A novel chitosan-urea encapsulated material for persulfate slow-release to degrade organic pollutants

Development of persulfate-based advanced oxidation processes to remove synthetic azo dyes from aqueous matrices

Azo dyes are largely used in many industries and discharged in large volumes of their effluents into the aquatic environment giving rise to non-esthetic pollution and health-risk problems. Due to the high stability of azo dyes in ambient conditions, they cannot be abated in conventional wastewater treatment plants. Over the last fifteen years, the decontamination of dyeing effluents by persulfate (PS)-based advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) has received a great attention. In these methods, PS is activated to be decomposed into sulfate radical anion (SO4•-), which is further partially hydrolyzed to hydroxyl radical (•OH). Superoxide ion (O2•-) and singlet oxygen (1O2) can also be produced as oxidants. This review summarizes the results reported for the discoloration and mineralization of synthetic and real waters contaminated with azo dyes covering up to November 2023. PS activation with iron, non-iron transition metals, and carbonaceous materials catalysts, heat, UVC light, photocatalysis, photodegradation with iron, electrochemical and related processes, microwaves, ozonation, ultrasounds, and other processes is detailed and analyzed. The principles and characteristics of each method are explained with special attention to the operating variables, the different oxidizing species generated yielding radical and non-radical mechanisms, the addition of inorganic anions and natural organic matter, the aqueous matrix, and the by-products identified. Finally, the overall loss of toxicity or partial detoxification of treated azo dye solutions during the PS-based AOPs is discussed.

Comparative study of reactive oxygen species and tetracycline degradation pathways in catalytic peroxodisulfate activation by asymmetric mesoporous TiO2 and the corresponding controlled-release materials

The removal of trace amounts of antibiotics from water environments while simultaneously avoiding potential environmental hazards during the treatment is still a challenge. In this work, green, harmless, and novel asymmetric mesoporous TiO2 (A-mTiO2) was combined with peroxodisulfate (PDS) as active components in a controlled-release material (CRM) system for the degradation of tetracycline (TC) in the dark. The formation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and the degradation pathways of TC during catalytic PDS activation by A-mTiO2 powder catalysts and the CRMs were thoroughly studied. Due to its asymmetric mesoporous structure, there were abundant Ti3+/Ti4+ couples and oxygen vacancies in A-mTiO2, resulting in excellent activity in the activation of PDS for TC degradation, with a mineralization rate of 78.6%. In CRMs, ROS could first form during PDS activation by A-mTiO2 and subsequently dissolve from the CRMs to degrade TC in groundwater. Due to the excellent performance and good stability of A-mTiO2, the resulting constructed CRMs could effectively degrade TC in simulated groundwater over a long period (more than 20 days). From electron paramagnetic resonance analysis and TC degradation experiments, it was interesting to find that the ROS formed during PDS activation by A-mTiO2 powder catalysts and CRMs were different, but the degradation pathways for TC were indeed similar in the two systems. In PDS activation by A-mTiO2, besides the free hydroxyl radical (·OH), singlet oxygen (1O2) worked as a major ROS participating in TC degradation. For CRMs, the immobilization of A-mTiO2 inside CRMs made it difficult to capture superoxide radicals (·O2-), and continuously generate 1O2. In addition, the formation of sulfate radicals (·SO4-), and ·OH during the release process of CRMs was consistent with PDS activation by the A-mTiO2 powder catalyst. The eco-friendly CRMs had a promising potential for practical application in the remediation of organic pollutants from groundwater.

Targeted Delivery of Arctigenin Using Sialic Acid Conjugate-Modified Liposomes for the Treatment of Breast Cancer

Arctigenin (ATG) is a broad-spectrum antitumor drug with an excellent inhibitory effect on malignant tumors such as breast cancer, glioblastoma, liver cancer, and colon cancer. However, the clinical application of ATG is limited by its poor water solubility and quick hydrolysis in the liver, intestine, and plasma, which might hinder its application. Sialic acid (SA) recognizes selectin receptors overexpressed on the surface of tumor-associated macrophages. In this study, SA was conjugated with octadecylamine (ODA) to prepare SA-ODA, which was employed to prepare SA functionalized nanoliposomes (SA-Lip) to achieve breast cancer targeting. The formulations were finely optimized using the Box-Behnken design to achieve higher ATG loading. The size, ζ potential, entrapment efficiency, drug loading, and release behavior of ATG@SA-Lip were fully investigated in comparison with conventional ATG@Lip. The ATG@SA-Lip displayed more potent cytotoxicity and higher cellular internalization compared to ATG@Sol and ATG@Lip in both MCF7 and 4T1 cells. Notably, ATG@SA-Lip showed the lowest impact on the immune system. Our study demonstrates that SA-Lip has strong potential as a delivery system for the targeted delivery of ATG.

Controlled release of herbicides through glyphosate intercalated layered double hydroxides and enhancement of anti-scouring ability via poly-l-aspartic acid and chitosan modification

Nanocarrier preparations could effectively improve the utilization rate of pesticides, and reduce pesticide loss. In this study, glyphosate (GLY)-loaded MgAl layered double hydroxide (GLY@LDH) was synthesized via an in-situ method. Subsequently, GLY@LDH composite samples were prepared using a layer-by-layer self-assembly approach and modified with poly-L-aspartic acid (PASP) and chitosan (CS). XRD, FT-IR, SEM, and Zeta potential characterization confirmed that GLY was successfully loaded in the interlayer of LDHs and PASP/CS were successfully encapsulated on the surface of the composite sample. The release effect in different ionic solutions and soils was studied and analyzed. The release behavior conforms to the Ritger-Peppas kinetic model, and the release mechanism was ion exchange, which was further explored by means of XRD, SEM, and molecular simulation. The results of the anti-scouring experiment and contact angle measurement indicated that the layered self-assembly material enhanced the washing resistance of the material. The practical application effect of the sample was verified through a pot experiment. This study provides new insights into the simple preparation of pesticide-controlled release formulations that reduce leaching losses.

Dynamic Release Characteristics and Kinetics of a Persulfate Sustained-Release Material

Sustained-release materials are increasingly being used in the delivery of oxidants for in situ chemical oxidation (ISCO) for groundwater remediation. Successful implementation of sustained-release materials depends on a clear understanding of the mechanism and kinetics of sustained release. In this research, a columnar sustained-release material (PS@PW) was prepared with paraffin wax and sodium persulfate (PS), and column experiments were performed to investigate the impacts of the PS@PW diameter and PS/PW mass ratio on PS release. The results demonstrated that a reduction in diameter led to an increase in both the rate and proportion of PS release, as well as a diminished lifespan of release. The release process followed the second-order kinetics, and the release rate constant was positively correlated with the PS@PW diameter. A matrix boundary diffusion model was utilized to determine the PS@PW diffusion coefficient of the PS release process, and the release lifespan of a material with a length of 500 mm and a diameter of 80 mm was predicted to be more than 280 days. In general, this research provided a better understanding of the release characteristics and kinetics of persulfate from a sustained-release system and could lead to the development of columnar PS@PW as a practical oxidant for in situ chemical oxidation of contaminated aquifers.

Novel Double Cross-Linked Acrylic Acid/Bagasse Cellulose Porous Hydrogel for Controlled Release of Citral and Bacteriostatic Effects

In this study, double cross-linked acrylic acid/bagasse cellulose (AA/BC) porous hydrogels were first prepared using cold plasma (CP) technology instead of chemical initiators. The structure and properties of porous hydrogels, as well as the controlled release and bacteriostatic application as functional carriers, were investigated. Results showed that a novel double cross-linked hydrogel had been successfully synthesized by utilizing ^•OH and H⁺ produced during plasma discharge. The acrylic acid (AA) monomers were successfully grafted onto the main chains of bagasse cellulose (BC), forming a porous three-dimensional network structure. The AA/BC porous hydrogels showed excellent swelling levels and intelligent responses. The release of citral in hydrogel inclusion compounds embedded with citral was controlled by adjusting the pH, and the slow release period was about 2 days. The inclusion compounds presented strong bacteriostatic effects against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus, extending the shelf life of fruits for about 4 days. Therefore, it can be concluded that CP technology is considered to be an efficient and environmental-friendly initiation technology for preparing hydrogels. The potential application of hydrogel inclusion compounds in the food field is expanded.

Markedly boosted peroxymonosulfate- and periodate-based Fenton-like activities of iron clusters on sulfur/nitrogen codoped carbon: Key roles of a sulfur dopant and compared activation mechanisms

Highly dispersed iron nanoclusters on carbon (FeNC@C) hold great promise for wastewater purification in Fenton-like reactions. The microenvironment engineering of central Fe atom is promising to boost the activation capacity of FeNC@C, which is however remains a challenge. This study developed a self-sacrificed templating strategy to S, N-codoped carbon supported Fe nanoclusters (FeNC@SNC) activator and find the key role of sulfur heteroatoms in regulating the electron structure of Fe sites and final activation property. Investigations revealed that the FeNC@SNC composite exhibited unusual bifunctional activity in both peroxymonosulfate (PMS)- and periodate (PI)-based Fenton-like reactions. We also offered insights into the differences between the degradation of organics by the FeNC@SNC/PMS and FeNC@SNC/PI systems. Specifically, under identical conditions, the FeNC@SNC/PMS system delivered a higher oxidation capability and stronger resistance to nontarget matrix constituents, but showed more severe Fe leaching than the FeNC@SNC/PI system. Furthermore, while mediated electron-transfer process was identified as the major route for pollutant decomposition in both systems, the high-valent Fe-oxo species [Fe (IV)] was the auxiliary reactive species found only in the FeNC@SNC/PMS system. Based on these findings, our results provide profound insights into the design of active and durable Fe-based activators toward highly efficient Fenton-like reactions.

Chelating Agents in Assisting Phytoremediation of Uranium-Contaminated Soils: A Review

Massive stockpiles of uranium (U) mine tailings have resulted in soil contamination with U. Plants for soil remediation have low extraction efficiency of U. Chelating agents can mobilize U in soils and, hence, enhance phytoextraction of U from the soil. However, the rapid mobilization rate of soil U by chelating agents in a short period than plant uptake rate could increase the risk of groundwater contamination with soluble U leaching down the soil profile. This review summarizes recent progresses in synthesis and application of chelating agents for assisting phytoremediation of U-contaminated soils. In detail, the interactions between chelating agents and U ions are initially elucidated. Subsequently, the mechanisms of phytoextraction and effectiveness of different chelating agents for phytoremediation of U-contaminated soils are given. Moreover, the potential risks associated with chelating agents are discussed. Finally, the synthesis and application of slow-release chelating agents for slowing down metal mobilization in soils are presented. The application of slow-release chelating agents for enhancing phytoextraction of soil U is still scarce. Hence, we propose the preparation of slow-release biodegradable chelating agents, which can control the release speed of chelating agent into the soil in order to match the mobilization rate of soil U with plant uptake rate, while diminishing the risk of residual chelating agent leaching to groundwater.

Natural Polymers and Their Nanocomposites Used for Environmental Applications

The aim of this review is to bring together the main natural polymer applications for environmental remediation, as a class of nexus materials with advanced properties that offer the opportunity of integration in single or simultaneous decontamination processes. By identifying the main natural polymers derived from agro-industrial sources or monomers converted by biotechnology into sustainable polymers, the paper offers the main performances identified in the literature for: (i) the treatment of water contaminated with heavy metals and emerging pollutants such as dyes and organics, (ii) the decontamination and remediation of soils, and (iii) the reduction in the number of suspended solids of a particulate matter (PM) type in the atmosphere. Because nanotechnology offers new horizons in materials science, nanocomposite tunable polymers are also studied and presented as promising materials in the context of developing sustainable and integrated products in society to ensure quality of life. As a class of future smart materials, the natural polymers and their nanocomposites are obtained from renewable resources, which are inexpensive materials with high surface area, porosity, and high adsorption properties due to their various functional groups. The information gathered in this review paper is based on the publications in the field from the last two decades. The future perspectives of these fascinating materials should take into account the scale-up, the toxicity of nanoparticles, and the competition with food production, as well as the environmental regulations.
