Nanocellulose-stabilized nanocomposites for effective Hg(II) removal and detection: a comprehensive review

Mercury pollution, with India ranked as the world's second-largest emitter, poses a critical environmental and public health challenge and underscores the need for rigorous research and effective mitigation strategies. Nanocellulose is derived from cellulose, the most abundant natural polymer on earth, and stands out as an excellent choice for mercury ion remediation due to its remarkable adsorption capacity, which is attributed to its high specific surface area and abundant functional groups, enabling efficient Hg(II) ion removal from contaminated water sources. This review paper investigates the compelling potential of nanocellulose as a scavenging tool for Hg(II) ion contamination. The comprehensive examination encompasses the fundamental attributes of nanocellulose, its diverse fabrication techniques, and the innovative development methods of nanocellulose-based nanocomposites. The paper further delves into the mechanisms that underlie Hg removal using nanocellulose, as well as the integration of nanocellulose in Hg detection methodologies, and also acknowledges the substantial challenges that lie ahead. This review aims to pave the way for sustainable solutions in mitigating Hg contamination using nanocellulose-based nanocomposites to address the global context of this environmental concern.

Nanocellulose: Structure, modification, biodegradation and applications in agriculture as slow/controlled release fertilizer, superabsorbent, and crop protection: A review

This review investigates the potential of nanocellulose in agriculture, encompassing its structure, synthesis, modification, and applications. Our investigation of the characteristics of nanocellulose includes a comprehensive classification of its structure. Various mechanical, chemical and enzymatic synthesis techniques are evaluated, each offering distinct possibilities. The central role of surface functionalization is thoroughly examined. In particular, we are evaluating the conventional production of nanocellulose, thus contributing to the novelty. This review is a pioneering effort to comprehensively explore the use of nanocellulose in slow and controlled release fertilizers, revolutionizing nutrient management and improving crop productivity with reduced environmental impact. Additionally, our work uniquely integrates diverse applications of nanocellulose in agriculture, ranging from slow-release fertilizers, superabsorbent cellulose hydrogels for drought stress mitigation, and long-lasting crop protection via nanocellulose-based seed coatings. The study ends by identifying challenges and unexplored opportunities in the use of nanocellulose in agriculture. This review makes an innovative contribution by being the first comprehensive study to examine the multiple applications of nanocellulose in agriculture, including slow-release and controlled-release fertilizers.

Propylene glycol-mixed steam enhanced extraction for an efficient and sustainable remediation of PAHs-contaminated soil

An innovative thermal desorption method, propylene glycol (PG)-mixed steam enhanced extraction, is proposed for a highly efficient remediation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs)-contaminated soil. It is found that injecting PG-mixed steam into soil column could obtain > 99% removal efficiencies of PAHs either for the pyrene-spiked soil, or for the contaminated field soil with high-molecular-weight PAHs. PG is a safe and low-cost dihydric alcohol with a boiling point higher than water. When the PG-mixed steam penetrated the contaminated soil, the PG vapor preferentially condensed to form a hot liquid with concentrated PG (e.g., from 30 wt% PG in gas phase to 90 wt% PG in the liquid phase), which would significantly solubilize the PAHs and enhance their desorption from soils. The results also revealed that the effluents derived from the PG-mixed steam could be purified by removing the desorbed PAHs using a simple coagulation treatment, and the recovered PG solution could be reused. The plant assay using wheat seeds showed that the remediated soil had a good regreening potential. Our results demonstrate that PG-mixed steam injection is a promising thermal desorption method for an efficient and sustainable remediation of PAHs-contaminated soil.

Transport of Microplastic and Dispersed Oil Co-contaminants in the Marine Environment

Microplastics (MPs) and oil pollution are major concerns in oceans. Although their coexistence in oceans and the associated MP-oil-dispersant agglomerates (MODAs) have been reported, limited attention is given to the behavior of the co-contaminants. This study investigated MODA transport in a simulated ocean system and explored related mechanisms under various oil types, salinities, and mineral concentrations. We found that more than 90% of the heavy oil-formed MODAs stayed at the seawater surface, while the light oil-formed MODAs were widely distributed throughout the seawater column. The increased salinity promoted MODAs formed by 7 and 90 μm MPs to transport from the seawater surface to the column. This was elucidated by the Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek theory as more MODAs formed under higher salinities and dispersants kept them stable in the seawater column. Minerals facilitated the sinking of large MP-formed MODAs (e.g., 40 μm) as minerals were adsorbed on the MODA surface, but their impact on small MP-formed MODAs (e.g., 7 μm) was negligible. A MODA-mineral system was proposed to explain their interaction. Rubey's equation was recommended to predict the sinking velocity of MODAs. This study is the first attempt to reveal MODA transport. Findings will contribute to the model development to facilitate their environmental risk evaluation in oceans.

Environmental safety of nanotechnologies: The eco-design of manufactured nanomaterials for environmental remediation

Nanosafety is paramount considering the risks associated with manufactured nanomaterials (MNMs) whose implications could outweigh their advantages for environmental applications. Although nanotechnology-based solutions to implement pollution control, remediation and prevention are incremental with clear benefits for public health and Earth' natural ecosystems, nanoremediation is having a setback due to the risks associated with the safety of MNMs for humans and the environment. MNMs are diverse, work differently and bionano-interactions occurring upon environmental exposure will guide their fate and hazardous outcomes. Here we propose a new ecologically-based design strategy (eco-design) having its roots in green nanoscience and LCA that will ground on an Ecological Risk Assessment approach, which introduces the evaluation of MNMs' ecotoxicity along with their performances and efficacies at the design stage. As such, the proposed eco-design strategy will allow recognition and design-out since the very beginning of material synthesis, those hazardous peculiar features that can be hazardous to living beings and the natural environment. A more ecologically sound eco-design strategy in which nanosafety is conceptually included in MNMs design will sustain safer nanotechnologies including those for the environment as remediation by leveraging any risks for humans and natural ecosystems.

Surfactant recovery and efficient separation of PAHs from surfactant solutions by low-cost waste activated sludge and two-stage design optimization

The treatment and surfactant recovery of soil washing/flushing effluent containing high levels of surfactants and organic pollutants are critical for the surfactant-assisted remediation of soils and waste management due to their complexity and high-potential risks. Combination of waste activated sludge material (WASM) and a kinetic-based two-stage system design was introduced in this study as a novel strategy for the separation of phenanthrene and pyrene from Tween 80 solutions. The results showed that WASM can effectively sorb phenanthrene and pyrene with high affinities (K_d) of 2325.5 L·kg^-1 and 9911.2 L·kg^-1, respectively. This allowed a high-level recovery of Tween 80 of 90.47 ± 1.86%, with selectivity of up to 69.7. In addition, a two-stage design was constructed, and the results showed an improved reaction time (approximately 5% of equilibrium time in conventional single-stage process) and increased the separation levels of phenanthrene or pyrene from Tween 80 solutions. For instance, the minimal total operating time for the sorption of 99% pyrene from 1.0 g·L^-1 Tween 80 was only 23.0 min in the two-stage process compared to that of 480 min with a 71.9% removal level in the single-stage system. Results indicated that the combination of low-cost waste WASH and two-stage design was a high-efficiency and time-saving way to recover surfactants from soil washing effluents.

Green remediation of cadmium-contaminated soil by cellulose nanocrystals

Cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) were used as a novel, green eluent to remediate Cd-contaminated soil in this study. The influence of washing conditions on the removal of Cd, including CNC concentration, pH value, liquid/solid (L/S) ratio, contact time and temperature were investigated. The effect of CNC remediation of Cd-contaminated soil on soil health and the possible remediation mechanism were also explored. The results showed that CNC concentration, pH value and contact time had a significant effect on the removal efficiency of Cd. CNC rapidly removed heavy metals in soil within 30 min. When the pH value of the eluent was 9.0, the removal efficiency of Cd could reach 86.3 %. The eluent mainly removed exchangeable and reducible fractions of Cd, which could effectively reduce the bioavailability of heavy metals. CNC washing had no negative effects on seed growth, species abundance and Shannon index. C-O, -COO^- groups on CNC played an important role in the reaction between CNC and soil Cd, and other oxygen-containing functional groups on CNC could also assist in adsorption, ion exchange and chemical complexation processes. Therefore, cellulose nanocrystals had the potential to remediate heavy metal-contaminated soils in a green and efficient manner.

Biochar and flow interruption control spatio-temporal dynamics of fecal coliform retention under subsurface drip irrigation

Applying wastewater in subsurface drip irrigation helps address water shortage in arid and semi-arid environments. Microbial contamination may result, but soil amendments such as biochar could help protect soil and water resources. To improve understanding, this study investigated spatio-temporal dynamics of fecal coliform retention in a biochar-treated soil under subsurface drip irrigation. Two dripper discharges rates of 2 and 4 l hr^-1 containing fecal coliforms (3.99 ± 1.4 × 10⁵ CFU ml^-1), three maximum allowable depletion levels (MAD; 30, 50, and 70%), and three biochar levels (0, 0.5 and 1%, w/w) were used. The lysimeters were filled with biochar-treated soil and had drippers located at 20 cm depth. Three irrigations were performed for either Q, and soil samples were taken after each irrigation at different times at the lysimeter centre at 5, 15, 25, and 50 cm depths and at the edge at 20 cm depth (labeled 20 L). Soils containing biochar had much greater recovered coliforms from soil than the unamended controls. The greatest retention was at 15 and 25 cm depth (within 5 cm of the dripper) for 1% biochar, with the recovered cells about 70% for 2 l hr^-1 discharge and 60% for 4 l hr^-1 discharge. The greatest concentration occurred immediately after irrigation, but over 10 days the number of coliforms gradually decreased and inactivated. Therefore, the coliform residence time, soil depth, and biochar rate all influenced coliform retention if the discharge rates and MADs were considered. We recommend slower subsurface dripper rates with high MAD and biochar amendment to minimize fecal coliform contamination from subsurface field wastewater irrigation.

A pH-responsive phosphoprotein washing fluid for the removal of phenanthrene from contaminated peat moss in the cold region

Oil pollution is one of the major environmental concerns in the petroleum industry. In this study, a cheap food-grade sodium caseinate (NaCas) was used as a pH-responsive washing fluid in the remediation of phenanthrene (PHE) affected peat moss. The effects of environmental factors on the removal of PHE were systematically investigated. The results showed that increasing NaCas concentration and washing temperature improved the PHE mobilization, while high salinity and humic acid dosage displayed a negative effect. The factorial analysis revealed that three individual factors and two interactions exhibited significant effects on the washing performance. Due to the pH-responsive property of NaCas, the turbidity, total organic carbon (TOC), and chemical oxygen demand (COD) of the washing effluent were remarkably reduced by simply adjusting the solution acidity, improving the practical application of such a washing method. Significantly, the toxicity modeling proved that NaCas can reduce the binding energy between PHE and superoxide dismutase (SOD) of the selected marine organism, and thus relieve the toxicity of PHE to the organisms. Given these advantages, NaCas-assisted washing can be a viable option for the remediation of contaminated peat moss.

Continuing progress in the field of two-dimensional correlation spectroscopy (2D-COS): Part III. Versatile applications

In this review, the comprehensive summary of two-dimensional correlation spectroscopy (2D-COS) for the last two years is covered. The remarkable applications of 2D-COS in diverse fields using many types of probes and perturbations for the last two years are highlighted. IR spectroscopy is still the most popular probe in 2D-COS during the last two years. Applications in fluorescence and Raman spectroscopy are also very popularly used. In the external perturbations applied in 2D-COS, variations in concentration, pH, and relative compositions are dramatically increased during the last two years. Temperature is still the most used effect, but it is slightly decreased compared to two years ago. 2D-COS has been applied to diverse systems, such as environments, natural products, polymers, food, proteins and peptides, solutions, mixtures, nano materials, pharmaceuticals, and others. Especially, biological and environmental applications have significantly emerged. This survey review paper shows that 2D-COS is an actively evolving and expanding field.

A review for recent advances on soil washing remediation technologies

Contaminated soils have caused serious harm to human health and the ecological environment due to the high toxicity of organic and inorganic pollutants, which has attracted extensive attention in recent years. Because of its low cost, simple operation and high efficiency, soil washing technology is widely used to permanently remove various pollutants in contaminated soils and is considered to be the most promising remediation technology. This review summarized the recent developments in the field of soil washing technology and discusses the application of conventional washing agents, advanced emerging washing agents, the recycling of washing effluents and the combination of soil washing and other remediation technologies. Overall, the findings provide a comprehensive understanding of soil washing technology and suggest some potential improvements from a scientific and practical point of view.

Development of a calcium alginate-cellulose nanocrystal-based coating to reduce the impact of oil spills on shorelines

It is well known that oil stranded on shoreline substrates can be difficult to remove and cause serious environmental effects. To address this issue, a calcium alginate-cellulose nanocrystal (CA-CNC)-based coating with a unique surface structure and superhydrophobic properties was developed to reduce the extent of shoreline oiling. The results of batch washing test showed that not only did the introduction of CNC not reduce the oil removal efficiency; it also improved the environmental stability of the coating to resist the effects associated with seawater immersion and erosion (especially in the case of 0.4 wt% of CNC). The oil-repellent performance of the coated gravels implied that both oscillation time and oil concentration had almost no effects on the amount of adhered oil. Assessment of oiling prevention based on the laboratory shoreline tank simulator proved the coated gravel performed very well as more oil floated and less oil remained on substrates and penetrated into the subsurface. Biotoxicity analysis showed that the coating powders reduced impacts on the toxicity of the oil to algae at low doses. There is a good potential for the use of this CA-CNC based coating technique to improve shoreline oil spill response.

Halophilic Martelella sp. AD-3 enhanced phenanthrene degradation in a bioaugmented activated sludge system through syntrophic interaction

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are a group of common recalcitrant pollutant in industrial saline wastewater that raised significant concerns, whereas traditional activated sludge (AS) has limited tolerance to high salinity and PAHs toxicity, restricting its capacity to degrade PAHs. It is therefore urgent to develop a bioaugmented sludge (BS) system to aid in the effective degradation of these types of compounds under saline condition. In this study, a novel bioaugmentation strategy was developed by using halophilic Martelella sp. AD-3 for effectively augmented phenanthrene (PHE) degradation under 3% salinity. It was found that a 0.5∼1.5% (w/w) ratio of strain AD-3 to activated sludge was optimal for achieving high PHE degradation activity of the BS system with degradation rates reaching 2.2 mg⋅gVSS^-1⋅h^-1, nearly 25 times that of the AS system. Although 1-hydroxy-2-naphthoic acid (1H2N) was accumulated obviously, the mineralization of PHE was more complete in the BS system. Reads-based metagenomic coupled metatranscriptomic analysis revealed that the expression values of ndoB, encoding a dioxygenase associated with PHE ring-cleavage, was 5600-fold higher in the BS system than in the AS system. Metagenome assembly showed the members of the Corynebacterium and Alcaligenes genera were abundant in the strain AD-3 bioaugmented BS system with expression of 10.3±1.8% and 1.9±0.26%, respectively. Moreover, phdI and nahG accused for metabolism of 1H2N have been annotated in both above two genera. Degradation assays of intermediates of PHE confirmed that the activated sludge actually possessed considerable degradation capacity for downstream intermediates of PHE including 1H2N. The degradation capacity ratio of 1H2N to PHE was 87% in BS system, while it was 26% in strain AD-3. These results indicated that strain AD-3 contributed mainly in transforming PHE to 1H2N in BS system, while species in activated sludge utilized 1H2N as substrate to grow, thus establishing a syntrophic interaction with strain AD-3 and achieving the complete mineralization of PHE. Long-term continuous experiment confirmed a stable PHE removal efficiency of 93% and few 1H2N accumulation in BS SBR system. This study demonstrated an effective bioaugmented strategy for the bioremediation of saline wastewater containing PAHs.

Investigation into the impact of aged microplastics on oil behavior in shoreline environments

Understanding the interactions between oil and other particles in shoreline can help determine the environmental risk and cleanup strategy after oil spill. Nevertheless, far less has been known regarding the impact of aged MPs on oil behavior in the shoreline environment. In this study, the aging course of polyethylene (PE) in shaking seawater and ultraviolet (UV) radiation conditions was investigated. The seawater aging mainly affected the physical properties of MPs, increasing its surface pores and hydrophilicity. UV aging significantly affected both the physical and chemical properties of MPs, which increased its hydrophilicity and crystallinity, decreased its mean particle size and introduced oxygen-containing functional groups onto MPs. The two-dimensional correlation spectroscopy (2D COS) analysis confirmed the evolution of oxygen-containing functional groups from C-O to CO. The effects of aged MPs on oil behavior in water-sand system were further explored. The oil remaining percentages were non-linearly changed with the increasing aging degree of MPs. The particle size of the aqueous phase after washing was inversely related to the oil remaining percentage. Further FTIR analysis revealed that C-O and C-H functional groups played an important role in the process of oil adsorbed on MPs.
