Abstract
In this study, the hierarchical porous materials for adsorbing mycotoxins were prepared by one-step carbonization-activation method using potassium permanganate (KMnO4) and chitin as activators and carbon source, respectively. The hierarchical porous materials had different specific surface area and pore distribution owing to different carbonization temperatures. In this paper, the effects of pH, time and temperature of adsorption as well as the concentration of patulin on the adsorption characteristics were systematically investigated. And we analyzed the adsorption properties and mechanism between hierarchical porous materials and patulin. The results showed that the adsorption process conformed to the pseudo-second-order kinetics and Langmuir model. HPC-600 (hierarchical porous chitin prepared in 600 °C) had the largest specific surface area (1047.8 m2·g-1) and the best adsorption performance with adsorption capacity above 9.2 μg/mg. The prepared hierarchical porous materials are expected to be applied to the patulin adsorption.

Abstract
Zearalenone contaminates food and poses a threat to human health. It is vital to develop cost-effective and environmentally-friendly adsorbents for its removal. By screening Sporobolomyces pararoseus (SZ4) and modified yam starch (adsorption capacity (qe) of 1.33 and 0.94 mg/g, respectively), this study prepared a novel composite aerogel adsorbent (P-YSA@SZ410). The compressive strength of P-YSA@SZ410 was 1.35-fold higher than unloaded yeast. It contained several functional groups and three-dimensional interconnected channels, achieving a 0° contact angle within 0.18 s, thereby demonstrating excellent water-absorbent properties. With a qe of 2.96 mg/g at 308 K, the adsorption process of P-YSA@SZ410 was spontaneous, endothermic, and matched pseudo-second-order and Langmuir models. The composite adsorbed zearalenone via electrostatic attraction and hydrogen bonding, maintaining a qe of 2.24 mg/g after five cycles. P-YSA@SZ410 was found to remove zearalenone effectively under various conditions and could be applied to corn silk tea, indicating its great potential as an adsorbent material.

Abstract
Patulin, a fungal secondary metabolite with multiple toxicities, is widely existed in a variety of fruits and their products. This not only causes significant economic losses to the agricultural and food industries but also poses a serious threat to human health. Conventional techniques mainly involved physical and chemical methods present several challenges include incomplete patulin degradation, high technical cost, and fruit quality decline. In comparison, removal of mycotoxin through biodegradation is regarded as a greener and safer strategy which has become popular research. Among them, yeast has a unique advantage in detoxification effect and application, which has attracted our attention. Therefore, this review provides a comprehensive account of the yeast species that can degrade patulin, degradation mechanism, current application status, and future challenges. Yeasts can efficiently convert patulin into nontoxic or low-toxic substances through biodegradation. Alternatively, it can use physical adsorption, which has the advantages of safety, high efficiency, and environmental friendliness. Nevertheless, due to the inherent complexity of the production environment, the sole utilization of yeast as a control agent remains inherently unstable and challenging to implement on a large scale in a practical manner. Integration control, enhancement of yeast resilience, improvement of yeast cell wall adsorption capacity, and research on additional patulin-degrading enzymes will facilitate the practical application of this approach. Furthermore, we analyzed the feasibility of the yeast commercial application in patulin reduction and provided suggestions on how to enhance its commercial value, which is of great significance for the control of mycotoxins in food products.

Abstract
In this study, we developed a hydrogel from cross-linked keratin and chitosan (KC) to remove patulin (PAT) from apple juice. We explored the potential of incorporating Lactobacillus rhamnoses into the KC hydrogel (KC-LR) and tested its effectiveness in removing PAT from simulated juice solutions and real apple juice. The KC hydrogel was developed through a dynamic disulfide cross-linking reaction. This cross-linked hydrogel network provided excellent stability for the probiotic cells, achieving 99.9 % immobilization efficiency. In simulated juice with 25 mg/L PAT, the KC and KC-LR hydrogels showed removal efficiencies of 85.2 % and 97.68 %, respectively, using 15 mg mL-1 of the prepared hydrogel at a temperature of 25 °C for 6 h. The KC and KC-LR hydrogels achieved 76.3 % and 83.6 % removal efficiencies in real apple juice systems, respectively. Notably, the encapsulated probiotics did not negatively impact the juice quality and demonstrated reusability for up to five cycles of the PAT removal process.

Abstract
Patulin (PAT) is a hazardous mycotoxin frequently occurs in fruit industry. A reusable g-C3N4-SH@KG composite aerogel for PAT removal in a novel "dark adsorption-light regeneration" mode was prepared by thiol(-SH) functionalization and konjac glucomannan (KG) immobilization. The g-C3N4-SH@KG was characterized by SEM, FT-IR, XPS and UV-Vis DRS, and its PAT adsorption and photocatalytic regeneration behaviors and mechanisms were investigated. The g-C3N4-SH@KG exhibited good regeneration performance, maintaining 83% of PAT initial adsorption capacity (0.92 mg/g) after 5 "adsorption-regeneration" cycles. The adsorption process was endothermic and spontaneous. •OH and h+ generated by photocatalysis were the main substances that degraded PAT into two products and regenerated -SH. The g-C3N4-SH@KG could effectively remove PAT without negative impact on juice quality. The study provided a new strategy for the regeneration of thiol-functionalized PAT adsorbents, and a new idea for the application of non-selective photocatalysis in the control of food contaminations.

Abstract
Ochratoxin A (OTA) contamination in grape juice has attracted widespread concern as OTA can lead to kidney disease and cause adverse neurological effects. An effective method to remove OTA is to make use of highly adsorbent materials that are able to remove the toxic contaminant. Recently, inactivated Lactobacillus plantarum-based biosorbents have shown to be an efficient, cost-effective and environmentally friendly bioremediation method in removing toxic pollutants such as OTA. We used five chemical thiol-modification methods to improve the adsorption efficiency of OTA in grape juice. The esterification of Lactobacillus plantarum (L-Es) significantly increased the sulfhydryl contents (-SH) by 251.33 μmol/g and >90% of OTA was removed. However, the inactivated microbial adsorbent was difficult to separate after adsorption and therefore, the prepared L-Es were embedded into the cellulose nanocrystals (L-Es@CNCs). Moreover, L-Es@CNCs significantly increased the adsorption rate of OTA in grape juice samples by 88.28% with negligible effects on juice quality due to the properties of easy re-use and excellent biodegradability. This showcases its potential application for OTA removal in the grape juice industry.

Abstract
There is an urgent need to develop sustainable, renewable, and environment-friendly adsorbents to rectify heavy metals from water. In the current study, a green hybrid aerogel was prepared by immobilizing yeast on chitin nanofibers in the presence of a chitosan interacting substrate. A cryo-freezing technique was employed to construct a 3D honeycomb architecture comprising the hybrid aerogel with excellent reversible compressibility and abundant water transportation pathways for the accelerated diffusion of Cadmium(II) (Cd(II)) solution. This 3D hybrid aerogel structure offered copious binding sites to accelerate the Cd(II) adsorption. Moreover, the addition of yeast biomass amplified the adsorption capacity and reversible wet compression of hybrid aerogel. The monolayer chemisorption mechanism explored by Langmuir and pseudo-second-order kinetic exhibited a maximum adsorption capacity of 127.5 mg/g. The hybrid aerogel demonstrated higher compatibility for Cd(II) ions as compared to the other coexisted ions in wastewater and manifested a better regeneration potential following four consecutive sorption-desorption cycles. Complexation, electrostatic attraction, ion-exchange and pore entrapment were perhaps major mechanisms involved in the removal of Cd(II) revealed by XPS and FT-IR. This study unveiled a novel avenue for efficient green-synthesized hybrid aerogel that may be sustainably used as an excellent purifying agent for Cd(II) removal from wastewater.

Abstract
Mycotoxins are toxic secondary metabolites produced by certain fungi, which can contaminate various food commodities, including fruits and their derived products. Patulin and Alternaria toxins are among the most commonly encountered mycotoxins in fruit and their derived products. In this review, the sources, toxicity, and regulations related to these mycotoxins, as well as their detection and mitigation strategies are widely discussed. Patulin is a mycotoxin produced mainly by the fungal genera Penicillium, Aspergillus, and Byssochlamys. Alternaria toxins, produced by fungi in the Alternaria genus, are another common group of mycotoxins found in fruits and fruit products. The most prevalent Alternaria toxins are alternariol (AOH) and alternariol monomethyl ether (AME). These mycotoxins are of concern due to their potential negative effects on human health. Ingesting fruits contaminated with these mycotoxins can cause acute and chronic health problems. Detection of patulin and Alternaria toxins in fruit and their derived products can be challenging due to their low concentrations and the complexity of the food matrices. Common analytical methods, good agricultural practices, and contamination monitoring of these mycotoxins are important for safe consumption of fruits and derived products. And Future research will continue to explore new methods for detecting and managing these mycotoxins, with the ultimate goal of ensuring the safety and quality of fruits and derived product supply.

Abstract
Patulin (PAT) is one of mycotoxins that usually contaminates apple juice, and it is not easily detoxified by cysteine (CYS) at room temperature due to the highly acidic conditions based on the Michael addition reaction. However, it could be effectively degraded by a heating treatment at 120 °C for 30 min in the presence of cysteine. In our study, a total of eight degradation products (DP A–H) were characterized and identified via liquid chromatography quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry (LC-Q-TOF-MS) in a negative ion mode, and their structures and formulas were proposed based on their accurate mass data. The fragmentation patterns of PAT and its degradation products were obtained from the MS/MS analysis. Meanwhile, the possible reaction mechanisms involved in the degradation of PAT were established and explained for the first time. According to the relation between the structure and toxicity of PAT, it could be deduced that the toxic effects of PAT degradation products were potentially much less than those of PAT-self.

Abstract
17β-estradiol (E2), as one of the pharmaceutical and personal care product, frequently contaminates environmental water as estrogen pollutant and possesses great risk to human survival as well as the sustainable development of the ecosystem. Herein, to achieve an effective adsorbent system for the selective removal of E2 from the environmental water, Fe3O4 nanoparticles are subjected to chemical etching to reduce the overall mass and then employed as carriers to prepare a novel type of lightweight daisy-like magnetic molecularly imprinted polymers (LD-MMIPs) adopting template immobilization strategy. The LD-MMIPs based etched magnetic nanoparticles not only exhibit light mass but also have plentiful imprinted sites in the etched channels, which significantly increases the adsorption capacity for E2. The daisy-like LD-MMIPs own strong magnetic responsiveness, well crystallinity, fast binding kinetics, high adsorption amount, and excellent selectivity. Moreover, combining with HPLC, the LD-MMIPs as adsorbents have been successfully used to specifically recognize and detect trace E2 in environmental water. Thus, the proposed LD-MMIPs with high adsorption capacity hold great potential in monitoring water pollution. Additionally, this work also provides an alternative strategy for improving the adsorption capacity of magnetic molecularly imprinted polymers through a convenient chemical etching technology.

Abstract
An innovative magnetic nanocomposite was designed and fabricated by the functionalization and support of magnetic Mn-ferrite nanoparticle (MnFe2O4) with layered double hydroxide (Zn-Al LDHs) on cellulose and activated grapes stalks-derived biochar (AGB) (MnFe2O4@Zn-Al LDHs@Cel@AGB), to incorporate active functionalities and fantastic features with the aim to explore its feasibility for removal of harmful cationic species as methylene blue dye (MB) and mercury ions from wastewater. Structural, composition, morphological, surface area, adsorption performance of the fabricated nanocomposite toward both MB and Hg(II) and reusability were also investigated. The results referred that 10 mg ofthe nanocomposite exhibited 97.4% and 84.0 % removal efficiency of 10mgL-1 MB dye and 0.1 mol L-1 Hg(II) at 25 and 30 min contact times, respectively. Adsorption isotherms and kinetics of the two pollutants (MB and Hg(II)) were both governed by the pseudo-second-order equation with possible participation of intraparticle diffusion mechanism.

Abstract
Patulin (PAT), a mycotoxin found mainly in matured apples, is produced by different species of fungi, mainly Penicillium expansum, and is found in various fruits and vegetables used to produce juice. Little focus has been placed on nano-technological methods for the mitigation of this problem. In this work, carbon-encapsulated nano-zero valent iron (CE-nZVI) particles were synthesized and used as heterogeneous Fenton agents for the degradation of PAT in apple juice. The particles were found to have a spherical shape with a diameter of 130 ± 50 nm. In a heterogeneous Fenton degradation (involving CE-nZVI) process, a concentration of 0.05 g/L CE-nZVI with 0.5 mM H2O2 was used. Since the Fenton oxidation process is pH-dependent, placebo degradation was observed at varying pH conditions with an average percentage of PAT degradation of 27.8%, 87.0%, 98.0%, and 99.75% at pH 6, 5, 4.5, and 3.5 respectively, between 1 min to 4 h in a water matrix. In a juice matrix, at the regular pH of juice (3.6), percentage PAT degradation of 72% and 89% was obtained after a 2-h treatment using heterogeneous Fenton oxidation (CE-nZVI/H2O2) systems, using 0.5 mM H2O2 and 1 mM H2O2, respectively.
