Gamma-irradiation-induced molecular-weight distribution and complexation affinity of humic acid with Cs+, Sr2+, and Eu3

Layered metal sulfides with MaSbc- framework (M = Sb, In, Sn) as ion exchangers for the removal of Cs(Ⅰ) and Sr(Ⅱ) from radioactive effluents: a review

Nuclear power has emerged as a pivotal contributor to the global electricity supply owing to its high efficiency and low-carbon characteristics. However, the rapid expansion of the nuclear industry has resulted in the production of a significant amount of hazardous effluents that contain various radionuclides, such as 137Cs and 90Sr. Effectively removing 137Cs and 90Sr from radioactive effluents prior to discharge is a critical challenge. Layered metal sulfides exhibit significant potential as ion exchangers for the efficient uptake of Cs+ and Sr2+ from aqueous solutions owing to their open and exchangeable frameworks and the distinctive properties of their soft S2- ligands. This review provides a detailed account of layered metal sulfides with MaSb c- frameworks (M = Sb, In, Sn), including their synthesis methods, structural characteristics, and Cs+ and Sr2+ removal efficiencies. Furthermore, we highlight the advantages of layered metal sulfides, such as their relatively high ion exchange capacities, broad active pH ranges, and structural stability against acid and radiation, through a comparative evaluation with other conventional ion exchangers. Finally, we discuss the challenges regarding the practical application of layered metal sulfides in radionuclide scavenging.

Sorption of Cs+ and Eu3+ ions onto sedimentary rock in the presence of gamma-irradiated humic acid

The influence of humic acid (HA) and its radiological degradation on the sorption of Cs⁺ and Eu³⁺ by sedimentary rock (obtained from the Horonobe Underground Research Laboratory in Japan) was investigated to understand the sorption process of metal ions and humic substances. Aldrich HA solution was gamma-irradiated assuming a strong radiation from a highly radioactive waste to be disposed of in deep geological formations. Batch sorption experiments were performed to evaluate the effect of gamma-irradiated HA on the sorption of Cs⁺ and Eu³⁺ ions. The addition of non-irradiated HA weakened the Eu sorption because of the lower sorption of the negatively charged Eu-HA complexes compared with free Eu ions. The sorption of Cs ions was barely affected by the presence of HA and its gamma irradiation. The concentration ratio of metal complexed and non-complexed species in the solid and liquid phases was evaluated by sequential filtration and chemical equilibrium calculations. The ratios were low in both phases for Cs and supported the minimal contribution of HA to Cs sorption. However, the concentration ratio for Eu³⁺ in the liquid phase was high, indicating that the complexing ability of HA to Eu³⁺ was higher than that of HA to Cs⁺.

Ultrafiltration concentrated biogas slurry can reduce the organic pollution of groundwater in fertigation

Biogas slurry has the problems of having a low concentration, having a large production volume, and containing many small-molecule organic pollutants. During the fertigation process of biogas slurry, many small-molecule organic pollutants may pose potential pollution risks to groundwater. In this study, the ultrafiltration membrane technology was used to separate small-molecule organics in the biogas slurry to prepare ultrafiltration concentrated biogas slurry (UCBS). To research the impact of UCBS and raw biogas slurry (RBS) on the small-molecule organic pollution of groundwater, a laboratory soil column simulation leaching device was used to conduct leaching experiments with 4 types of UCBS and RBS in acric ferralsols and hydragric anthrosols for two quarters (8 fertilization periods). The results of the study show that both UCBS and RBS caused nitrate pollution to groundwater. UCBS has a lower risk of organic pollution to groundwater than RBS. Irrigating UCBS in hydragric anthrosols has a higher risk of organic pollution of groundwater than that in acric ferralsols. Analysis of the molecular weight distribution of dissolved organic matter (DOM) in the leaching solution showed that the organic pollutants were mainly small molecules <10 kDa. According to 3D excitation-emission matrix (3D-EEM) analysis, the main organic pollutants in the leaching solution were fulvic acid, microbial protein metabolites and humic acid organic compounds. The research results show that the pretreatment of biogas slurry by ultrafiltration can reduce the risk of small-molecule organic pollution of groundwater in land application, which can provide a new scientific basis to standardize biogas slurry land application technical guidelines and reduce groundwater pollution.
