Chitosan hydrogel synthesis to remove arsenic and fluoride ions from groundwater

Arsenic and fluoride in groundwater triggering a high risk: Probabilistic results using Monte Carlo simulation and species sensitivity distribution

The widespread presence of arsenic (As) and fluoride (F-) in groundwater poses substantial risks to human health on a global scale. These elements have been identified as the most prevalent geogenic contaminants in groundwater in northern Mexico. Consequently, this study aimed to evaluate the human health and ecological risks associated with the content of As and F- in the Meoqui-Delicias aquifer, which is in one of Mexico's most emblematic irrigation districts. Concentrations of As and F- were measured in 38 groundwater samples using ICP-MS and ion chromatography, respectively. Overall, these elements showed a similar trend across the aquifer, revealing a positive correlation between them and pH. The concentration of As and F- in the groundwater ranged from 5.3 μg/L to 303 μg/L and from 0.5 mg/L to 8.8 mg/L, respectively. Additionally, the levels of As and F- surpassed the established national standards for safe drinking water in 92% and 97% of samples, respectively. Given that groundwater is used for both agricultural purposes and human activities, this study also assessed the associated human health and ecological risks posed by these elements using Monte Carlo simulation and Species Sensitivity Distribution. The findings disclosed a significant noncarcinogenic health risk associated with exposure to As and F-, as well as an unacceptable carcinogenic health risk to As through water consumption for both adults and children. Furthermore, a high ecological risk to aquatic species was identified for F- and high to medium risks for As in the sampling sites. Therefore, the findings in this study provide valuable information for Mexican authorities and international organizations (e.g., WHO) about the adverse effects that any exposure without treatment to groundwater from this region represents for human health.

Adsorption of arsenic and fluoride: Modeling of single and competitive adsorption systems

The elevated co-occurrence of arsenic and fluoride in surface and groundwater poses risks to human health in many parts of the world. Using single and competitive batch equilibrium adsorption studies, this research focuses on As(V) and F adsorption by activated carbon and its modeling. BET, XRD, FESEM, EDS, and FTIR analysis were used to discern the structural characteristics of activated carbon. The influence of dosage, pH, and contact time were also investigated in single and simultaneous adsorption systems. The maximum adsorption capacity of activated carbon for arsenic and fluoride were found to be 3.58 mg/g and 2.32 mg/g, respectively. Kinetics studies indicated that pseudo-second-order kinetic model fit better than pseudo-first-order, Elovich, and intraparticle diffusion kinetic models. The non-linear regression analysis of Langmuir, Freundlich, Toth, Redlich Petersons, and Modified Langmuir Freundlich models was used to determine single-component asorption model parameters. Additionally, the simultaneous adsorption was rigorously modeled and compared using the Extended Langmuir (EL), Extended Langmuir Freundlich (ELF), Modified Competitive Langmuir (MCL), and Jeppu Amrutha Manipal Multicomponent (JAMM) isotherm models, and competitive mechanisms were interpreted for the simultaneous adsorption system. Further, the model performances were evaluated by statistical error analysis using the normalized average percentage error (NAPE), root mean square errors (RMSE), and the correlation coefficient (R2). According to the modeling results, single equilibrium data fitted better with the Modified Langmuir Freundlich isotherm model, with a higher R2 of 0.99 and lower NAPE values of 3.8 % and 1.28 % for As(V) and F, than other models. For the binary adsorption, the Extended Langmuir Freundlich isotherm model demonstrated excellent fit with lowest errors. All the competitive isotherm models fit the As(V) and F simultaneous sorption systems reasonably well. Furthermore, the research unveiled a nuanced hierarchy of isotherm fitting, with ELF > EL > MCL > JAMM in varying arsenic at a constant fluoride concentration, and ELF > JAMM > EL > MCL in varying fluoride at a constant arsenic concentrations. In addition, competitive studies divulged crucial insights into selective adsorption, as As(V) exhibits a pronounced adsorption selectivity over F on activated carbon. In essence, As(V) showed a more pronounced antagonistic behavior over F, whereas F exhibited a much lesser competitive behavior in the adsorption of arsenic.

Efficient groundwater defluorination over a wide concentration gradient through capacitive deionization with a three-layer structured membrane coating electrode

Fluoride (F-) pollution in groundwater is an important environmental issue and capacitive deionization (CDI) holds promise for defluorination at moderate concentrations (e.g., 200 -1000 mg L-1). However, existing electrodes suffer from the overlap of electrical-double-layer (EDL) and severe co-ion effects at low (e.g., <200 mg L-1) and high sodium fluoride (NaF) concentrations (e.g., >1000 mg L-1), respectively, exhibiting poor salt adsorption capacity (SAC). Hence, a three-layer structured electrode, "membrane/carbon nanotube (CNT)/activated carbon (AC)" (CNT-MCE), was prepared through electrospinning CNT onto AC, followed by a polymer membrane coating. Compared to AC and membrane coated electrode, CNT-MCE with mesopore-dominated structure prevented EDL overlap, achieving a higher SAC of 40.8 mg g-1 at 100 mg L-1 NaF. At 1500 mg L-1 NaF, the positively charged CNT-MCE exhibited an improved SAC of 58.8 mg g-1 by inhibiting co-ion effects. Meanwhile, CNT-MCE consistently demonstrated superb SACs at 200 - 800 mg L-1 NaF and maintained excellent stability over a wide concentration gradient by inhibiting severe oxidation. Notably, CNT-MCE successfully decreased the F- concentration in simulated groundwater from 3.4 to 1.1 mg L-1. Overall, our work provides an efficient strategy of electrode design to broaden the applicability of CDI for groundwater defluorination over a wide concentration gradient.

Cr(VI) and doxorubicin adsorptive capture by a novel bionanocomposite of Ti-MOF@TiO2 incorporated with watermelon biochar and chitosan hydrogel

Biodegradable polymers, biochars and metal organic frameworks (MOFs) have manifested as top prospects for elimination of harmful pollutants. In the current study, Ti-MOF was synthesized and decorated with TiO2 nanoparticles, then embedded into watermelon peel biochar and functionalized with chitosan hydrogel to produce Ti-MOF@TiO2@WMPB@CTH. Various instruments were employed to assure the effective production of the bionanocomposite. The HR-TEM and SEM studies referred to excellent surface porosity and homogeneity of Ti-MOF@TiO2@WMPB@CTH bionanocomposite, with 51.02-74.23 nm. Based on the BET analysis, the mesoporous structure has a significant surface area of 366.04 m2 g-1 and a considerable total pore volume of 11.38 × 10-2 cm3 g-1, with a mean pore size of 12.434 nm. Removal of doxorubicin (DOX) and hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) was examined under various experimentations. Pseudo-second order kinetic models in addition to Langmuir isotherm offered the best fitting. Thermodynamic experiments of the two contaminants demonstrated spontaneous and endothermic interactions. After five subsequent adsorption and desorption cycles, Ti-MOF@TiO2@WMPB@CTH bionanocomposite demonstrated an exceptional recyclability for the elimination of DOX and Cr(VI) ions, reaching 97.96 % and 95.28 %, respectively. Finally, the newly designed Ti-MOF@TiO2@WMPB@CTH bionanocomposite demonstrated a high removing efficiency of Cr(VI) ions and DOX from samples of real water.

Research progress on chitin/chitosan-based emulsion delivery systems and their application in lipid digestion regulation

Excessive lipid intake is linked to an elevated risk of health problems. However, reducing lipid contents may influence food structure and flavor. Some alternatives are needed to control the lipid absorption. Emulsions are common carriers for lipids, which can control the hydrolysis and absorption of lipids. Chitin (Ch) and chitosan (CS) are natural polysaccharides with good biodegradability, biocompatibility, and unique cationic properties. They have been reported to be able to delay lipolysis, which can be regarded as one of the most promising agents that regulates lipid digestion (LiD). The application of Ch/CS and their derivatives in emulsions are summarized in this review with a focus on their performances and mechanisms for LiD regulation, aiming to provide theoretical guidance for the development of novel Ch/CS emulsions, and the regulation of LiD. A reasonable design of emulsion interface can provide its resistance to the external environment and then control LiD. The properties of emulsion interface are the key factors affecting LiD. Therefore, systematic study on the relationship between Ch/CS-based emulsion structure and LiD can not only instruct the reasonable design of emulsion interface to accurately regulate LiD, but also provide scientific guidelines for applying Ch/CS in functional food, medicine and other fields.

Remediation of water tainted with noxious aspirin and fluoride ion using UiO-66-NH2 loaded peanut shell

One green adsorbent, UiO-66-NH2 modified peanut shell (c-PS-MOF), was prepared in a green synthetic route for improving the capture level of aspirin (ASP) and fluoride ion (F-). The adsorption properties of c-PS-MOF were evaluated by batch experiments and its physicochemical properties were explored by various characterization methods. The results showed that c-PS-MOF exhibited a wide range of pH applications (ASP: 2-10; F-: 3-12) and high salt resistance in the capturing processes of ASP and F-. The unit adsorption capacity of c-PS-MOF was as high as 84.7 mg·g-1 for ASP as pH = 3 and 11.2 mg·g-1 for F- under pH = 6 at 303 K from Langmuir model, respectively. When the solid-liquid ratio was 2 g·L-1, the content of ASP (C0 = 100 mg·L-1) and F- (C0 = 20 mg·L-1) in solution can be reduced to 0.48 mg·L-1 and 1.05 mg·L-1 separately. The recycling of c-PS-MOF can be realized with 5 mmol·L-1 NaOH as eluent. Analysis of simulated water samples showed that c-PS-MOF could be used to remove ASP and F- from actual water. The c-PS-MOF is promising to bind ASP and F- from rivers, lakes, etc.

Fabrication of phosphoric-crosslinked chitosan@g-C3N4 gel beads for uranium(VI) separation from aqueous solution

In this work, a novel g-C₃N₄ filled, phosphoric-crosslinked chitosan gel bead (P-CS@CN) was successfully prepared to adsorb U(VI) from water. The separation performance of chitosan was improved by introducing more functional groups. At pH 5 and 298 K, the adsorption efficiency and adsorption capacity could reach 98.0 % and 416.7 mg g^-1, respectively. After adsorption, the morphological structure of P-CS@CN did not change and adsorption efficiency remained above 90 % after 5 cycles. P-CS@CN exhibited an excellent applicability in water environment based on dynamic adsorption experiments. Thermodynamic analyses demonstrated the value of ΔG, manifesting the spontaneity of U(VI) adsorption process on P-CS@CN. The positive values of ΔH and ΔS showed that the U(VI) removal behavior of P-CS@CN was an endothermic reaction, indicating that the increase of temperature was great benefit to the removal. The adsorption mechanism of P-CS@CN gel bead could be summarized as the complexation reaction with the surface functional groups. This study not only developed an efficient adsorbent for the treatment of radioactive pollutants, but also provided a simple and feasible strategy for the modification of chitosan-based adsorption materials.

Assembling a supramolecular 3D network with tuneable mechanical properties using adamantylated cross-linking agents and β-cyclodextrin-modified hyaluronan

Hydrogels based on the supramolecular host-guest concept can be prepared if at least one constituent is a polymer chain modified with supramolecular host or guest (or both) units. Low-molecular-weight multitopic counterparts can also be used, however, guest molecules in the role of cross-linking agents are seldom reported, although such an approach offers wide-ranging possibilities for tuning the system properties via easily achievable structural modifications. In this paper, a series of adamantane-based star-like guest molecules was used for cross-linking of two types of β-cyclodextrin-modified hyaluronan (CD-HA). The prepared 3D supramolecular networks were characterised using nuclear magnetic resonance, titration calorimetry and rheological measurements to confirm the formation of the host-guest complexes between adamantane moieties and β-cyclodextrin units, including their typical properties such as self-healing and dynamic nature. The results indicate that the nature of the cross-linker (amides versus esters) has a greater impact on mechanical properties than the length of the guest's arms. In addition, the results show that the length of the HA polymer chain is more important than the degree of modification with supramolecular units. In conclusion, it was proven that the modular concept employing low-molecular-weight cross-linking guests is valuable for the formulation of supramolecular networks, including hydrogels.

Hierarchical Self-Assembled Polyimide Microspheres Functionalized with Amidoxime Groups for Uranium-Containing Wastewater Remediation

Through molecule self-assembly and subsequent surface functionalization, novel uranium adsorbent AO-OB hierarchical self-assembled polyimide microspheres (AO-OBHSPIMs) were obtained by introducing the amidoxime groups into hierarchical self-assembled polyimide microspheres for the efficient and selective recovery of uranium from wastewater. The results of Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and nitrogen adsorption-desorption isotherm showed that AO-OBHSPIMs were a semicrystalline polymer material with self-supporting hierarchical structure and low pore volume, and they were equipped with abundant amidoxime groups. Given the recognized selectivity of amidoxime groups and their hierarchical structure, AO-OBHSPIMs exhibited excellent selectivity to uranyl ions. Moreover, AO-OBHSPIMs exhibited good stability and recyclability and remarkable removal percentage within low-concentration solution (99.4%) and simulated uranium-containing wastewater (97.3%). AO-OBHSPIMs could be applied to fixed-bed column adsorption due to their large particle size and self-supporting hierarchical structure that can facilitate water flow. The in-depth discussion of the adsorption mechanism showed that the adsorption mainly depended on the combined action of electrostatic interactions and complexation, and the adsorption process was a spontaneous endothermic monolayer adsorption. In summary, AO-OBHSPIMs exhibited good application prospects in uranium-containing wastewater remediation.

Efficient and selective capture of uranium by polyethyleneimine-modified chitosan composite microspheres from radioactive nuclear waste

Uranium extraction from radioactive nuclear waste is vital for sustainable energy supply and ecological security. Herein, a polyethyleneimine-chitosan composite microspheres n-PEI/ECH-CTS (n = 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, 0.4, 0.5) were synthetized for efficient and selective uranium adsorption. The prepared chitosan microspheres with uniform size, uniform dispersion and good mechanical strength combine cost-effectiveness and environmental benefits. The 0.4-PEI/ECH-CTS exhibits the highest adsorption capacity of 380.65 mg g^-1 within only 4 h due to high nitrogen content of 6.57 mol kg^-1. The DFT calculations confirms that the optimal coordination mode of UO₂²⁺ and 0.4-PEI/ECH-CTS is one UO₂²⁺ chelated with two -NH₂ from two adsorption units, respectively. Adsorption efficiency of U(VI) from simulated nuclear wastewater achieves to 100%, and the K_d value is up to 1.1 × 10⁴ mL g^-1, which is 1.7 × 10⁴-6.1 × 10⁴ times that of coexisting ions. The C_U(VI) reduces in simulated wastewater from 10.98 mg L^-1 to 1 μg L^-1, which is well below the US Environmental Protection Agency uranium limits for drinking water (30 μg L^-1). Besides, 0.4-PEI/ECH-CTS still maintains above 95% adsorption efficiency after seven cycles. In short, the 0.4-PEI/ECH-CTS microspheres integrate high performance, practicality and cost-effectiveness, which has great advantages in practical industrial applications.

In-house fabrication of macro-porous biopolymeric hydrogel and its deployment for adsorptive remediation of lead and cadmium from water matrices

A novel adsorbent was prepared by blending chitosan (CS) and acrylic acid (AA) while using formaldehyde as a cross linker in the form of hydrogel beads. The adsorption properties of these hydrogel beads for the removal of toxic metal ions (Pb²⁺ and Cd²⁺) from aqueous solutions were evaluated. The hydrogel beads have a 3D macro-porous structure whose -NH₂ groups were considered to be the dominant binding specie for Cd and Pb ions. The equilibrium adsorption capacity (q_e) of beads was significantly affected by the mass ratio of sorbent and sorbate. The percentage removal of Cd and Pb ions was observed to be enhanced with the increase in sorbate concentration. The hydrogel beads maintained good adsorption properties at adsorption-desorption equilibrium. The Langmuir and Freundlich models were used to elaborate the isotherms as well as isotherm constants. Adsorption isothermal data is well explained by the Freundlich model. The data of experimental kinetics is interrelated with the second-order kinetic model, which showed that the chemical sorption phenomenon is the rate limiting step. The results of intraparticle diffusion model described the adsorption process occurred on a porous substance that proved chitosan/Formaldehyde beads to be the favorable adsorbent.

As and [Formula: see text] cooccurrence in drinking water: critical review of the international scenario, physicochemical behavior, removal technologies, health effects, and future trends

Drinking water contaminated with As and [Formula: see text] is increasingly prevalent worldwide. Their coexistence can have negative effects due to antagonistic or synergistic mechanisms, ranging from cosmetic problems, such as skin lesions and teeth staining, to more severe abnormalities, such as cancer and neurotoxicity. Available technologies for concurrent removal include electrocoagulation ~ adsorption > membranes > chemical coagulation > , and among others, all of which have limitations despite their advantages. Nevertheless, the existence of competing ions such as silicon > phosphate > calcium ~ magnesium > sulfate > and nitrate affects the elimination efficiency. Mexico is one of the countries that is affected by As and [Formula: see text] contamination. Because only 10 of the 32 states have adequate removal technologies, more than 65% of the country is impacted by co-presence problems. Numerous reviews have been published concerning the elimination of As or [Formula: see text]. However, only a few studies have focused on the simultaneous removal. This critical review analyzes the new sources of contamination, simultaneous physicochemical behaviors, available technologies for the elimination of both species, and future trends. This highlights the need to implement technologies that work with actual contaminated water instead of aqueous solutions (55% of the works reviewed correspond to aqueous solutions). Similarly, it is necessary to migrate to the creation of pilot, pre-pilot, or prototype scale projects, because 77% of the existing studies correspond to lab-scale research.
