Abstract
Diabetic wounds, particularly diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs), are significant threats to human well-being due to their impaired healing from poor circulation and high blood sugar, increased risk of infection and potential for severe complications like amputation, all compounded by peripheral neuropathy and chronic inflammation. Most therapies and dressings for DFUs focus on one symptom at a time, however, multifunctional smart self-healing hydrogels can withstand multifactorial motional diabetic wounds. Motional wounds are easy-to-split wounds that experience tension, compression, and movement caused by stress now and then. Hyaluronic acid (HA) based self-healing hydrogels stand out among other biomaterials due to their ability to cover irregular wound surfaces, maintain a moist environment, repair themselves when ruptured, and exhibit excellent biocompatibility. These self-healing hydrogels can repair damages caused by movement and recover the functional properties during healing. These hydrogels can also act as therapeutic delivery vehicles and tissue regeneration systems. This review demonstrates the potential of HA-based self-healing hydrogels for diabetic wound healing. Due to its self-healing capabilities, these hydrogels offer a customized therapeutic approach for motional diabetic wounds. The review also critically examines the challenges and future directions for HA-based self-healing hydrogels in diabetic wound healing.

Abstract
In this work, Fe3+-doped and -NH2-grafted montmorillonite-based material was prepared and the adsorption ability for uranium(VI) was verified. The microstructure and pore size distribution of the montmorillonite-based material were investigated by N2 adsorption-desorption analyzer and scanning electron microscopy. The surface groups and composition were analyzed by Fourier transform infrared spectrometer, X-ray photoelectron spectrometer and X-ray diffractometer, which proved the successful doping of Fe3+ and grafting of -NH2. In the adsorption study, the adsorption reached equilibrium within 100 min with a maximum adsorption capacity of 661.2 mg/g at pH = 6 and a high adsorption efficiency of 99.4 % at low uranium(VI) concentration (pH = 6, m/V = 0.5 g/L). The mechanism study showed that the strong synergistic complexation of -OH and -NH2 for uranium(VI) played a decisive role in the adsorption process and the transport function of interlayer bound water could also enhance the adsorption probability of uranium(VI) species. These results were far superior to other reported similar materials, which proved that the Fe3+-doped and -NH2-grafted montmorillonite-based material possessed an extremely high application potential in adsorption, providing a new route for the modification of montmorillonite.

Abstract
The presence of dyes and heavy metals in wastewater represents a significant environmental and public health hazard, necessitating the development of efficient materials for their removal. In this study, we modified hydrolyzed polyacrylonitrile (PAN-H) and combined it with β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) by using an electrostatic spinning technique to fabricate composite nanofibrous membranes for water treatment applications. The resulting PAN-H/β-CD nanofiber membranes exhibit spindle-shaped fibers and porous structures with a high density of charged functional groups, which significantly enhance their selective adsorption capacity compared to pure PAN fibers. Furthermore, post-treatment with a sodium bicarbonate solution further improved this capacity, resulting in the membranes demonstrating a remarkable adsorption efficiency for cationic dyes. The adsorption process conformed to the Langmuir and pseudo-second-order kinetic models, with maximum adsorption capacities of 216.94 mg/g for methylene blue (MB), 471.59 mg/g for malachite green (MG), 299 mg/g for crystal violet (CV), and 43.95 mg/g for copper ions. The selective adsorption of these positively charged contaminants, particularly cationic dyes and metallic copper, indicates that PAN-H/β-CD membranes have significant potential for the treatment of wastewater containing similar pollutants.

Abstract
Efficient recovery of rare earth elements (REEs) from wastewater is crucial for advancing resource utilization and environmental protection. Herein, a novel nitrogen-rich hydrogel adsorbent (PEI-ALG@KLN) was synthesized by modifying coated kaolinite-alginate composite hydrogels with polyethylenimine through polyelectrolyte interactions and Schiff's base reaction. Various characterizations revealed that the high selective adsorption capacity of Ho (155 mg/g) and Nd (125 mg/g) on PEI-ALG@KLN is due to a combination of REEs (Lewis acids) via coordination interactions with nitrogen-containing functional groups (Lewis bases) and electrostatic interactions; its adsorption capacity remains more than 85 % after five adsorption-desorption cycles. In waste NdFeB magnet hydrometallurgical wastewater, the recovery rate of PEI-ALG@KLN for Nd and Dy can reach more than 93 %, whereas that of Fe is only 5.04 %. Machine learning prediction was used to evaluate adsorbent properties via different predictive models, with the random forest (RF) model showing superior predictive accuracy. The order of significance for adsorption capacity was pH > time > initial concentration > electronegativity > ion radius, as indicated by the RF model feature importance analysis and SHapley Additive exPlanations values. These results confirm that PEI-ALG@KLN has considerable potential in the selective extraction of REEs from wastewater.

JOURNAL OF HAZARDOUS MATERIALS 2024; 479:135688. Abstract
Hydrogel-based sorbents show promise in the removal of toxic metals from water. However, optimizing their performance through conventional trial-and-error methods is both costly and challenging due to the inherent high-dimensional parameter space associated with complex condition combinations. In this study, machine learning (ML) was employed to uncover the relationship between the fabrication condition of hydrogel sorbent and their efficiency in removing toxic metals. The developed XGBoost models demonstrated exceptional accuracy in predicting hydrogel adsorption coefficients (Kd) based on synthesis materials and fabrication conditions. Key factors such as reaction temperature (50-70 °C), time (5-72 h), initiator ((NH4)2S2O8: 2.3-10.3 mol%), and crosslinker (Methylene-Bis-Acrylamide: 1.5-4.3 mol%) significantly influenced Kd. Subsequently, ten hydrogels were fabricated utilizing these optimized feature combinations based on Bayesian optimization, exhibiting superior toxic metal adsorption capabilities that surpassed existing limits (logKd (Cu): increased from 2.70 to 3.06; logKd (Pb): increased from 2.76 to 3.37). Within these determined combinations, the error range (0.025-0.172) between model predictions and experimental validations for logKd (Pb) indicated negligible disparity. Our research outcomes not only offer valuable insights but also provide practical guidance, highlighting the potential for custom-tailored hydrogel designs to combat specific contaminants, courtesy of ML-based Bayesian optimization.

Abstract
The synthesis and characterization of novel nanocomposites with unique properties have garnered significant interest. Ag@CeO2 nanocomposite and its pullulan counterparts were prepared using a green approach involving rosemary extract. Characterization techniques, including Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy, UV-visible spectroscopy, zeta potential, Dynamic Light Scattering, High-Resolution Transmission Electron Microscopy, Energy-Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy, Scanning Electron Microscopy, and X-ray Diffraction, confirmed the formation of Ag@CeO2 nanoparticles (NPs). Pullulan led to increased particle size and improved homogeneity. Employing the Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) model to optimize methylene blue removal by Ag@CeO2 NPs and Ag@CeO2-pullulan NPs demonstrated predictive capabilities up to 97.53 % of MB removal (R2 = 0.9991). The antioxidant test demonstrated that rosemary extract exhibited the highest activity (IC50 = 0.011 mg/mL), then Ag@CeO2 NPs (IC50 = 0.039 mg/mL), and Ag@CeO2-pullulan NPs (IC50 = 0.041 mg/mL). Both Ag@CeO2 NPs and Ag@CeO2-pullulan NPs inhibited Candida albicans growth, with the latter exhibiting enhanced efficacy (MIC = 468.27, MFC = 936.53, and IC50 = 129.60 μg/mL). The study successfully synthesized novel Ag@CeO2-based nanocomposites coupled with pullulan with promising applications in dye removal, and antimicrobial therapy. The incorporation of pullulan improved the properties of the nanocomposites, enhancing their potential for practical use in environmental and biomedical applications.

Abstract
Herein, a novel acylhydrazone biosorbent (GSL) with abundant three-dimensional porous structure was successfully prepared by using low-cost starch as raw material for water pollution remediation applications. Various analytical techniques were applied to characterize the morphological structure and chemical composition. Interestingly, the adsorption efficiency of the adsorbent towards Malachite green (MG), Safranin O (SO), Cu2+, and sulfide in the static adsorption experiment was extremely high due to presence of ample functional groups. Additionally, the adsorption isotherm and kinetic experiments revealed that the adsorption processes were based on monolayer chemisorption. The maximum sorption amounts were 2237.4961 mg/g for SO, 2101.6610 mg/g for MG, 410.7019 mg/g for Cu2+, and 483.0194 mg/g for sulfides at 298.15 k. The thermodynamic analysis also demonstrated that all adsorption processes were spontaneous heat processes. The adsorption mechanism was analyzed by FTIR, SEM-EDAX and XPS. The adsorption of SO onto GSL reached 1025.8617 mg/g in continuous adsorption experiments, and the experimental data were fitted through the Thomas model and Yoon-Nelson model. Furthermore, the GSL showed good reusability and salt resistance. Importantly, starch-based acylhydrazone as the adsorbent for the simultaneous removal of hazardous dyes, heavy metal ions and sulfhides has not yet been seen reported.

Abstract
Constructing bio-based composite hydrogel materials are receiving much interest, while regulating the interactions of the hydrogel components and integrating functions for multi-application meet various challenges. Herein, composite hydrogels were prepared by cross-linking of poly-acrylamide (PAM) and poly-N-[3-(Dimethylamino) propyl] acrylamide (PDMAPAA), assisted by natural galactomannan (GM) regulation. Even distribution and compatibility of GM in the three-dimensional materials were proved by a series of chemical and morphological characterizations, which favored the improvement of mechanical properties (~80 kPa) and flexibility. Besides, the hydrogels were well-connected with double networks of noncovalent intermolecular hydrogen bonding interactions and hydrophobic interactions, in addition to covalent-linked polymers. Due to great amount of inner hydrogen bond linkages, the hydrogels present satisfying anti-swelling capabilities (<15 %), exhibiting high potential for application in water treatment. Meanwhile, abundant surface functional groups provided possibilities to form interactive layer with the various substrates surface, exhibiting highly adhesive properties. Significant dyes adsorption capabilities were revealed on the hydrogels according to the electrostatic attraction with Congo red and hydrogen bond interactions with Brilliant green respectively. Thus, the proposed composite hydrogels integrated multi-functions due to the tuning the surface groups and cross-linking interactions, which provided deeper understanding on bio-based materials on fields of water treatment and environmental protection.

Abstract
Cationic synthetic dyes are one of the hazards in aqueous solutions that can affect the health of humans and living organisms. In the current work, polyacrylamide (PAM)-g-gelatin hydrogel and modified PAM-g-gelatin hydrogel using activated carbon of Luffa cylindrica (ACL) and ACL/Mg-Fe LDH were applied to eliminate crystal violet (CV), a cationic dye, from water media. The hydrogels were synthesized using free radical polymerization approach, and the hydrogels were characterized using FTIR, XRD, TGA-DTG, BET, SEM, and EDX-Map. The surface area of ACL, ACL/Mg-Fe LDH, PAM-g-gelatin, PAM-g-gelatin/ACL, and PAM-g-gelatin/ACL/Mg-Fe LDH were 99.71, 141.99, 0.74, 1.47, and 1.65 m2/g, respectively, which shows that the presence of ACL and ACL/Mg-Fe LDH improved the area of the hydrogels. The maximum abatement of CV using PAM-g-gelatin (92.81%), PAM-g-gelatin/ACL (95.71%), and PAM-g-gelatin/ACL/Mg-Fe LDH (98.25%) was obtained at pH=9, temperature 25 °C, 10 mg/L CV, 60 min time, and adsorber dose of 2 g/L (for PAM-g-gelatin) and 1.5 g/L (other samples). The value of thermodynamic factors confirmed that the abatement process is exothermic and spontaneous. The kinetics data followed the pseudo-second kinetic (PSO) model. The Langmuir isotherm model had a more remarkable ability to describe the equilibrium data. The maximum adsorption capacity for PAM-g-gelatin, PAM-g-gelatin/ACL, and PAM-g-gelatin/ACL/Mg-Fe LDH was determined 35.45, 39.865, and 44.952 mg/g, respectively. Generally, the studied hydrogels can eliminate dyes from wastewater and be used as effective adsorbers.

Abstract
This study employed an anionic heteropolysaccharide extracted from overgrown Enteromorpha and homopolysaccharide pullulan to fabricate a self-floating hydrogel by introducing bubble templates. Subsequently, green in-situ reduction and immobilization of silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) in the hydrogel were successfully achieved without additional reducing agents. The heteropolysaccharide from Enteromorpha provides carboxyl and sulfate groups for Ag+ ions complexation, which is beneficial for the in-situ reduction of Ag NPs and inhibits their aggregation. The incorporation of bubble templates facilitates the creation of a hierarchical pore structure in the hydrogel, giving it self-floating properties for easy recycling, while the hierarchical network with rich anchor sites ensuring adequate traction for Ag NPs dispersion and stabilization. By adjusting polysaccharide content and using bubble templates, Ag NPs smaller than 10 nm can be obtained. The composite hydrogel exhibits tunable catalytic activity and excellent degradation towards Rhodamine B, Methyl Orange, and 4-Nitrophenol, with the normalized rate constant (knor) of 78.89, 59.08, and 30.42 min-1 g-1, respectively. Notably, the reduction efficiency remained above 98 % after 6 recycles with little leaching of Ag NPs, benefiting from its self-floating ability for easy recovery in practical applications.

Abstract
A high-performance dye adsorbent of Mg/Al-layered double hydroxide modified water hyacinth hydrochar (MgAl@WH) was synthesized by a simple hydrothermal method. The surface functional groups, elemental composition, crystalline structure, and surface morphology of the prepared (MgAl@WH) were determined using different analytical techniques. The characterization results revealed that the (MgAl@WH) hydrochar surface offered more active adsorption sites, facilitating the mordant brown (anionic dye) adsorption, leading to its superior performance with much higher uptake capability (311.0 mg g-1 at 298 K) than Mg/Al double hydroxide nanosheets (MgAl DLHs, 80.2 mg g-1 at 298 K) and dried water hyacinth (WH, 10.0 mg g-1 at 298 K). The adsorption behavior of MgAL@WH follows the pseudo second order kinetic model (R2 = 0.999) and Langmuir isotherm model (R2 = 0.999). Moreover, MgAl@WH bonded efficiently with mordant brown dye via hydrogen bonding and interlayer anion exchange with monolayer formation. Additionally, the recycling tests revealed that the MgAl@WH can be reused over 10 cycles without significant change in the removal efficiency. Based on the obtained findings, Mg/Al-layered double hydroxide modified water hyacinth hydrochar (MgAl@WH), for its economic and environmental benefits, has recently been used as an efficient adsorbent to remediate industrial wastewater containing anionic dyes.

Abstract
Removal of contaminants from discharge water is vital and demands urgent assistance with the goal to keep clean water. Adsorption is one of the most common, efficient, and low-priced methods used in water treatment. Various polysaccharide-based gels have been used as efficient dye adsorbents from wastewater. This review summarizes cutting-edge research of the last decade of different hydrogels based on natural polysaccharides (chitin, chitosan, cellulose, starch, pullulan, and dextran) concerning their dye adsorption efficiency. Beyond their natural abundance, attributes of polysaccharides such as biocompatibility, biodegradability, and low cost make them not only efficient, but also environmentally sustainable candidates for water purification. The synthesis and dye removal performance together with the effect of diverse factors on gels retaining ability, kinetic, and isotherm models encountered in adsorption studies, are introduced. Thermodynamic parameters, sorbent recycling capacity along with conclusions and future prospects are also presented.

Abstract
Two natural adsorbent materials, potassium humate (KHA) and montmorillonite (MMT), were successfully prepared by embedding them in sodium alginate (SA) gel spheres through physical cross-linking with CaCl2. And CaCO3 was used as a porogenic agent to prepare the porous composites, KHA/SA/MMT. The materials were characterized by using XRD, TGA, SEM, and N2 adsorption/desorption equipment. The results showed that MMT and KHA were successfully embedded in the SA gel; the introduction of MMT increased the thermal stability of the composites and the embedding of MMT, and the porogenic effect of CaCO3 increased the specific surface area of the composites substantially, which provided favorable conditions for adsorption and treatment of pollutants. In addition, a one-way exploratory experiment yielded a higher removal rate of Rhodamine B (RhB) at D = 0.6 g/L, pH = 5, C0 = 100 mg/L, and t = 360 min. The adsorption kinetics and adsorption isotherm conformed to the secondary kinetic model and Langmuir model, respectively, and the maximum adsorption of RhB by KHA/SA/MMT could reach up to 884.96 mg/g at 303 K. The adsorption mechanism for RhB was shown by FT-IR and XPS analyses to be possibly bound by non-covalent bonding forces. After seven consecutive adsorption-desorption cycles, the adsorption of RhB by KHA/SA/MMT still reached 80.75%. Therefore, the prepared gel spheres have the advantages of easy regeneration and efficient reuse and great potential for application in purifying RhB from wastewater.

Abstract
Phenols, dyes, and metal ions present in industrial wastewater can adversely affect the environment and leach biological carcinogens. Given that the current research focuses only on the removal of one or two of those categories. Herein, this work reports a novel ZIF-8@IL-MXene/Poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (NIPAM) nanocomposite hydrogel that can efficiently and conveniently absorb and separate multiple pollutants from industrial wastewater. Ionic liquid (IL) was grafted onto MXene surfaces using a one-step method, and then incorporated into NIPAM monomer solutions to obtain the IL-MXene/PNIPAM composite hydrogel via in-situ polymerization. ZIF-8@IL-MXene/PNIPAM nanocomposite hydrogels were obtained by in-situ growth of ZIF-8 on the pore walls of composite hydrogels. As-prepared nanocomposite hydrogel showed excellent mechanical properties and can withstand ten repeated compressions without any damage, the specific surface area increased by 100 times, and the maximum adsorption capacities for p-nitrophenol (4-NP), crystal violet (CV), and copper ion (Cu2+) were 198.40, 325.03, and 285.65 mg g-1, respectively, at room temperature. The VPTTs of all hydrogels ranged from 33 to 35 °C, so the desorption process can be achieved in deionized water at 35-40 °C, and its adsorption capacities after five adsorption-desorption cycles decreased to 79%, 91%, and 29% for 4-NP, CV, and Cu2+, respectively. The adsorption data fitting results follow pseudo-second-order kinetics and Freundlich models, which is based on multiple interactions between the functional groups contained in hydrogels and adsorbent molecules. The hydrogel is the first to realize the high-efficiency adsorption of phenols, dyes and metal ions in industrial wastewater simultaneously, and the preparation process of hydrogels is environmentally friendly. Also, giving hydrogel multifunctional adsorption is beneficial to promote the development of multifunctional adsorption materials.

Abstract
Water pollution had exacerbated the global water crisis. Dye effluents posed a serious threat to the environment and human health, so there was an urgent need to develop sustainable methods to mitigate water pollution. In this work, sodium-based montmorillonite (MMT) was stripped using ionic liquids (ILs) with different chain lengths, and a pAAM/pAA/LMA/MMT@ILs-CS hydrogel adsorbent (MICHA) was prepared. The gel-based adsorbent was used to adsorb typical cationic (methylene blue: MB, rhodamine B: RhB) and anionic (methyl orange: MO, indigo carmine: IC) dyes from wastewater. The maximum adsorption capacities of MI16CHA for MB, MO, IC and RhB were 349.6817, 325.415, 316.0142 and 339.8154 mg/g, respectively. The adsorption kinetics and equilibrium data of MI16CHA for dyes were in accordance with the pseudo-first order and Langmuir isotherm models. The adsorption mechanism of MI16CHA on dyes were based on hydrogen bonding, electrostatic and π-π interaction. Thermodynamic studies showed that the adsorption of dyes on MI16CHA was spontaneous and heat-absorbing. The selective experiments demonstrated that MI16CHA has a promising application in real industrial conditions. Cyclic adsorption tests demonstrated the excellent recyclability of MI16CHA. In addition, MI16CHA had excellent antimicrobial and mechanical properties, which endowed the gel adsorbent with anti-pollution and durability.

Abstract
Photocatalysts immobilized on hydrogels is a win-win mode, which not only improves photocatalysis but also successfully prevents catalyst loss, making it easy to separate and reuse during catalytic process. Here, ZnO-Ti3C2TX photocatalysts are loaded into the chitosan/polyacrylic acid hydrogel networks, realizing the efficiently photocatalytic degradation of norfloxacin. The chitosan-based composite hydrogel features rich functional groups and a dense pore structure, which is beneficial to antibiotic enrichment and photocatalytic degradation. The effects of different catalyst ratios, dosage, initial concentrations and pH on the degradation efficiency are investigated. The norfloxacin degradation rate constant is 0.012 min-1 and its degradation efficiency reaches up to 90 % after 240 min. Importantly, the photocatalytic composite hydrogel still retains 85 % degradation efficiency after 6 cycles. Moreover, e- plays a significant role in the degradation process. This work converts the traditional powder photocatalysts into bulk photocatalysts (photocatalytic hydrogels) to accomplish efficient degradation and rapid recycling for contaminant removal.

Abstract
The design and development of a rapid and quantitative method for the detection of heavy metal ions is of great importance for environmental protection. We have prepared a 1,8-Naphthalimide modified cellulose composite fluorescent hydrogel (CENAEA/PAA) with a stereo double network structure. Characterized by excellent hydrogel functional structure and fluorescence detection performance, it can efficiently and selectively identify and detect Cr(VI) with linear quenching in the range of 0-400 μmol/L and detection limit of 0.58 μmol/L for Cr(VI). The results show that the CENAEA/PAA can effectively adsorb Cr(VI) with a maximum adsorption capacity of 189.04 mg/g. Finally, the morphological characteristics, chemical structure, fluorescence properties and adsorption behavior of CENAEA/PAA were analyzed and fitted well with the pseudo-second-order model and Freundlich model. Thus, the present work provides a green and sustainable approach for the synthesis of a functional material that can be used for the detection and adsorption of heavy metal ions.

Abstract
Biomaterials-based adsorbents have emerged as a sustainable and promising solution for water purification, owing to their eco-friendly nature and remarkable adsorption capacities. In this study, a biocomposite hydrogel was prepared by the incorporation of activated carbon derived from pomegranate peels (PPAC) in tragacanth gum (TG). The hydrogel biocomposite (PPAC/TG) showed a porous structure, a negative surface charge at a pH of more than 4.9, and good stability in aqueous media. The adsorption properties of the PPAC/TG hydrogel biocomposite were assessed for the removal of crystal violet dye (CV) from aqueous solutions using a batch adsorption. The equilibrium adsorption data followed the Sips isotherm model, as supported by the calculated R2 (>0.99), r-χ2 (<64), and standard error values (<16). According to the Sips model, the maximum values of the adsorption capacity of PPAC/TG were 455.61, 470.86, and 477.37 mg/g at temperatures of 25, 30, and 35 °C, respectively. The adsorption kinetic of CV onto the PPAC/TG hydrogel biocomposite was well described by the pseudo-second-order model with R2 values more than 0.999 and r-χ2 values less than 12. Thermodynamic studies confirmed that the CV dye adsorption was spontaneous and endothermic. Furthermore, the prepared hydrogel exhibited excellent reusability, retaining its adsorption capacity even after being used more than five times. Overall, this study concludes that the prepared PPAC/TG exhibited a significant adsorption capacity for cationic dyes, indicating its potential as an effective and eco-friendly adsorbent for water treatment.

Abstract
The elimination of pathogenic bacteria from water sources is currently crucial for obtaining drinkable water. Therefore, the development of platforms with the ability to interact with pathogens and remove them is a potential future tool for medicine, food and water safety. In this work, we have grafted a layer of NH2-MIL-125 (Ti) on Fe3O4@SiO2 magnetic nanospheres for the removal of multiple pathogenic bacteria from water. The synthesized Fe3O4@SiO2@NH2-MIL-125 (Ti) nano adsorbent was characterized by FE-SEM, HR-TEM, FT-IR, XRD, BET surface analysis, magnetization tests, respectively, which illustrated its well-defined core-shell structure and magnetic behaviour. The prepared magnetic-MOF composite sorbent was attractive towards capturing a wide range of pathogens (S. typhimurium, S. aureus, E. coli, P. aeruginosa and K. pneumoniae) under experimental conditions. Influence factors such as adsorbent dosage, bacterial concentration, pH and incubation time were optimized for enhanced bacterial capture. The application of an external magnetic field removed Fe3O4@SiO2@NH2-MIL-125 (Ti) nano adsorbent from the solution along with sweeping the attached pathogenic bacteria. The non-specific removal efficiency of S. typhimurium for magnetic MOF composite was 96.58%, while it was only 46.81% with Fe3O4@SiO2 particles. For specific removal, 97.58% of S. typhimurium could be removed selectively from a mixture with monoclonal anti- Salmonella antibody conjugated magnetic MOF at a lower concentration of 1.0 mg/mL. The developed nano adsorbent may find great potential in microbiology applications and water remediation.

Abstract
Low-cost and reliable wastewater treatment is a relevant issue worldwide to reduce the concentration of environmental pollutants. Industrial effluents containing dyes, heavy metals, and other inorganic and organic compounds can pollute water resources; therefore, novel technologies are required to mitigate and control their release into the environment. Adsorption is one of the simplest methods for treating contaminated water in which a wide spectrum of adsorbents can be used to remove emerging compounds. Hydrogels are interesting materials with high adsorption capacities that can be synthesized via green routes. These adsorbents are promising for large-scale industrial wastewater treatment applications; however, gaps still exist in achieving sustainable commercial implementation. This review focuses on the discussion and analysis of preparation, characterization, and adsorption properties of hydrogels for water purification. The advantages of these polymeric materials for water treatment were analyzed, including their performance in the removal of different organic and inorganic contaminants. Recent advances in the functionalization of hydrogels and the synthesis of novel composites have also been described. The adsorption capacities of hydrogel-based adsorbents are higher than 500 mg/g for different organic and inorganic pollutants, and can reach values of up to >2000 mg/g for organic compounds, significantly outperforming other materials reported for water cleaning. The main interactions involved in the adsorption of water pollutants using hydrogel-based adsorbents were described and explained to allow the interpretation of their removal mechanisms. The current challenges in the implementation of hydrogels for water purification in real-life operations are also highlighted. This review provides an updated picture of hydrogels as interesting materials to address water depollution worldwide.

Abstract
The flammability and gas barrier properties are essential for package material. Herein, a highly-oriented self-assembly nanocoating composed of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and montmorillonite (MMT) was prepared for endowing polyethylene terephthalate (PET) films with excellent flame retardancy and gas barrier properties. The specific regular nanosheet structure of the PVA/MMT composite nanocoating was confirmed by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and the vertical burning test (VBT) suggested that the thermal stability and flame-retardancy of the coated PET films were considerably improved with more pick-up of the resulting nanocoating. When reaching 650 °C, there was still 22.6% char residual left for coated PET film, while only 6% char residual left for pristine PET film. During the vertical burning test, the flame did not spread through the whole PET film with the protection of PVA/MMT nanocoating, and no afterflame was observed. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) is consistent with vertical burning test, proving that the thermal stability and flame retardancy of coated PET films were considerably enhanced with the increment of PVA/MMT. Thanks to the multi-layer structure, PVA/MMT nanocoating could effectively improve the gas barrier properties of PET films, and the oxygen vapor transmittance rate and water vapor transmittance rate of PET films were more than four hundred times lower and 30% lower than those of neat PET film. Our work demonstrates that bi-functional flame retardant and gas barrier materials could be gained via constructing inorganic/organic highly-oriented self-assembly nanocoating, which is promising in the area of packaging.

ENVIRONMENTAL RESEARCH 2023:116350. [PMID: 37290619 DOI: 10.1016/j.envres.2023.116350] [Citation(s) in RCA: 5] [Impact Index Per Article: 2.5] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Key Words] [Track Full Text] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 04/25/2023] [Revised: 06/02/2023] [Accepted: 06/06/2023] [Indexed: 06/10/2023]
Abstract
The performance of a moving bed biofilm reactor (MBBR) depends largely on the type of biofilm carrier used. However, how different carriers affect the nitrification process, particularly when treating anaerobic digestion effluents, is not completely understood. This study aimed to evaluate the nitrification performance of two distinct biocarriers in MBBRs over a 140-d operation period, with a gradually decreasing hydraulic retention time (HRT) from 20 to 10 d. Reactor 1 (R1) was filled with fiber balls, whereas a Mutag Biochip was used for reactor 2 (R2). At an HRT of 20 d, the ammonia removal efficiency of both reactors was >95%. However, as the HRT was reduced, the ammonia removal efficiency of R1 gradually declined, ultimately dropping to 65% at a 10-d HRT. In contrast, the ammonia removal efficiency of R2 consistently exceeding 99% throughout the long-term operation. R1 exhibited partial nitrification, whereas R2 exhibited complete nitrification. Analysis of microbial communities showed that the abundance and diversity of bacterial communities, particularly nitrifying bacteria such as Hyphomicrobium sp. And Nitrosomonas sp., in R2 was higher than that in R1. In conclusion, the choice of biocarrier significantly impact the abundance and diversity of microbial communities in MBBR systems. Therefore, these factors should be closely monitored to ensure the efficient treatment of high-strength ammonia wastewater.

Abstract
Efficient magnetic solid phase extraction using covalent organic frameworks (COFs) can find important applications in food safety. In this work, a sulfonate-functionalized magnetic COF (Fe3O4@COF-SO3Na) was synthesized by self-polycondensation of two-in-one monomer 1,6-bis(4-formylphenyl)-3,8-bis((4-aminophenyl) ethynyl)) pyrene (BFBAEPy) on the surface of aminated Fe3O4 and a thiol-yne click reaction. It was further adopted as an adsorbent for the efficient magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE) of basic orange II. The selective adsorption experiment indicated that it displayed selective adsorption ability to basic orange II due to the ion exchange, hydrogen bonds, and π-π interactions. Under the optimized conditions, the proposed MSPE method coupled with HPLC-DAD showed excellent linearity in the range of 0.05-0.5 µg/mL (R2 = 0.9997) for basic orange II. The lower limits of detection (LODs) for basic orange II were 1.0-1.4 µg/L for three food samples: yellow croaker, paprika and dried bean curd. The recoveries were 90.1-98.8% with relative standard deviations (RSDs) below 4.2%. Therefore, this work provides an effective strategy to modify magnetic COFs as absorbents in MSPE. Due to the tunability of functional groups in thiol‑yne click reactions, the functional groups of magnetic COFs can be readily designed to enrich their multifunctional applications. Meanwhile, this work proposed a new method to detect trace amounts of basic orange II in food samples.

Abstract
In this study, composite hydrogels were prepared using a simple synthetic technique to adsorb methylene blue (MB) from water. The hydrogel comprised potassium persulfate (KPS) as the initiator, N,N'-methylene bisacrylamide as the crosslinking agent, and sodium hydroxide (NaOH) as the activator. It was employed to adsorb MB at different concentrations from water. The morphology and properties of PUL/PAM/GO composites were characterized through thermogravimetric analysis, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy. Moreover, the adsorption properties, adsorption isotherms, adsorption kinetics, adsorption thermodynamics, and swelling properties of the hydrogel for MB were investigated. The optimal ratio of PUL to AC was obtained as 6:1 by fixing the amount of PUL and loading AC of different masses. The maximum adsorption capacity was obtained as 591.4 mg/g. It also exhibited certain mechanical strength. The adsorption of MB conforms to pseudo-first-order kinetics and Langmuir isotherms. In this study, an environment-friendly, cheap, simple, and efficient way was presented for the composite hydrogel in the direction of water treatment.

Abstract
In this work, a polyethyleneimine-modified chitosan/Ce-UIO-66 composite hydrogel (PEI-CS/Ce-UIO-66) was prepared using the ex-situ blend method. The synthesized composite hydrogel was characterized by SEM, EDS, XRD, FTIR, BET, XPS, and TG techniques, while the zeta potential was recorded for sample analysis. The adsorbent performance was studied by conducting adsorption experiments using methyl orange (MO), which showed that PEI-CS/Ce-UIO-66 exhibited excellent MO adsorption properties (900.5 ± 19.09 mg/g). The adsorption kinetics of PEI-CS/Ce-UIO-66 could be explained by the pseudo-second-order kinetic model, and its isothermal adsorption followed the Langmuir model. Thermodynamics showed that the adsorption was spontaneous and exothermic at low temperatures. MO could interact with PEI-CS/Ce-UIO-66 via electrostatic interaction, π-π stacking, and hydrogen bonding. The results indicated that the PEI-CS/Ce-UIO-66 composite hydrogel could potentially be used for the adsorption of anionic dyes.

Abstract
This work reports the synthesis of an innovative multifunctional carbon nitride based adsorbent and its successful application for the removal of crystal violet (CV) and methylene blue (MB) from wastewater. The functionalized graphitic carbon nitride (f/g-CN) adsorbent was produced by the pyrolysis of melamine followed by thermal alkali treatment to introduce OH, NH x , and CN groups onto the graphitic carbon nitride (g-CN) surface. Experimental data obtained from batch tests revealed that the maximum adsorption capacities of g-CN and f/g-CN were found to be 28.9 and 239.0 mg g-1 for MB, and 163.0 and 532.0 mg g-1 for CV, respectively, at pH 8, 25 °C and after 90 min. This increase in adsorption capacity of f/g-CN can be explained by the presence of multiple functional groups in its structure. f/g-CN showed 100% removal for MB and CV with concentrations lower than 100 ppm and the equilibrium time required for the 100% removal of 500 ppb dye is 60 seconds. Additionally, the experimental data fitted well with the Langmuir isotherm model (R 2 = 0.992) and pseudo second order kinetic model (R 2 = 0.999) suggesting that the mechanism of adsorption is based on π-π stacking and electrostatic interactions between the NH x and OH groups of f/g-CN and dye molecules with monolayer formation. Moreover, a reusability test showed that the adsorption capacity remained at around 90% after 7 cycles. This work highlights the merits of the prepared adsorbent f/g-CN which is an eco-friendly, stable, efficient, and reusable adsorbent for removing cationic dyes from wastewater.

Abstract
A novel adsorbent of carbon@chitosan@montmorillonite nanosheet (C@CS@ MTN) was successfully fabricated layer-by-layer assembly method to deal with cationic dye wastewater. Batch adsorption experiments showed that the adsorption capacities of MB and RhB were higher than 325 mg·g-1 and 236 mg·g-1, respectively, indicating that C@CS@MTN exhibited an excellent adsorption performance. Through quantum chemistry simulations, the molecular electrostatic potential, electron density, differential charge density, molecular orbital distribution and adsorption binding energy were analyzed to reveal the adsorption reaction mechanism between C@CS@MTN and cationic dyes. The results indicated that SiO tetrahedron ring and AlO octahedron ring released from montmorillonite with inherent periodic structure was beneficial to electrostatic attraction, while cation-π interaction benefitted from the interaction between Al atoms of AlO octahedron ring and benzene ring. It was noteworthy that the electron transfer direction of electrostatic attraction was from O atoms of SiO tetrahedron ring to the benzene ring of dye molecules, but the electron transfer direction of cation-π interaction was from benzene ring of dye molecules to Al atoms of AlO octahedron ring. These results provide fundamental theoretical support for the functional design of mineral-based adsorbents and the efficient removal of cationic dyes.

Abstract
Nowadays, pollution has become the main bottleneck towards sustainable technological development due to its detrimental implications in human and ecosystem health. Removal of pollutants from the surrounding environment is a hot research area worldwide; diverse technologies and materials are being continuously developed. To this end, bio-based composite hydrogels as sorbents have received extensive attention in recent years because of advantages such as high adsorptive capacity, controllable mechanical properties, cost effectiveness, and potential for upscaling in continuous flow installations. In this review, we aim to provide an up-to-date analysis of the literature on recent accomplishments in the design of polysaccharide-based composite hydrogels for removal of heavy metal ions, dyes, and oxyanions from wastewater. The correlation between the constituent polysaccharides (chitosan, cellulose, alginate, starch, pectin, pullulan, xanthan, salecan, etc.), engineered composition (presence of other organic and/or inorganic components), and sorption conditions on the removal performance of addressed pollutants will be carefully scrutinized. Particular attention will be paid to the sustainability aspects in the selected studies, particularly to composite selectivity and reusability, as well as to their use in fixed-bed columns and real wastewater applications.

Abstract
Noncovalent interactions, which usually feature tunable strength, reversibility, and environmental adaptability, have been recognized as driving forces in a variety of biological and chemical processes, contributing to the recognition between molecules, the formation of molecule clusters, and the establishment of complex structures of macromolecules. The marriage of noncovalent interactions and conventional covalent polymers offers the systems novel mechanical, physicochemical, and biological properties, which are highly dependent on the binding mechanisms of the noncovalent interactions that can be illuminated via quantification. This review systematically discusses the nanomechanical characterization of typical noncovalent interactions in polymeric systems, mainly through direct force measurements at microscopic, nanoscopic, and molecular levels, which provide quantitative information (e.g., ranges, strengths, and dynamics) on the binding behaviors. The fundamental understandings of intermolecular and interfacial interactions are then correlated to the macroscopic performances of a series of noncovalently bonded polymers, whose functions (e.g., stimuli-responsiveness, self-healing capacity, universal adhesiveness) can be customized through the manipulation of the noncovalent interactions, providing insights into the rational design of advanced materials with applications in biomedical, energy, environmental, and other engineering fields.

Abstract
With the fast development of modern industries, scarcity of freshwater resources caused by heavy metal pollution (i.e., Hg2+) has become a severe issue for human beings. Herein, a 3D-MoS2 sponge as an excellent absorbent is fabricated for mercury removal due to its multidimensional adsorption pathways, which decreases the biomagnification effect of methylmercury in water bodies. Furthermore, a secondary water purification strategy is employed to harvest drinkable water with the exhausted adsorbents, thus alleviating the crisis of drinking water shortage. Compared to the conventional landfill treatment, the exhausted MoS2 sponge absorbents are further functionalized with a poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) layer to prevent the heavy metals from leaking and enhance the hydrophilicity for photothermal conversion. The fabricated evaporator displays excellent evaporation rates of ∼1.45 kg m-2 h-1 under sunlight irradiation and produces freshwater with Hg2+ under the WHO drinking water standard at 0.001 mg L-1. These results not only assist in avoiding the biodeposition effect of mercury in water but also provide an environment-friendly strategy to recycle hazardous adsorbents for water purification.

Abstract
In the present investigation, a novel, green, and economical dual-functionalized pullulan/kaolin hydrogel nanocomposite (f-PKHN) was fabricated and subsequently applied for the liquid-phase decontamination of paracetamol (PCT), a pharmaceutical pollutant. Pullulan and kaolin were functionalized with l-asparagine and gallic acid, respectively. The physicochemical facets of the functionalized pullulan/kaolin hydrogel nanocomposite and its interactive behavior with PCT were elucidated by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDX), and elemental mapping. The process parameters along with the isotherm, kinetics, and thermodynamics were methodically appraised via a batch technique to unveil the adsorption performance of the as-fabricated hydrogel nanocomposite. The adsorption isotherm and kinetics of PCT uptake by f-PKHN conform well to Freundlich and pseudo-second-order models, respectively. Relying on hydrogen bonding, n-π, and van der Waals interactions, the maximum adsorption capacity was 332.54 mg g-1, higher than for most of the previous adsorbents reported in the literature for PCT removal. Thermodynamic calculations corroborated endothermic, spontaneous, and feasible adsorption phenomena. The maintenance of a high uptake percentage (69.11%) in the fifth consecutive adsorption-desorption cycle implied the significant reusable potential of f-PKHN. Swelling studies exhibited 90% swelling within 200 min, indicating the successful fabrication of a cross-linked hydrogel network. The real water (distilled water, tap water, and river water) samples spiked with PCT specified a significant uptake of PCT (>85%), and the minor influence of ionic strength on the adsorptive potential of f-PKHN validated its potentiality for the decontamination of real effluents. In conclusion, f-PKHN with substantial adsorption capacity, green characteristics, and excellent reusability can be reckoned with as a promising adsorbent for the de-escalation of PCT from aquatic sources as well as at the industrial level.

Abstract
Antibiotic resistance is one of the major causes of morbidity and mortality, triggered by the adhesion of microbes and to some extent the formation of biofilms. This condition has been quite challenging in the health and industrial sector. Conditions and processes required to foil these infectious and resistance are of much concern. The synthesis of PDA material, inspired by the Mytilus edulis foot protein (MEFP)5 possesses unique characteristics that allow for, adhesion, photothermal therapy, synergistic effects with other materials, biocompatibility process, etc. Therefore, their usage holds great potential for dealing with both the infectious nature and the antibiotic resistance processes. Hence, this review provides an overview of the mechanism involved in accomplishing and eradicating bacteria, the recently harnessed antibacterial effect of the PDA through other properties they possess, a way forward in tapping the benefit embedded in the PDA, and the future perspective.

Abstract
Water shortages have become a serious issue, so the importance of developing innovative cellulose-based superabsorbent polymer (SAP) was experimentally assessed as an environmentally friendly alternative to acrylate-based SAPs for the optimization of water consumption. The development of a biodegradable superabsorbent hydrogel composite based on a graft copolymer of carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) and mixtures of different comonomers such as an acrylamide-co-acrylic acid-co-2-acrylamido-2-methylpropanesulfonic acid (Am-co-AA-co-AMPS) CMC-g-TerPoly interpenetrating network was characterized by infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), scan electron microscopy (SEM), atomic force microscope (AFM), thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA), and swelling capacity in different aqueous media. The optimized CMC-g-(TerPoly) composite showing outstanding superabsorbance with high water retention, the ratio of constituents, temperature, and pH effect on equilibrium swelling have been optimized by using multistage response surface methodology (RSM). In distilled water (d-water), the equilibrium water absorption capacity (EW) of the synthesized composite hydrogels (SAP-IPN1) is 1200 g (d-water/1g hydrogel) which is superior to any other commercial polyacrylate SAP hydrogels, while in saline water the EW is 650 g (s-water/1g hydrogel). The performance of the SAP-IPN for water retention was evaluated by studying several swelling/deswelling cycle measurements. The prepared SAP-IPN hydrogels were found to show pH and salt solution dependence on the swelling behavior. The new SAP-IPN can work with commercial SAP, which is recommended for application as a water reservoir in arid land for irrigation for agriculture purposes.

Abstract
Fenton-like catalysts represent a family of promising materials to degrade micropollutants from contaminated water. However, the practical applications of Fenton-like catalysts are mainly limited by low catalytic degradation efficiency and stability. Herein, for the first time, rapid fabrication of Ag-decorated Fe3O4/polydopamine (FPA) microspheres was achieved via the help of UV irradiation, and the designed FPA microspheres were employed as Fenton-like catalysts to degrade micropollutants. Results showed that UV irradiation could activate the generation of the polydopamine shell and accelerate the Ag deposition, which played a crucial role in the rapid synthesis of highly active and stable FPA catalysts. Relative to reported catalysts, these FPA microspheres exhibited outstanding catalytic degradation performance, achieving 94.38% removal of tetracycline within 60 min. This work will provide a convenient strategy in the sustainable and efficient purification of wastewater to improve the quality of human life.

Abstract
Cu(II)-citrate (Cu(II)-CA) complex, as one of the components in plating solutions, increases the difficulty of Cu(II) treatment due to its stable structure and high mobility. In this work, a novel surface imprinted polymer (Cu-CA-SIP) for selective removal of Cu(II)-CA complex from aqueous solution is synthesized by using polyethyleneimine (PEI) grafted onto chloromethylated polystyrene (CMP) microspheres. Cu(II)-CA anions are successfully imprinted with the molar ration of 1:1 by Cu-CA-SIP at initial pH 4.0. Nearly 100% removal rate can be achieved even at low Cu(II)-CA concentration (0.5 mmol/L), and the maximum Cu(II) uptake of Cu-CA-SIP reaches 1.38 mmol/g at 303 K. In Cu(II)/Fe(III)-CA, Cu(II)/Ni(II)-CA, Cu(II)/Zn(II)-CA and Cu(II)/Cd(II)-CA systems, the relative selectivity coefficients of Cu-CA-SIP for Cu(II)-CA are 9.66, 2.32, 1.40 and 44.55, respectively. Moreover, Cu-CA-SIP can be retrieved with negligible loss of adsorption capacity after six times of reuse. The Cu-CA-SIP column can effectively treat the actual electroplating wastewater within 114 BV, and can still reach 104 BV after three dynamic cycles. Therefore, an innovative imprinted material is designed for the first time on the basis of coordination-configuration recognition mechanism for the treatment of electroplating wastewater, providing a new insight in developing surface imprinted polymer in environmental remediation.

Abstract
Herein, a functionalized green hydrogel nanocomposite based on carboxymethylated gum tragacanth and nanobentonite (GTBCH) was designed via free-radical polymerization approach for the elimination of Aspartame (AS) from wastewater. The GTBCH fabrication was validated by Fourier Transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) techniques. Central composite design (CCD) was efficaciously applied to determine the quadratic polynomial approach for predicting the adsorption capacity (qe) of AS. The optimum sequestration conditions were dosage (0.8 g L‒1), agitation time (35 min) initial AS concentration (60 mg L-1), pH (6) and temperature (308 K). The CCD results revealed that dosage of GTBCH and initial concentration have greater impact on qe followed by pH, time, and temperature. The significant adsorption capacity (392.04 mg g-1), calculated from Langmuir model, could be attributed to the stronger interactions prevalent between AS and GTBCH. Diffusion investigations depicted the uptake of AS via surface adsorption, liquid film and intraparticle diffusion, respectively. Ionic strength and real water have minor effect on the adsorption capacity demonstrating electrostatic interaction has least impact in adsorption process. The pHzpc, FTIR and XPS investigations revealed hydrogen bonding, n-π and van der Waals interactions as the principal removal mechanisms. Robust design, high adsorption capacity, eco-friendly facets along with excellent reusability indicated the GTBCH as a competent adsorbent for AS decontamination from wastewater.

Abstract
In this work, for the first time, a new magnetic cadmium-based MOFs (Fe3O4@Cd-MOF) was successfully synthesized in a green way and then modified with chitosan (CS) in the microsphere form (Fe3O4@Cd-MOF@CS). The obtained materials were fully characterized by several techniques. In the following, the efficiency of Fe3O4@Cd-MOF@CS was explored for the removal of amoxicillin (AMX). The outcome of the adsorption study showed that the removal efficiency is affected by CS and reaches its optimum at pH 8 and contact time of 240 min. Under optimized conditions, over 75% of AMX was removed. The kinetic and the isotherm of the adsorption were fit with the pseudo-second-order model and the Langmuir adsorption isotherm respectively. Eventually, the maximum adsorption capacity was obtained ~103.09 mg/g. Interestingly, these findings convince that the newly prepared Fe3O4@Cd-MOF@CS could be proposed as a promising magnetically separable adsorbent for antibiotic contaminants removal from the aqueous solution.
