Catalytic ozonation of iohexol with α-Fe0.9Mn0.1OOH in water: Efficiency, degradation mechanism and toxicity evaluation

Catalytic activation of percarbonate with synthesized carrollite for efficient decomposition of bisphenol S: Performance, degradation mechanism and toxicity assessment

This study demonstrates the novel application of carrollite (CuCo2S4) for the activation of sodium percarbonate (SPC) towards bisphenol S (BPS) degradation. The effect of several crucial factors like BPS concentration, CuCo2S4 dosage, SPC concentration, reaction temperature, water matrices, inorganic anions, and pH value were investigated. Experimental results demonstrated that BPS could be efficiently degraded by CuCo2S4-activated SPC system (88.52% at pH = 6.9). The mechanism of BPS degradation by CuCo2S4-activated SPC system was uncovered by quenching and electron spin resonance experiments, discovering that a multiple reactive oxygen species process was involved in BPS degradation by hydroxyl radical (•OH), superoxide radical (•O2-), singlet oxygen superoxide (1O2) and carbonate radical (•CO3-). Furthermore, the S(-II) species facilitated rapid redox cycles between Cu(I)/Cu(II) and Co(II)/Co(III). •CO3- was found to not only directly react with BPS molecules, but also act as a bridge to promote •O2- and 1O2 generation, thereby accelerating BPS degradation. Finally, the combination of UHPLC/Q-TOF-MS test with density functional theory (DFT) method was employed to detect major degradation intermediates and thereby elucidate possible reaction pathways of BPS degradation. This study provides a novel strategy by integrating transition metal sulfides with percarbonate for the elimination of organic pollutants in water.

Disinfection byproducts of iopamidol, iohexol, diatrizoate and their distinct acute toxicity on Scenedesmus sp., Daphnia magna and Danio rerio

The COVID-19 pandemic resulted in increasing the usage of iodinated contrast media (ICM), and thus an increase in the prevalence of ICM-contaminated wastewater. While ICM is generally safe, this has the potential to be problematic because as medical wastewater is treated and disinfected, various ICM-derived disinfection byproducts (DBPs) may be generated and released into the environment. However, little information was available about whether ICM-derived DBPs are toxic to aquatic organisms. In this study, the degradation of three typical ICM (iopamidol, iohexol, diatrizoate) at initial concentration of 10 μM and 100 μM in chlorination and peracetic acid without or with NH₄⁺ was investigated, and the potential acute toxicity of treated disinfected water containing potential ICM-derived DBPs on Daphnia magna, Scenedesmus sp. and Danio rerio was tested. The degradation results suggested that only iopamidol was significantly degraded (level of degradation >98%) by chlorination, and the degradation rate of iohexol and diatrizoate were significantly increased in chlorination with NH₄⁺. All three ICM were not degraded in peracetic acid. The toxicity analysis results indicate that only the disinfected water of iopamidol and iohexol by chlorination with NH₄⁺ were toxic to at least one aquatic organism. These results highlighted that the potential ecological risk of ICM-contained medical wastewater by chlorination with NH₄⁺ should not be neglected, and peracetic acid may be an environment-friendly alternative for the disinfection of wastewater containing ICM.

Removing emerging e-waste pollutant DTFPB by synchronized oxidation-adsorption Fenton technology

Liquid crystal monomers (LCMs), an emerging group of organic pollutants related to electronic waste, have been frequently detected from various environmental matrices, including landfill leachate. The persistence of LCMs requires robust technology for remediation. The objectives of this study were to evaluate the feasibility, performance and mechanism of the remediation of a typical LCM 4-[difluoro(3,4,5-trifluorophenoxy)methyl]- 3,5-difluoro-4'-propylbiphenyl (DTFPB) via synchronized oxidation-adsorption (SOA) Fenton technology and verify its application in DTFPB-contaminated leachate. The SOA Fenton system could effectively degrade 93.5% of DTFPB and 5.6% of its total organic carbon (TOC_DTFPB) by hydroxyl radical oxidation (molar ratio of Fe²⁺ to H₂O₂ of 1/4 and pH 2.5-3.0) following a pseudo-first-order model under 0.378 h^-1. Additionally, synchronized adsorption of DTFPB and its degradation intermediates by in situ resultant ferric particles via hydrophobic interaction, complexation, and coprecipitation contributed to almost 100% of DTFPB and 33.4% of TOC_DTFPB removal. Three possible degradation pathways involving eight products were proposed, and hydrophobic interactions might drive the adsorption process. It was first confirmed that the SOA Fenton system exhibited good performance in eliminating DTFPB and byproducts from landfill leachate. This study provides new insights into the potential of the Fenton process for the treatment of emerging LCMs contamination in wastewater.

Artificial intelligence-aided preparation of perovskite SrFexZr1-xO3-δ catalysts for ozonation degradation of organic pollutant concentrated water after membrane treatment

Membrane technology has been widely used to treat wastewater from a variety of industries, but it also results in a large amount of concentrated wastewater containing organic pollutants after membrane treatment, which is challenging to decompose. Here in this work, a series of perovskite SrFe_xZr_1-xO_3-δ catalysts were prepared via a modified co-precipitation method and evaluated for catalytic ozone oxidative degradation of m-cresol. An artificial neural intelligence networks (ANN) model was employed to train the experimental data to optimize the preparation parameters of catalysts, with SrFe_0.13Zr_0.87O_3-δ being the optimal catalysts. The resultant catalysts before and after reduction were then thoroughly characterized and tested for m-cresol degradation. It was found that the co-doping of Fe and Zr at the B-site and the improvement of oxygen vacancies and oxygen active species by reduction dramatically increased TOC removal rates up to 5 times compared with ozone alone, with the conversion rate of m-cresol reaching 100%. We also proposed a possible mechanism for m-cresol degradation via investigating the intermediates using GC-MS, and confirmed the good versatility of the reduced SrFe_0.13Zr_0.87O_3-δ catalyst to remove other common organic pollutants in concentrated wastewater. This work demonstrates new prospects for the use of perovskite materials in wastewater treatment.

Removal of Iodine-Containing X-ray Contrast Media from Environment: The Challenge of a Total Mineralization

Iodinated X-ray contrast media (ICM) as emerging micropollutants have attracted considerable attention in recent years due to their high detected concentration in water systems. It results in environmental issues partly due to the formation of toxic by-products during the disinfection process in water treatment. Consequently, various approaches have been investigated by researchers in order to achieve ICM total mineralization. This review discusses the different methods that have been used to degrade them, with special attention to the mineralization yield and to the nature of formed by-products. The problem of pollution by ICM is discussed in the first part dedicated to the presence of ICM in the environment and its consequences. In the second part, the processes for ICM treatment including biological treatment, advanced oxidation/reductive processes, and coupled processes are reviewed in detail. The main results and mechanisms involved in each approach are described, and by-products identified during the different treatments are listed. Moreover, based on their efficiency and their cost-effectiveness, the prospects and process developments of ICM treatment are discussed.

Removal of carbamazepine, venlafaxine and iohexol from wastewater effluent using coupled microalgal-bacterial biofilm

We evaluated the removal capacity of a coupled microalgal-bacterial biofilm (CMBB) to eliminate three recalcitrant pharmaceuticals. The CMBB's efficiency, operating at different biofilm concentrations, with or without light, was compared and analyzed to correlate these parameters to pharmaceutical removal and their effect on the microorganism community. Removal rates changed with changing pharmaceutical and biofilm concentrations: higher biofilm concentrations presented higher removal. Removal of 82-94% venlafaxine and 18-51% carbamazepine was obtained with 5 days of CMBB treatment. No iohexol removal was observed. Light, microorganism composition, and dissolved oxygen concentration are essential parameters governing the removal of pharmaceuticals and ammonia. Chlorophyll concentration increased with time, even in the dark. Three bacterial phyla were dominant: Proteobacteria, Bacteroidetes and Firmicutes. The dominant eukaryotic supergroups were Archaeplastida, Excavata and SAR. A study of the microorganisms' community indicated that not only do the species in the biofilm play an important role; environment, concentration and interactions among them are also important. CMBB has the potential to provide low-cost and sustainable treatment for wastewater and recalcitrant pharmaceutical removal. The microenvironments on the biofilm created by the microalgae and bacteria improved treatment efficiency.

Prediction of pharmaceutical and personal care products elimination during heterogeneous catalytic ozonation via chemical kinetic model

Prediction of the removal of pollutants is important for the process design and optimization of wastewater treatment. In this study, the heterogeneous catalytic ozonation chemical kinetic model based on reaction kinetic constants between O₃ (and •OH) and pollutants, and pseudo-first order rate constants for pollutant adsorption was established. The model parameters were obtained via O₃ and p-chlorobenzonic acid decay curves, and adsorption kinetic experiments, respectively. Higher •OH exposures were obtained at the expense of lower O₃ exposures during catalytic ozonation compared to simple ozonation. Importantly, the experimentally measured and model-predicted removal ratios correlated well in all reaction systems, with correlation coefficients above 0.950 in synthetic solution and 0.893-0.979 in secondary effluent. Furthermore, the model revealed that pollutants were degraded mainly by O₃ and/or •OH oxidation during catalytic ozonation, while adsorption of pollutants on catalysts contributed negligibly. Hence, the degradation ratios of pollutants could be satisfactorily predicted using the simplified model based only on the O₃ and •OH exposures in the heterogeneous catalytic ozonation systems with low adsorption capacity catalysts.

Toward efficient electrocatalytic degradation of iohexol using active anodes: A laser-made versus commercial anodes

The X-ray iodinated contrast medium iohexol is frequently detected in aquatic environments due to its high persistence and the inefficiency of its degradation by conventional wastewater treatments. Hence, the challenge faced in this study is the development of an alternative electrochemical treatment using active anodes. We investigate the oxidation of iohexol (16.42 mg L^-1) using different operating conditions, focusing on the role of different mixed metal oxide anodes in the treatment efficiency. The electrocatalytic efficiency of the Ti/RuO₂-TiO₂ anode prepared using a CO₂ laser heating and an ionic liquid is compared with Ti/RuO₂-TiO₂-IrO₂ and Ti/IrO₂-Ta₂O₅ commercial anodes. The hypochlorite ions generated by the anodes are also analyzed. The effect of the electrolyte composition (NaCl, Na₂SO₄, and NaClO₄) and current density (15, 30, and 50 mA cm^-2) on the iohexol degradation is also studied. The Ti/RuO₂-TiO₂ laser-made anode is more efficient than the commercial anodes. After optimizing experimental parameters, this anode removes 95.5% of iohexol in 60 min and displays the highest kinetic rate (0.059 min^-1) with the lowest energy consumption per order (0.21 kWh m^-3order^-1), using NaCl solution as the electrolyte and applying 15 mA cm^-2. Additionally, iohexol-intensified groundwater was used to compare the efficiency of anodes. The Ti/RuO₂-TiO₂ is also more efficient in removing the organic charge from the real water matrix (21.7% TOC) than the commercial anodes. Notably, the iohexol removal achieved is higher than all electrochemical treatments already reported using state-of-the-art non-active anodes in lower electrolysis time. Therefore, data from this study indicate that the electrochemical degradation of iohexol using the Ti/RuO₂-TiO₂ anode is efficient and has excellent cost-effectiveness; thus, it is a promising approach in the degradation of iohexol from wastewater. Furthermore, the Ti/RuO₂-TiO₂ active anode is competitive and can be an excellent option for treating effluents contaminated with recalcitrant organic compounds such as iohexol.

N-nitrosodimethylamine formation during oxidation of N,N-dimethylhydrazine compounds by peroxymonosulfate: Kinetics, reactive species, mechanism and influencing factors

This study found that peroxymonosulfate (PMS) oxidation without activation has the potential to generate a suspected human carcinogen, N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA), in water containing N,N-dimethylhydrazine compounds. Considerable amounts of NDMA formed from three compounds by PMS oxidation were observed. 1,1,1',1'-Tetramethyl-4,4'-(methylene-di-p-phenylene) disemicarbazide (TMDS), which is an industrial antiyellowing agent and light stabilizer, was used as a representative to elucidate the kinetics, transformation products, mechanism and NDMA formation pathways of PMS oxidation. TMDS degradation and NDMA formation involved direct PMS oxidation and singlet oxygen (¹O₂) oxidation. The oxidation by PMS/¹O₂ was pH-dependent, which was related to the pH-dependent characteristics of the reactive oxygen species and intermediates. The degradation mechanism of TMDS mainly included the side chain cleavage, dealkylation, and O-addition. NDMA was generated from TMDS mainly via O-addition and 1,1-dimethylhydrazine (UDMH) generation. The cleavage of amide nitrogen in O-addition products and primary amine nitrogen in UDMH are likely the key steps in NDMA generation. The results emphasized that the formation of harmful by-products should be taken into account when assessing the feasibility of PMS oxidation.

Enhancing catalytic ozonation activity of MCM-41 via one-step incorporating fluorine and iron: The interfacial reaction induced by hydrophobic sites and Lewis acid sites

Fe-MCM-41 had been widely used as ozonation catalyst, however, the existence of large amount of hydrophilic silanol hindered its interfacial reaction with O₃ and pollutants. To solve this problem, F-Fe-MCM-41 was synthesized by co-doping F and Fe into the framework of MCM-41 to replace silanol with Si-F groups through a one-step hydrothermal method. F introduced hydrophobic sites which contributed to more ibuprofen (IBP) chemisorption on the surface of F-Fe-MCM-41. Moreover, doping F also enhanced the acidity, which accelerated O₃ decomposition into •OH. F-Fe-MCM-41/O₃ exhibited notably activity with 96.6% IBP removal efficiency within 120 min, while only 78.5% and 80.9% in O₃ alone and Fe-MCM-41/O₃, respectively. Surface Lewis acid sites and metal hydroxyl groups were considered as important factors for O₃ activation and •OH generation. F-Fe-MCM-41 exhibited excellent catalytic performance under acidic and alkaline conditions. Comparative experiments revealed that F doping improved the interfacial reaction, especially the interfacial electron transfer, which resulted in the high catalytic activity of F-Fe-MCM-41. F-Fe-MCM-41 possessed good stability and reusability, with only 5.7% decline for IBP removal in five successive cycles. Furthermore, the possible degradation path of IBP was proposed according to DFT calculation and GC-MS analysis.

Enhanced degradation of iohexol in water by CuFe2O4 activated peroxymonosulfate: Efficiency, mechanism and degradation pathway

Iohexol as an iodinated X-ray contrast agent is widely used, and it is the potential precursor for toxic iodinated disinfection by-products in the disinfection process. In this study, a series of CuFe₂O₄ catalysts were prepared by sol-gel method with different molar ratios of total metal cations to citric acid ([Meⁿ⁺]_T/CA) and employed as heterogeneous catalysts to activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for the removal of iohexol. The catalysts were characterized by various technologies, and the effect of [Meⁿ⁺]_T/CA molar ratio on the catalysts' properties was explored. The CuFe₂O₄ synthesized with [Meⁿ⁺]_T/CA molar ratio of 1:1 showed the best catalytic activity to PMS, and 95.0% of 1.0 mg/L iohexol was removed within 15 min by using 50 mg/L CuFe₂O₄ and 20 mg/L PMS. The quenching experiment and electron spin resonance (ESR) spectra indicated the generation of SO₄^- and OH in the CuFe₂O₄/PMS system, and the quantity experiments revealed that the generation concentration of SO₄^- was ten times higher than that of OH. The generation mechanism of SO₄^- and ·OH were investigated by ATR-FTIR and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) spectra. The effects of catalyst dosage, PMS and iohexol concentration on the removal of iohexol were studied, and various water matrix factors including solution pH, natural organic matter (NOM) concentration and inorganic ions were also considered. Based on the twelve intermediate products of iohexol detected by UPLC-QTOF/MS, the degradation pathway was proposed. The high catalytic activity and reusability of CuFe₂O₄ indicated that CuFe₂O₄ activating PMS is an effective and sustainable way for the treatment of iohexol.

Preparation, characterization, and applications of Fe-based catalysts in advanced oxidation processes for organics removal: A review

Fe-based catalysts as low-cost, high-efficiency, and non-toxic materials display superior catalytic performances in activating hydrogen peroxide, persulfate (PS), peracetic acid (PAA), percarbonate (PC), and ozone to degrade organic contaminants in aqueous solutions. They mainly include ferrous salts, zero-valent iron, iron-metal composites, iron sulfides, iron oxyhydroxides, iron oxides, and supported iron-based catalysts, which have been widely applied in advanced oxidation processes (AOPs). However, there is lack of a comprehensive review systematically reporting their synthesis, characterization, and applications. It is imperative to evaluate the catalytic performances of various Fe-based catalysts in diverse AOPs systems and reveal the activation mechanisms of different oxidants by Fe-based catalysts. This work detailedly summarizes the synthesis methods and characterization technologies of Fe-based catalysts. This paper critically evaluates the catalytic performances of Fe-based catalysts in diverse AOPs systems. The effects of solution pH, reaction temperature, coexisting ions, oxidant concentration, catalyst dosage, and external energy on the degradation of organic contaminants in the Fe-based catalyst/oxidant systems and the stability of Fe-based catalysts are also discussed. The activation mechanisms of various oxidants and the degradation pathways of organic contaminants in the Fe-based catalyst/oxidant systems are revealed by a series of novel detection methods and characterization technologies. Future research prospects on the potential preparation means of Fe-based catalysts, practical applications, assistive technologies, and impact in AOPs are proposed.

Catalytic ozonation of chloramphenicol with manganese-copper oxides/maghemite in solution: Empirical kinetics model, degradation pathway, catalytic mechanism, and antibacterial activity

The composite material of manganese-copper oxide/maghemite (Mn_xCu_yO_z/γ-Fe₂O₃) was synthesized by the co-precipitation-calcination method. With the initial concentration of 0.2 g/L Mn_xCu_yO_z/γ-Fe₂O₃ and 10 mg/L O₃, the chloramphenicol (CAP, 10 mg/L) could be completely degraded, which was about 2.22 times of that treated with ozonation alone. The contribution of O₃ and hydroxyl radical (•OH) for CAP degradation in the catalytic process was 6.9% and 93.1%, respectively. According to the effects of catalyst dosage, ozone dosage, and pH on the catalytic performance of Mn_xCu_yO_z/γ-Fe₂O₃, a predictive empirical model was developed for the ozonation with the Mn_xCu_yO_z/γ-Fe₂O₃ system. The HCO₃^-/CO₃^2- and phosphates in solution could inhibit the degradation of CAP with the inhibition ratios 8.45% and 13.8%, respectively. The HCO₃^-/CO₃^2- could compete with CAP and react with •OH, and the phosphates were considered as poisons for catalysts by blocking the surface active sites to inhibit ozone decomposition. The intermediates and possible degradation pathways were detected and proposed. The catalytic ozonation could effectively control the toxicity of the treated solution, but the toxicity was still not negligible. Furthermore, Mn_xCu_yO_z/γ-Fe₂O₃ could be easily and efficiently separated from the reaction system with an external magnet, and it possessed excellent reusability and stability.

Alleviation of Ultrafiltration Membrane Fouling by ClO2 Pre-Oxidation: Fouling Mechanism and Interface Characteristics

In order to alleviate membrane fouling and improve removal efficiency, a series of pretreatment technologies were applied to the ultrafiltration process. In this study, ClO₂ was used as a pre-oxidation strategy for the ultrafiltration (UF) process. Humic acid (HA), sodium alginate (SA), and bovine serum albumin (BSA) were used as three typical organic model foulants, and the mixture of the three substances was used as a representation of simulated natural water. The dosages of ClO₂ were 0.5, 1, 2, 4, and 8 mg/L, with 90 min pre-oxidation. The results showed that ClO₂ pre-oxidation at low doses (1–2 mg/L) could alleviate the membrane flux decline caused by humus, polysaccharides, and simulated natural water, but had a limited alleviating effect on the irreversible resistance of the membrane. The interfacial free energy analysis showed that the interaction force between the membrane and the simulated natural water was also repulsive after the pre-oxidation, indicating that ClO₂ pre-oxidation was an effective way to alleviate cake layer fouling by reducing the interaction between the foulant and the membrane. In addition, ClO₂ oxidation activated the hidden functional groups in the raw water, resulting in an increase in the fluorescence value of humic analogs, but had a good removal effect on the fluorescence intensity of BSA. Furthermore, the membrane fouling fitting model showed that ClO₂, at a low dose (1 mg/L), could change the mechanism of membrane fouling induced by simulated natural water from standard blocking and cake layer blocking to critical blocking. Overall, ClO₂ pre-oxidation was an efficient pretreatment strategy for UF membrane fouling alleviation, especially for the fouling control of HA and SA at low dosages.

UV/ peroxymonosulfate process for degradation of chloral hydrate: Pathway and the role of radicals

In this study, kinetics, influencing factors and potential mechanisms involved in the degradation of chloral hydrate (CH) by UV/peroxymonosulfate (PMS) process were demonstrated. The degradation rate of CH could reach 89.6% by UV₂₅₄/PMS process, significantly exceeding UV₃₀₀/PMS (0.7%), UV₃₅₀/PMS (6.3%), UV₂₅₄ direct photolysis (9.0%) and PMS alone (0.0%) processes. CH degradation in UV₂₅₄/PMS system followed pseudo first-order degradation kinetics with an apparent rate constant of 0.186 min^-1, which was suppressed by Cl^- and HCO₃^-. The optimal pH for CH degradation was around 5.0. Direct mineralization accounted for the CH degradation in UV/PMS system. Interestingly, the addition of PMS at the neutral condition before UV irradiation transferred CH into trichloroacetic acid (TCAA). The transformation efficiency of CH into TCAA at 10 min was enhanced from 2.17%-40.38% with the elevation of initial pH from 7.0-8.0. The subsequent exposure of UV lamps ceased the transformation of CH into TCAA and facilitated the direct mineralization of CH, but it did not work in the refractory TCAA degradation. Finally, it was revealed that HO predominantly participated CH degradation in UV/PMS process, while O₂^- was responsible for the transformation of CH into TCAA by addition of PMS before UV irradiation.
