AuNPs/NiFe-LDHs-assisted laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry for efficient analysis of metronidazole and its metabolites in water samples

Pt/NiFe-LDH hybrids for quantification and qualification of polyphenols

Polyphenols with antioxidant properties are of significant interest in medical and pharmaceutical applications. Given the diverse range of activities of polyphenols in vivo, accurate detection of these compounds plays a crucial role in nutritional surveillance and pharmaceutical development. Yet, the efficient quantitation of polyphenol contents and qualification of monomer compositions present a notable challenge when studying polyphenol bioavailability. In this study, platinum-modified nickel-iron layered double hydroxide (Pt/NiFe-LDH hybrids) were designed to mimic peroxidases for colorimetric analysis and act as enhanced matrices for laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry (LDI MS) to quantify and qualify polyphenols. The hybrids exhibited an enzymatic activity of 33.472 U/mg for colorimetric assays, facilitating the rapid and direct quantitation of total tea polyphenols within approximately 1 min. Additionally, the heterogeneous structure and exposed hydroxyl groups on the hybrid surface contributed to photoelectric enhancement and in-situ enrichment of polyphenols in LDI MS. This study introduces an innovative approach to detect polyphenols using advanced materials, potentially inspiring the future development and applications of other photoactive nanomaterials.

Heterostructured grafting of NiFe-layered double hydroxide@TiO2 for boosting photoelectrochemical cathodic protection

Accelerating the oxidation process at photoanode-electrolyte interfaces can prolong the lifetime of photoexcited electrons and improve the efficiency of photoelectrochemical cathodic protection (PECCP) systems without relying on hole scavengers. However, the systematic design of precisely structured heterostructures for efficient photoanodes remains challenging. Here we meticulously engineered a type-II heterostructure featuring precise spatial organization, wherein NiFe-layered double hydroxide nanosheets (NiFe-LDH NSs) were assembled onto annealed TiO2 nanorod arrays (ATNAs), demonstrating their effectiveness in achieving efficient PECCP. The interfacial electronic coupling and appropriate energy alignment between the NiFe-LDH NSs and ATNAs allowed rapid hole extraction from the ATNAs to the NiFe-LDH NSs. Furthermore, the uniform distribution of the NiFe-LDH NSs on top of ATNAs drastically reduced the overpotential of oxygen evolution reactions (OER) from 370 to 200 mV and Tafel slope from 162 to 56 mV dec-1, leading to significantly improved cathodic protection of 304 stainless steel (SS) under extended illumination and interesting post-illumination protection. In addition, with the increase of testing cycles, the as-prepared NiFe-LDH NSs@ATNAs demonstrated a progressively enhanced cathodic protection potential from 0.15 to 0.13 V vs. RHE over 50 cycles. These findings provide important guidelines for the design of future high-efficiency green metal protection through rational photoanode design.

Functional Melanin Nanoparticles-Assisted Laser Desorption Ionization Mass Spectrometry for High-Sensitivity Detection of TBBPA and TBBPS Contaminations in Animal-Derived Foodstuffs

Tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA) and tetrabromobisphenol S (TBBPS) have been widely used as additives in various products; however, their residues damage human health mainly via dietary ingestion. The current detection techniques remain challenging in directly and sensitively identifying TBBPA and TBBPS from food samples. Matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF-MS) has great potential as an alternative tool for the analysis of low-mass environmental pollution. Herein, we successfully screened and optimized COOH-MNP-COOH as a novel MALDI matrix to enhance deprotonation for the analysis of TBBPA and TBBPS from animal-derived food samples in negative-ion mode. Notably, COOH-MNP-COOH was synthesized by a facile self-assembly strategy and characterized by TEM, FT-IR, UV-vis, and zeta potential analysis. Compared with conventional and control matrices, the COOH-MNP-COOH matrix exhibited excellent performance of TBBPA and TBBPS with high chemical stability, favorable reproducibility, remarkable salt and protein tolerance, and high sensitivity owing to abundant active groups, stronger UV-vis absorption at 355 nm, and better hydrophilicity and biocompatibility. TBBPA and TBBPS were detected with the assistance of an internal standard with limits of detection (LODs) of 300 and 200 pg/mL, respectively. Moreover, this method was applied to directly identify the residues of TBBPA and TBBPS in milk products, followed by basa catfish and meat. This research may provide a promising approach for the analysis of environmental pollutants in foodstuffs.

AuNPs/CNC Nanocomposite with A "Dual Dispersion" Effect for LDI-TOF MS Analysis of Intact Proteins in NSCLC Serum Exosomes

Detecting exosomal markers using laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (LDI-TOF MS) is a novel approach for examining liquid biopsies of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) samples. However, LDI-TOF MS is limited by low sensitivity and poor reproducibility when analyzing intact proteins directly. In this report, gold nanoparticles/cellulose nanocrystals (AuNPs/CNC) is introduced as the matrix for direct analysis of intact proteins in NSCLC serum exosomes. AuNPs/CNC with "dual dispersion" effects dispersed and stabilized AuNPs and improved ion inhibition effects caused by protein aggregation. These features increased the signal-to-noise ratio of [M+H]+ peaks by two orders of magnitude and lowered the detection limit of intact proteins to 0.01 mg mL-1. The coefficient of variation with or without AuNPs/CNC is measured as 10.2% and 32.5%, respectively. The excellent reproducibility yielded a linear relationship (y = 15.41x - 7.983, R2 = 0.989) over the protein concentration range of 0.01 to 20 mg mL-1. Finally, AuNPs/CNC-assisted LDI-TOF MS provides clinically relevant fingerprint information of exosomal proteins in NSCLC serum, and characteristic proteins S100 calcium-binding protein A10, Urokinase plasminogen activator surface receptor, Plasma protease C1 inhibitor, Tyrosine-protein kinase Fgr and Mannose-binding lectin associated serine protease 2 represented excellent predictive biomarkers of NSCLC risk.

Continuous synthesis of BaFe2O4 and BaFe12O19 nanoparticles in a droplet microreactor for efficient detection of antihistamine drugs in oral fluid using surface-assisted laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry

Surface-assisted laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry (SALDI-MS) has received considerable attention as a complementary approach to matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry (MALDI-MS), offering substantial potential for analyzing molecules in the low-mass region. Herein, we propose a facile method, a microreactor for the synthesis of two types of barium ferrite (BaFe2O4 and BaFe12O19) nanoparticles (NPs) within moving droplets for detecting antihistamine (AH) drugs in oral fluid (OF). The synthesized BaFe2O4 and BaFe12O19 NPs exhibited small particle size, good ultraviolet absorption, and excellent performance in SALDI-MS, as determined by survival yield measurements. The limits-of-detection for AH drugs were in the range of 1 pg mL-1 to 100 ng mL-1, and spot-spot reproducibility of the SALDI substrates was satisfactory. Moreover, when analyzing cetirizine in OF, the obtained recoveries of cetirizine were 101% and 99% using BaFe2O4 and BaFe12O19 NP, respectively. Furthermore, the proposed method was validated by analyzing OF samples from a healthy volunteer who consumed a 5 mg levocetirizine tablet for seven days. SALDI-MS analysis confirmed the successful detection of endogenous components, the parent ion of cetirizine, and other exogenous substances. This study reports an advanced application of droplet microreactor technology for designing and synthesizing a wide range of novel and efficient SALDI-MS substrates for various applications.

A novel electrochemical aptasensor based on polyaniline and gold nanoparticles for ultrasensitive and selective detection of ascorbic acid

Ascorbic acid (AA) is involved in many physiological activities of the body and plays an important role in maintaining and promoting human health. It is also present in many natural and artificial foods. Therefore, the development of highly sensitive and accurate AA sensors is highly desirable for human health monitoring, as well as other commercial application fields. Herein, an ultrasensitive and selective electrochemical sensor based on an aptamer was developed for the determination of AA for the first time. The aptasensor was fabricated by modifying a composite made of polyaniline (PANI) and gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) on a glassy carbon electrode. The morphologies and electrochemical properties of the resulting electrodes were characterized by various analytical methods. The results indicated relatively good electrical conduction properties of PANI for accelerated electron transfer. The modification with AuNPs provided signal amplification, suitable for applications as novel platforms for the sensitive sensing of AA. Under optimized conditions, the proposed aptasensor displayed a wide linear response toward the detection of AA from 1.0 to 1.0 × 105 ng L-1 coupled with a low detection limit of 0.10 ng L-1. The sensor also exhibited excellent selectivity and high stability, with at least 2000-fold higher sensitivity than similar previously reported methods. Importantly, the aptasensor exhibited promising properties for the determination of AA in real fruits, vegetables, and infant milk powder, thereby showing potential for food analysis.

Efficient detection of metronidazole by a glassy carbon electrode modified with a composite of a cyclotriveratrylene-based metal-organic framework and multi-walled carbon nanotubes

Constructing a sensitive and efficient sensor for determination of metronidazole (MNZ) is crucial in food field. Herein, a new cyclotriveratrylene-based metal-organic framework (MOF), namely, [Cd₆L₂(cyclen)₂(H₂O)₂] (1), was constructed by self-assembly of functionalized 5,6,12,13,19,20-hexacarboxy-propoxy-cyclotriveratrylene (H₆L), 1,4,7,10-tetraazacyclododecane (cyclen) and Cd(II) cation under solvothermal condition. In 1, adjacent Cd(II) cations are linked by L^6- to produce a 2D polymeric structure with carboxylate and phenolic oxygen atoms. To enhance conductivity of 1, it was combined with conducting carbon materials, including mesoporous carbon (MC), reduced graphene oxide (RGO) and multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT), respectively, producing a series of composite materials. Remarkably, electrochemical tests showed that 1@MWCNT(1:1) featured a much better electrochemical detection performance for metronidazole (MNZ) than 1@MC and 1@RGO. The linear range for the detection of MNZ is up to 0.4-500 μM and the limit of detection (LOD) for MNZ reached 0.25 μM. Importantly, the fabricated sensor 1@MWCNT(1:1) was employed for the detection of MNZ in honey and egg with satisfactory result. High-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) validated the high accuracy of the electrochemical method for the determination of honey and egg.

An efficient Pt@MXene platform for the analysis of small-molecule natural products

Small-molecule (m/z<500) natural products have rich biological activity and significant application value thus need to be effectively detected. Surface-assisted laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry (SALDI MS) has become a powerful detection tool for small-molecule analysis. However, more efficient substrates need to be developed to improve the efficiency of SALDI MS. Thus, platinum nanoparticle-decorated Ti₃C₂ MXene (Pt@MXene) was synthesized in this study as an ideal substrate for SALDI MS in positive ion mode and exhibited excellent performance for the high-throughput detection of small molecules. Compared with using MXene, GO, and CHCA matrix, a stronger signal peak intensity and wider molecular coverage was obtained using Pt@MXene in the detection of small-molecule natural products, with a lower background, excellent salt and protein tolerance, good repeatability, and high detection sensitivity. The Pt@MXene substrate was also successfully used to quantify target molecules in medicinal plants. The proposed method has potentially wide application.

Inner filter effect-based near-infrared fluorescent probe for detection of metronidazole on a smartphone-integrated analytical platform

Antibiotic residues pose a serious threat to ecosystems and food safety. Developing convenient, visual, and on-site detection methods is therefore in high demand and has a practical purpose. In this work, a near-infrared (NIR) fluorescent probe with an analysis platform based on a smartphone has been constructed for quantitative and on-site detection of metronidazole (MNZ). CdTe quantum dots with NIR emission at 710 nm (QD710) were prepared by using a simple hydrothermal method and showed good properties. A spectral overlap between absorption of MNZ and excitation of QD710 resulted in an effective inner filter effect (IFE) between QD710 and MNZ. Because of the IFE, the fluorescence of QD710 decreased gradually with increasing concentrations of MNZ. Based on the fluorescence response, quantitative detection and visualization of MNZ was achieved. NIR fluorescence analysis and the special IFE between probe and target can improve sensitivity and selectivity for MNZ. Additionally, these were also utilized for quantitative detection of MNZ in real food samples and the results were reliable and satisfactory. Meanwhile, a portable visual analysis platform in a smartphone was constructed for on-site analysis of MNZ, which can be used as an alternative method for detection of MNZ residues in situations with limited instrumental conditions. Therefore, this work provides a convenient, visual, and real-time analysis method for detection of MNZ and the analysis platform shows great potential for commercialization.

Visualizing the Spatial Distribution of Arctium lappa L. Root Components by MALDI-TOF Mass Spectrometry Imaging

This study is aimed at developing novel analytical methods to accurately visualize the spatial distribution of various endogenous components in Arctium lappa L. (A. lappa) roots, and to precisely guide the setting of pre-treatment operations during processing technologies and understand plant metabolism process. The matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) imaging technology was used for visual demonstration of the in situ spatial distribution in A. lappa roots. This work consisted of four steps: matrix selection, section preparation, matrix coating, and MALDI-TOF MS imaging analysis. Consequently, eight saccharides, four caffeoylquinic acids, four flavonoids, six amino acids, one choline, and one phospholipid were imaged and four unidentified components were found. Saccharides were distributed in the center, whereas caffeoylquinic acids and flavonoids were mainly present in the epidermis and cortex. Furthermore, amino acids were mainly detected in the phloem, and choline in the cambium, while phosphatidylserine was found in the secondary phloem and cambium. This study demonstrated that MALDI-TOF MS imaging technology could provide a technical support to understand the spatial distribution of components in A. lappa roots, which would promote the processing technologies for A. lappa roots and help us to understand the plant metabolism process.

Rational Design and Preparation of Pt-LDH/CeO2 Catalyst for High-Efficiency Photothermal Catalytic Oxidation of Toluene

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are attracting much more attention due to their contributions to air pollution and human health problems. Photothermal catalytic oxidation is considered as an energy-saving method for the removal of VOCs. However, the efficiency of the photothermal catalytic system is still suffering from the low activity of the catalyst due to its poor response to visible light and low efficiency of charge separation. Here, few-layer CoAl-LDH (layered double hydroxide) was prepared as an advantageous support for loading Pt nanoparticles to obtain Pt-LDH, which were coated on CeO₂ nanoparticles. Type II heterojunctions were formed on the interface of LDH and CeO₂. In photocatalysis, the hot electrons will move to CeO₂, which is better at the activation of O₂ molecules, and holes will concentrate on the LDHs, which have plenty of hydroxyls to generate •OH radicals. Furthermore, the Schottky heterojunctions between LDH and Pt nanoparticles benefit the improvement of light absorption by the localized surface plasmon resonance of Pt nanoparticles. As a consequence, a high removal rate of toluene (75.7%) at a weight-hourly space velocity of 23340 mL/(g·h) under visible light irradiation (160 mW/cm², λ > 400 nm) at room temperature was achieved over the Pt-LDH/CeO₂ catalyst. The catalyst design provides a useful method to prepare high-efficiency photothermal catalysts.

Au3+ -Functionalized UiO-67 Metal-Organic Framework Nanoparticles: O2•- and •OH Generating Nanozymes and Their Antibacterial Functions

The synthesis and characterization of Au³⁺ -modified UiO-67 metal-organic framework nanoparticles, Au³⁺ -NMOFs, are described. The Au³⁺ -NMOFs reveal dual oxidase-like and peroxidase-like activities and act as an active catalyst for the catalyzed generation of O₂^•- under aerobic conditions or •OH in the presence of H₂ O₂ . The two reactive oxygen species (ROS) agents O₂^•- and •OH are cooperatively formed by Au³⁺ -NMOFs under aerobic conditions, and in the presence of H₂ O_2. The Au³⁺ -NMOFs are applied as an effective catalyst for the generation ROS agents for antibacterial and wound healing applications. Effective antibacterial cell death and inhibition of cell proliferation of Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) and Escherichia coli (E. coli) bacterial colonies are demonstrated in the presence of the Au³⁺ -NMOFs. In addition, in vivo experiments demonstrate effective wound healing of mice wounds infected by S. aureus, treated by the Au³⁺ -NMOFs.
