Generation of hydroxyl radicals during photodegradation of chloroacetic acids by 254 nm ultraviolet: A special degradation process revealed by a holistic radical determination methodology

ZnO/g-C3N4 photocatalyst activated by low-pressure ultraviolet for restoring the SWASV signals: A fast pretreatment method for electrochemically detecting Cd2+ and Pb2+ in soil extracts

Soil organic matter (SOM) significantly impacts the detection accuracy of Cd2+ and Pb2+ using square wave anodic stripping voltammetry (SWASV) due to the complexation of SOM to heavy metal ions (HMIs), thereby attenuating SWASV signals. This study explored an effective pretreatment method that combined low-pressure ultraviolet (LPUV) photolysis with the ZnO/g-C3N4 photocatalyst, activating the photocatalyst to generate highly oxidative •OH radicals and O2•- radicals, which effectively disrupted this complexation, consequently restoring the electroactivity of HMIs and achieving high-fidelity SWASV signals. The parameters of the LPUV-ZnO/g-C3N4 photocatalytic system were meticulously optimized, including the pH of photolysis, duration of photolysis, g-C3N4 mass fraction, and concentration of the photocatalyst. Furthermore, the ZnO/g-C3N4 photocatalyst was thoroughly characterized, with an in-depth investigation on the synergistic interaction between ZnO and g-C3N4 and the mechanisms contributing to the restoration of SWASV signals. This synergistic interaction effectively separated charge carriers and reduced charge transfer resistance, enabling photogenerated electrons (e-) from the conduction band of g-C3N4 to be quickly transferred to the conduction band of ZnO, preventing the recombination of e- and hole (h+) and generating more radicals to disrupt complexation and restore the SWASV signals. Finally, the analysis of HMIs in real soil extracts using the proposed pretreatment method demonstrated high detection accuracy of 94.9% for Cd2+ and 99.8% for Pb2+, which validated the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed method in environmental applications.

Determining wavelength-dependent quantum yields of photodegradation: importance of experimental setup and reference values for actinometers

Accurate quantum yields are crucial for modeling photochemical reactions in natural and engineered treatment systems. Quantum yields are usually determined using a single representative light source such as xenon lamps to mimic sunlight or UVC light for water treatment. However, photodegradation modeling can be improved by understanding the wavelength dependence of quantum yields and the potential errors introduced by the experimental setup. In this study, we investigated the effects of experimental setup on measured quantum yields using four photoreactor systems and up to 11 different light sources. When using a calibrated spectroradiometer to measure incident irradiance on an open solution surface, apparent quantum yields were up to two times higher if light reflection and light screening were not accounted for in the experimental setup. When the experimental setup was optimized to allow for accurate irradiance measurements, quantum yields were reproducible across photoreactors. The optimized experimental setup was then used to determine quantum yields of uridine, atrazine, p-nitroanisole (PNA), sulfamethoxazole, and diclofenac across the UV spectrum. No significant wavelength dependence of quantum yields was observed for sulfamethoxazole and diclofenac, in contrast to wavelength-dependent quantum yields for uridine, atrazine, and PNA. These reference values can be used for determining wavelength-dependent quantum yields of other compounds of interest. Additionally, more accurate results can be obtained when using (1) an actinometer with similar light absorption and photoreactivity compared to that of the target chemical, (2) optically transparent actinometer solutions that can account for light reflection within reaction vessels, and (3) a quantum yield that corresponds to the spectrum of the selected light source.

Mechanistic insight into humic acid-enhanced sonophotocatalytic removal of 17β-estradiol: Formation and contribution of reactive intermediates

In this study, humic acid (HA) enhanced 17β-estradiol (17β-E2) degradation by Er3+-CdS/MoS2 (ECMS) was investigated under ultrasonic and light conditions. The degradation reaction rate of 17β-E2 was increased from (14.414 ± 0.315) × 10-3 min-1 to (122.677 ± 1.729) × 10-3 min-1 within 90 min sonophotocatalytic (SPC) reaction with the addition of HA. The results of quenching coupled with chemical probe experiments indicated that more reactive intermediates (RIs) including reactive oxygen species (ROSs) and triplet-excited states were generated in the HA-enhanced sonophotocatalytic system. The triplet-excited states of humic acid (3HA*), hydroxyl radical (•OH), and superoxide radical (•O2-) were the dominant RIs for 17β-E2 elimination. In addition, the energy- and electron-transfer process via coexisting HA also account for 12.86% and 29.24% contributions, respectively. The quantum yields of RIs in the SPC-ECMS-HA system followed the order of 3HA* > H2O2 > 1O2 > •O2-> •OH. Moreover, the spectral and fluorescence characteristics of HA were further analyzed during the sonophotocatalytic reaction process. The study expanded new insights into the comprehension of the effects of omnipresent coexisting HA and RIs formation for the removal of 17β-E2 during the sonophotocatalytic process.

Degradation and dechlorination of trichloroacetic acid induced by an in situ 222 nm KrCl* excimer radiation

Since the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic epidemic, the excessive usage of chlorinated disinfectants raised the substantial risks of disinfection by-products (DBPs) exposure. While several technologies may remove the typical carcinogenic DBPs, trichloroacetic acid (TCAA), their application for continuous treatment is limited due to their complexity and expensive or hazardous inputs. In this study, degradation and dechlorination of TCAA induced by an in situ 222 nm KrCl* excimer radiation as well as role of oxygen in the reaction pathway were investigated. Quantum chemical calculation methods were used to help predict the reaction mechanism. Experimental results showed that UV irradiance increased with increasing input power and decreased when the input power exceeded 60 W. Decomposition and dechlorination were simultaneously achieved, where around 78% of TCAA (0.62 mM) can be eliminated and 78% dechlorination within 200 min. Dissolved oxygen showed little effect on the TCAA degradation but greatly boosted the dechlorination as it can additionally generate hydroxyl radical (•OH) in the reaction process. Computational results showed that under 222 nm irradiation, TCAA was excited from S₀ to S₁ state and then decayed by internal crossing process to T₁ state, and a reaction without potential energy barrier followed, resulting in the breaking of C-Cl bond and finally returning to S₀ state. Subsequent C-Cl bond cleavage occurred by a barrierless •OH insertion and HCl elimination (27.9 kcal/mol). Finally, the •OH attacked (14.6 kcal/mol) the intermediate byproducts, leading to complete dechlorination and decomposition. The KrCl* excimer radiation has obvious advantages in terms of energy efficiency compared to other competitive methods. These results provide insight into the mechanisms of TCAA dechlorination and decomposition under KrCl* excimer radiation, as well as important information for guiding research toward direct and indirect photolysis of halogenated DBPs.

Photolysis and cytotoxicity of the potentially toxic composition of daylily flower: colchicine

The photolysis of colchicine under ultraviolet and visible light irradiation was studied by ultraviolet (UV) scanning and HPLC-MS. The photoproduct was proposed and the cytotoxicity change before and after irradiation was investigated. Results showed that both ultraviolet and visible light irradiation could effectively degrade colchicine into deacetamido-lumicolchicine. The process conformed to first-order kinetics, in which a high degradation rate (K = 0.5862 h^− 1) was observed when colchicine was dissolved in ethanol and irradiated by UV light. Cell viability and cell cycle studies proved that a photolysis treatment of colchicine could weaken the cytotoxicity effectively. Colchicine inhibited the division of BRL 3 A cells in G2/M phase with an IC₅₀ value of 0.48 µg/mL, while the toxic effect could be reduced significantly with IC₅₀ 2.1 µg/mL when colchicine was exposed to UV irradiation. Results are beneficial to the toxicity elimination of colchicine in the processing of daylily flower in food industry, and can also provide photochemistry reference for colchicine-related studies.

Removal of ofloxacin from wastewater by chloride electrolyte electro-oxidation: Analysis of the role of active chlorine and operating costs

Electro-oxidation (EO) has received increasing attention as an efficient and green method for removing pollutants from wastewater. Chloride anions (Cl^-), which commonly exist in wastewater, can act as an electrolyte for the EO process. However, the role of reactive chlorine species (RCS) generated near electrodes is often underestimated. In this study, we generated hydroxyl radicals (OH) and RCS in a boron-doped diamond (BDD) electrode system and investigated its degradation mechanism for ofloxacin (OFX) removal. The findings suggested that OFX degradation was dominated by OH existing near the anode in solution, with RCS playing a supporting role. Based on the produced intermediates, we proposed an OFX decomposition pathway. The biological toxicities of the intermediates were evaluated through the ECOSAR and T.E.S.T. procedure. Nearly half of the intermediates are less toxic than the parent compound. After optimizing the operating parameters by the response surface methodology, 20 mg/L OFX was almost completely degraded after 10 min of reaction in 1.45 g/L NaCl with a current density (j) of 18 mA/cm², and the total organic carbon was decreased by 30.55 %. The energy consumption and current efficiency were 0.648 kW·h/g_TOC and 8.65 %, respectively. Comparing the operating costs of the proposed and other EO methods, our method emerged as a viable new treatment scheme for similar polluted wastewaters. This study aims to comprehensively understand the potential application value of BDD electrodes in the treatment of Cl^- containing organic wastewater.

Total organic fluorine (TOF) analysis by completely converting TOF into fluoride with vacuum ultraviolet

Quantifying total organic fluorine (TOF) in water is vital in monitoring the occurrence and persistence of all fluorine-containing organic compounds in the environment, while currently most studies focus on analyzing individual fluorine-containing organic compounds. To fill the technology gap, we herein proposed to convert TOF completely into fluoride with vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) photolysis, followed by analysis of fluoride with ion chromatography. Results showed that the tailored VUV photoreactor achieved satisfying recoveries of fluorine from ten model TOF compounds not only in ultrapure water (83.9 ± 2.0% to 109.4 ± 0.8%) but also in real water samples (92.1 ± 1.0%-106.2 ± 15.7%). Unlike other ultraviolet-based processes that favor alkaline conditions, this VUV process preferred either neutral or acidic conditions to defluorinate selected compounds. While the mechanisms remain to be explored in the future, it has been evidenced that the photo-degradation and photo-defluorination rates of these TOF compounds varied significantly among compounds and operation conditions. The method obtained a method detection limit (MDL) of 0.15 μg-F/L, which is lower than the MDLs of many other TOF analytical methods, along with excellent calibration curves for concentrations ranging from 0.01 to 10.0 mg-F/L. Notably, minimizing fluoride in sample prior to photoconversion was necessary to avoid subtraction-induced errors for TOF measurement, especially when the fluoride/TOF ratio was high. The robust VUV is also green for sample pretreatment due to its unreliance of chemicals or additives.

Photodegradation of F-53B in aqueous solutions through an UV/Iodide system

Advanced reduction by strong reducing hydrated electrons is a promising approach to degrade per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). This research aimed to investigate the effectiveness of UV/Iodide system for 6:2 chlorinated polyfluorinated ether sulfonate (6:2 Cl-PFESA, F-53B) degradation in aqueous solutions. Results from this work demonstrated that UV irradiation with an addition of 0.3 mM KI resulted in 55.99% degradation of F-53B within 15 min and almost 100% within 2 h. The defluorination efficiency of F-53B in the UV/Iodide system was 2.6 times higher than that in the sole UV system after 2 h of irradiation. The degradation efficiency of F-53B was not significantly affected by air purging. The defluorination efficiency with air bubbling, however, was 14.57% lower than that with nitrogen purging. The photodegradation of F-53B in the UV/Iodide system could be well described by a pseudo-first-order kinetic model. Degradation rate constant of F-53B correlated positively with the initial concentration. At 20 μg/L, the pseudo-first-order rate constant was 5.641 × 10^-2 min^-1 and the half-life was 12.29 min. Higher initial concentration also required less energy input to achieve the same degradation efficiency. The detection and identification of degradation intermediates implied that destruction of F-53B started from dechlorination and followed by continuously "flaking off" CF₂ units.

Overlooked Formation of H2O2 during the Hydroxyl Radical-Scavenging Process When Using Alcohols as Scavengers

Hydroxyl radical (•OH) is an active species widely reported in studies across many scientific fields, and hence, its reliable analysis is vitally important. Currently, alcohols are commonly used as scavengers for •OH determination. However, the impacts of alcohols on the reliability of •OH detection remain unknown. In this study, we found that adding different types and different amounts of alcohols in water samples treated with ultraviolet irradiation undesirably produced substantial amounts of hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂), which is a known •OH precursor. This means that the conventional •OH determination method using alcohols is likely unreliable or even misleading. Through careful investigation, we revealed an overlooked reaction pathway during H₂O₂ and •OH transformations. Varying oxygen concentrations, pHs, alcohol dosages, and types altered H₂O₂ formation, which can affect •OH determination accuracy. Among alcohols, n-butanol is the best scavenger because it quenches •OH rapidly but re-forms little H₂O₂.
