO_X anchored on carbon substrate could be achieved at the same time. Characterization with transmission electron microscope (TEM) and scanning electron microscope indicated that nanoscale FeO_X distributed uniformly on carbon substrate, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and high resolution TEM characterization proved that the loaded FeO_X was high crystallinity of Fe₃O₄ and α-Fe⁰. Bisphenol A (BPA) was used to investigate the degradation performance of BAC/FeO_X activating peroxydisulfate (PDS). The ratio of raw materials affected degradation efficiency of BPA intensively through the content, valence state, and dispersibility of FeO_X nanoparticles, and the optimal material could degrade 20 mg/L BPA completely in 5 min at 0.1 g/L in the presence of 1 g/L PDS. Free radical determination and quenching experiments indicated that both SO₄^•- and •OH were involved in BPA degradation. The degradation pathway was proposed based on the identification of degradation intermediates. The facile synthesis method, high activation efficiency, and low-cost and environmental friendly raw materials made the BAC/FeO_X-50 an alternative catalyst for organic pollution water treatment.

Preparation and application of a novel biochar-supported red mud catalyst：Active sites and catalytic mechanism

A novel catalyst RM-BC_(HP) was synthesized by hydrothermal treatment and pyrolysis (800 ℃) using red mud and coconut shells. Influence of different preparation conditions on catalyst performance was explored. SEM showed that RM-BC_(HP) was porous and RM was successfully loaded on the outside surface and inside the pores of BC. XRD revealed that Fe₂O₃ in RM was reduced to Fe⁰ and Fe₃O₄ in the pyrolysis process, in which pyrolysis temperature and addition ratio of coconut shells were critical. TGA-MS, FT-IR and XPS were also applied to character the catalyst. 100% of AO7 was removed within 30 min with conditions of 2 mM PS, 50 mg/L AO7 and 0.5 g/L RM-BC_(HP), and the Fe leaching was negligible. High removal rate was obtained in tap, river, and lake water. RM-BC_(HP)/PS system also exhibited excellent degradation performance for other dyes (MB, MG and RhB) and antibiotics (TC, OTC and CTC). The mechanism studies demonstrated that PS was mainly activated by Fe⁰ and Fe²⁺ in RM-BC_(HP) to produce different radicals, then ¹O₂ was generated by the reactions among these radicals to degrade AO7. Finally, nine intermediate products of AO7 were identified by FT-ICR-MS and a probable degradation pathway was proposed.

Fe3O4 nanoparticles three-dimensional electro-peroxydisulfate for improving tetracycline degradation

In this work, Fe₃O₄ nanoparticle employed as the three-dimensional electrode, were introduced into the electro-oxidation system with peroxydisulfate to improve the tetracycline (TC) degradation. The coprecipitation method prepared Fe₃O₄ was proved to be the irregular sphere-like form through the characterizations of XRD, SEM, N₂ adsorption isotherms, and XPS. By the contrast experiments, the EO-Fe₃O₄-PDS exhibited the outstanding TC degradation capability, which achieved 86.53% after 60 min treatment with current intensity of 20 mA cm^-2, Fe₃O₄ dose of 0.2 g L^-1, PDS amount of 2 mmol L^-1, initial pH 4.5, and TC concentration of 25 mg L^-1. Besides, the influence of current intensity, Fe₃O₄ dosage, PDS concentration, and beginning pH on the TC degradation was investigated systemically. The consecutive five recycles of Fe₃O₄ demonstrated that a favorable stability for the coupling process. The EO-Fe₃O₄-PDS could improve the PDS decomposition and H₂O₂ production. The sulfate and hydroxyl radicals both took charge of the antibiotic degradation as certified by scavenger test. The TC degradation evolution was presented based on the HPLC-MS analyses of degradation byproducts.

Recycling application of modified waste electrolytic manganese anode slag as efficient catalyst for PMS activation

Electrolytic manganese anode slag (EMAS) is the waste residue produced by electrolytic manganese metal industry. At present, no mature recycling system has been established, which causes a waste of resources and threatens the environment. Therefore, the resource utilization of EMAS has attracted increased attention. In this paper, the in-situ resource utilization of EMAS can be realized by pickling treatment was reported. Specifically, EMAS after pickling treatment (PEMAS) was first used as catalyst to activate PMS to degrade tetrachlorophenol (4-CP). Pickling could remove the inert inorganic components on EMAS and increase the specific surface area, pore volume and Mn distribution of the catalyst, thus improving the catalytic performance of the catalyst. Under the conditions of 4-CP of 40 ppm, PMS of 1 mM and PEMAS of 0.3 g L^-1, 85% of 4-CP could be degraded within 50 min. Mechanism studies proved that the main active species were O₂^- and ¹O₂. Some O₂^- contributed to the generation of ¹O₂ and some O₂^- directly contributed to the degradation of 4-CP. During the reaction, the valence state of Mn transformed between Mn(III)/Mn(IV) and Mn(II)/Mn(III) and kept the cycle. Moreover, PEMAS/PMS system exhibited excellent independence of the solution pH, resistance to the versatile inorganic ions and background organic matters, and stability of recycling. In a word, this study has achieved the resource utilization of EMAS and the goal of treating waste with waste, which is a win-win strategy of economic and environmental benefits.

FeS2 assisted degradation of atrazine by bentonite-supported nZVI coupling with hydrogen peroxide process in water: Performance and mechanism

In this study, bentonite-supported nZVI (B-nZVI) was used as a catalyst to activate H₂O₂ for atrazine (ATZ) degradation in the presence of FeS₂. Results indicated that ATZ degradation by B-nZVI/H₂O₂ process was significantly enhanced when FeS₂ was introduced, and nearly 98% of ATZ was degraded by B-nZVI/FeS₂/H₂O₂ process within 60 min under the optimum conditions. ATZ degradation of B-nZVI/FeS₂/H₂O₂ process was much higher than the sum of B-nZVI and FeS₂/H₂O₂ processes. The presence of HCO₃^-, PO₄^3- and F^- exhibited significant negative effects on the ATZ degradation, whereas both Cu²⁺ and Ni²⁺ exhibited positive effects on that. Both citric acid (CA) and ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) with lower concentration enhanced ATZ degradation rate, but significant suppression effects on that with higher concentration. The degradation of ATZ and 2,4-Dichlorophenol (2,4-DCP) could be simultaneously achieved in B-nZVI/FeS₂/H₂O₂ process under certain conditions. High soluble Fe²⁺ induced an excellent decomposition of H₂O₂ by B-nZVI and FeS₂. OH was dominant radical, and contributed to nearly 86% of the overall ATZ removal. A total of five intermediate products of ATZ were identified, and ATZ degradation was achieved via de-alkylation and hydroxylation processes. An enhanced reaction mechanism for ATZ degradation by B-nZVI/FeS₂/H₂O₂ process was proposed, and B-nZVI/FeS₂/H₂O₂ process exhibited an excellect catalytic performance within four successive runs.

One-step fabrication of oxygen vacancy-enriched Fe@Ti/C composite for highly efficient degradation of organic pollutants through persulfate activation

In this work, cost-effective, magnetic carbon-supported Fe@Ti composite (Fe@Ti/Cs) with abundant active sites was synthesized by one-step carbothermal reduction of ilmenite with the assistance of microwave oven and utilized as a highly efficient persulfate (PS) activator for the wastewater purification. The coexistence of Fe^0/2+/3+, Ti^3+/4+ and oxygen vacancies on Fe@Ti/Cs was found to favor for the electron transfer to PS, which facilitate the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). Catalytic experiment results showed that the Fe@Ti/C-4 produced from ilmenite/carbon with a mass ratio of 4:1 exhibited the best catalytic activation performance towards PS for the degradation of Rhodamine B (RhB). Usage of merely 0.12 g/L Fe@Ti/C-4 enabled the removal of 94.01% RhB (200 mg/L) within 30 min in the PS containing system, significantly outperforming ilmenite + PS (29.29%) and carbon + PS (49.91%) systems tested under the same conditions. The physico-chemical properties of the produced Fe@Ti/Cs before and after the reaction were carefully characterized. Radical scavenging experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) analysis were carried out to better understand the underlying mechanism. The results indicate that oxygen vacancies in Fe@Ti/C-4 promoted the electron transfer and participated in the transition metal redox cycle to generate ROS in the PS-containing system, which was highly efficient for degrading RhB into small molecules and finally enabling mineralization. This work offers a new perspective for designing highly efficient and stable PS activators with long life derived from natural ore for environmental remediation.

Integrated remediation for organic-contaminated site by forcing running-water to modify alkali-heat/persulfate via oxidation process transfer

As organic pollution of soil and groundwater increases, the effective and economical remediation of contaminated sites has drawn growing attention. In this study, running-water (RW) was designed to modify alkali-heat/persulfate (MAH/PS) for integrated remediation of an actual organic-contaminated site. The degradation efficiency mainly reached 60%-99% for Benz[a]anthracene, Benzo[a]pyrene and total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPHs). MAH/PS was more effective in degrading Benzene and 1,2-Dichloroethane with simple molecular configurations. The pollutant degradation efficiencies decreased with increasing site depth and increased with increasing pollutant concentrations. Migration with RW enhanced site remediation. By monitoring the groundwater after remediation, it was found that residual TPHs presented anomalous diffusion; SO₄^2- ranged from 8.00 to 237.00 mg L^-1 to 8.00-290.00 mg L^-1 and pH presented alkalescence (7.00-8.20). Mathematical models were established to describe the reaction process including the solubility equilibrium of calcium hydroxide, temperature equilibrium, and reaction kinetics. Moreover, MAH/PS provided a cost-saving approach for site remediation.

Production, properties, and catalytic applications of sludge derived biochar for environmental remediation

Environment-friendly and cost-effective disposal and reutilization of sludge wastes are essential in wastewater treatment processes (WWTPs). Converting activated sludge into biochar via thermochemical treatment is a promising technology for waste management in WWTPs. This review summarizes the compositions of sludge, the dewatering methods, and the thermochemical methods whichinfluence the structures, chemistry, and catalytic performances of the derived biochar. Moreover, the physiochemical characteristics and chemical stability of sludge biochar are discussed. Catalytic applications of biochar are highlighted, including the reaction mechanisms and feasibility for catalytic removal of organic contaminants. High-temperature carbonized sludge biochar exhibits excellent performance for persulfate activation in advanced oxidation processes due to the graphitic carbon structure, newly-created active sites, and fine-tuned metal species. Therefore, the sludge biochar can be produced via cost-effective and eco-friendly approaches to immobilize harmful components from sludge and remediate organic pollution in wastewater, offering a sustainable route toward sludge reutilization into value-added products for water purification.

The effect of hybrid zinc oxide/graphene oxide (ZnO/GO) nano-catalysts on the photocatalytic degradation of simazine

The photocatalytic degradation of simazine (SIM) was investigated using zinc oxide/graphene oxide (ZnO/GO) composite materials under visible light irradiation. The reaction kinetics was studied to optimize the reaction parameters for efficient degradation of SIM. Batch studies were performed to investigate the effects of initial reaction pH, the loading of the ZnO onto GO, and mass of catalyst on the removal of SIM from aqueous solution. A pH of 2 was determined to be the optimal reaction pH for the different ZnO-loaded GO catalysts. In addition, a mass of 40 mg of catalyst in the reaction was observed to be the most effective for the catalysts synthesized using 20 and 30 mmol of Zn²⁺ ions; whereas a mass of 10 mg was most effective for the ZnO/GO composite material synthesized using 10 mmol Zn²⁺ ions. The reaction was observed to follow a second-order kinetics for the degradation process. Furthermore, the synthesized ZnO/GO composite catalysts resulted in higher reaction rates than those observed for pure ZnO. The 30 mmol ZnO/GO composite expressed a rate of SIM degradation ten times greater than the rate observed for pure ZnO, and sixty-two times greater than the rate of photolysis. In addition, the catalyst cycling exhibited a constant photocatalytic activity for the ZnO/GO composite over three reaction cycles without the need of a conditioning cycle.

Adsorption of As(V) and Ni(II) by Fe-Biochar composite fabricated by co-pyrolysis of orange peel and red mud

This study aimed to compare the adsorption performance of Fe-biochar composites (Fe-C-N₂ and Fe-C-CO₂), fabricated by co-pyrolysis of red mud and orange peel in N₂ and CO₂, for As(V) and Ni(II). By the syngas production comparison test, it was confirmed that CO₂ was more advantageous than N₂ as a pyrolytic medium gas to produce more CO. The resulting Fe-biochar composite showed the aggregate morphology consisting of different Fe phases (magnetite or metal Fe) from the inherent hematite phase in red mud and carbonized carbon matrix, and there was no distinct difference between the structural shapes of two Fe-biochar composites. Adsorption experiments showed that the adsorption capacities for As(V) and Ni(II) in single mode were almost similar with 7.5 and 16.2 mg g^-1 for Fe-C-N₂ and 5.6 and 15.1 mg g^-1 for Fe-C-CO₂, respectively. The adsorption ability of Fe-C-CO₂ for both As(V) and Ni(II) was further enhanced in binary adsorption mode (As(V): 13.4 mg g^-1, Ni(II):17.6 mg g^-1) through additional removal of those ions by Ni(II)-As(V) complexation. The overall results demonstrated CO₂-assisted pyrolysis can provide a viable platform to convert waste materials into fuel gases and environmental media for co-adsorption of cationic and anionic heavy metals.

Oxidative degradation of Orange G in aqueous solution by persulfate activated with pyrite

Orange G (OG), a typical azo dye in textile wastewaters, has been the subject of intense investigations. This study investigated oxidative degradation of OG in aqueous solution by persulfate (PS) activated with pyrite. A complete destruction of OG was achieved within 60 min in the pyrite/PS system. Lower solution pH, smaller pyrite particles and higher pyrite dosage was beneficial for OG degradation. Higher PS concentration was also in favour of OG degradation, but excess PS would decrease the removal efficiency of OG. The addition of HCO₃ ^- and H₂PO₄ ^- but Cl^- had inhibitory effects on the destruction of OG. The results of quenching experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance tests proved that SO₄ ^•- and •OH were the dominant reactive species responsible for OG degradation in the pyrite/PS system. The azo bond, naphthalene ring and benzene ring of OG were all destroyed by the generated reactive species. The mineralization rate of OG reached 34.4% after 60 min of reaction. This work will provide information for understanding azo dye degradation by pyrite activated PS.

Data for a new spinel catalyst to activate peroxymonosulfate for highly efficient degrading organic contaminants in water based on non-radical process

The aim of this research is to degrade organic contaminants in aqueous solution via lead ferrite (PbFe₂O₄) as a catalyst to activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS). PbFe₂O₄ was synthesized by a citrate combustion method and analyzed by SEM, TEM and XRD. A simulated solution including thionine were used, with different conditions tested to optimize the degradation process, including comparing PbFe₂O₄ to other catalysts, PbO and Fe₂O₃, and tracking active oxygen species. The concentrations of thionine and PMS were tracked with a UV-Vis spectrophotometer in the treatment process. The data are presented as graphs and tables. Comparative study of atrazine degradation by magnetic clay activated persulfate and H2O2

To effectively remove the endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) in water, Fe3O4 was loaded on the surface of modified sepiolite clay by the method of co-precipitation to catalyze potassium persulfate (K2S2O8) and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) respectively to generate SO4˙- and ·OH for atrazine (ATZ) removal. The magnetic clay catalyst was characterized by XRD, SEM, N2 adsorption-desorption and isoelectric point. The degradation efficiency of ATZ in the two systems was systematically compared in terms of initial pH, oxidant dosage and oxidant utilization rate. The results revealed that, after 90 minutes, systems with K2S2O8 and H2O2 can remove 65.7% and 57.8% of the ATZ under the given conditions (30 °C, catalyst load: 1 g L-1, initial pH: 5, [ATZ]0: 10 mg L-1, [H2O2]0: 46 mmol L-1, [PDS]0: 46 mmol L-1). The magnetic clay catalyst still maintained good catalytic activity and stability during the four consecutive runs. Based on the quenching experiments, it was demonstrated that the dominant radical species in the two systems were SO4˙-/·OH and ·OH, respectively. However, the degradation efficiency of the two systems presented different responses toward the condition variations; the system with K2S2O8 was relatively more sensitive to solution pH, the oxidant efficiency was generally higher than that of the H2O2 system (except 184 mmol L-1).

Development of a novel three-dimensional magnetic polymer aerogel as an efficient adsorbent for malachite green removal

A novel three-dimensional (3D) magnetic bacterial cellulose nanofiber/graphene oxide polymer aerogel (MBCNF/GOPA) composed of bacterial cellulose nanofibers (BCNFs), Fe₃O₄ nanoparticles, graphene oxide (GO) nano-sheets, and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) was developed by combining a facile filler-loaded networks method with a vacuum freeze-drying process for the removal of malachite green (MG) dye from aqueous solution. The influence of various factors on adsorption, including initial dye concentration, adsorbent dosage, contact time, temperature, and pH of dye solution, was then investigated. The adsorbent preserved a high adsorption capacity over a wide range of pH conditions. Moreover, the adsorption isotherms data fitted well with the Langmuir isotherm model with a maximum adsorption capacity of 270.27 mg g^-1. Adsorption kinetics followed the pseudo-second-order model, and the thermodynamic parameters showed that the adsorption of MG dye was feasible and endothermic in nature and occurred spontaneously. Therefore, owing to its demonstrated properties such as 3D interconnected porous structure, lightweight, large specific surface area, superparamagnetic behavior at room temperature, excellent adsorbent efficiency (93% removal) and also its simple and eco-friendly synthesis process, MBCNF/GOPA could be considered a promising candidate for removing cationic dye pollutants from aqueous solution, which can easily be collected from aqueous solution by a small magnet. MBCNF/GOPA also showed favorable reusability for MG removal in wastewater treatment, and its application in different water samples for the removal of MG dye molecules from "real" samples was successfully performed.

A Review on Recent Treatment Technology for Herbicide Atrazine in Contaminated Environment

Atrazine is a kind of triazine herbicide that is widely used for weed control due to its good weeding effect and low price. The study of atrazine removal from the environment is of great significance due to the stable structure, difficult degradation, long residence time in environment, and toxicity on the organism and human beings. Therefore, a number of processing technologies are developed and widely employed for atrazine degradation, such as adsorption, photochemical catalysis, biodegradation, etc. In this article, with our previous research work, the progresses of researches about the treatment technology of atrazine are systematically reviewed, which includes the four main aspects of physicochemical, chemical, biological, and material-microbial-integrated aspects. The advantages and disadvantages of various methods are summarized and the degradation mechanisms are also evaluated. Specially, recent advanced technologies, both plant-microbial remediation and the material-microbial-integrated method, have been highlighted on atrazine degradation. Among them, the plant-microbial remediation is based on the combined system of soil-plant-microbes, and the material-microbial-integrated method is based on the synergistic effect of materials and microorganisms. Additionally, future research needs to focus on the excellent removal effect and low environmental impact of functional materials, and the coordination processing of two or more technologies for atrazine removal is also highlighted.
