Organoarsenic conversion to As(III) in subcritical hydrothermal reaction of livestock manure

Relationships between arsenic biotransformation genes, antibiotic resistance genes, and microbial function under different arsenic stresses during composting

Although the arsenic contamination and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) during composting have been studied separately, there is limited information on their interactions, particularly, the relationship between arsenic biotransformation genes (ABGs) and ARGs. Therefore, the present study used different forms of arsenic stress (organic and inorganic arsenic at 10 and 50 mg/kg) in pig manure and straw co-composting, to evaluate the effects of arsenic stress on microbial community structures, metabolic function, ABGs, and ARGs. The results showed that arsenic stress had different effects on different parameters and promoted the microbial formation of humic acid and the biodegradation of fulvic acid. Inorganic arsenic showed more rapid effects on microbial community structure, visible within about 20 days, while the effects of organic arsenic were later (about 45 days) due to the necessity of transformation. Moreover, the addition of organic roxarsone and inorganic arsenic resulted in higher expression of ABGs and ARGs, respectively. Arsenic addition also caused increased expression of genes associated with replication and repair. A significant relationship was observed between ABG and ARG expression, for instance, genes involved in arsenic reduction and oxidation were influenced by genes involved in aminoglycoside and chloramphenicol resistance genes (p < 0.05). These complex interactions among microorganisms, functional genes, and external parameters contribute to the understanding of the mechanisms underlying cross-contamination.

Rethinking quantified methods for arsenic speciation and risk in a biowaste hydrothermal liquefaction system

Controversy exists to quantify the fate and speciation of Arsenic (As). We investigated its characteristics by As-containing algae in various pH hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) system, specifically via two classical methods, i.e. the European Community Bureau of Reference (BCR) and Wenzel's method. Solid residue immobilized 11.23-16.55% of As, and 88.07-82.44% was in aqueous by the pH regulators (e.g., CH₃COOH, HCl, and KOH). ICP-MS and XRD analysis revealed that As (V) was converted into As (III) and As (0) in the solid residue, while the As (V) was mainly converted into As (III) in the aqueous phase during HTL. When the classified forms of As in solid residue are compared, Wenzel's method was more appropriate for dividing the bio-availability forms of As, whereas BCR was better for estimating the toxic-potential forms of As. Subsequently, pH regulators raised the risk of As in solid residue associated with the increasing of unstable forms. The amide was hydrolyzed to carboxylic acid with acidic additives, which weakened the reducing environment in the HTL process. In contrast, the amide was hydrolyzed to ammonia with the alkaline additives, which enhanced the reducing environment and increased the risk of As in products. This work provided a new insight in systematically evaluating the risk and speciation of As in HTL.

Development of robust multifunctional CrNiCo-P/GCN catalyst for oxygen evolution reaction, electrochemical sensing, and photodegradation of roxarsone

In this study, we designed a CrNiCo-P/GCN composite for use as a high-performance multifunctional catalyst for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER), electrochemical determination, and photodegradation of roxarsone (ROX). CrNiCo-P/GCN demonstrates favorable charge resistance and electrical conductance due to its intrinsic properties. It exhibits an admirable OER overpotential of 290 mV with a lower Tafel plot value of 125 mV dec^-1 in alkaline media and compared with the control samples. Furthermore, this composite also demonstrates high performance in electrochemical sensing of ROX over a wide concentration range of 1-413 μM with a lower limit of detection (LOD) of 31 nM in phosphate buffer. Moreover, this composite is a promising electrocatalyst for ROX sensors in practical analysis and also possesses excellent photodegradation of ROX under visible light irradiation.

Thermochemical conversion of heavy metal contaminated biomass: Fate of the metals and their impact on products

With the rapid depletion of fossil energy and increasingly severe environmental pollution, the development of biomass resources for biorefineries has become a new research focus. However, heavy metals may be released during the thermochemical treatment when the biomass materials used in biomass conversion are contaminated by heavy metals. This can cause secondary environmental pollution or transference to the target products, reducing product quality. Therefore, having a systematic understanding of the fate of heavy metals in biomass conversion is necessary for alleviating potential risks. This study presents the current status of contaminated biomass and conversion products involving thermochemical processes, the migration, transformation, and impact of heavy metals in biomass conversion was investigated, and the utilization of heavy metals in contaminated biomass was briefly outlined. This review aims to link biomass conversion to the fate of heavy metals, avoid existing risks as much as possible to produce cleaner products efficiently, and promote the sustainable development of heavy metal contaminated biomass resources.

Green products from herbal medicine wastes by subcritical water treatment

Herbal medicine wastes (HMWs) are byproducts of medicine factories, which are mainly landfilled for their environmental problems. Only bearing in mind the contamination and concerns caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and environmental emissions, the worth of herbal medicine wastes management and conversion to green products can be understood. In this work, subcritical water treatment was carried out batch-wise in a stainless tube reactor in the pressure range of 0.792-30.0 MPa, varying the temperature (127-327 °C) and time (1-60 min) of extraction. This resulted in new and green material sources, including organic acids, amino acids, and sugars. Amazingly, at very low extraction times (below 5 min) and high temperatures (above 277 °C), about 99% of HMWs were efficaciously converted to clean products by subcritical hydrothermal treatment. The results of hydrothermal extraction after 5 min indicated that at low temperatures (127-227 °C), the total organic carbon in the aqueous phase increased as the residual solid phase decreased, reaching a peak around 220 °C. Acetone soluble extracts or fat phase appeared above 227 °C and reached a maximum yield of 21% at 357 °C. Aspartic acid, threonine, and glycine were the primary amino acids; glycolic acid, formic acid, lactic acid, and acetic acid were obtained as the main organic acids, glucose, fructose, and cellobiose were substantial sugars produced from the aqueous phase after 5 min of hydrothermal subcritical hydrolysis extraction.

Hydrothermal liquefaction accelerates the toxicity and solubility of arsenic in biowaste

Arsenic (As) is one of notorious metalloids due to its high toxicity to human beings and ecological system. Understanding its fate and speciation transformation mechanism during hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) of microalgae is of crucial importance for the application of its HTL products. 80.0-96.7% of As in raw microalgae was migrated into the liquid phase (aqueous phase and biocrude oil) with the increase of reaction severity from 0.108 to 0.517. HPLC-ICPMS reveals that 67% of the As in microalgae accounted for As(V) with a concentration of 68.4 mg/kg. The other fractions in microalgae were primarily As(III) with a concentration of 36.3 mg/kg. Model compounds experiments illustrate that over 30% of the As(V) in feedstocks was unexpectedly converted into more soluble and toxic As (III). Hydrochar containing O-containing groups (e.g., aliphatic C-OH) was probably contribute to the reduction transformation of As(V) to higher toxic As(III). Meantime, the aqueous phase facilitated the reduction reaction via providing a reducing environment and serving as hydrogen donator. This study firstly revealed the speciation transformation of As(V) to As(III) during HTL of wastewater cultivated microalgae.
